I strongly recommend MacKay for roofing services. As an architect, I am a very demanding and 'difficult' customer. Lou and his team listened well, responded accordingly, and did all the work that needed to be done and more. Lou is a pleasure to work with, extremely fair and reasonable, and the team he brought to the site were flawlessly courteous, hardworking, knowledgeable, and diligent. (My wife and daughter were comfortable with having them around our house.) Lou and his family have been working on Capitol Hill for two generations, with many repeat customers. My review is a bit late but I didn't see it within the reviews for this company and decided to submit it again. I purchased a coupon deal through Angie’s List from this company to have my roof inspected since more than 20 years have passed since it had been replaced. The MacKays arrived promptly as stated when we made the appointment. The employees were very professional, my roof was inspected, and I was shown pictures of my roof with an explanation of its condition. Since my roof did not need to be replaced, I advised my MacKay that I would call him to replace my roof when that time came. I was very satisfied with the services provided by this company.

The entire job went smoothly and was done quickly from the time I contacted them for an estimate until the work was completed. They supplied me with numerous photos documenting the state of the roof and chimney to support the estimate, and then with more photos showing the progress of the work through completion. The workers were prompt, thorough and efficient. We are very satisfied with MacKay.

Lewis and his crew did a fabulous job from start to finish. I have had horrible experiences with contractors in the past, overcharging for terrible work and making the situation worse, but Lewis was honest and reliable. He responded quickly to my call even during the busy season. He gave me an honest and fair estimate, and then continued to answer tons of questions that I had over the following months while I was getting other quotes and trying to make a decision. Lewis was patient and responsive, and after many months I decided to take the plunge. Lewis did everything above-board, getting the permits and approval from the historic district. His crew worked diligently through snow and freezing temperatures to completely replace my leaking roof and did a superb job paying attention to every tiny detail. Lewis communicated with me daily about everything they were doing. I have never had a contractor be so accommodating and communicative. I was so impressed with his crew that I ended up adding on more extras to the job and had him repair and refinish a roof on a second property I own. My roof looks spectacular now - much better than the old slate I had to replace. It was a complicated job which involved the replacement of a lot of rotten wood, old insulation, mansard roof sides and a flat roof with multiple old skylights. I would recommend him without any reservations to any of my friends and will use him for any roofing issue I ever have in the future.

The initial contact back took a little longer than expected, but Lewis was quite friendly. The son was no less friendly, and had a great sense of humor. They evaluated my roof and noted that it needed a full replacement, I didn't disagree; however, because of on going renovations, I couldn't afford a completely new roof. I asked for something that would last me 2-3 years, and they didn't hesitate or try to pressure into an upsell. I'll be going back to them when I need that roof replacement.

Although I didn't end up needing to hire MacKay Home Improvements for the project, the responsiveness was IMPRESSIVE! Turns out it's not a gutter issue, but a drainage issue and Lou let me know quickly (he happened to be nearby and checked it out). Now on to find a plumber. Thanks, Lou!

This spring/summer (2018) it rained a lot and the back of my home had a leak. It was supposedly repaired by re-caulking the sunroom but when it started raining again - the leak was back. I was so confused and was lucky to find Lewis. It was so hard to find someone to come out and look at the issue. Lewis was awesome! He returned my call the same day, was honest about the timeline and was able to look at the roof in a few days. He sent me pictures and recommended the repair. I could only see the leak inside my house and I knew I had the right person when he said: "do you have a leak in the rear corner of your home?" He explained that the flashing had come loose and he also gave me advice on another issue - cracks in the chimney. He also gave me guidance on the health of my roof. As a new homeowner, it was a relief to find someone who was honest and educated me on what I needed. I'll call Lou again this spring to repair the chimney and then again when the roof needs replacing.

Made sure we were satisfied with the start date and did a good job in getting the job done well and quickly. Afterwards, we noticed that some porch water still was able to run over the porch drainage system and they came to provide a simple new solution free-of-charge.

Mr. Mackay has been doing work in Manor Park for a long time, and his work was recommended by both new and old neighbors. The work was done well and we appreciated the communication as well as before/after photos of the work. We were pleased with the honest and professional assessment of what work needed to be done, specifically that a small amount of preventative work could extend the life of our roof without the need for replacement at this time.

It was excellent - from the initial meeting when Mr MacKay and his team came to seal roof leaks during heavy rain. The roof was inspected & a quote was submitted which was accepted. Mr MacKay & his team came and resealed the roof. The work was completed in 6 hours. They took photos to show their beautiful completed work. Everything was left is spotless condition. I would definitely recommend him and his team

Lou is great to work with. We were in a bind with a leaky roof and had a hard time getting a hold of a roofer. After calling 20 different companies, Mackay was the only one that got back to us the same day. He came out the same day, assessed the damage to our roof. Explained the whole situation and broke the news that we needed a new roof. Lou took the time to explain the work that needed to be done so we knew it was the right decision. Lou also encouraged us to get another opinion, but his explanation was so thorough that it wasn’t necessary. He tarped our roof the same day, and fixed our roof within a week. I can’t recommend these guys enough.

After a major windstorm we were left with about 4 missing shingles on our roof. The same day I tried to get ahead of the curve and called a few roofing companies that I'd found on Yelp. We were only able to schedule estimates from 2 companies, the rest said they wouldn't even be able to get to us for several weeks. I called Mr. MacKay's and reached his voicemail. He called me back the next day, which was a Saturday, and said he could come on Monday to provide a free estimate. He came and sent me the estimate via email. It wasn't an official invoice and contract like I was used to but it stated the service they would provide and the cost. We received another estimate that was slightly more and decided to go with MacKay's because he said if we were flexible he'd be able to make the repair within the week. Sure enough he called me on Thursday and was able to make the repair that same day. I appreciated the fast and friendly service. I met the elder MacKay after his son finished the job to make payment. He was incredibly friendly and made sure that I was satisfied with the work. Hopefully, our roof is good for a while but I would definitely use their services again.

You know, there have been many companies that stopped by after a major winter storm. This one stood out amongst them all! The prompt, courteous, down to earth professionalism was unsurpassed! The quality of work was quite exceptional and no hidden fees were attached. I would definitely recommend this pop and son blessing!

Lewis MacKay promptly responded to my request for an estimate for replacement damaged shingles from strong winds. He offered to attempt repairs that same day. Mr MacKay and his crew showed up the following Monday with color matched shingles to begin the job. The crew worked efficiently and professionally to complete the job in half a day. They cleaned up and removed all debris.

It went perfectly. The wind storm took place on March 1-2; I emailed Lewis MacKay on March 2, got a reply within an hour, and he stopped by my home the following day to look at the damage. Rather than repair the specific area where the shingles had come off, I decided to replace half the roof. The job was scheduled for and completed on March 8. The roofer left no debris and the roof looks great. It was a pleasure dealing with Mr. MacKay, who was informative, courteous, and professional. He showed up when he said he would and he answered all my questions.

MacKay and his crew did an outstanding job. I called, they answered and completed the job in a timely manner. Bi was very pleased with their work.

It went excellent. Arrived early for both free estimate and repair. Detailed and clear explanation of repairs needed. Completed on time and on budget. A tad more expensive than other estimate, but quality of work and service worth extra.
