Over the weekend, half of the house started having problems with electricity. We called first thing on Monday morning, and Alec (an experienced electrician) came out right away (at 8:30 that same morning). He asked us several questions about the symptoms we were seeing, and then gave us a thorough explanation of what he planned to do to try to figure out the problem, as well as an explanation of the fees that we would incur (only $75 for the initial diagnosis). He proceeded to locate the source of the problem (a partially failed main breaker on the electrical panel) and made recommendations (replace the panel because the part was so old that it really wasn't practical to try to find a replacement). His explanations were complete, professional, and he answered questions with great patience. We agreed to have the service performed, and it was scheduled for the next day. Before he left, he moved the breaker for the furnace to the half of the electrical panel that was still working so that we would have heat, which was very considerate and we really appreciated. Today, an electrician and his helper showed up on time to perform the replacement. They were very careful to protect our floors from anything that they might track in from outside, and got to work right away. The replacement went very smoothly, and they did an outstanding job of labeling the new panel! It's the most thorough set of labels I've ever seen on an electrical panel. The power in the house is completely stable, and the panel itself was very carefully installed--flush with the wall, and very, very neat. Truly excellent workmanship. We couldn't be happier with their work, and I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone who needs electrical work done. STELLAR! So glad that Angie's List helped me find them.

Called at around noon and asked for someone to come out and troubleshoot a minor electrical problem in the house. Al called back and offered to walk us through troubleshooting rather than coming out and charging a fee for taking a look in case it was minor. He was very patient and very nice. I would definitely call back for all future needs.

My home is ready for the 21st century thanks to Hyman Electric. Our home is 50 years old and we wanted to add new circuits but our old electrical panel couldn't handle it. Plus it turns out the electrical cable running down to my meter was starting to split. The electricians came and installed a new panel and a new supply cable on the side of my home in a day. They worked hard and were very friendly. I appreciated their work ethic. Towards the end, they couldn't identify one circuit and spent 45 minutes locating which they didn't have to do. Highly recommended.

Two electricians arrived within the estimated time window. They introduced themselves and followed me to the location of the circuit box. I was on a call for work and they were very mindful of my presence, keeping their voices down. They removed the panel cover, identified the problem, explained it and fixed it immiediately. They provided a detailed invoice, as well as some additional information on general questions that we had. They were very friendly, polite, adept and timely - could not ask for more!!

We were having electrical issues -- flickering lights -- at out home. The owner sent her repair person out who quickly realized he was out of his league, but identified the problem and cut the power for safety reasons. He told the owner to get her electrician in ASAP. He came the next day, but sixteen hours later with no resolution and I began to wonder if the owner's electrician was up to the job. I started calling around for potential providers of emergency service and to get a verbal assessment. I called Hyman Contractors and spoke with the business' namesake, Bill. He was very polite as I frantically described the situation, and was clear that he would not be able to perform the work until Monday, if needed. He was very willing to answer questions that I had, stressed the gravity of the situation and need for a response, and was all around amenable. He said he'd call back on Monday to check in, which he did.

Since the tropical storm in September, my lights had flickered regularly. Pepco told me they could not find a problem. In Nov, I came home to half the house being dark. Pepco was called but problem was gone by the time they got here at 1am. They did tightened something on pole and said the service cable looked fairly frayed and needed to be replaced. By morning the problem was back. Hyman Electric was out that afternoon to take a look and give estimate. Alex tested and saw that power was only coming in of 1 of the lines, since the problem was back. Cable was installed by Hyman. I still had problems but problem had switched sides in the house. After another 2 weeks of calling Pepco, they finally managed to see that I had only had power coming in one line for themselves. As Hyman had said on day 1, there was a problem on the pole. Hyman gave me moral support and talked to Pepco, even though they had done their job.
Description of Work: Replaced the service cable with 150 amp rated cable from mast to meter, from meter to into existing 150 amp panel. Update grounding - install 1 ground rod and band water service.

To ring in the new year, I contacted Hyman for a second opinion to a quote I had gotten before Christmas. I am so glad I did! First off, the office was able to accommodate me quickly and found a perfect time for a service call. Second, the electrician (Alan) arrived on time and in good spirits (spending a ton of money unexpectedly is at least a little easier when the guy you're paying is easy to talk to). Third, I had assumed that this would be just a visit to perform an estimate. However, Alan assured me that they would never leave a customer high-and-dry with no power, and after figuring out the problem, set to work fixing it. Hooray! No more extension cords and flashlights! So Alan checked the breaker box, fuse box, and blown wire, gave me an opinion on what he thought was wrong and a quote to fix it. After I ok'd the amount, he went to work. Soon he realized that the problem was more involved and called the office for an opinion. He came back with a second, higher quote and set about fixing it after I ok'd the new amount. He ended up rewiring a feed from a bedroom to the bathroom, rewiring the fuse box so it no longer requires fuses (the breaker box will trip if there is a problem so there is no need for the box any more), replacing the old bathroom outlet with a GFCI outlet, and correcting the setup of the breaker box (some of the breakers were installed incorrectly). Alan took care to cause as little damage to the walls as possible, and cleaned up the mess afterward. The whole visit took about 5 hours from arrival to completion.
Description of Work: On Thanksgiving Day I was working in my attic replacing some insulation. I brushed up against a wire and the metal tube hissed, popped, sparked, and generally freaked me out. After high-tailing it out of my attic, I discovered that the lights and power outlets on the top floor of my house no longer worked. Great.

