Everything has been terrific! I actually told him when designing my backyard to make it look great, and he did exactly that! Everything was nice and neat. I did have one tree that didn't do well, and he came back to replace the tree at no charge. I will call him again in the spring.
Description of Work: They did work when we first moved into our home and several times since then.

The company was amazing to work with! They designed a beautiful oasis in our backyard, completed the job on time, and within budget. A few months later we called the company back because a couple of the trees did not take root well - within a few days after our call they replaced the trees at no additional cost. East Coast Landscape Design exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend the company to fulfill your landscaping needs.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscape designed our entire back yard beautifully! The design included a water feature, many trees, shrubs, and lighting.

We had received a mailing from Montgomery County (MD) government listing County-approved contractors for a number services. We had been looking to have the walkway redone, and had recently had our front tree taken out. We knew what he had in mind for the design. And so when we received the County mailing, and I saw East Coast Landscape Design listed, I.called for an estimate. Mr. Simpson made an appointment with us, showed up and went through the introductions, and got a feel for what we wanted. Within about two weeks he was back to show us what he had come up with. It was a beautiful design but we had to be more practical and had to trim the design down a bit. Mark was very professional and understanding, and never applied any pressure. We mutually came up with a design plan that looked great and fit our budget. The work was scheduled and the crew that showed up was extremely professional, timely, and courteous. We were amazed by the transformation. We are still waiting for a tree for the front yard that won't be available until later, in the fall. After a heavy rain storm a couple weeks ago, we noticed that one of the shrubs they had planted was tilting out of the ground. I emailed Mark and he promptly had Felix come out and reset the shrub.
Description of Work: We had a new walkway and front steps installed followed by a reworking of our front planting beds; extending and widening them, with new plants. We also had a couple more plants installed in a couple other beds around the house.

Mark from East Coast Landscape Design graciously met with us on a Saturday morning to give us an estimate. He spent almost two hours with us answering questions and coming up with a plan of action for removing the existing patio and steps and replacing them with a flagstone patio and new steps. He was very knowledgeable about all of the products and provided us with all the information we asked for and more. He was friendly and pleasant to work with. The team started work on our patio while we were on vacation (they had an unexpected hole in the schedule and were able to start earlier than they'd previously planned), so we were not home to answer questions. This was the only part that ended up being difficult. There was some miscommunication between Mark and his team on the shape of the patio and the color of a few of the flagstone pavers (we wanted greys and blues, and some of the stones were a little more beige than we liked). We asked the team to send us pictures at the end of each day, though, and were able to make changes by coordinating with Mark over the phone. Although we were initially stressed with seeing these "imperfections," they gladly adjusted the shape and replaced the several stones that we didn't like even though it added another day onto the project. Mark and his team made all of the detailed changes we asked for and completed the job quickly and beautifully. The patio turned out better than we imagined and we absolutely love it. The workmanship is perfect. I was very impressed with the construction team. They were clean, quiet (our neighbors all remarked on how polite and quiet the workers were while we were away), and hard-working. They even carefully transplanted some hydrangeas that were in the way where the new patio would go. They also put down grass seed wherever their tools had worn down the grass and both cleaned up and watered our yard after they were finished with the job.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscape Design removed our existing (old, brick, buckled, sinking) patio and cement steps and replaced both with Pennsylvania Blue Stone flagstone.
From the first meeting with Mark I knew he had a true passion for ponds. His vision and my vision of what it "could" look like was the same. The house had been empty for a year and the pond looked like a mud hole...it seriously needed help. I knew what it could look like. The crew of 3 who actually did the work were professional and worked tirelessly til the last bit of light. The foreman who rebuilt the falls and stream was amazing in working with the stone, a true artist, they were all very skilled. The rest of the crew were so professional. The gentlemen who built the back retaining wall was an artist with the stone. They cleaned up after themselves, were so friendly, answered all my questions. As all the bids were competitive with Marks I chose him because of his passion and vision. From the first phone call to any subsequent communications Mark is a pleasure to work with. The pond area now is an oasis of calm and beauty. Because the waterfall was lifted we can hear the waterfall even when we are on our upper deck. I would use Mark and his company again without reservation. Mark is to return the week of 8/6 as the lights are not working in the pond and we are not sure why but I am confident Mark will fix the problem. When I emailed him to let him know the lights just stopped working he responded in a timely fashion and immediately said he would fix the problem. One of the most ethical companies I have worked with. They more than delivered on what was agreed too and obviously stand behind their work.
Description of Work: POND: Completely "rebuilt" my biofall which included lifting it and turning it so it could be seen from the paver deck. The stream was widened, the front of the pond was redone with flat stone so that it was safe to walk on them. They surprised me by building a retaining wall on the back side of the pond (that had been over grown with ivy) and put in a planter box using flat stone that was "puzzel pieced" together. They cleaned the pond which was more then dirty . Added lights and plants. River rock was added in the front of the pond. My paver deck where the pond sits really needed some work. The edges were falling in, not only did they add a stabilizing metal edge they made sure all the paver stones were "secure", they worked the entire day and did much more than expected, also clean it, when the were finished it looked new. I got 3 bids and they were all competitive with Marks bid.

