They did a great job. The work included selection and planting of shrubs, ground cover, and flowering plants. They also designed and installed a great looking stone walk-way. Their work has made a great difference in the appearance of the front yard of my home. Mark Simpson was particularly helpful and professional.
Description of Work: I needed design and landscaping of my front yard.
The East Coast Landscape crew was very professional and courteous and completed this large project in impressive time. Mark was very responsive to questions throughout the design and installation and in the time since. We’ve had the patio over a year and it still looks great. Rain drainage is working just fine and Mark replaced the few plants that did not survive the first winter. We are extremely pleased with the work performed by East Coast Landscape Design and are pleased to give them our highest recommendation.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscape Design installed a spacious 1600 sq ft patio with retaining walls, built-in gas grill, steps to the pool, and a pathway to the side of the house, together with landscaping of perennials, shrubs and trees on all sides. We obtained proposals from 5 companies, but preferred Mark Simpson’s design and have never regretted going with the largest of the various plans. There is plenty of room for dining, fire pit and seating, and a lounging area. We absolutely love sitting out on the patio in the cool of the mornings and evenings, watching the birds on their feeders and the clouds skimming by in the sky. The hydrangea, fountain grass, mounds of blue geraniums and yellow black-eye Susan, borders of lobelia, together with the hybrid tea roses we planted, are a special delight and provide beautiful views from anywhere in the house.

I'm so sorry that this happened. I had no idea that I had an appointment, because there was nothing on my calendar. It is very frustrating to wait for someone and then not show up. There is no way I wouldn't have shown up had I'd known. I hope that I can make it up to her.

The owner of the company came over to performed an estimate. The person was very polite and seemed knowledgeable. He collected the $150 estimate fee and left. It took weeks for this company to get back to me with the estimate. Then, the estimate was way higher than he verbally stated during his visit. He gave me a lump sum of the cost to get the drain repaired (over 4K) and then I asked several times for a breakdown of the cost and got no response from this company. No one followed up with me to see if I wanted the service, etc. I will not use this company since it looks like they are so busy and all the want is to collect the estimate fee.

Yes, it did take awhile to get back with him on his drainage evaluation and estimate. And yes, it was busy. I sent him an estimate on what it took to do the proper job to fix his his problems. It did come in higher than what I thought it would cost as it sometimes does when you can sit down and put the numbers together. What I suggested was the best and maybe the only way to take care of his issues. He either wanted it done or not. I couldn't break the job down. It's like trying to drive a car with three tires. He also had me estimate some masonary work on his property. I felt like the consultation fee was well worth the price. I would still do the job for him too if he wanted.

Arrived in the 2-4pm window, but closer to 4. My mistake, wouldn't choose that time frame again because the work conflicted with dinner. They were professional and well organized. Didi all the widows in the home. Didn't like the way few of the windows turned out. Would have asked them to redo if i had seen it before they left.

There were two teams who worked on the property, a landscape crew and hardscape crew. Both did great work. The landscape crew was much better at cleaning up their mess at the end of the day. The hardscape crew tended to leave things lying around. At the end of the job, the whole site was cleaned, but the overnight and weekend mess did bother me a bit. Both crews did excellent work and they offer a warranty/guarantee on their work, which is excellent. I had initial problems setting up the contact with East Coast Landscaping, it seems they're email inquiry isn't the best. However, I got prompt service once I called them. There were also a few minor issues communicating changes to the crew, luckily I was around most of the time and could talk to the crew directly. The few times I went through the owner, upon later talking with the crew, I noticed the change wasn't communicated to them. In the end, everything was as I requested and their design was beautiful. They listened to my must haves and took into account that I wanted relatively low maintenance plants. They offered for me to contact them in the spring to do the spring maintenance and I will most likely take them up on the offer. I am real good at killing plants, so it's great that they are willing to come by in the spring and check on the health and wellbeing of the plants.

Excellent job, especially by the installation crew. The design was minimal, but the crew excuted an amazing addition to our backyard.
Description of Work: Design and install retaining wall, walk way, stepping stones and small patio, using pavers and Techobloc.
The wall is beautiful. It's over 8 feet high at its maximum height, and extends the width of my house. It's a really massive retaining wall. They decided to leave the existing wall in place, built the new wall a few feet away, and filled inside with gravel. They installed drainage within, so I shouldn't have the same issues I had with the old wall. Their guys worked very long days, and were friendly, and seemed to really know what they were doing. I had a challenging project because the wall needed to go behind my house, and was not accessible to machinery. They had to bring all of the materials in by hand. They had one problem: they did not know how long Baltimore County takes with permits, so they started the job, then we had to wait a while for the permit, then finish the job. Once they were working again, they were able to finish the job in a little over a week. After the wall was finished, they filled in with soil, planted grass seed, and cleaned everything up, including my driveway. They were a pleasure to work with, the wall came out fantastic, and I would certainly recommend them.