The electrician called 30 min. prior to appointment time to inform me that he was in route. Upon arrival he quickly assessed the job and commenced to install the fixture. The experience was awesome and seamless! I am so thankful that I found this company! They are not listed in my area, but they were willing to come look at my electrical needs and break down the process into phases. It took us a while to get the work done because it rained on the first scheduled date and I was not able to get off work until a month later. They were flexible with my schedule. I have hired a dozen contractors in the last year and a half, all through Angie's List (chimney work, fence replacement, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), and Hyman Electric has been the easiest one to deal with. I am pretty picky about the work being done correctly and to code, and the other contractors Ive hired, I have had to ask them all to come back to fix their work because it was not done right the first time. Not so with Hyman Electric!!! The inspector came out today and passed it within minutes of inspecting their work. They were very thorough when looking at the old knob and tube wiring in my house. They took time to examine each outlet to see how the whole house was wired together. Other companies have come in and thrown out a number for how much a panel upgrade and whole house rewire will cost, but those numbers were never based on a thorough inspection like what Hyman Electric did. For this phase, they upgraded the panel box (heavy up). This will now allow them to rewire each room to a new circuit. My old panel box was full and I did not have room to add in anything else or separate out each room. I currently have 2-3 rooms on some circuits which explains why I often trip the circuit when using a blowdryer or the microwave! I never knew that the kitchen, bathroom, and master bedroom were all on one circuit! Byron and Alan were very kind and diligent with their work. I love learning about the more complicated parts of renovating a home, so I end up watching the contractors every step of the way. Alan was very nice and explained to me everything that he was doing and why. In terms of the price, they may be on the higher end, but the panel upgrade was comparable to another company's Angie's List Big Deal price. Again, I am so thankful that I found this contractor through a Google Search (as they specialize in old homes), and I hope that I have a similar positive experience with them when it comes time to rewire the rest of the house. Thank you, Hyman Electric! You guys were great!

We had been recommended to William G. Hyman Electric from friends who had been using them for many years, We also found them on Angie's List. Not surprising that they have so many satisfied customers in Washington DC as they are the only electricians who were willing to work on our 100 year old house without causing excessive damage to the walls and ceilings. We found everyone who we had contact with to be knowledgeable, caring and friendly. We had other service people in our home over the many years but our experience with Hyman Electric was by far the best. They took the extra effort to protect our floors they also cleaned up there debris as they moved from room to room. I am very picky and appreciate there attention to detail. We are glad the we found an electrician the we can count on and I would not hesitate to recommend them to friends and family in need of professional electrical work.
Description of Work: We had William G. Hyman Electric upgrade our electrical service, install new heavy duty circuits including rewiring of our air conditioning system, installation of a ceiling fan, replace existing outlets and install new cable/internet multi room wiring system. We also had them solve some nuisance switching problem caused by the last person who we hired to work on our system.

