We checked the list and received estimates from 3 electricians for the work we needed. We needed to install 14 recessed lights, replace two existing fixtures, install two ceiling fans and one new ceiling light. The gentleman who came for our estimate was professional and very nice. However, he asked to see our curcuit panel and told us that our entire circuit panel needed to be replaced to the tune of $2300. This sounded suspicious to me since when we moved in 5 years ago our inspector made a point of telling us about what good shape it was in especially with the copper wiring. When I had another company come in for their estimate I asked them to check the panel to see if anything was of concern. I didn't tell them the specifics of what the Hyman electrician told me. This other electrician noted that it was in fine shape, especially considering the copper wiring (same words our inspector had used). I then told him about what Hyman had noted and he said what they told me was nonsense and they were probably just trying to make an extra buck or two. Needless to say we didn't hire William Hyman.
Description of Work: No services performed, only gave an estimate.

Response from William G Hyman Electrical Contractor
We were sorry to read your negative report regarding the estimate we provided. Though I can't say we were surprised, as this happens much in our industry. As a master electrician with expertise in old houses, sometimes when we identify an obscure problem, the customer does not like the news and turns around and hires a less experienced electrician who only puts a band-aid on a potentially large problem. I believe that is what has happened in this instance. William G Hyman Electric operates with the highest integrity and our electricians are trained in dealing with the most complex problems; something not all electricians can claim. We do not sell anything to a client that we would not recommend to our own mothers. But if we find a problem – or a potential problem – we feel that it is our duty to tell the client and provide a solution. In this case, Jeremy, one of our best technicians, identified a problematic circuit panel that may not have been able to accommodate the additional circuits required for work that you desired (the installation of several recessed lights, ceiling fans and an overhead light) and will most certainly cause a problem in the future. We are very thorough in the work that we do and pay great attention to detail, which has earned us much acclaim from our many satisfied customers. When William G Hyman Electric does the job, it is done with the highest quality and professionalism from start to finish, as you'll see from the mostly wonderful reviews we receive here on Angie's List. That means that we are almost never called back down the road to fix a problem we would have seen at the outset. We don't put band-aids on problems; we fix them. Period.

The one criticism is that the company was pushy about finding more work to do - for example, insisting that building codes called for all our kitchen outlets be grounded - which would have costed 2k additional, as well as putting in bathroom exhaust fans and running some sort of 'total maintenance package' which sounded like a moneymaker for the company. In their favor, they did assess we did not need a new electrical breaker box, which other electricians really wanted to change out.
Description of Work: Ran a 10-amp line from the basement to upstairs bathrooms and installed GFCI plugs in both bathrooms and relocated a switch in one of the bathrooms. Changed out old wall outlet (recepticles), fixed a rusted up kitchen garbage disposal. Al was efficient and took extra pains to find a way to run a line through our interior walls without having to punch a hole through from the outside or rip open more drywall than necessary. He did an estimate in the morning (arriving on time) and did the job the same day, sticking to the estimate. (we had other estimates done previously, and other electricians charged similar prices but insisted they would have to punch a hole in the outside wall). When the job looked too big for Al to take care of in one day, he called in extra help to make sure he finished. They charged us very little for fixing the garbage disposal ($45) - an extra job we had tacked on. They got it all done before 5 pm, having started at 10 am with an estimate.

They were very good and very responsive. We had a couple of problems with installation of the fan, but that was partly the fan?s fault and not theirs. The owner came out, and he was very good. It just took a couple of days to install it because of the problems we had. We had them called them for a quote, and we would use them again in the future.

Diagnosed that part of the circuit that was dead was downstream of GFCI outlet, and reset it. Electrician offered to rewire so the two were independent, and we agreed. He performed the rewiring promptly. Overall, easy and nice to deal with.

