They both went well. the water heater took about 4 hours. It seems to be working fine although it has not yet been inspected by WSSC. Snaking out the sink and basement drain took about an hour. Although he attempted to clean up (messy job) I still had to clean the floor after he left.
Description of Work: They did two things. First was a routine replacement of a water heater. That was about $1700. Second was a trouble call, only a few days later, for a stopped up sink plus snaking out a basement drain. Those two came to about $500.

Great. The Clark technician: -- arrived exactly on time. -- quickly diagnosed the problems. -- clearly explained alternative solutions to problems and respective costs. -- very efficiently replaced the parts. -- left work areas neat and orderly. Will definitely use Clark again, and will request this technician ( Efren). He was very knowledgeable, professional, pleasant and helpful.

I called first thing in the morning after discovering that our garbage disposal was broken and they were able to schedule an appointment that afternoon. The workman arrived on time and was extremely professional and courteous. The work appears to have been done very well and everything is working fine now. I thought that the price was a little steep (a $20 discount for Angie's List members) helped, but perhaps this is just the standard in the industry for this kind of work. Regardless, I was delighted to have the problem fixed so quickly and professionally. I do recommend purchasing your own disposal (we got ours at a local Ace Hardware) to have installed which does significantly lower the overall cost of such a job.
Description of Work: Installed a new garbage disposal (which I provided) and snake out clogged drain.

Did not care for technician's demeanor. I live alone and depend on having workers in my home that I am comfortable with. This guy did not learn my name, did not offer his, and was fairly abrupt. Explained his diagnosis in a way that I could understand. But I'm getting other estimates. This one seemed high. And I want this problem fixed by someone I can feel OK about having in my home.

We were very pleased with the work. The crew was on time, courteous, left the house clean, and finished about half a day earlier than estimated. When one of the indoor units was rattling after installation, they came right out to fix the problem.

The plumber was thorough, took time to explain everything in detail, and he was careful, clean and neat. I can only offer superlatives all around, and I'm 110% satisfied. I also hope his supervisor knows how well the employee represents his firm. He was a nice, professional young man.

Thomas E Clark is and will remain my go-to and first to call for A/C, plumbing and heating issues. This is the second time I have called them on short notice in the last 6 months and they delivered superbly both times. This call was because our A/C went out on a Friday night in June hot weather with two newborns in the house. They responded promptly and sent a very professional and competent technician out who was able to immediately detect that the capacitor was bad. He replaced it quickly and explained everything he was doing to my husband- didn't try to mask anything in mystery or vagueness. We did have to pay the weekend service fee, $104, but it was worth it. The capacitor part was normal price, minus $20 for Angie's List members. The first time I called was because our hot water heater started leaking suddenly. They sent someone right away and did a great job.
Description of Work: Emergency call on a Saturday to fix the A/C in 96 degree weather- replaced the capacitor.

I have a contract with a home-warranty company who asked me to pickup a contractor, because they did not have any affiliated contractor who would install the tank less water heater. I used Angie's List to pick up Thomas E Clark as my contractor. They were prompt in response, and they even went further and defended their reputation when contacted by the warranty company and refused to install but the best water heaters in the market. They even upgraded the gas line feeder to my water heater because the old one was not feeding enough gas. Thank you Thomas E Clark Muneer Abbas

This is kind of a difficult review. I called this company because they were highly rated on Angie's List. If I had not discovered something then I would had raved about them because Edwin, the technician was very nice and professional. BUT, looks can be deceiving as they say. My pilot light went out to my hot water heater and Edwind came out. I couldn't re-light it myself because the igniter button was broken and that would have required me to do it manually which I was not comfortable doing. Edwind took a look and explained that this part is not available anymore and that i would have to buy a new hot water heater. He did call around to see if he could locate one but to no avail. So I am surprised but go along with his comments and let him know that I would like an estimate of a new hot water heater from his company when he returns to the office. I had agreed because it is 8 years old and thought it might be time to replace it any way. So he went ahead and lit it manually and went on his way. They charged $168 dollars to do this, including $69 for a service call. Expensive but acceptable. After he left, I checked the internet and found the exact same igniter switch that he said was not available! I found it in 1 minute on the internet. It cost $5.95!! They were going to have me replace my whole system because "this part is not available anymore" for a part that cost less than 6 dollars. Unbelievable! Very upsetting that this company with its reputation on the line would stoop this low to make a few bucks. I have still not heard back from them after I sent them a message saying I found the part. They said they would send me an estimate and they have not yet. So be warned if you contact them. I am sure that there will be some sort of rebuttal, but how they can get out of this one remains to be seen.

I do not understand why this company would receive such high ratings on Angie's List. Upon completion of an annual boiler inspection in October, I was told that neither the boiler nor the hot water heater were drafting properly--both were tagged and the technician said there was a danger of carbon monoxide leaking into my home. This same company had installed the hot water heater less than a year before the inspection (February) but they only recommended some very costly remedies and I was told that the drafting issue was not noticed originally because the testing equipment had improved since that time. A photo taken of the flue showed sky, so an assumption was made by the technician that it was clear. After having the situation reviewed by various others, it became clear that the water heater venting had been installed improperly. While the owner showed concern and offered and did speak with my contractor to try to help resolve things, no effort was made to actually come and visually inspect the poor workmanship. In the end, I was able to have the venting successfully replaced and rerouted by another company. While I was pleased with some other plumbing work performed earlier by Thomas E. Clark, I would be very hesitant to trust them in my home again and am very disappointed that this kind of situation caused me so much time and aggravation. It is further complicated by the fact that the two divisions of the company do not seem to talk to each other--plumbing and heating require separate visits and charges. Perhaps it's just my bad luck, but I am perplexed by the outstanding rating since I have come to rely on Angie's List for work on my home.