They’re non responsive. They came out and looked at the place and gave me an initial estimate and I called back an they were supposed to send me a revised estimate and I haven’t heard anything from them or the electrician that came out that works with them. They said we will call you back within 24 hours and I haven’t heard from the owner yet. It’s like making an appointment with the dentist. They do a lovely work and they know how much work they do and when he came out to do the estimate he tells me that he’s been doing this for 36 years and he knows what he was doing. I had questions to ask him and he made me feel uncomfortable to begin with. Now I am chasing him around to get an answer from him. The estimate was way too expensive.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscape Design was meant to provide me with the estimate for a repair work on the front. They came out looked at the issue and I’ve been waiting for their response.

This is the second time I've been out to this prospects house. I was very responsive and on time for my appointments like I always am, and I answered all of her questions and then some. I also recommended someone that we work with to do the railings for her. She tried to get him to do the whole job and leave me out of the picture. And of course, she knows everything. I sent her timely estimate and also followed up. That's the time she inquired about the railings. I provided everything that she wanted. She has not one reason for complaint. This caustic complaint goes without warrant, and if you research us, you not see another complaint like it. Granted, I'm not perfect ( just ask my wife), but we have very few complaints like this . I'm glad we didn't get the job, for she would have turned to be a nightmare.

A few months ago, we had Mark over for an estimate of services. Now that spring is upon us, we decided to hire them to muck out our waterfall/pond feature in our rear yard which obviously had not been maintained in a while (we had just purchased this home). The guys Mark sent to the job were very courteous, neat, and polite. My husband was at home the whole time, he had lots of questions, and they took the time to answer his questions. It was a very tedious and dirty task but they did a very thorough job. Overall we were pleased w/ the experience and would hire Mark again.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscape Design came over to maintain the waterfall and pond feature in my backyard. They removed the fish, drained the water, inspected the pump and filters, cleaned off all the algae/growth from the rocks, relaid the pond mat and rocks, refilled w/ water and additives to control algae, replaced the fish, then cleaned up everything on their way out.

A big plus as far as we were concerned is that the company was very pleasant to work with. They noticed (without our prompting) that one tree seemed not to be doing well and replaced it promptly. The workmen all seemed well trained and were easy to deal with. The man in charge of the pavers is very skillful and knowledgeable. We are so pleased we had them back fora spring tuneup.
Description of Work: East Coast drew up a landscape plan for our front yard a year ago. We were anxious as this was a complete remake of our front yard including the sidewalk and front steps. As we are basically do-it ourselves we also thought the cost was high. But we went ahead and are very pleased that we did. The yard looks attractive, neat, well cared for. and is low maintenance The paver work on the sidewalk and steps improves the appearance tremendously. We received may compliments from our neighbors.

It was a big project. They did a good job but there were some things I would have done differently in terms of getting input from the owner. He kind of took over and I don't think he listened to me or tailored it to my house but he did a very nice job. I have gotten a lot of compliments from it. It took 6-8 weeks to do the work. It was about $5,000 for the cleanup. Some of the perennials have died. He had ideas about what to do and he sort of took over. I liked his ideas. I only have one outdoor spigot to water the plants and he should have taken things like that into consideration when picking the different plants. He didn't really go into how to maintain it which would have helped. He was very organized but it is organized through his specifications. I needed the guidance but I got a little too much guidance and I wanted more input. I wanted him to think of things that I wouldn't think of. It is beautiful but he didn't figure out how to maintain it and I needed that because I've never had a yard before. His follow up wasn't the best. I had asked for some hardscape in the landscape design to put the trash cans on and it wasn't done. I asked for an estimate and he never got back to me with that. His follow up wasn't the best on certain things. He has followed up on some things. Generally speaking he did what he was going to do and he did a good job. I am happy with it and it is very nice. They came out when they said they would. There were certain plants they couldn’t get until the spring and they did follow up with bringing them in the spring. It was expensive, but it was reasonable. He didn’t let me know when they were coming; they just showed up. I would consider using them again.
Description of Work: I used East Coast Landscape Design to do hardscaping and a new patio. They cleaned out the backyard and took down 5 medium sized trees that were 20 feet tall. They took down pieces of an old fence and a shed. They put in a retaining wall. They also did landscaping with a lot of perennials. They did a lot in the backyard.

