The entire experience was excellent. It all began with the discovery on Sunday of a mysterious leak in the basement. The water was dripping from wooden beams supporting the kitchen floor. There was no evidence of pipes in the basement leaking. After frantic searches for what was causing the leak -- under the kitchen sink, under the dishwasher, behind the refrigerator -- none of which uncovered any wet pipes or obvious dampness, I looked up a plumber on Angie's List and selected Jesse Davis because of his good ratings. His old address in Mt. Rainier was still listed, so I was not sure he'd want to come to my place, about a 25-minute drive from Mt. Rainier. But when I called him on Monday, not only did he agree to come the next day, but he informed me that he had a new location, much closer to me, which is good news for me. Why that is so will become clearer as I continue my report. He arrived as promised after alerting me by phone. I'd speculated that maybe the plastic pipe in the basement leading from the water supply to a hole in the ceiling might be leaking once it disappeared through the hole and into the kitchen. Jesse took one look and agreed with my guess that it was the hose furnishing water to the ice maker and water spigot on the refrigerator. First, to be sure it was not something else, he calculated the distances of the hose in the basement and the refrigerator in the kitchen from the front of the house and looked under the other locations where the problem might have been instead. Then, sure that the refrigerator would need to be moved out, he proceeded to pull it from the wall. This was no minor undertaking. It is a double-door, very heavy refrigerator. At several points I thought getting that appliance out into the open would be impossible. It is wedged between a wall and the kitchen cabinets, upper and lower, so tightly that it is not possible even to rock it back and forth to get some momentum going. He knew there were wheels underneath but that they had probably settled in so firmly over the 12 years that the fridge was like an inaccessible car stuck in a rut. Like a miracle man, however, he lifted up on that refrigerator, pushed, shoved, yanked, leveraged his back against the cabinets opposite it, and finally got it to budge a fraction of an inch. After much more pulling and straining, he managed to get the refrigerator far enough from the wall that he could fit behind it. He quickly found the pin hole in the plastic hose. At first he was going to cut the hose to remove the part with the hole so the remaining length could be reattached to the fridge. Then it occurred to him that a better solution was to splice the good lengths together and at the juncture install a valve that I could turn off in the event of future problems with the ice maker. He went to Home Depot and purchased the part. When he got back he spliced the hose and installed the valve. The bill was $150 for labor (he charges $75 and hour with a two-hour minimum) plus the $7 cost of the valve. He had bought two of them so he would have one in his truck for future use, and charged me for the one he used. I was pleasantly surprised that for all the work he had done, the cost was so reasonable. I paid him, said I would go to Angie's List to rate his service, and he went on his way. After about an hour and a half, I noticed a sound behind the refrigerator that was not good -- like a vague hissing. I went to the basement, and found that the leaking was even worse than before. I called Jesse and left a message that I had to go for an errand but needed to ask him back. By the time I returned from my errand, he was waiting at my door. He got to work quickly, going through the ordeal of moving the fridge back out and examining what was going on. He found that the same hose had an even more pronounced pin hole that by now was spurting water at a pretty good pace. He showed me that this was at another point on the hose, so unrelated to the first one with the exception that the repair of the first hole had probably caused a worn spot elsewhere to undergo increased water pressure and spring a leak that might not have occurred otherwise. Given the age of the hose and these two leaks, he said it was probably wise to replace the plastic with copper. I was in full agreement. The main water valve was off at this point, and I left it off as he paid a return visit to Home Depot, returning in no time with the copper hose. I'd said I needed to leave the house again in another hour and a half or so, and he had promised to be done well before I needed to leave. He kept that promise and then some, finishing up within less than an hour from when he arrived for the second repair, including his second foray to Home Depot. This time, he had installed a brand new copper hose from the water supply in the basement, through the hole in the floor and onto the refrigerator. After he pushed the refrigerator back in place, I asked how much I owed, and he insisted that the additional time was at no charge. I was fully prepared to pay him another $75 for the extra hour, which was really an additional job, not just completing the previous job, but he said all he wanted was the $20 it cost for the copper hose. We briefly discussed other jobs that I might call on him for (and I will be doing that!). Jesse is a handyman I would recommend without reservation for any work around the home. He is prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, thorough and, especially when it comes to moving heavy objects, strong. Plus, he is very affordable.
Description of Work: Repair of a leak in the hose from the water supply to my refrigerator. The work included investigating the cause of water dripping and accumulating in the basement, diagnosing the problem as relating to my refrigerator water intake, moving the refrigerator to gain access behind it, splicing a plastic hose and installing a new valve (obtained on a run to Home Depot) at the point of the new splice. That was part one. Then the same hose, which is about 12 years old, sprang another leak at a different point about an hour later. Part two consisted of again moving the refrigerator, concluding that the plastic hose was too susceptible to further holes, again going to Home Depot and buying a length of copper hose to replace the plastic, installing the copper hose from the water supply in the basement to the back of the refrigerator, and again returning the refrigerator to its place.

