The guys that came out were very friendly and professional. I feel confident that the work was done correctly.
Description of Work: Diagnosed and repaired an intermittent partial power failure problem. My lights would go off suddenly in one part of the house for no reason. They diagnosed the problem as an over load on one of the circuits and replaced some switches in the breaker box. So far so good.

great! Alec(x?) came to give me a free estimate, and recommended a course of action that was the least invasive, which I really appreciated. Also, it was less costly. He was prompt and professional. After I purchased the supplies, they were able to come a few days later. It was a 2 day job, performed by Jeremy and an assistant..ran into a bit of a problem with having the wrong parts, but I contacted them once the correct pat had arrived and they were able to finish the job a few days later. lighting looks great, couldn't be happier! The only complaint I have has nothing to do with Hyman Electric, rather the lighting supply company they referred me to- Maurice Electric. i would not recommend them nor will I use them in the future. The man who sold me the supplies, Jan Broulik, was virtually impossible to reach, obviously swamped at work, and had an off-putting and very condescending manner. Had the selection been impressive, I might have overlooked that, but it's pretty boring stuff. I am happy with the lighting in my apartment, but that has more to do with the installation than the product, which is nothing fancy. (I got my 2 awesome Hunter ceiling/light fans at Lowes)
Description of Work: installed track lighting, replaced kitchen lighting, installed ceiling fans w/lights in both bedrooms

LOVE THEM! Extremely knowledgable and professional. Took time to explain things in any way that other electricians wouldn't take the time to do. Found and fixed problems missed by other electricians -- including big problems (like the newly installed (by another company) air conditioner not being grounded and little things that made a huge difference (like the circuit box labeling saying things like "lights and plugs" on a bunch of circuits instead of indentifying the rooms). If you have a old house, this is definitely the electician for you!
Description of Work: Trouble-shooted wiring/electric service in 1940s house. Installed whole house surge protector. Grounded air conditioner. Fixed troublesome light. Installed new bathroom fixtures. Replaced faulty switches and outlets. Installed new GFI outlet. Indentifed/fix potential circuit breaker problems.

"Prompt, courteous and knowledgeable" describe our experience with Hyman Electrical Company. The repairman returned our early morning call, and called 30 minutes prior to arrival to find the cause for a tripped circuit breaker. Quick, friendly, tidy and professional. Thank you!

We had a great experience. William Hyman himself made time for a free estimate, which included an Angie's list discount, and then sent out two excellent technicians. What was supposed to take one day instead took three, and the technicians were pleasant, honest, responsive, and provided effective troubleshooting. Would absolutely use them again and they have my highest recommendation.
Description of Work: Did a HUGE job in preparation for us to move into a new home: replaced our electrical box (heavy up), rewired a variety of lights and switches to make the wiring in an older home make sense, created light switches for rooms where they did not previously exist, made jacuzzi tub on its own grounded circuit (it previously was not and we wanted to bring it up to code), installed a whole-house surge protector.

I had given Hyman Electric a list of five items to address before the serivce call, but that list quickly expanded once Alex arrived and I remembered additional items/problems that needed addressing. Alex was very flexible and happy to have items added to a lengthy "to do" list. He was very good at explaining and helping me to weigh the pros and cons of various fixes for the problems we had, and spent a considerable amount of time trouble-shooting one problem outlet. His pricing was very straight forward, and he was very willing to discuss the cost implications of various decisions (for example, suggesting that I could buy my own flood light from Home Depot, rather than buying one from him). I thought that he really heard and responded what I was asking for, instead of pushing his preferred fix or solution. Alex has a pleasant and professional manner and was very easy to have around the house for the half-day he spent getting the work done. I would definitely use Hyman Electric again.
Description of Work: Replaced 3 switches (@$35 each), figured out why an outside flood light wasn't working and replaced an outdoor GFI outlet (@$125), replaced a second outdoor GFI outlet (@$125), replaced another outdoor flood light with a new fixture, with motion sensor (@$275), installed a new indoor outlet on an existing circuit (@$95), removed a broken light bulb from a socket in the attic (not itemized on the bill). Service charge was $75.

The electrician was extremely informative, he explained the situation and the cost estimate. He was also friendly and professional, both important especially for a stay-at-home mom. He tested the electrical wiring and then installed the Ikea hardware and fixture, but the Ikea hardware didn't work. So I asked if we could try the old hardware with the new fixture and he did, and it worked. He also asked if we needed anything else fixed before he left. We would definitely use this company again.

