I was told that because the damper did not work well, if at all, that the cleaning would be affected by the fact that they cold not open the damper enough to get all the soot. I worried a bit that I might be taken advantage of (as this seems to happen a lot with other vendors), but the owner himself was on the job and seemed very trustworthy so I agreed to have the additional work done. It turned out that I got a fair price for a new damper (after I researched it after the fact). I will likely use them in the future.
Description of Work: HIred them for a cleaning only but the damper did not work well at all so I had to spend extra for that to be replaced.

Description of Work: They cleaned our very dirty dryer vent. It's a bit of a pain because the vent is in the wall. They were on time and did a good job. My only complaint is that they asked for a bag to pick up a lot of lint that was on the ground outside our house but they forgot to pick it up.

 + 1 moreIt went very well. The professionals came in with appropriate gear. they set up a tent at the mouth of the fireplace and I think a vacuum to whisk away the soot. From intake to delivery of services, everything ran like a well-oiled machine.
Description of Work: We made an appointment after discussing the estimate. The company dispatched workers immediately. The professionals were meticulous in their work. Also they were very conscientious of maintaining the cleanliness of our home. The procedure used in rebuilding the interior of our chimney wast quick, efficient, and economical. I was expecting to come home and see my house looking like a scene from Mary Poppins! Chim-chim-iney! It wasn't. New stainless steel liner, new cap on chimney, and a new damper (" a spoonful of sugar....").

That cost estimate is also reasonably priced & when I'm ready to complete that portion, I will certainly call Capitol Chimney back to perform the work. I have already recommended Capitol Chimney to others & will continue to do so.
Description of Work: (I'm sorry I don't remember the exact date or amount I paid Capitol Chimney; however, it was last fall & I used their Angie's List coupon, so the price was excellent.) Capitol Chimney performed a chimney inspection--inside & out--as well as a chimney sweep.

 + -1 moreVery easy to set up the appointment. Office staff were polite and courteous, I missed the 1st appt and rescheduled, 9-12 on 3/30/13. Message confirming my appt was left on my voice mail the preceding Friday. I called 11:20 and left message to confirm that I was still on schedule, did not hear back. Obtained a different # from the company website left message at 12:20 asking for status. Received call back within 10 minutes from a person who was not my scheduled person. He was polite and apologetic and indicated that the guy scheduled for my work had a truck breakdown. He did not understand why I did not get a call. He was working in Silver Spring and would head up to me next. The original person, Javier and a partner arrived around 1:10pm. Identified himself at the door and as I was letting him in I thanked him for coming, his reply was "no problem". It did not appear that there were any indications of mechanical issues that caused the delay (mannerisms or vehicle indicators). He shined his light up the chimney stated that my Damper was "all broken up and rusted" and should be replaced. He observed that my house would have been drafty because of that. They could take care of it for $425. As he was sitting there I stated that I don't have $425, I understand about the draft. Can you still sweep the chimney? They did their set up and I was surprised that there were no coverings used to guard against debris entering the living room so I watched from the dining room. They cleaned up once they were done and left the estimate for the Damper. I looked at the Damper, it was not lined up with the opening but was not broken, there was some rust (house built in 1950) but, did not prevent it from closing. I repaired the Damper by replacing a $3 wire that secured the handle to the lip of the Damper. The chimney sweep was acceptable but, no covering to catch debris was unusual. I am disappointed with the lateness without an apology and the misinformation about the condition of my Damper.