Response from Jesse Davis Handyman Service
It is important to call a company that stays within their legal limitations. Jesse Davis Handyman is licensed to work on condos but only residential ones. The MHIC (Maryland Home Improvement Commission) has different views on what is a condo and what is an apartment. This is defined to them as a building with multiple dwellings stacked more than 3 floors and more than 4 units per building. This is for liability purposes.

He asked me where I live, and when I told him he said he was trying to change his demographic. However I just lived down the street. I found that to be very insulting. 3/5/2012 - There was no miscommunication. The representative clearly stated the company was changing their demographic and made no mention of changing their business address. Regardless, how would moving from Brentwood to Silver Spring prevent you from servicing customers in Cheverly? Company rep. gave clear impression that company doesn't provide service in Prince George's County.

It was explained to this member that our company had just moved and was no longer serving that area even though it was down the street from our OLD address. The word demographic was used in the context of location and clearly there was a miscommunication as the line was disconnected in the middle of my sentence. Upon trying to call back there was no answer.

Jesse arrived on time, started the job immediately after a walk through. He assessed what was needed and after having used all of the materials that I had purchased or neglected to purchase for the intended use. He went out and purchased what was needed for the additional repairs and completed the job. He worked continuously and quietly during this process but was quite personable and friendly overall. He did an excellent job of selecting the materials for the repairs on the sink. I am very pleased with the completed project! I will definitely call him again to do those things that most women don't know how to or want to do themselves. I have already discussed another project with him for my new place. ,
Description of Work: My request was that he replace the bulbs in all of the light fixtures associated with my 3-level leased home, change all filters, replace the batteries in my smoker detectors and provide a cosmetic repair under a kitchen sink that was damaged because of a persistent leak.

As I said above - the project went very well. They were also able to accommodate my schedule - even one day working on a Saturday- which was very helpful to me.
Description of Work: I used Jesse Davis (actually one of his assistants) to do some general repairs around the house. We had a small leak in the basement below the front door threshold. He located the source of the leak and made extensive repairs to the door threshold - saving me from replacing the whole door and frame. The service was excellent, punctual and the price was reasonable. He was a great handyman - such as you don't often find anymore. For instance, instead of the usual, automatic response of "just buy a new one" - he was able to be creative and find a way to fix the problem. Overall I was very pleased with the service and have confidence in their work - I will certainly use them again.

Jesse was very responsive, courteous and professional. We had to reschedule the original appointment because he got stuck in traffic, but he was very flexible and went the extra mile to accommodate my work schedule. He installed a new ceiling fan in my bedroom, and looked at a couple of other projects that are on my To Do list. He seems to be very busy because I haven't heard back from him with estimates for the other work I need done.

I'm sorry but Jesse Davis was a disappointment. He quickly answered my e-Mail about a couple of projects. I wanted the kitchen painted and wallpaper removed, but he said he couldn't compete in price against full-time painters. Previous reviews here indicate he has done painting. The other project was replacing a deteriorating security door. He begged off because he said he didn't have any experience in that line. I suggested a storm door instead. He said I could go on-line to find a suitable door and he would pick it up at Home Depot and install it. I called back with details but he said he couldn't take them down because he was in heavy traffic. He said he would call back. It's about a month later and I haven't heard anything except the sound of silence. [1/02/2012] Hello?

For each of the three jobs, the work was started on time and was completed to my satisfaction. Jesse is professional, personable and takes great pride in his work. He and his partner were friendly, punctual, very knowledgeable in their trades and were true to their word, in terms of when they would report to work. Additionally, they always took care to clean up after themselves at the end of the workday. I hope to have Jesse work on other projects in my home and would highly recommend him to family and friends. THANKS, JESSE AND FRANK!!! Brenda
Description of Work: Jesse and his partner did an excellent job of completely remodeling both a bathroom and a powder room in my home. They installed new tile (both floor and wall), wanes coating, new light fixtures, soaking tub, sinks, vanities, mirrors and wall cabinet. I have brand new bathrooms!! Their work is outstanding!! Jesse went above and beyond the call of duty in "snaking out" an extremely slow running bathtub drain. It was a long and arduous process but he stuck with and the tub drains perfectly now! I love my new bathrooms. (although I'm waiting for a special order to complete the powder room) The guys also installed beautiful recessed lighting in my living area and they look great!