As a fairly experienced gardener, I called this company (with a good reputation, I guess) to ask if the best person for the job of helping me "think outside the box" could come over and give me ideas/estimates on different approaches for fixing an area in our back yard with drainage problems. The rep came, I showed him the area, and asked my questions (including my ideas and those from other companies). The whole time, he kept half-smiling, nodding, saying "uh-huh" and then dismissing most of what I had to say, throwing out a few thoughts, but then contradicting himself, and then telling me the one thing he wanted to do: hardscape a part of the area with synthetic pavers (a catalog for which he just happened to be carrying). Creating better drainage underneath was not one of his ideas. I asked him how he would improve drainage underneath; he said I wouldn't need to because the water would just run off. (Even though we all know that water does seep underneath hard surfaces.) "To where?" I asked. "Over there," he said, casually pointing to the rest of the area (which was still part of the area with poor drainage). "Or, we could make the whole area one big patio - it'd be nice to sit outside here." "I don't want to sit outside here with the AC units and abutting the back of the garage. And besides, that would be pretty expensive, right?" He then pulled out his measuring tape, smiled, and said "Cha- Ching!" and started measuring. I was so shocked I almost asked him to leave right then, but I couldn't find the polite words. At the end, he wanted to know what pavers I thought I might like to order. I think he thought he was funny and clever, but he was neither. He was basically a salesman; he didn't listen, was condescending, seemed to have no real experience with drainage problems, and just had his own tunnel-vision thoughts. He was not the smart and thoughtful problem-solver I had asked for, and certainly not one who should be helping people with unique landscape issues. I wondered if he'd ever actually done this kind of work himself or if he'd just read about it. And, surprise: his proposal was way above anyone else's. The company called 4 times to see if I wanted the work done; I politely declined each time, finally telling them that I'd had a bad experience and wasn't interested.
Description of Work: The provider was a company rep who came to look over an area in our yard w/bad drainage issues, discuss options, and give me an estimate for work.

They are excellent! We knew East Coast earlier and we have seen them work. They gave us an estimate and it was a very difficult work to do. Other people who gave us estimates said that it would take 2 weeks, but East Coast came in it just took them two and half days. I have no problem since then. They removed all the shrubs from the back side of house and they put down grass seeds. They are very nice people to deal with. Staff is wonderful and if I have any questions, they are quick to answer. I would highly recommend them.

It went real well overall. We are very satisfied.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscape did some masonry work.
We would definitely use and recommend East Coast Landscape Design. The crew (both the landscape and hardscape ) were very friendly, answered all our questions and did a wonderful job. The owner (Mark) was very easy going and did not pressure us into doing unnecessary work. Our yard was completely transformed into a more useful space that our could enjoy.
Description of Work: Hardscape our patio, regraded soil around house to prevent water intrusion to the basement, clean up and mulch, remove unwanted tree and shrubs, replant shrubs and flowers, leveled yard and added grass and paving stone walkway.
Mark Simpson was our primary contact for the project. Mark is a personable guy who is very reasonable to deal with and listens to what you are looking for and helps you come up with options. We had lots of questions about options and he helped us talk through those options and decide on what worked best for us. We bid the project to two contractors and East Coast ended up being the more cost effective option. Mark worked with us to keep the costs down which was very much appreciated. Mark was responsive throughout the project, as the design evolved and things came up. We solved problems together and it was highly collaborative. He addressed my concerns as they came up. The foreman on the job - Roberto - really made the project a success. He is a knowledgeable and skilled individual who takes pride in doing a good job on site. He and Mark communicated well during the project and pointed out where they thought we could do things better than we had planned. This was above and beyond and I really appreciated that. They cared enough to help me get a project that we'd be happy with. As with all projects of this size, there were a few issues that came up, but Mark was very reasonable and helpful when they did and their reaction was a testament to their client focus. To me, that's when people show their true nature. East Coast Landscaping was a great experience for us and I would recommend them for your project. I don't do this lightly as I am usually hesitant to make recommendations, but this was a great outcome for us.

Everything went well except for a sump pump power problem which was my fault. It has worked great every time it was needed. The work crew was polite, did their work professionally and rapidly. They cleaned up everything, replaced the grass, covered it with straw and left a beautiful wall, sidewalk and patio. Everyone has admired the landscaping. I could not be more happy with the work that was accomplished.

ECL was prompt in setting the appointment, getting the estimate, and getting the job done. However, there needs to be better communication between the owner and the crew. The day the crew showed up, they thought they had to put mulch down instead of removing 6" of soil. The crew was very hard working, skilled, and professional. However, there were issues in how well the owner communicates with the crew, aside from the crew showing up with mulch (not a big issue for me). For example, I had shown the owner a pine tree stump with roots that went under the path that needed to be lowered during grading. I had told the owner that he should cut the roots and leave the stump alone. This was not relayed to the crew and they appeared surprised when they encountered the roots. The crew assumed that they were supposed to grind the stump and since they did not have a stump grinder with them, they stopped the work. The owner said I had to pay extra for him to rent the equipment to deal with the roots, even though I had pointed out the stump and its roots when he came to make the estimate. It was not after some discussion that I learned that the equipment he was referring to was a stump grinder. Had I not known this, I would not only have had the stump ground down but also have paid for the rental equipment (several hundred dollars). Once this was resolved, the crew returned and cut the roots. Because of this miscommunication between the owner and crew and the delay in removing the roots, part of the path was not lowered before a rain storm dammed the water from flowing out. Consequently it created a flooded area about 15 ft long and drowned and killed about 40% of the thyme that was planted between the path stones. Despite this, I think ECL is a good company, just make sure the owner understands exactly what you need done and communicates with the crew.