It was easy to call them on the phone and get someone to work with us. They paid attention to the fact there was no heat in the house and they were responsive. The reps came when expected, and were well-qualified for the work that they did. And we are talking about Christmas Eve, when every other furnace repair place was closed. The day after Christmas they got the part and installed it. But, it appears that the company has quite a bit of overhead to operate as they do, because between the three trips by the techs, one for diagnosis, one to go to Baltimore to get the York furnace part ($120 on-line), and then one to install the part, the hourly fee in my estimate was somewhere between $100 and $150. So, in this instance the repair was a bit expensive. Yes, I will consider employing them again for annual maintenance and perhaps to replace the York furnace, which at this writing I will warn you against buying. The York furnace is only 5 years old, and replacing the gas control valve...which should last many more years than 5, is only one of several expensive parts that fail with York products. If you subscribe to Consumer Reports, you will see that York furnaces fail twice as often as other brands, such as Carrier or Bryant.
Description of Work: Our natural gas York furnace (age 5 years) quit working on December 24th. The company tech diagnosed a failed gas control valve. That is the valve that provides natural gas to the burners when it is time to ignite. The tech tried to make the valve work temporarily but the valve was toast. On December 26th they sent someone to Baltimore to pick up a replacement gas control valve and installed the valve that afternoon. The York furnace works, for now.

Scheduled an appointment with Thos E Clark on Monday for the next morning. In the middle of the time band when they were supposed to arrive, they called and asked if it was OK for them to come in the afternoon. I had already arranged my schedule around the appointment in the morning, but I wanted to water heater fixed, so I said sure. They apparently only had one plumber on staff who could service a tankless water heater. Then they called back again and asked what model my water heater was and decided to tell me at that point that on top of the $69 fee just for the plumber to drive to my house, there was a $175 "diagnostic" fee. This fee would not be put towards any repairs, it was on top of everything. If I had known that when I was originally scheduling I would not have scheduled with them. I find this outrageous. Diagnosing a problem should be part of a plumbing service, not a separate thing you pay for. I canceled the appointment so don't have any information about the quality of the work performed.

I had a stopped up outside drain at the bottom of a stairwell that leads to my basement. If water collects at the bottom of the stairwell it can easily overflow into the basement. Floods are a problem! We've used Thomas E. Clark for decades, so I called them. Their plumber showed up in a timely way, looked at the situation, wet-vacced out some standing water, used a taze plunger, ran some water and pronounced himself satisfied. That was a $300 charge for thirty minutes work. And no warranty on drain clearing. The problem repeated in about two weeks but by that time I'd made myself a taze plunger and did what the plumber had done and water started running again. Then the problem repeated this week. Taze plunging did no good. Long story short I called a different plumber who came out and correctly diagnosed the problem: a blocked sewer line. He pulled a toilet in the basement (an old house, there's no other access to the mains), ran a long, industrial strength snake, and at about 90-100 feet got the obstruction. He ran the snake an additional 20 feet just to be on the safe side. The snake head pulled out some kind of fabric that someone had flushed down a toilet, probably several years ago. The drains now work fine. What annoys me about Thomas E. Clark is that their plumber did not take the time to run water and flush toilets, and wait, to see whether it was a sewer line issue. The correct fix cost $366, for two guys working for about an hour and a half. It's quite clear to me which is the better deal. I'll never hire Thomas E. Clark again.

I recently had Thos. E Clark over for two separate jobs and on each occasion I was very happy with the whole job. Technicians called 30 minutes prior to arriving, at the time they were supposed to arrive. Each was professional and curteous. On the first job the person handling scheduling was able to rearrange schedules to get to me within a day. Had a cracked cast iron stack that was leaking a bit into the basement so it was very much appreciated. Gentlemen worked most of the day and did a really nice job to avoid trashing my walls and ceiling to access the pipe. Hasn't leaked since. Second job was to have a little duct work cleaned up on my HVAC unit and install a whole house humidfier. Again, technicians were great and were in and out in a couple hours. Neither left even a drop of evidence they were in the house. Would hire these guys again without batting an eyelash.

We had a backup sewer issue in our house. They came out to look at the issue. They said that without putting a camera down they cannot decide exactly what is causing the issue. But if I wanted they can replace the inside and outside pipe for about $11,000. They are a great company from what I can tell, very professional, responsive and punctual. But the price is little but higher than the rest, so I decided to go with another plumber.

The lady on the other end stated that they didn't even have me in their system. I know I had called them and made the appointment. They apparently have 2 or 3 other numbers. They stated they would call me back. I never heard from them but 2 men showed up at my house. They knocked on my door as if they were trying to save me for a fire. They rang the doorbell first, then banged on my door a few times, and when I still didn't get there fast enough, they started banging on the window. Completely unprofessional. I spoke to them through the door. I let them know that when I called, they didn't have any recollection of me being in their system. We are very pleased with their work. Trevor from Thomas E Clark was very professional. He assessed the situation, recognized there was a mold situation and was accomodating when I wanted to get a mold remediation specialist to help. Debbie at T.E.C. was very helpful in schedulding. Trevor and his colleague spent from 8am-8pm in my house ripping out all of the old flex duct work, replacing with new hard duct work. They fixed several areas that were not done properly by the previous contractor as well. The smell appears to be gone and the air flow is much improved. We would definitely recommend them and use them again.