The electricians from WGH were waiting for me when I arrived at my friend's home, having called me earlier to say they were en route. They immediately assessed the situation, made suggestions, and quoted me a price for the work. They were knowledgeable, efficient, and neat. The two new outlets look like they have always been there! They cleaned up after they had finished their amazing (to me) work. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: In preparing a ground-floor room for the return of the homeowner after five months, I called WGH to install an additional electrical outlet. Because a hospital bed will be delivered prior to the owner's return, I indicated the outlet to be used for the bed and where I wanted the additional outlet installed on an adjoining wall. The WGH electrician, Jeremy, explained to me why a dedicated outlet for the bed was important because of the higher amps it requires. I agreed to have the additional work done.

WGH's prompt initial response helped us to discover a potentially dangerous situation. When we called back to schedule the electrical upgrade, WGH answered our numerous questions and quickly scheduled a day to upgrade our service. Everything went exactly as they had explained over the phone. Although others have given WGH lower marks on price, we obtained other estimates for the service upgrade, and WGH's quote was in line with other estimates that we received.
Description of Work: After losing power to only a portion of our house (without any thrown breakers), PEPCO advised us to have an electrician come out to examine our system. When we called WGH, they grasped the severity of our unusal problem and dispatched someone to our house immediately, whereupon we were advised that our electrical meter was arcing dangerously and that the line leading from the meter to the indoor service panel was degraded and improperly installed by a previous owner. PEPCO and WGH implemented a temporary fix, and we subsequently retained WGH to upgrade our electrical service.

I got information through my home inspector that we had a Federal Pacific circuit breaker panel - a panel known to cause fires due to faulty breakers. Also, my service cable was frayed all the way through. I contacted Hyman Electrical through email. They were very quick to email and call me. We set up an appointment and I met Jeremy, a certified electrician. He was very professional and insisted in laying down a tarp to protect my carpet, even though I told him we were having the carpet ripped out. He gave me a very precise estimate and explanation of what work would be completed. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the estimate was 1k-1.5k less than what I was expecting to have to pay. We scheduled an appointment to have the work completed. Jeremy showed up with another gentleman who completed the work. After it was completed, Jeremy walked me through the installation and explained what follow-on steps were involved with the inspection and Pepco. Any questions I had were answered completely. I am very pleased with the work and the professionalism. I will definitely be using Hyman Electrical for any other electrical jobs I have. A+
Description of Work: Upgrade to 200 amp from 100 amp to include: New circuit breaker panel, reconnecting circuits onto new breakers, label breakers, new service cable, new ground rod and bond service, new Pepco meter socket, install new mounting board, DC electrical permit, coordination of inspection, and installation of surge protector.

Amazingly, they were able to come several hours from the time I called. They worked within the time frame that I was available (which has never happened when I have called a service provider). They called in advance, arrived early, waited for me to arrive, took care of my needs, gave me sound advice about several other matters, charged me the price that had been quoted over the phone, cleaned up the area they worked on, and called afterwards to make sure I was satisfied with the work that was performed. A+ work, professionalism, and attitude.

Alec called ahead and showed up as agreed. He assessed the work involved, gave me the estimate, and then performed the work as described above. It was a pleasure to deal with Hyman Electrical.
Description of Work: An outlet box on an exterior wall had come away so upon reading Angie's List recommendations, I called Hyman Electrical to have it repaired. Alec came and installed a box extender and secured the outlet to the baseboard. I had some concerns about another box on the same wall, and Alec secured that one, too.

Excellent experience. Called me the day of the appointment to confirm and showed up on time. The electrician, Byron, gave me a quote on the work to be done and also noted some other code violations that I could have fixed at my discretion - I had them fixed. Byron also offered as a courtesy to open the electrical panel and check that all the breakers were appropriate. He discovered a 20 amp breaker on a 15 amp circuit, so I had him replace that too. His work was professional and clean. I had ideas about relocating the electrical panel upstairs in anticipation of a basement renovation, but Byron was candid and said I should not bother doing any major electrical work until after the renovation was complete as it could end up costing me much more to have rewire everything again. The price seemed a bit high for some of the work, but the quality and experience were great.
Description of Work: Placed live wires by the water main and hose bib into a junction box, fixed an outdoor light that had no switch, replaced GFCI outlets in kitchen and added one, replaced an inappropriate circuit breaker on the electrical panel.