I first contacted Jesse (via phone) a couple months ago. He informed me that he was not going to be available for the week I wanted to have some minor home improvement projects completed but for me to send him an email and he would get back to me. I sent the email through the Angie's List link. I waited and waited and never received a response. I decided to try again and called him. He answered and claimed he never received my email. Here is where it really goes downhill .... We agreed that I would pick up some of the items to save on time and that he would perform the work on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, 10:00 a.m. He even called to confirm my address before the Labor Day Holiday. At 10:17 a.m. on September 6th I called Jesse to find out what time he would be arriving. I put off an emergency dental appointment for Wednesday as the only time they could take me was 10:30 a.m. on September 6th. I didn't want to cancel Jesse because I knew he would be expecting the work. When he answered the phone at 10:17 a.m. he said he had 2 notebooks and must have double-booked appointments. I find that hard to believe! This level of professionalism is not indicative of what I expect from A Grade Contractors on Angie's List. I will definitely not use him for any projects in the future.

Unfortunately there was a scheduling mix up. When the customer called me I extended my sincere apologies for the mistake. I was in the midst of resolving the issue the best I could by pulling an employee off of another job down the street to go there immediately. Before I could suggest my solution I was hung up on. With the time of the year and the recent hurricane I have been extremely busy but have made steps to make sure these things are less likely to happen. -Jesse Davis

I chose Jesse Davis because of the laudatory write-ups his customers had given him on Angie's List and I was not disappointed. When I spoke to Jesse on the phone, he was pleasant and accommodating. He estimated that the job I had would require about 3 full days and estimated about $600-$700 or so per day. He sent out a co-worker to do the job, an extremely pleasant and hardworking gentleman, who worked steadily and efficiently throughout the time he was in my home. While I was home during the time the workwas being performed, I had a 1/2 day conference to attend on the third day of the work, and was extremely relieved that I felt completely at ease leaving him alone in my home to continue the work. I have two dogs, one of whom we recently adopted from the local shelter, and who is quiet shy and skittish. He was so attuned to her, and so good with dogs, that by the second day, she was literally his best friend. This was no small feat, as her nervousness and unpredictability was one of the main reasons I felt I had to be present every moment. The work was thoroughly, competently, conscientiously and pleasantly done. While an extra half day was needed to finish up the work, Jesse only charged me for the 3 full days he had estimated. Jesse came to my home a few days after the work was completed to inspect and ensure that I was satisfied. I thought that Jesse and his co-worker were consummate professionals and I would definitely use them again.

Several days after I contacted Mr. Davis, he returned my phone call and apologized for taking a while to get back to me. He explained that he had been away on vacation so I was fine with that. Mr.Davis was able to set up an appointment to come by my place to put together the chest the following day. Once that day arrived, he was a little late (he was lost) but he did call to get directions. He arrived with all of his tools to do the job and had everything done in a little over two hours. He had originally stated that it would probably take about two hours, and that's exactly what he charged me for. I was happy about that. Overall I was very pleased with Mr. Davis. I was very happy that he was able to make an appointment to come out so soon. He seem to be a very nice person, and defintely seem to be good with his tools. He did a much better job than I would have been able to do on my own. I would definitely use his services again.

Jesse was fabulous. I called him on one day and he agreed to come out the following day. He came and did the work. The price was actually quite fair. He was right within what he had estimated it would cost to repair 2 toilets. He was right on the money with what he thought was the length of time it would take for the repairs. He left everything absolutely clean. He didn't even use the rags that I left out in case he needed them. It was great. He is great. He came in the morning so I didn't have any issues. The cost was what he said it would be or a little less. He made a commitment to come on the following day and he showed up on the following day. I have not had any plumbing issues with the toilets that he fixed since. I think his price is a fair price. The quality of work has always been very good with him. I have 2 other projects I have him lined up for. We just have to get our calendars to match. He is my preferred plumber. The only reason that I did a job last year without him was because he was literally so booked. The amount I spent was for 2 hours worth of plumbing. The 2 toilets took him an hour or less with each. It worked out to $75.00 an hour.

We discussed our drainage issue with Jesse, and brainstormed various solutions. He suggested breaking up the existing concrete to install the pipe, and gave us a price that was reasonable. He and his partner did the work in one full day. so far, so good with our drainage problem! We are happy!
Description of Work: Jesse corrected a drainage problem on the patio and also replacing siding that had fallen off the house. To correct the drainage, Jesse had to dig up existing concrete in order to install a pipe that would connect with the downspout. He designed the downspout so all water would run into the pipe, under the concrete patio, and into another buried pipe that would take the water into an appropriate area of the yard. Jesse also installed a drain so rain water would be less likely to pool. He used new concrete to fix the patio. He also repaired the siding that had fallen down so that it was straight and attached to the house.