EVERYTHING IN THIS REPORT IS A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD (case # 0601003373 in District Court of Md, William G Hyman Defendant--not plaintiff) AND HAS BEEN PROVEN IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF MARYLAND in a FAIR AND IMPARTIAL TRIAL. ( The judge did not give the customary immediate ruling, rather she took time to review all the evidence before making her ruling.) I TOOK HYMAN TO COURT AND JUDGE PATRICIA MITCHELL UPHELD THAT THERE WAS NEVER A CONTRACT and AWARDED ME A JUDGEMENT AGAINST Mr Hyman. I AM OUT OF POCKET OVER $10,000 TO PROVE MR HYMAN'S DISHONESTY AND FORGERY OF SUPPOSED CONTRACT. MR HYMAN IS "JUDGEMENT PROOF" COURTESY OF MOVING/HIDING HIS ASSETS TO AVOID PAYMENT OF HIS DEBTS. On 9/29/11, Mr Hyman appealed the judges finding, ant this entitles him to a totally new trial. Mr Hyman CANNOT WIN ON MERIT, but he can (and has) OUTSPENT ME, THEREBY OUTSPENDING JUSTICE. Since I am thus far unable to come up with the $10,000 attorney fees for a new trial, I will have to dismiss my case, knowing that IN THE ONLY TRIAL (FAIR AND IMPARTIAL) I WAS GRANTED A JUDGEMENT AGAINST MR. HYMAN ON THE BASIS OF MERIT AND EVIDENCE. Because I cannot afford to pay for Mr Hyman's "Do-Over trial", he will appear to have never had a trial or judgement against him. BUYER BEWARE!!!! On April 9, Mr Hyman met with me to provide the free estimate he advertised. He told me that in order to get onto his schedule, I had to give him my Discover credit card information. He told me I did not have to pay that way, as I did not want to pay that way. However, on April 9, (unauthorized and unknown to me) he had already billed my card for $1500.00 without authorization. We were supposed to finalize a contract at my home on April 14, 2010. I had a lockbox on my home. On April 13, he came to my vacant house with no notice to me. Mr Hyman had two phone numbers and my email, but chose not to let me know he/his agents were in my home without my knowlege or authorization. He never contact me and I did not know he had been there until I called him that evening. He never had an explanation for why he did this, but he said he would make it all right. That was the last I heard from him despite numerous calls. He did not respond to my registered letter. He forged my name on the free estimate he provided and pretended that it was a contract, when there was no contract. I spent a total of less than 15 minutes with this person. In that 15 minutes, He told me this was to reserve a place on his schedule, that I did not have to pay that way. He gave my credit card company a forgery of my signature, pretending there had been a contract. He did things I specifically told him I did not want – knocked holes in my exterior walls in the wrong locations. When I got home, I called him and he told me he would make this right and wouldn’t charge me for things he wasn’t supposed to do. He billed me again without my authorization, after I mailed him a registered (complaint) letter--to which he never responded. I was left without power in my basement, and was unable to reach him. I had to spend $800 to restore the power/fix his screw-up. He billed me for every item on the free estimate. We went to court. This has cost me over $10,000; everything is out of my pocket. More than the money, this is a moral issue. He had access to all my of my personal information without me being there, without my knowledge. Not only did he come to my home without letting me know, he billed my card when he was specifically informed not do so. I want it to be known that if he has access to your home, he will take advantage of it. I am a single woman, and I believe he has done this before. He knew how difficult it would be to prove my word against his. I had to hire a Forensic Document Examiner to prove the signature Mr Hyman said was a contract, was "not genuine". I did pay him for what I might have authorized had I had the chance. I always pay what I owe. However, it's unbelievable that HE would decide for me what I would buy and how I would pay for it. I was granted a legal judgment against him. I have the trial transcripts and can prove he perjured himself in court--just as he has lied in his "company response". EVERY WORD IN MY REPORT IS A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD, IN THE JUDGEMENT GRANTED ME BY JUDGE PATRICIA MITCHELL ON AUGUST 29, 2011, WHEN I TOOK HYMAN ELECTRICAL TO DISTRICT COURT IN THE CITY OF ROCKVILLE. I MET WITH MR HYMAN FOR ONLY 15 MINUTES TOTAL. SINCE MY HOME WAS ACCESSED WITHOUT MY KNOWLEGE OR PERMISSION A DAY BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT, THEREFORE ALLOWING WHOEVER WAS IN MY HOME FULL UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO ALL MY PERSONAL/FINANCIAL/SOCIAL SECURITY INFORMATION, I HAVE NO IDEA EXACTLY WHO HAS MY PRIVATE PERSONAL INFORMATION. MR HYMAN HAS HAD THE FULL USE OF MY MONEY SINCE APRIL 2010, AND REFUSES TO PAY WHAT HE OWES ME IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE JUDGEMENT AGAINST HIM. I CAN ONLY PROVE THAT MR HYMAN HIMSELF IS DISHONEST AND UNTRUSTWORTHY IN THE EXTREME--AND THE STATES ATTORNEY'S OFFICE AGREES. BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE!
Description of Work: On April 9, 2010, he came to my home to give me a free estimate. He came highly recommended to me, and I was appalled at what he ended up doing to me.

Excellent job. Company called the day before to confirm appointment and the morning of the appointment to tell me the electrician was on his way. The electrician was on time, knew what he was doing, gave good advice (especially about the difficulty of installing a closet light), did exactly what I needed and wanted, made a minimum of mess and cleaned everything up. Electrician put down plastic to protect the floor and put on plastic shoe covers while in the apartment. I will certainly call this company again if I need more electrical work. I joined Angie's list specifically to find an electrician; this experience confirmed the wisdom of that decision.
Description of Work: Replaced a non-functioning outlet Added two outlets (i.e., moved the line from two outlets up so that I could more easily reach an outlet; maintained connection to the lower outlet). This required sawing through plywood and plaster.

They were very quick to respond when I first called and gave me a detailed estimate. They arrived on time for the work and completed the work quickly and properly. They consulted with me on what I wanted and made sure I was happy before they left. It was a great experience from start to finish. They cleaned up after themselves so the room was spotless when they left. Because they encountered less problem in the walls and ceiling running the wires to where we wanted the ceiling fan installed, they gave me a substantial discount off of the estimate I had received.