From start to finish, I was delighted with the skill and professionalism of this company. I had used the Wm. G Hyman Electrical Company for a small job...about nine months earlier and had seen the excellent work of their electrician "Jeremy." The estimator did a good job of explaining what had to be done to update my house's electrical capabilities. He also said Hyman would supply the necessary Electrical Permit, which I would have to show to the PEPCO inspector who would come a few weeks later to inspect the job. The heavy up work was accomplished in one day, and was done by Jeremy and another electrician. Two other Hyman electricians worked on installing the smoke detectors and closet lights. I was particularly impressed by the care that all four of the electricians took in protecting my floors from dust and debris from the basement and the attic. They were all highly-skilled and really nice guys. After all the work was finished, Jeremy showed me the new electrical panel box, pointed out the labels identifying which breaker was connected to which room / appliance and showed me how to turn the breakers on and off. By the way, when the PEPCO inspector came two weeks later to look at the work, he complimented the Hyman work as extremely "neat." If you want electrical work done right, I would urge you to consider this company.
Description of Work: An outstanding job - in my opinion they're the the best electrical company in the DC area. They did a "heavy up" - which means updating the electrical system of my 1947 house so it can handle all the appliances, computers, tvs, etc. The work included: intall a new electrical 200 amp. service panel, with new service entrance cable and Pepco approved meter socket. Reconnect existing circuits and label electrical breakers. Update the grounding to code. Provide and install 5 new smoke detectors. Provide and install 2 new closet lights (It's heaven to be able to see what's inside those closets!)

Professional, prompt, outstanding job. As he tackled the tasks, he came across other issues related to age and code. He'd point them out giving options and ideas, never came close to a "hard sell" approach. Will use again for anything electrical.
Description of Work: Job was to fix several electrical wiring issues on a 1917 home that had seen two major upgrdes and I'm sure several handymen/do it yourselfers playing with the wiring. To say the least, this was a challenge. As he tackled the tasks, he came across other issues related to age and code. Wonderful! We got estimates from 3 companies that had high Angie's List ratings, but chose this one because they showed a lot of thoughtfulness when meeting us for an estimate. They opened up our subpanel and panel, noted that the plaster ceilings may need special consideration to minimize damage, suggested GFCIs for the bathrooms and kitchen, and thought of a smart solution for exhausting from the downstairs bathroom without damaging the brick on the outside of the house. They weren't the lowest-priced estimate, but we were glad to pay a little more with the confidence they gave us. They had planned to arrive a few days later, but called when the schedule opened up, and we were thrilled that they were able to get started earlier on the work. Almost the entire company arrived at our house, and instead of taking 2 days, they were able to finish in 1 day. Everyone was so cheerful and professional, and they even let me take pictures of their work to show my husband and for our records. They even fixed a broken light in our crawlspace, which we didn't find out about until weeks later! The night after the work was completed, we noticed that our kitchen light wasn't working, and they came back first thing the next morning and fixed it. We were so happy with their professionalism and quality of work, we would recommend them to all our friends and family as well as ask them back for future electrical work.
Description of Work: Correct sub-panel wiring, including separating grounds from neutrals, tightening terminals, and eliminating tandem breaker code violation. Install 2 bathroom exhaust fans and ducts. Install 7 GFCIs in bathrooms and kitchen, install a whole-house surge protector, remove abandoned wires, install another outlet in our home office.

I can see why this company gets so many rave reviews. They work well with the owner, explaining carefully the pro's and con's of proposed changes. A two person team, of Allen and Bryan, stayed with job from start to finish. One of them, Allen, even successfully troubleshot a loose connection on my electrically-controlled "hospital bed".
Description of Work: They repaired an outage in the master bedroom and showed me how overloaded the circuit was. My home is over 70 years old, and the circuitry had never been upgraded to serve all the current appliances. They installed two new circuits, primarily to serve air conditioners, and then upgraded 13 electrical outlets to bring the house up to DC Code. They also installed several smoke detectors.