Three-phased project, so they came out at least 3-4 times plus Alec's visit for estimate. The estimate was very confusing, which led to an error on my part regarding the total amount for the whole project (looked like $3500 - ended up being $5500). Not an insignificant amount to be sure. Again, the error was mine but I don't think wouldn't have happened had the estimate been more clear (or reworked after various options were finalized). Once we got past that (which came up during the second visit when Jeremy handed me an invoice), the work itself was very good. I'm extremely detail oriented and Hyman's crew certainly met my expectations. All the work was very neatly done thanks to Jeremy's attention to detail. Over the course of the project, we had a few hitches though: (1) the manufacturer (and my own research) indicated that the duct work for the remote attic fan should be insulated. They'd installed non-insulated ducting and told me it would be fine. After talking it over with Bill & Jeremy though, they did come back and replace everything with insulated ducting much to my satisfaction. (2) I wanted to re-use a fixture from my lower bath shower for my workroom, but after they took it out it disappeared. It was a perfectly good fixture and I was surprised I wasn't asked if I wanted it. Again though, Jeremy addressed this by promising a credit or a replacement. When I paid my final invoice, I brought this up to Bill for the credit. He then checked with Jeremy who he said told him the fixture was no good and had been thrown away. After some discussion, Bill agreed to replace the fixture. When I told him I planned to use it in my work room, he suggested a flourescent light. To my amazement, he shipped me a 36" double ballister! Awesome! (3) The fan in the basment developed a humming noise within a couple of weeks - they replaced the motor for me. Can't ask for more than that. I wanted to point out these issues not because they occured, but because of the way Hyman addressed them. I'm still reeling from the sticker shock of this job (to be honest, I thought $3500 was expensive - $5500? Wow, still hurts when I think about it). HOWEVER, the work quality and customer service was impressive. That said, let me explain my marks: Price: Gave them a B for obvious reasons. These guys are expensive, but they're worth it in my view. Quality: I almost gave them a B here because the insulated duct work for the remote fan should have been installed in the first place. Every bit of research I did on this AND the manufacturer of the fan highly recommend insulated duct work on anything running through a non-air conditioned space to prevent moisture from building up in the system. Plus, given these prices I wasn't going to accept anything less than the best. On balance, these guys were d*** good so they deserve this A. Responsivemess: Top notch. Punctuality: On a couple of the visits they were signifianctly late (almost 2 hours). This wouldn't have been a big deal expect that on those occasions I needed them to finish up so my other contractors could proceeed. Again, long project with multiple visits, so nothing to get in a twist about. Professionalism: Good marks here for sure. Addressed my concerns throughout the project and wnet above and beyond with the replacement light as well as several other issues. The ONLY reason they don't get an A here is that Bill asked me to give him an A rating here on Angie's List when I paid my last invoice. Not a professional thing to do in my view. Bottom line? I will use them again (and there's still a lot of electrical work to be done in my house). Next time though, I'll make sure they give me an estimate that is 100% clear so I don't get surprised when I get a bill. That was, in all fairness, as much my fault as it was theirs. Hard to go wrong with Hyman - I trust my next rating for them will be A's across the board.
Description of Work: Wired 3 bathrooms with independent GFI outlets, lights over showers, lights over sinks, exhaust fan in lower bath (vented through brick wall), Remote attic fan for other two bathrooms (hall and master), dimmer switches and timers for lights and fans in all bathrooms, wired and installed new light for linen closet, new junction box for some previously shoddy wiring in master bath, other misc electrical work.

The electrician was very professional and explained what he was doing as he went along. He cleaned up the mess after each job before working on the next item. The quality of his work was good and he paid attention to detail -- such as trying to align the new GFCI with the switches in the bathroom.
Description of Work: (1) Added a GFCI and replaced 2 existing switches in bathroom (2) installed a switch for attic fan (3) examined an outlet that my surge protector indicated was not wired properly (4) replaced 4 outlets with GFCIs and replaced 1 switch in kitchen (5) replaced a switch and a light fixture in basement storage room (6) replaced a GFCI and the cover for an outside outlet (7) gave an estimate for future jobs

After the appointment was originally scheduled, it had to be moved a day because the company had not been aware of a major job on that day. The crew did come promptly early in the morning, and the head of the crew seemed experienced and gave good advice on needed services. I felt a lot of confidence in them. However, after they told me the work was finished the next day, and I returned to the house after they had left, it turned out they had not completed their inspection of their work and about a quarter of the electrical circuits in the new electrical box had not been connected. When I spoke to them the next morning, they appropriately apologized and finished the work properly. They were friendly and appeared to be highly competent so I will give them the benefit of the doubt on the mistakes that were made and expect I will use them again.

Hyman Electric showed up on time for the estimate, and while a bit higher than a few of the others, they seemed well suited for the project. They worked around our schedule to pick a date for the service, showed up on time and were very professional! (It rained while they were working outside on the new lines and they got soaked! When they came back into our house, they put down tarps and removed their shoes to prevent our carpets from getting dirty! I am a picky person so this was a big plus for me!!). They removed the old panel box and fuses and installed new circuit breakers. In accordance with Mont. Co. code, they installed new ground lines. They finished in a timely manner and well within their estimate. They saw everything through until the final inspection from the county - which passed with no problems at all. I would certainly recommend them for heavy up service. In fact, we are thinking of adding some additional recessed lighting into our living room and we will most certainly use them again! Job Well Done!

