Don't let their initial low cost teaser on the web fool you because you will quickly be up-billed to more than twice the web quoted price. However, additional services by Capital Chimney included in the higher cost include 1) soot left in your living room, 2) a mess of soot and ash in your front yard, and 3) your furniture not restored to original locations after the cleaning. The lack of attention to detail by Capital Chimney is truly outstanding!

 + 2 moreI had that work done by two of their technicians. They were very professional and did an excellent job. The company applied toward this job the amount I had paid to Angie's List for inspection and cleaning, and also gave me the 10% senior discount. I am very satisfied.
Description of Work: Initially, I paid $99 through Angie's List to have my chimney inspected and cleaned. After the inspection, the technician showed me pictures he had taken and explained to me that the flue was damaged, that the mortar between the terra cotta segments was missing in some places and that the segments had moved with respect to each other. This creates the risk of creosote formation and makes using the chimney dangerous, as it does not meet code requirements. He recommended installing a stainless steel liner and a combination cap/damper, fixing the flashing, and parging inside the firebox.

 + -1 moreThe first problem is that they took forever to come out after our damper broke. We excitedly lit fires after they did their work and the whole house stunk like a camp fire. It took weeks to get the smell out. We called them back out after trying a few failed remedies. It again took weeks to get an appointment again and then the man who came to take a look was a complete jerk. He was very rude, defensive and had no solutions. He clearly treated me differently than he treated my husband who was there for the first interaction. He patronizingly mansplained that the fireplace works differently in the wintertime and blah, blah, blah, but failed to explain why this was a new phenomenon following their initial work installing the damper. As he was leaving he said, "Just want you to know I am the owner", in a really arrogant way so there's no one to complain too.
Description of Work: The initial work was to replace the damper. The second visit was to consult how to fix the campfire smell that was persistent throughout the entire downstairs following their "repair".

Description of Work: I had the chimney cleaned and inspected. The technician also visually inspected the chimney from the bottom up and top down with a flashlight. He also inspected the chimney crown and used his smart phone to take some photos of that and the extreme top inside of the chimney (approximately the top 2-1/2 feet.) The inside pictures of the chimney identified one cracked piece of chimney liner. He provided me a written report of the chimney cleaning and inspection, and a recommendation with a quote to replace the chimney crown and renewal of the entire chimney liner at a quoted price of $1,800. Renewal of the liner as I understood his explanation actually meant inserting a new sort of tubular liner (not clay tiles as it was constructed with) that would be surrounded with some sort of fireproof insulating material and include a new damper. Unlike the current damper which is positioned just inside the firebox, the new damper would be located on top of the chimney using a cable run down through the chimney to control the opening and closing of the damper. Although this all sounded reasonable, I was not satisfied that the entire liner had to be replaced because of a picture showing one cracked tile liner. I asked the technician to send me the pictures he had taken, but I never received them. Regardless, I did a visual inspection similar to what the technician did using a bright spot light to view the chimney from inside the firebox, and from the top of the chimney looking down. I didn't notice any visible cracked liner tiles at the bottom of the chimney, but did note the single cracked liner atop the chimney that he had shown me on his smart phone. I was satisfied with the inspection and the written report that was provided. However, before I would consider spending $1,800 to replace the entire chimney liner, I would need to see a more thorough video inspection of the liner from top to bottom to make certain there weren't any other issues affecting the condition of the chimney that might need to be addressed.

 + -1 moreWell, and promptly from a Friday afternoon appointment request. Abraham and Giovanni were running slightly behind (though I was their last call of the day, so that's understandable). They promptly serviced the wood stove's chimney, leaving the area cleaner than they found it and being careful with the stove (a functional antique cast-iron piece). Very happy with this service, though they did indicate that I should have been charged $129 vs the $99 I paid for the Angie's List Coupon. I'd like to see the company clarify that language in their future offers, though I don't think $99 is an unreasonable price for a relatively short and accessible (1-story roof) sweep job. The masonry chimney inspection was a bit cursory - it was late, near or after dark and the end recommendation was to rebuild the chimney above the roofline, with a surprising cost (which may be entirely fair and accurate; it was simply surprisingly large). I will get a few more estimates done in daylight to assess the work required and compare costs prior to committing to that work. All in all, quite satisfied with the cleaning service, would use this company again in future.
