While he was here, everything was fine. He arrived when he said he would. He seemed fine when he was here. Seemed trustworthy. He just didn't follow up. And if he did follow up via email, it never came through. He never followed up via phone, either. Now I have to look for another company to provide the same quotes.
Description of Work: I had contacted him because I wanted to get a quote for a bathroom fan installed and a quote for extra power for my garage. There was something funny with my configuration that was stumping him. He said he would think it over and get back to me but I never heard back from him. That was about 2-3 weeks ago.

It was not in fact the outside outlet, so there was a lot of detective work needed to isolate the cause - the team did an amazing job and even stayed past the end of their shift to get everything fixed and working. In the end they traced it to an incorrectly terminated junction box in our attic, but they first had to find and check all of the other outlets in the room (some of which were hiding behind shelves full of books. It was a time-consuming effort that really required their expertise - I would have never found this on my own. They were delightful every step of the way and I would hire them again in a instant. Despite staying late to find and fix the root cause, they were willing to take a little more time to install modern GFCI outlets on the outside of my house to ensure that we could put up our holiday lights safely.
Description of Work: I lost power to a room in my house, I thought it was a bad gfci outlet but wasn't sure and I needed power restored

Excellent, excellent, excellent. Mr. Hyman was so honest and helpful and I would like to commend Mr. Hyman for his integrity. My husband and I will definitely go to Mr. Hyman's company in the future. Once you find an honest and competent contractor, you know they are special and Mr. Hyman deserves the business. Thank you very much Mr. Hyman.
Description of Work: I called for help with fixing a bathroom fixture that was not working. It had a halogen bulb. Mr. Hyman explained that it in my particular situation as I described that it would be more cost effective to have the fixture replaced. My husband and I bought the fixture and were able to replace it ourselves. However, the rate that Mr. Hyman quoted was very reasonable and if we could not have replaced it, we would have hired Mr. Hyman's company for this job. We will go to his company in the future for any electrical work we need because of his integrity.

Communication was top notch, Bill responded and communicated very timely either by phone or text. He was true to his word. The work was done very professionally, the rep even wore booties (boot covers) when he entered my house. He worked fast and efficient, showed me his findings, and explained the solution and cost. Service was up and running again that same visit. I would use them again and recommend them 100%.
Description of Work: Troubleshoot basement living room and bedroom outlet plug outage (6 were not working). Inspected and replaced outlet plugs and plates. Replaced an outlet box in the basement bedroom and fixed wiring that was located outside the box when it should have been inside the electrical box. Installed new circuit breaker to correct a double tap situation.

Wanted to install a timer for an outdoor fixture. Purchased the timer from Home Depot, but the wiring instructions were unclear since the purchased item said it was for a three pole (2 separate switches) and one pole application (only one controlling on/off switch), but the directions were only for a three pole application and my fixture is a one pole. We exchanged emails and phone calls and I got the timer installed. However after all that, the electronic timer was faulty and could not be programmed. So, Bill Hyman recommended a lower tech timer (mechanical rotating) also sold by Home Depot and I purchased it, installed it, and it's now working. Bill Hyman was extremely gracious with his time and was prompt.

They came on the day they said they would and called about 30 minutes before arriving. Both electricians put booties over their shoes before coming into the house (very much appreciated). I showed them what I wanted done and they immediately went to work. To change some of the outlets they needed to move furniture and beds and they took care of that without any problems. There was a lot to do so they were in the house for a few hours. I felt comfortable enough to go outside and do yard work while they did their work inside the house. They were professional at all times and did a great job including cleaning up after they were done. I would definitely use them again.

We contacted Hyman and left a message on a Saturday after losing power in part of our house. Bill Hyman texted me shortly after I left a message with some tips to trouble shoot our problem. Bill was kind enough to call and talk through some things we could do to try to find the source of the problem. He did not have any availability over the weekend but scheduled us for the first appointment on Monday. The electricians were prompt, very knowledgeable and quickly resolved our issue.

They specialize in older houses (mine is 60 years old). They did a great job of finding problems and fixing them. They were very honest about what should be done versus what didn't need to be done and called the head of the company when there was an issue that might be pricey. I have used them again already.

Our house is more than 60 years old, and had an original kitchen exhaust fan built into a wall which was brick on the exterior. The fan generally worked, but had a spell this summer where it was so gummy it stopped working. It is difficult to find replacement fans for that kind of 60 year old fan. When I was in contact with Hyman Electric concerning another job this sum, I talked to Mr. Hyman about the fan and he suggested some steps to get it operating again that wouldn't cost anything. And he made solid suggestions on the unrelated problems I was talking to him about where he suggested I take some steps on my own before he send out his crew. Those steps didn't cost anything. He also told me that if I was interested in a replacement fan he would keep his eyes open; replacement fans that would fit were hard to find. It turned out that thanks to his advice I was able to resolve my other electrical problems. Meanwhile, my kitchen fan started up on its own to work, but I told Mr. Hyman I would be interested in a replacement. He was able to find a new one that fit perfectly; his crew came out on November 4 and installed it. It is a more efficient fan than the old one, and looks much better. While the price was $1200, I felt it was cheap because of all the free advice that he has given me.