An attic fan installed 13 months earlier by another company died 1 month after the warranty expired. I called Hyman Electric and Alex came over very quickly to assess the problem (broken fan blade). I said I wanted to replace the fan with one with a more powerful motor and he explained my options. We set a date for installment but, because the weather was very hot and the new fan was in stock, he returned within a day. The fan he installed was larger and more powerful than the original and cost less. He also added an on-off switch as a safety precaution.

Two electricians arrived promptly in the morning. I initially provided them with an overview of what needed to be done, and they went to work immediately, dividing the work between the two. One replaced the kitchen light and the other checked for two possible shorts - one in the utility room and one in the laundry room. Neither turned out to be shorts, but instead the one light fixture in the utility room just needed to be tightened, and the light fixture in the laundry room needed to be replaced. The gentlemen were very polite and very professional. They completed the work accurately and quickly and provided quotes on some potential additional work, including the potential replacement of the light fixture in the laundry room.

It went well. I was especially impressed when they didn't have any availability for the week we wanted and suggested one of their competitors. (Turns out the other guys weren't free either so we stayed with Hyman.) They called back when the promised to set the time. The actual electrician did show up later than the window we asked for. But once here, he was thorough, friendly and got the job done. He also cleaned up behind himself.

We are happy the customer was pleased with our overall performance on this job, but we’d like to address the lower grade we received on punctuality because Hyman Electric strives for excellence in all aspects of its business. The location of the job was in an area where parking is nearly impossible. In fact, our technician had to circle the area for a good 15 minutes before deciding to take a chance and park in a no-parking zone more than a block away so as not to hold up the customer. (Incidentally, he did get a $50 parking ticket, but that’s the way it goes.) He walked the client through the various steps of the job and the costs involved before commencing work. The client signed off on everything and our technician did the job in the efficient, expeditious and professional manner that has become Hyman Electric’s reputation.

