The workers were very courteous and I didn't even notice them working most of the time, they clean up after each work day as if noone had been there. They even took there shoes off if they had to come inside my house. Again, very happy with the final product and the customer service during the whole process. Hometown came to my house in Virginia even though they are based in Maryland. I recommend Hometown to anyone who needs stone, fence, tree, or any type of landscape work.
Description of Work: I called around to a few different companies for an estimate on my backyard and decided to go with Hometown Landscape & Lawn Care after reading some good reviews online and hearing from some friends who had work done. John came by my house to give me an initial estimate and he was very knowledgable and courtious to my needs. He offered a couple different designs and materials that would work with my small, townhouse patio. He asked me what kind of ideas I had and what kind of design I wanted and drew some plans while we were talking. I also added that some portions of my fence were falling apart and there were some branches hanging over my fence which I didn't like. He said he could work up a package price to do the fence, patio. I decided to go with them and I am glad that I did because Hometown went above and beyond what I expected. I called and made an appointment within the same week. I received an email with my quote within 24 hours after meeting him, which no other company did. Communication with both the office and with John and his crew was great. They started work on a Monday and were done by Wednesday afternoon. They removed everything from my backyard to include patio furniture, BBQ, AC unit, and all original stone. They then flattened the all the dirt and layed the stone work. He even put little planter units in the corner so I can still grow cucumbers and tomatoes. They also repaired the loose and warped boards in my fence and put a fresh layer of water sealent. On the last day his tree crew came and cut all the overhanging branches so I can finally get some sun in my backyard. The final product looks amazing and I'm very happy.

John was very professional in our initial meeting, made several good recommendations on landscape design, and gave us a very reasonable estimate. When it came time to do the job, they brought out a number of crews to get the work done in a single day. They cleared out a few trees and a whole lot of messy shrubs/ivy/bamboo growing wildly in the back yard. They worked quickly and neatly, and we couldn't be happier with the results. I recommend them highly!

+ -1 moreThe service of taking the tree down was excellent. Everything before and after wasn't that great. I wrote them a check and didn't hear from them until a week later when I called them. I told them I had sent them a check a week before and they said they would take the tree down the next day. I waited and at about 1:00 pm, I called and said no one has come. They told me someone would come out the next day as long as it didn't rain. I waited that next day and no one came until that afternoon. They took it down very professionally, it was no problem. It was a big tree and they took it away. However, they had a truck with a tree grinding trailer which put tire tracks in my neighbor's yard. I called them the next day to let them know that my neighbor still wanted his yard fixed. It has been three weeks and I don't expect to see them ever again. They were the cheapest. I got a discount because of Angie's List. Taking down the tree was good, customer service was bad.
Description of Work: They cut down my black walnut tree and they ground up the stump.

Great craftsmanship in cutting stone to fit contours. Work was completed quickly. Crew was courteous throughout. Site was cleaned well. Have already engaged the company for additional projects. Highly recommended.

Description of Work: I met with Jeff their superintendent the week of the 22nd of August regarding the replacement of my front lawn (I own a townhome) due to poor drainage, soil etc. He gave me a price on the removal of the top 4" of ground (including the sod), replacing the under ground drain from the downspout, bringing in new top soil, and replacing the sod all of it done by hand. I was so totally surprised and excited when I came home from work and found that the work was done is such a professional manner; everything had been cleaned up and you couldn't even tell that they had been here except I now have a beautiful front yard. Jeff stayed in touch with me regarding what was being done and when and their foreman explained to me before they left how often to water etc. so that the sod does not die. I would recommend them to anyone for any work you need and you pay for what you get and I got the best!!!

+ 0 moreI have a contract from them and I like the guys but I am not sure I’m going to do the contract. Some of it was for a retaining wall that I have since found is not necessary. They are landscapers and not structural engineers. They are not erosion and water drainage experts. They were ready to build $20,000 worth of stuff and I didn’t need all of that. I like them but I could have very easily bought something that I simply didn’t need and it was pretty expensive. I have a contract and I might pick parts of it like the planting and things like that. I like them but I guess I learned my lesson that I need engineers instead of landscapers. They had an outstanding bid and were willing to change it. They suggested working with a designer so I got in touch with a designer and we had a good chat. I got a contract for working with the designer but after awhile I decided not to do that. They were still happy to work with me without the designer when I sort of had my ideas a little more flushed out. They were very professional. If I want to go high-end I think they are some of the best around.

Initial estimate was quite high, but considering the scope of work requested and logistics, was not unreasonable. Requested a 2nd, scaled back quote. Estimate was lower, but overall scope still out of my budget. Due to intertwined nature of jobs, I reluctantly had to forgo all. If I had budget to perform the work, these guys would surely get the job.
Description of Work: As no work was actually performed, I gave a quality rating of 'A' based on Company's willingness to attempt to accommodate my restricted budget. Not their fault my eyes are bigger than my bank account.