Jeremy and Kevin would extremely nice and professional. My husband called and Jeremy explained it to him (because I really don't understand all this stuff). They checked the entire house out and replaced the outlets in a very timely manner. They even petted my 3 big dogs and were very careful to relock the gates and double check them for me in the back yard - Other contractors have not been as careful resulting in escaping dogs! The safety of my animals is of extreme importance to me, so they fact that they double checked the gates is just wonderful. I was extremely pleased with the service and friendliness of the everyone at the firm. I know, from experience, what it mean to be a Super Service Award Winner, and that is the reason I contacted them. I will certainly use them again for our next electrical job which hopefully won't be an emergency call.
Description of Work: One of our outlets, failed on Wed. night at 10:30 thereby leaving our freezer and modems not working. It was the GFCI (reset switch) outlet and I needed an electrician fast. I called Mr. Hyman around 8:30 am and he promised me he would have his crew, Jeremy and Kevin come around noon. They were here between noon and 1pm and suggested we replace all the outlets with GFCI outlets that were on that electrical "loop" - garage, all bathrooms and outside outlets, bringing the house up to code for Montgomery County. Jeremy said I could replace the one outlet, but it would not be up to code or as safe. I thought we would have to have a heavy up done to accommodate the freezer - he didn't think that would be necessary as everything had been working fine up until Wed. night. So I decided to bring the house of to code and they replaced all the outlets mentioned above.

Bill was a terrific potential contractor who came within a day of my call to him. He took his time going throughout the house with me examining the current electrical situation, listening to what we were considering, and offering several terrific and thoughtful suggestions about how to retrofit the house and update it without loosing its vintage charm. Bill also got back to us quickly with a reasonable and competitive bid for the initial work -- the heavy up -- which is needed before other projects begin. Although we went with another contractor who has worked in the past with the professional who will act as our general contract, I had very favorable impressions of Bill's expertise and capabilities based on this initial contact.
Description of Work: I called the contractor requesting an estimate for and electrical heavy up as well as to discuss a wide range of changes we are considering to our 1949-build home which hasn't had much TLC during the years our children were growing up and need it now. The owner, Bill Hyman, came immediately.

Bill Hyman has been doing this a long time and was already very familiar with upgrades in houses in our neighborhood. Have split level, so wiring is sortof crazy on outside of house. Felt very comfortable with him... And he was very patient with all my questions! His two guys (jeremy and ?) showed up on time and while jeremy did the panel upgrade, the other guy worked outside on the main line. I was simply amazed at the incredible neatness of wires when he was done in the box. A work of art. When finishing up, they tested that everything electric was functioning. We also had a complication of having a whole house generator, which was not a problem for them. Even when Jeremy found a box that was not capped properly ( suspect old line that used to go to kitchen which was disconnected in a kitchen renovation) , he fixed it and explained it to me. It is all about safety!! it was not on the check list but still was done. Guys were really nice. I have not had any electric problems since all the work. I will definitely use them again. Very local business...just up the road...so another thing to like about Hyman. Oh, and got a call from Bill after the work was done. Personal touch. Making sure that i understood about the inspections and what PEPCO would do and when they would do it. If i had any questions, "please call us". Now that is customer service!!
Description of Work: Upgraded our panel to 200 amps. Replaced the main power line on the outside of the house which was showing bare wires. Coordinated all activity including county inspection and PEPCO work. Installed carbon dioxide detector.

We identified Bill Hyman and his team from Angie's list because they "specialized in older homes" (ours was built in the 1920s, and because they had A ratings, good reviews, and a 2014 Outstanding Service Award. Our experience proved to us that they definitely deserved those ratings and award. Bill was highly responsive to our initial call, and within a couple of days his team - Jeremy and Sam - came to look at and estimate the work we called about, a circuit to our free-standing garage that had ceased working and would require re-wiring. They gave a clear immediate run-down on options for doing the work, and Jeremy identified a potential hazardous aspect of the circuit and disconnected it on the spot (for free - he said, "we'll call it part of the estimate"). Then the real work began. When we went into the house to look at connections at the breaker box, which had been in place since before we bought the house over 20 years ago, Jeremy recognized the box as a type (Pacific Electric) that had lost UL certification because of fire hazard. He explained what replacing it would involve, and suggested that we research it online for ourselves. He also noted that our existing service (100 amp) was a minimal level (grandfathered, but below present code). He said that once we decided what we wanted to do and let them know, they would respond as soon as possible. There was no pressure in any of this discussion, but when I did the research that same day I found that the hazard he had identified was very real - even though we'd previously had other electricians in the house for other small jobs, nobody had ever told us about this issue before. It was Friday; I called and Bill said he'd get the team back first thing on Monday. They arrived promptly at 9:00 and spent the whole day disassembling the old box, installing a new box (with room to grow), establishing the wiring for 200 amp service, reconnecting and testing everything, comprehensively labeling the circuits in the new box, and cleaning up completely. Bill also set up the county inspection required before Pepco can activate the 200 amp line. When the county inspectors arrived two days after the job was done, the lead inspector opened the new breaker box, inspected the wiring that Jeremy had done, and said "Beautiful work!" At some point we will get the garage circuit fixed - when we do, it will be the Hyman crew that does it. We couldn't recommend them more highly.

I honestly cannot say enough good things about Bill. My wife and I had a house under contract that was inspected. We are first time home buyers in the area. The inspector had some concerns regarding the electrical panel. My intention was to pay an electrician to come out and evaluate the electrical panel. I called roughly 6 electricians. I had one scheduled to come out, and he was going to charge $300. When Bill called me back, he requested I send over my inspection report. He looked over the pictures, even called the inspector, and over the phone gave me his recommendation for free. It was incredible. I learned so much from talking to him. Based on his recommendation, we ended up walking away from the house. He saved us a ton of money. I am still looking for a home, but I know if I have any questions about the electrical in a house, Bill will be the first person I call. I highly recommend him.

Bill Hyman was great! I originally contacted another electrician who did not service my area; they referred me to Bill. He responded promptly to emails; came to the house to do a walk-through and provided a thorough estimate. He worked with our schedule to complete the work, and the county inspector said the quality of the work looked great! I would definitely use him again.