Customer service was wonderful, everyone was very polite and answered all my questions quickly. Initially I was a little disappointed because they weren't able to schedule an appointment for about 10 days but they called back the next day because they had a cancellation and were able to fit me in the next day. I work shift work so I was impressed that the owner remember I would be off that day and called me first. The service man arrived right on time and identified himself immediately. Again, very polite and professional. Even layed down a mat at the front door before he even walked in. We walked through the house and I pointed out all the things I wanted done. With each item he identified the individual cost and told me what unexpected costs could arise, right off the bat. As usual, the list grew once he arrived as I thought of more things I wanted done that I hadn't previously mentioned but the electrician was very patient and went through each project. He gave me an estimate before any work was started and was not pushy about completing some or all the items. He proposed options for outlet installation including piggybacking the power off the light switch itself but explained that while that would save money, he wouldn't recommend it because it could cause a short out. I appreciated him explaining both options, I have ZERO electrical experience, and it made me feel like I wasn't getting bowled over by someone using technical terms. After we identified all the work that would be done, the electrician called back to the company and had someone else come out to help him because he "didn't want to waste my day with electrical work" which I appreciated. The other employee was just as nice and they got right to work. I had to run an errand while they were at the house and they both kept an eye on my dogs for me while they were working. They even asked permission to take a lunch break because it would delay their completion time! And when I say lunch break, they ate for 20 minutes in their car. Overall I felt that they both respected the amount of time that it was taking out of my day and did everything they could to get it all done as quickly as possible. They did a great job of protecting my hardwood floors, which are 50 years old, and cleaned up after themselves along the way. I just moved into the house so they even climbed over boxes and misplaced furniture to get all the work done! During the visit they identified some other electrical options that I might want to consider including replacing some older outlets and the whole house surge protector. They weren't pushy about any of the suggestions and identified the price right up front. When I told them I wanted to change out the outlets myself (to make them match cosmetically) but I didn't know how, they explained the process, gave me a few tips and of course said if I got stuck, they'd be happy to come out and replace them at a later date. Overall the project took about 3 hours and cost $900. I'm new to the DC area so I'm not sure if that was an acceptable price but it did seem a little bit steep. However with electricity, I'd rather pay a little more and know it's done right than have a problem down the road. They did discount my whole house surge protector and waived the $75 service fee because they did so much work for me. They accept both checks and credit but did mention the prefer checks, assuming to avoid the service charge on a smaller company. After they left I noticed they left a box of outlet covers in my study so I called the company to let them know but no one called back. One downside is their answering machine seems a little bit quirky, so I'm not sure they even got the message. Best advice would be to call during business hours, just to be safe. I would use this company again in the future.

The company answered the phone promptly and gave me a quote. They called a half hour before they arrived. They solved the problem quickly. They did it without switching off the power to the outlet. They wore those slippers over their shoes in the apartment.
Description of Work: Replaced GCFI outlet.

We were very happy with the service provided. They arrived on time, knew exactly what had to be done and explained exactly what they would do. Everything was done to a high standard and very happy to have them fix our electrical problems. We were not originally planning on replacing our old breaker box or having the electrical service upgraded but there was very little difference in cost and to have the extra capacity is better in the long run. We are fortunate to have found Hyman Electric through Angie's list and highly recommend them to anyone needing quality electrical work.

Thank you for your wonderful review. It is among the best accolades we’ve received recently. We are always pleased when our customers are happy with our work and take the time and effort to recommend us. Today it seems that with everyone so worried about there finances, many do not want to hear the proper recommendation to truly rectify a situation, which often results in them wanting to shoot the messenger. Our technicians are expert troubleshooters and are only interested in finding the root cause of a problem and proposing a lasting solution.

I asked for an estimate. A gentleman called Bill returned my call almost immediately, which was appreciated. However, I had previously asked for an estimate on some unrelated miscellaneous work. The price quoted was very high, and so I had decided to hold off on that work and had not asked them to undertake the service. On learning of this, the gentleman I spoke to became downright hostile and rude, and made it very clear that he was frustrated that I had not undertaken the work last time, and was not interested in quoting again.

We were happy to provide an estimate for your first project, the "unrelated miscellaneous work." However, we declined to bid on your second project because it involved completing an electrical installation that had been abandoned by another electrician you decided to hire. Your request was that we base our new estimate on a partially completed project--raising both safety and liability issues. Quite frankly, we were not rude but firm and very clear that we had no interest in finishing up the abandoned work. Electrical work must be done correctly every step of the way to ensure adequate protection for workers and the homeowners who will use the installation. We would not bid on completing a job that we could not guarantee for quality and safety.