 + 1 moreOverall, I feel that Capitol Chimney Services is all about making money and not about building customer relations. This is a company that I will not contract in the future or recommend to anyone.
Description of Work: I would definitely not use or recommend this company. Our home has a gas fireplace with a chimney that I recently had serviced by another company which recommended a chimney cap be installed in order to keep animals, debris, and reduce a down draft from blowing out the pilot light. Although my fireplace is gas, I thought it still needed a chimney sweep. So I used Angie's list to hire a contractor. Since Capitol Chimney Services was offering a special on chimney sweeps and based on the reviews, I decided to hire them for the job. After purchasing the $90 special for a chimney sweep on Angie's List I discovered another special that also included the installation of a chimney cap for $219. I immediately called Capitol Chimney Services to make the correction. The person I spoke with told me that she would let the service technician know to charge me the difference when he comes out to perform the service. The technician was scheduled to arrive between 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. on March 28th. However, at 12:05 p.m. I received a call informing me that he was stuck in traffic and would arrive shortly. Approx. 25 minutes later he arrived at my home. The technician, Roger (who I would later learn is the owner of the company) was not aware that a chimney cap needed to be installed and that I was to pay the difference as previously discussed over the phone with his office. Nonetheless, Roger honored the special (especially since they would be making more money). During the installation of the chimney, I was told that the top of the chimney had major cracks in it and would cost an additional $265 to have it repaired. Roger told me that he could come back and do the repairs at a later date however, I decided to go ahead and have it done since he was already here. After the masonry repair was completed, Roger showed me a before and after photo taken using his smartphone. In my opinion, looking at the before picture, the top of the chimney wasn't damage as described by Roger, it was minor cracks on the crown. Also, when I looked at the after picture, there is no way the repair cost $265 however, since I didn't get a second estimate I feel that I could not complain about the amount charged. After the work was completed and spending a total of $484. I found another offered on Angie's list by that would have saved me a little more money. I contacted Capitol Chimney Services within 30 minutes of the repairs being completed about purchasing the special for $99 that offered a chimney sweep and $100 towards any masonry work. The girl I spoke with said, she would have to discuss it with the boss and would call me back. Several days later and after seeing that my credit card had been charged the full amount, I decided to followup with my request. I contacted Capitol Chimney Services and spoke with a female named Linny. She told me that she would have the owner, Roger, call me. Shortly, I received a call from the owner, Roger Valasquez . After explaining everything to the owner he brought to my attention that he was the one that worked on my chimney. That really took me for a loop. I couldn't figure out why he would have me explain everything to him. Mr. Valasquez wasn't willing to give me a credit of $92.00. Also, based on additional research, I discovered that gas fireplaces do not need chimney sweeps. Not to mention, that the gas fireplace had only been used a few times. I decided to end the call when he kept saying that he did me a favor by servicing my chimney due to it being a gas fireplace and his company does not service gas fireplaces. My response to him was had he told me this prior to doing the work we would not be having this discussion. I really feel that I was charged for a chimney sweep that he knew I didn't need. The lesson I've learned is just because companies are advertised on Angie's list doesn't necessarily mean they are trustworthy and ethical. In the future I will use "word of mouth" (whenever available) when hiring contractors. The only reason I did not give this company an "F" is because Roger took the time to show me how to light the pilot light on my gas fireplace. In addition, he noticed that the electronic ignitor was defective. I don't know if this was because he had a guilty conscious about overcharging me!?!

 + -1 moreCapital Chimney was fantastic! We used a Big Deal but ended up needing to have them come out a second time because there was too much wrong with our chimney for it to be cleaned. They were on time the first time, but we're a few hours late the second time. Really wish they would have called - instead of me calling them to find out they are running late. Overall the job they did was fantastic, and they cleaned up after themselves properly as well.
Description of Work: Used them to fix almost every problem imaginable, from putting in a flue to getting out dead birds.

 + -1 moreWe thought we were asking for a simple chimney cleaning. But when Roger got here, AFTER laying out all the covers etc and removing his shoes!, he said he couldn't clean it because the inside of the chimney was unsafe. (I can't remember the exact words.. i just know he said.. don't use this fireplace.) Guys came back the next week (at my request) to totally ream out the old flu liner and replace it with a new one. The job took two whole days. I'm not sure what THEY expected it would take but I was surprised. In the end, the price was exactly what was quoted.

 + -1 moreThey were punctual and came on time. They did do the set up to make sure that when they were cleaning the Chimney they closed the fire place so not to make a mess. Give or take it took about 30-40m minute to do the whole job and inspect the chimney. The owner of the company also told me what kind of repairs I needed for the chimney and the service they provided. The price he offered me was reasonable to the market price I was offered by another company. Overall, I would hire for future jobs.
Description of Work: They cleaned my chimney for me.They also inspected the chimney and furnace line too. I was told that my chimney and the line for the furnace was not lined and needed to be line. It was going to be a separate job and how much would it cost me. I have not done it yet because it is not in my budget at the moment but will plan to do it soon.

 + 1 moreGot a deal off AL for chimney sweep. These guys were super nice and knew what they were doing. They noticed the fact that the chimney cap was cracked and in need of replacement. They also noticed that my dryer vent was clogged. They were able to fix both of them that day. They sucked the lint out of the dryer into their vacuum instead of blowing it all over my yard and the neighbors' yards. A couple weeks later I noticed the dryer vent was off at the dryer itself. They came out and fixed it for nothing, even though it was probably not installed properly when we got a new dryer; they hadn't touched that end, only taken it off the wall.

 + 0 moreHad them over to sweep the chimney, did a thorough job, they pulled four squirrel carcasses out of the flue, and were very clean ,and conscientious with regard to the property and furniture. I asked for a quote for installing a wood burning insert, and got a very competitive price compared to others I had received, so we decided to go ahead with it. Long story short, we had some issues with the distributor of the insert sending the wrong model, wrong backing piece, delayed delivery and all the things that go along with that, brickyard running out of matching bricks, more delays. Roger kept me informed every step of the way and worked very hard to smooth out what could have been a very bumpy road. They rebulit the chimney from the roofline and installed the insert within a couple of working days. Everything came out fine, they gave a ten year guarantee, and even picked up and delivered a half cord of wood to my driveway.