He did a good job. He did the job well for a good price. It was a really good value for the money. He was flexible, responsible, and showed up when he said he would. When he had to postpone the job for a day, he gave me notice. He was a good communicator and available. He was straight forward. Things went the way they were supposed to. There were no surprises. He was smart. He figured out how to do it without costing a lot of money. I had a bigger chain store out and they were going to do something that would cost a lot more and involve a lot more. I chose Jesse from Angie's List based on his good reviews and his very competitive price. He was able to come straight to my house when I first called him to quote on the job and was able to start immediately. The job took slightly longer than he had anticipated as the wallpaper was much harder to get off than either of us realised. However, he had quoted for the job and said he would stick with his quote. He installed new exterior lighting. After the job was finished I noticed some patches and asked him to come back to take a look. It appeared that he had prepped the walls after priming and so the prep showed through. He put on another coat of paint which somewhat fixed the problem. Again, no charge for the extra time. About a month ago one of the outside lights blew and I needed to replace it. However, neither I nor my neighbours were able to remove the light fitting. I called Jesse and he came back out. It seemed he had installed something upside down, but he was able to fix it and I hope now I can replace the lightbulb without bothering him again. And once again, he kindly did this job without charge. Jesse is extremely polite, personable, professional and punctual. I would certainly consider using him again.

I had a leak from upstairs bathroom through downstairs front-hall ceiling. My plumber was unable to diagnose the problem and gave up, suggesting I just needed to caulk around the tub. In about a half hour, Jesse was able to diagnose the problem, discuss solutions, and fix it. He recaulked the tub the right way (previous handyman had done a very poor job). While he was working on the tub, I mentioned that I hated the sliding glass enclosure for the shower. Jesse suggested removing it, which he did, a great improvement in that small bathroom -- he carried the old doors outside for pickup. Ialso asked Jesse to help me carry a large cabinet up from the basement through a narrow door. He did this by himself, and this required some ingenuity -- he ended up sliding under the feet of the cabinet when it was lodged in the doorway in order to get behind it and turn it through the doorway (the sight of his feet slowly disappearing under the cabinet was reminiscent of the wicked witch's feet curling under Dorothy's house...). Once the cabinet was upstairs, Jesse noted he had a few extra minutes left in the hour, so he hooked up my TV, DVD, cable and checked to make sure they were all working properly before he left. He is very personable and pleasant, but also very professional and efficient -- we did joke, after the cabinet effort, that Jesse will go over, under and around to get the job done! Definitely will use him again and have recommended him to a friend already.

Perhaps Angie's List should be just for people in business full-time, not hobbyists.

Before reading this please take note to how out of place this report is for a company that has an 'A' average and just accepted the 'Angie's List Super Service Award' for 2010. I tried to contact this potential customer MANY times via phone, email and even went as far as going to her house more than once and leaving my card on the front door. Despite her claims I decided it was easier to try to make her happy rather than argue. So what did I do? I went to her house that night, in the freezing cold and fixed her garage door FREE OF CHARGE. Even still, this person is trying to use this report as leverage to get me to do more work even after insulting my business and receiving $150 worth of free work. This person was never scheduled at any point. Sometimes I have a full schedule of customers I must serve (in the order they are received). As with any company, if you take weeks to respond to the many attempts made to contact you then chances are more people have been scheduled during that time. - Jesse Davis

great. all the work was done in less than 2 days. He was able to fit me in a couple weeks after i called him. He worked with one other laborer. They were both quick and hard working, they stopped only a few minutes during the day to have a bite to eat. I also have two large and boisterous dogs, which i tried to keep out of their way, but they didn't mind them and actually threw some sticks for them in the back yard. The wet bar turned out very nice, exactly what i asked for. The only thing I would have liked, or should have done, is cover the carpet where their muddy boots came in and out of the house. I had an extra floor mat, I should have laid it down. Or it would have been a good idea for Jesse to place a plastic covering over the carpet.
Description of Work: Basement wet bar remodel - modified and installed 3 lower cabinets, installed a butcher block countertop, drop in sink, disposal, and faucet. Cut baseboards for the area. Also removed an old broken attic door and installed a new aluminum one, which he picked up for me from home depot.

All seems to be working great! No problem. Seems to know his stuff - I had the faucet done by another handyman but apparently he didn't do it right and it leaked soon afterward. Can see this one doesn't. Same with dry wall. I like the fact that he works with you, lets you buy the materials and explains it all.
Description of Work: Removed old kitchen faucet, installed new kitchen faucet (he found and purchased for me a special adapter which was not included in the faucet I bought). He installed binds I just purchased in the living room ( 5 blinds). He found leak in dry wall - found previous dry wall was not done right and that's why we had a problem, followed that up with patching the brickwork and retesting brick work to see no longer leaking (after a few weeks of rain), then redid dry wall. Seems fine and no leaks at all now. Replaced outside water tap (hosebib) which previously did not work right. He tried simple cheap solution first with caulking, but when that didn't work, reran extra pipe, and installed new tap.