On March 6, I lost power to alll second-floor rooms in the back of my house. Because this was unprecedented, I was afraid to tamper with the circuit panel. I called Mr. Hyman because he had so many favorable ratings on Angie's list. He responded promptly, sending a technician on March 7 and a crew to do the repairs described above (first job) on March 10. He mentioned that I had squirrel damage to the outside of the house, which needed to be repaired, and recommended a contractor, Mr. Wasli, with whom he had worked. For almost three weeks, everything worked perfectly. During this period, Mr Hyman phoned several times, inquiring whether everything was working and requesting that I submit a report to Angie's List if I was satisfied. . For some reason, I didn't get around to submitting a report immediately. Almost three weeks after the firrst incident (for which I had paid $2,500), the same circuit tripped again. I promptly called Mr. Hyman and asked whether the $2,500 would cover subsequent repairs, since the circuit panel was apparently not the source of the problem. He said that it would not, because the panel would have soon needed to be replaced.. He sent another technician (Alec) to identify the problem. Alec said that the problem was squirrel damage to wires in the attic and that Mr. Wasli could remove the squirrels from the attic before making the outside repairs to prevent their re-entry. Alec's estimate was $1,200-1,300. When next I contacted, Mr. Hyman, he said that he could not quote a price (pressed for a "worst case scenario," he said that this job could run as high as $2,500) or tell me approximately how long these repairs would take. He also said that I would have to a trapper for squirrel removal (which Mr. Wasli could not do) before he could make the electrical repairs. I reminded him what Alec had told me, and Mr. Hyman said that Alec "misspoke." Because I didn't want to go back to Square 1 with another electrician, I decided to stick with Mr. Hyman. During the next 3 1/2 weeks I selected a trapper (final cost: $375), notified Mr. Wasli that I would use his services (cost: $1,200), and went without power in the two bathrooms and bedroom upstairs. Mr. Hyman had recommended not resetting the circuit for fear of an electrical fire. Finally, on April 29, Mr. Hyman's technician, Jeremy, along with his assistant, Seth, made the necessary repairs. Jeremy inspired confidence; he was certain he had identified and corrected the underlying problem(cost a pleasant surprise: "only" $930). Jokingly, he noted that he never got callbacks. Of all the people at W. G. Hyman with whom I dealt, Jeremy is the only one I would hire again with no reservations. Response from William G Hyman Electrical Contractor
This write-up has left my crew and me scratching our heads for a number of reasons. We personally went out of our way throughout the month-long process of identifying the many moving parts of the customer’s electrical problems and addressing them one by one until we were satisfied that we had fully resolved the matter. First, we received a call on a Saturday – when we normally don’t take business calls – that an elderly customer had lost power to part of her house and had no way of resetting her breaker. As a good neighbor, not just businessman, I asked one of my technicians to go to her house over the weekend– on his own time– to assist her with resetting the breaker. This was done free of charge as a personal courtesy and the client was very grateful that we did not charge her for the service call. The next day, on a Sunday, the client called back to say that the breaker had tripped again and asked us to come out the following day, Monday. The same technician, who had dropped by on his own time on Saturday, went back out to the house to investigate the matter further. What he found was severe corrosion in the main circuit panel and, based on the age and condition, we suggested that the panel be replaced along with the breakers. The customer agreed with our assessment and gave the go-ahead for the job. We also stated at that time that we could not be absolutely sure that our treatment would fully rectify the problem, but it was important that we change the breaker panel and ensure that it was not contributing to the cause of the problem. So, the next day, we upgraded the electrical services and replaced the panel and breakers. While the crew was at work, I stopped by the house to see the customer and oversee the situation. Again, I informed the customer that it was not possible for us to be entirely sure that we had pinpointed the exact cause of the problem. I also provided an additional rough estimate of costs should it be necessary to install an additional circuit to the top floor in order to supplement the existing load. While surveying the work, I noticed that there were holes outside of the attic in the soffit where it had been possible for squirrels to make their way into the attic and I brought this to the attention of the customer. She responded that there had been squirrels in her attic for years and apparently had done nothing about it. Over the next three weeks, I checked in periodically with the customer on the status of our work. Each time she reported that everything was working properly. However, about a month after the initial service call, the customer contacted us again to report that the circuit had gone off again. We immediately dispatched another electrician who determined that there had been significant damage to the wiring in the attic because of the squirrel problem and that the wiring would have to be replaced. The technician quoted an estimate in the $1,300 range. However, realizing that we could not determine the full extent of the damage until we could completely trace the wiring through the fiberglass insulation, and taking into consideration the number of years that the squirrels had been living in the attic, I told the customer that the costs could go as high as $2,500, depending on what we found. I also suggested that before we repaired the wiring, the customer should consider calling in a professional trapper to remove the squirrels and seal all of the holes to prevent re-entry. She did just that and once the trapper had done his work, we were called in to proceed with the electrical repairs. We sent a crew the next day and after searching through all of the wires and replacing the damaged ones, the customer received a bill for $930.00. The customer remarked to the technician – the third one involved in the job since the beginning – how pleased she was that the final bill came in below the lowest estimate we had provided for the wiring repair. So, considering that in all of our dealing with this particular customer, we went out of our way to make sure that she had superior service– from sending an electrician out on his day off, and at no charge, to reset the breaker, to personally checking in on the situation to identify the root problem– it is disheartening and a bit befuddling to receive a negative posting. I also feel that there’s a bit of misplaced blame here. From the customer’s write-up, it seems as if we are being blamed for the costs and efforts of finally dealing with a lingering squirrel infestation. I am happy that the customer has taken care of that problem and that we were able to address the electrical problems caused by the squirrel damage. I hope that my explanation and walk-through of this particular project will show prospective customers that our firm always operates with integrity, will go above and beyond to solve any problem and will not stop until the matter is completely resolved, all at a fair cost. It is true that you cannot please every client, but my crew and I feel that we did everything that we could to resolve this situation in not only our trademark timely and professional manner, but also with a personal and caring touch.

They were prompt and professional and completed the work we needed; it has worked fine. We had bought the house four months ago, and they made recommendations for other electrical work we might need to do in the near future, but without any pressure. My only complaint is that there was a good deal of sawdust left from where they drilled through the floor, and no attempt was made to clean it up or to protect our belongings from the sawdust. We were getting the work done quickly and didn't have time to do any comparison shopping - we thought it was a little expensive for one outlet, though they did have to run the line almost all the way through the house, so maybe that accounts for it. Overall a good experience.
Description of Work: We were moving our refrigerator to put in a new stove, and we needed to install a dedicated electric outlet for the new refrigerator location. They ran a line from the breaker box in the basement up through the floor and into the kitchen and installed the new outlet.