Mark Simpson was very professional. He was very clear with his proposal and the work that was done looks great. I am very happy with the quality of the workmanship.
Description of Work: I got three estimates for a patio and sidewalk for the side of my house, and East Coast was the third. I thought it would be the most expensive because I had gone on the website and saw the nice quality work that this company had done. To my surprise, their estimate was the lowest. Mark did mention that he reduced the price based on the time of year, when business was slower. They constructed a 4' walk from the driveway to the fence, and then continued into the backyard to create a landing area where the steps end from the side entrance of our house.

East Coast Landscape was excellent to work when we were seeking a bid for backyard projects. We very much wanted to hire them. Mark great ideas and it really appears that he takes pride in the quality of the work. Unfortunately, we chose another contractor that offered a cheaper solution for the project we chose to do first. Note that estimates they gave on some other projects compared favorably. Mark shows a great personal interest in achieving solutions that work and I would definitely hire them in the future.

The design, which included many plants, a few small trees, path lighting and a walkway, was excellent. We've gotten many compliments on how it looks, particularly on the walkway, which is made of pavers. The company responded well to our comments and questions. The cost seemed a bit high, but we did not carefully research the cost of similar services. The end product was very well done. The process, however, was pretty painful. They seemed to do things in an illogical order; for example, paving the walkway first, then putting in wiring for the lighting, which had to go under the walkway. The work took much longer than they said.. We had to remind them of several things they promised to do Bottom line: if you stay on top of them, you get an excellent product.

My interaction with East Coast was good. The price was very good. We got a couple different quotes from Angie's List providers and they had the lowest quote. They finished the job pretty quickly and it looks good.
Description of Work: East Coast Landscaping Design put in a bamboo barrier for us.
The first phase of the work consisted of completing the work in the back garden and removing or moving several large shrubs in the front of the house. All the gardens were marked out and edged. This was all completed in one day. The hardscaping in the front of the house was done in the second phase. It took 2-3 men about 3 days to complete the project. The final phase involved doing all the planting, redirecting the front downspout through the landscape. Followup included watering instructions, tips on keeping the landscape looking good, and recommendations for annual followup. We were very pleased with the result and found the workmen professional, courteous, and punctual throughout. Mark Simpson's responsiveness and attention to detail ensured that everything went smoothly from start to finish.
Description of Work: Removed/moved numerous shrubs in rear garden and cut back, trimmed, and shaped remaining shrubs. For front garden, Mark Simpson prepared a landscape design that we approved. His team removed retaining wall of manufactured stone, built new wall, and faced existing concrete walkway with flagstone. Created new, larger garden across the front of the house and selected and planted a variety of shrubs and plants. Moved some existing plants in accordance with the design.

Mark spent a large amount of time reviewing the property and the drainage problem; he understood the issues in landscaping near the woods (with deer); he listened to what we wanted in designing a functional, low-maintenance, economical and attractive landscape appropriate for the setting; his crew spent approximately 4 days installing a new underground drainage system diverting water away from the house and installing the landscape; they planted ground cover so that it should fill in well within 1-2 years; the plants he used appear to be of very high quality and all plantings seem to be flourishing; they repaired a low stone wall. Mark was always very responsive and called during the work of the project, letting us know when they were getting started, and confirming the progress of the work and letting us know when it was expected to be completed. We are very pleased with the work that was done, and plan on using them again in the future. They are not the cheapest company, but the value in their thoughtful design, and high quality materials and planting is worth it.
Description of Work: Design and landscaping of 2 sides of the house with water drainage rerouting; challenging project in that planting is limited due to wooded setting and frequent deer presence, and home is built below street level and erosion had begun on property as water continues to flow down a hill.

I called, left a message and didn't hear back. I called again 2 days later, Mark answered the phone but told me he was in the car & couldn't take notes - he'd call back when he was back in the office that evening. Didn't call. 4 days later, I called one more time. He apologized for not getting back to me and said his office manager had recently gotten ill. We set up a time to meet at my house for the next week. He didn't show up to the meeting and didn't call. I called him the next day, and he told me he had lost my address and phone number. He promised he would be there 2 days later. He did show up but didn't seem very attentive and said he would have an estimate within a few days. After a week, I emailed him to tell him we wanted to make a decision. 4 days later, he emailed saying he had gone on vacation, but didn't apologize for not telling me. I emailed back saying we wanted the estimate ASAP, and he replied we should go with someone else since he was scheduling 2 months out.
Description of Work: No work was performed because we never got an estimate. I was very hopeful to use him because my friends had really liked his service on their front yard, and I would rather go with a company I know has performed good work rather than picking someone out of a hat. Unfortunately he didn't think our roughly $10,000 job was important enough to him to work hard for my business.