+ 2 moreThe yard was totally transformed. It had been unmanageable for years, but now it looks great. There were a lot of weather delays, spring showers and all that... but the wait was well worth the results. We had contacted a number of landscapers, several of whom took a look at our yard and simply refused the job! Hometown did it, and for a reasonable amount of money made it look fantastic. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: The front was cleaned, and new grass seed and straw laid down, mulch applied, a few branches trimmed back. The back and side yards were magically transformed from a harsh jungle into a nice mulched garden with a path through it and a lovely grass yard with sod laid down and mulch surrounding natural areas.

They came out and did the estimate, when I called back for the details they said they would give me a more thorough write up when I put the deposit down. I was a little disappointed, but they were also a lot cheaper so I decided I'd rather go with someone willing to put it in writing. They were definitely friendly and responsive to my request for information.

Description of Work: I had a yard clean-up, new mulch, edging, remove leaves from fall. There was some confusion about getting the work done but once they were there, they did a good job. I think they could do a better job on coordination for scheduling and also billing. I got a call that my account was 30 days past due when they had only done the work a week before.

+ -1 moreHowever, when I hired them to build a 4 step wooden stairs in the backyard, after paying the downpayment, I did not hear from them, and I called a few weeks later. The office told me that I was on the list but that they couldn't specify the date due to weather issues and scheduling. I continued to call every week and after 6 weeks, finally received a call that the crew would come to build the stairs. While they were doing the job, Hometown emailed me the bill for the balance, which was a bit surprising. When I got home, I found that the stairs had been poorly done, some of the steps uneven, two of the boards had been split when they hammered in the bolts. For the next 6 weeks, I tried to reach the owner (John) who is the only person that can make a decision or respond to questions or complaints. I did not hear back from him for almost 2 months. He then came to look at the steps, agreed to redo them and said that the crew would be back in a week or two. The crew came a week later to look at the steps, then left. 6 weeks passed and I heard nothing. I finally sent a letter requesting my money back--this job was obviously not important to them and it was too much work for me to have to constantly call them and follow up. John did send me my money back--6 months after they had cashed the check and I need to find another company to fix the stairs. Unless you have a big job that requires the presence of John the owner, you may have the same type of experience.
Description of Work: I hired Hometown to remove trees from around my new house--they were punctual and did a great job. They had also done a good job on the driveway of a neighbor.

+ 2 moreHe is a little difficult to get a hold of, but once you do he is great to work with! He gave us a great landscaping idea, which we ended up doing on our own. We planted a new tree, with some shrubs around it and reset the stone steppers. We would recommend Hometown to others in the area. The company we use to fertilize our lawn complimented the work done by them as well.
Description of Work: They removed some trees, laid sod and gave us some landscaping ideas for our yard.

+ 1 moreI wish that all of my contractors were like them. They were on-time, clean, professional, and came-in under budget. Furthermore, the work is immaculate. I am very particular when it comes to doing projects like this. What impresses me about John is that he talks to you, not at you. He was able to create a sketch of the ideas that I had envisioned and then provided an estimate. After completing the first project, several neighbors came to the house, stunned by the work that was done. Several have since hired Hometown Landscape to do hardscaping on their own properties. I would have no hesitation in giving Hometown a superior recommendation and plan on using them again in the future.
Description of Work: I have had them do work for me on 3 occasions. Project 1: They built a front patio with pavers and a beautiful stone wall that wraps around a third of it. There is a magnificent design in the center of the pavers. Project 2: They built a 20-foot diameter, octagon stone wall around our Oak tree. Between the tree and the wall, they planted flowers. Project 3: They built another stonewall (shaped somewhat like a tombstone) that boxes in our dogwood tree. There are also flowers planted inside the wall.

+ 0 moreThey do good work and I am very satisfied with their work. The only thing I do not like about them is that they are not prompt. We had to call and really work on them to get them to come because the fence had fallen down. I had to tell them to send my deposit back if they didn't come right away and they came right away. I have a dog that needs to be left in the backyard, so, it was kind of an emergency. They were not responsive at all until I became very insistent. However, their work is superb and you couldn't ask for better.
Description of Work: I use them for lawn and yard work. They also did some fence repair work for me.

+ -1 moreOverall nice and professional job with the mulching. When John gave us an estimate he told us where we could go to look at choices of mulch and we made a selection. We also asked for estimates for other projects we hoped to do. We had some difficulty communicating with office staff about the other projects because they just didn't seem to know what we had discussed with John. We asked several times for a written estimate re the other projects to clarify what he planned to do - but we only received phone calls giving us a price - which seemed expensive. We actually received a written proposal for the mulching and expected the same for the other projects (Hardscaping/pavers). We were also told someone would call the day before the mulching so we could mark some areas needing special care but no one called. We were happy with the mulching but wished we had asked how thick the mulch would be applied - it seemed pretty skimpy after several rains so I would suggest asking. The workers were polite, neat and very professional. We gave up on the other projects with this contractor.