We were very happy with the service provided. They arrived on time, knew exactly what was to be done and explained how everything would be done. It took approximately 1 1/2 days to complete everything. Everything was done to a high standard and we were very happy to have outside outlets over the holiday period. We were not orginally planning on having the power-up but when they explained the costs of having the panel replaced, there was very little difference in cost so have the extra capacity is good. We will be using Hyman again.

The service technician arrived punctually, and was very professional and courteous. He updated all of the outlets in the home, installed 2 GFCI outlets in the kitchen, replaced regular outlets on the floor with special floor outlets, replaced light switches, junction boxes, and eliminated an exposed wire in our kitchen. He performed a lot of maintenance work, and was willing to handle any issue that I could think of while he was there at the house. He even stayed later than he was scheduled to, just so he could be sure to complete everything that I wanted him to while he was there. I highly recommend this company.

The estimator did a really good job. He came by and gave me straight forward answers. He then called in the work that needed to be done and was wrote down the estimates for my job right then and there. I decided not to use them because I have other work that needs to be done and I needed someone familiar with plumbing as well. I thought the price was reasonable and the services were clearly outlined.
Description of Work: I asked Hyman to come out and give me an estimate on electrical work needed to be done to the kitchen. All went very well. They had a good communicator in the office who received my initial call and asked good questions. Scheduling was prompt. I received a "confirmation" call the day before and another one an hour before the technician arrived. The tech.'s name was Allan and he was terrific in every way - very thorough, polite, direct, neat work habits, skillful, good diagnostician, very fast and good english skills. I was very pleased that he took the time to really understand all the factors involved with the problem that I had.

A knowledgeable office manager answered my phone call -- He was very nice and, asked a few questions about the house before sending anyone out. Alan was the one who came to the house. He was really nice, professional and punctual. He worked with us to determine the best locations for the new outlet boxes. Again, the previous handymen/owners had done a poor job, so I really appreciated the thought that Alan put into finding the right placement, one that solved the immediate problem but that also would work for any future additions to our house. It just showed they cared. The electricians who completed the job were also really nice, very professional and on time. From the top down, everyone seemed to take pride in their craft. I love that. We have some other projects coming up and we'll definitely be calling them back. It'll also be a pleasure to recommend them to friends or anyone else who needs an electrician.
Description of Work: We needed a heavy-up for our row house, a new breaker box and remedy some clumsy work done by the previous handymen/owners, Install some new wiring for outlets. Contact/responsiveness with both the office and electrician was excellent. The electrician arrived promptly and immediately confirmed the price estimated to me by the office of the work per outlet. He then informed me that three outlets in the kitchen would cost more than double the original estimate since code required breakers. He said he would be unable to use our original stainless faceplates and was unable to get stainless replacements. He suggested I purchase replacements myself. I asked him to skip these and move on to the remaining six outlets. He informed me that my original plates were oversize and that his replacements would not cover the same area. I asked him if he had any oversize plates with him. He did not. I asked him to do the work, replace the plates, and to return the originals to me. He said my suggestion that he carry several sizes was a good one that he would pass on to his supervisors. The work took about two hours. The outlets are now tight, even, and flush with the plate. However, three of the outlets now show pre-existing holes around the smaller plates and will require some patchwork. All of the outlets will require painting. The electrician mentioned having wiring/mounting difficulties with each outlet. He said it probably wouldn't be worth it to change out the smaller plates for larger ones at that point. Older homes apparently have larger holes and crumbling plaster in these areas and he mentioned several times that it is what it is. The invoice reflected a $75 service charge not originally quoted to me in the estimate. The office waived the charge. I probably will not reinstall the original plates for fear of loosening/damaging good work and will just patch and paint myself.
Description of Work: Replace nine (9) outlets; converting two prong to three prong, replacing faceplate hardware.

Excellent. I called Hyman the day before Christmas with a power outage. The dispatcher tried to help me reset the breaker over the phone which I could not do. They were booked up but were working nearby and would send an electrician over to check it out. The electrician Jeremy called and came by after noon and had us up and working quickly. While tracing the circuit which goes through many areas of the house, he found that a wire had burnt behind an remote outlet from where I plug in an electric heater. I am lucky because this could have started a fire. There electrician Jeremy is a true professional and expert troubleshooter. He put down drop cloths to protect my floor and cleaned up where he had to open the various outlets. He also offered to check the smoke detectors before he left. I will be calling them back to install additional circuits and update my smoke detectors after the holidays.
