We just bought our house, and the back yard was full of poison ivy . There is ground cover adjacent to the fence, and we didn't want to kill this with a spray. We hired Baumann's to pull the poison ivy by hand. The charged a little more than we would have liked to pay, but they did a very thorough job, removing not only poison ivy, but removing all the weeds amongst the ground cover.

They had a better price than two other companies that I also interviewed and I think they did a good job. The owner seems to be very knowledgeable and fair. I find them very reliable.
Description of Work: There was a huge stand of bamboo in our back yard. Baumann's Lawn & Landscape removed the bamboo and tried to chop up the woods.

Designer was pleasant. Mr. Bauman was insistent on a very high priced solution that did not fit our vision, needs or budget.
Description of Work: Bauman required a $150 fee for the designer to come to our yard and lay out a plan. We had 2 other landscapers come without fee. Bauman came back with an estimate of $26,000 to do a walkway around the side of the house. The other 2 estimates were in the $6000 to $7000 for walkway and plants. Bauman explained that they were putting in a full concrete walkway base and the flagstones on top of that. When we asked for a different configuration without the full concrete, they sent another representative to look at the job. This person told us that the initial estimate was way out of line; however, the call the next day from Bauman was to tell us that the walkway had to be done in this very expensive way so obviously we went with someone else and felt that the price had more to do with our neighborhood than with our request.

This is the 3rd year I have used Baumann's Lawn and Landscape, Inc. and have been very satisfied each time they have come out. They are always on time and clean up after they have finished. I'm really pleased with the new bushes and sod that was put down. My yard now looks like what a front yard should look like. Overall, I've never been disappointed with anything that Mr. Baumann has recommended. He makes sure I'm satisfied with the work done before he leaves. I would definitely recommend him to anyone if asked.
Description of Work: Planted 4 new bushes in the front yard due to the ones that were there before had died and been removed. Needed to have sod put down in the front yard after the yard was dug up to fix a plumbing problem. Mulch was put around the existing bushes and plants in both the front and back yards. River rocks were put down at the end of the drain pipe to help the soak up the water in the back yard.

I contact Baumman about 1 year ago. The estimate for the work was a bit high and so I asked if we could do it in 2-stepts. Replant the hedge (that was practially dead) in 2011 and redo the rest of the work in 2012. It split about $1800 and $1300, which - while not even- was about what I wanted to spend. We redid the hedge in June (I contacted late). And it looked great (you can find an earlier review from me). I contacted Rick again in November saying I wanted to do part 2. I wasn't sure what needed to be ordered, or designed for the rest. We were putting in pavers and creating 2 different beds for flowers/bushes. He told me to recontact in March. I did and waited and didn't hear, so I called. When I talked to Rick - he was great. Said that even though prices had gone up, he would honor the original estimate. I really appreciated that. I also asked for a rough sketch, to make sure we were both on the same page with the work that was going to be done. Another week went by and I didn't hear anything. So I contacted Rick by email again. I said he didn't find a sketch that he had done last year (which I know he didn't do one - at least none that he gave me), and asked me to send some photos so he wouldn't have to make a trip. So I said sure and provided the photos from a couple of different angles - that was March 29 (2 weeks since my first contact with him). And again I waited. On Apr 4th, I emailed to confirm he had received the photos and he said he had and would get me a sketch that evening. A week later, April 11th, he again asked me for photos -- I replied that I sent them on the 29th and he confirmed he received them. Quickly he replied with a sketch and a new estimate for $800 more then last years - even though he said he would honor it! On April 12, I replied thanks for the sketch, and asked why the estimate had gone up so much (I would probably have been ok with $100 but $800!). He replied that HE had DECIDED to change out some of the plants and add a tree.... without checking with me??? I replied that I don't want a tree... the city has one right in front of my house, so I don't need one. He said he would revise the estimate and get back to me. Today is the 17th of April, I have not received a revised estimate - nor heard from Rick again... I will be working with a different landscaper! Unless you have more patience then me (and I waited over a month already)... then I would not recommend working with Baumman!
Description of Work: I wanted to redo the front yard of my row house. It's not large but I wanted to remove my grass and some bushes, replant the hedge and plant some flowers, rose bushes, etc...

I usually call 3-4 companies for an estimate for any service I'd like to have done, but after reading the Angie's List reviews of landscapers I decided to go with Baumann's Lawn & Landscape over any of the other options. I was impressed by the comments that indicated they are able to work with people on deciding how to best do their project and also don't view jobs as being too big or too small for them. On Wednesday, March 21st, Rick and I spoke in general terms about the type of work I'd like to have done (retaining wall, planter, and shrubs). He agreed to send his mason out to the site that Friday, March 23rd and check in with me after assessing the site. After our call, I sent him photos of the lawn, the type of landscaping I have in mind, and photos of the type of shrubs I would like to have planted. When I did not hear back from him for a week, I sent him an email on Wednesday, March 28th to check-in. That evening, he emailed me back to say the project was over the scope of his work and it would be difficult to go through the DC permitting process for a wall over 3'. I actually did not want a wall over 3', but a short brick retaining wall at the sidewalk level. I wrote back to ask if he could do the project another way and have not heard back. Overall, I was extremely dissatisfied with this experience. Given that his response to me came 5 days after he'd stated I'd hear from him, I would have expected a call to follow-up. Also, from the reviews on Angie's List, I was expecting to hear back from him with an alternative proposal as opposed to an outright rejection of my project. I'm sure Baumann's Lawn & Landscape has done some great work and provided amazing customer service experiences to others, but I can not be counted among them.
Description of Work: I contacted Rick Baumann to provide an estimate for the creation of a retaining wall and landscaping at the front of my home.

The entire process -- start to finish -- was seamless. Last Fall, Rick (the owner) sent a landscape designer he works with to my house. I told her the kind of landscaping I was looking for and types of plants I liked. Based on this and her measurements, she came up with a plan. Rick gave us an estimate of the cost to complete the project. His estimate seemed very fair. We waited until spring to start the project. Rick kept me updated on the planned start date and called us once all the plants were in. He and his guys completed everything in two days. The work is BEAUTIFUL. It has made a huge difference in the appearance of our home. Rick is really knowledgeable about landscaping and I think one could completely trust his opinons on all things plant/lawn related. His pricing is fair. I would HIGHLY recommend Rick for any landscaping projects. He is a true professional. I am looking forward to having him redesign my backyard!
Description of Work: We used Baumann's to remove existing plants and re-design the landscape for our front yard. The work included extending our drainage pipes from the house to the street and planting all new plants (bushes, grasses, trees) along the entire front of our house.

I received a few estimates from companies on Angie's List for leaf removal. The hourly rates of these companies really have quite a range, which is surprising given how leaf removal isn't terribly skill-dependent. Anyway, Matt Baumann came out to see the yard and gave what I felt was a reasonable estimate. They weren't the highest, and you can probably find a lessor crew to do the work at a lower cost, but I expect you won't see the same results. They had good reviews for similar work, so we went with them. The crew showed up a little earlier than expected (definitely better than showing up late or no-showing) and started right away. They seemed to work quite efficiently, which is nice when a company is billing per man-hour. They used strong blowers to get every last leaf in places we didn't even think to look, and even off of our deck. In the end our yard was spotless. They really did a better job than I expected. Far better than it would've come out if I did it myself, and much much faster.I will definitely use them again next season.
Baumann's work has been so professional, and the results so impressive, my neighbors have terminated their landscaping service providers and have switched to Baumann. Rick has made numerous beneficial suggestions, carefully explained their intentions, and always guaranteed his work (and plants). Where some landscaping companies zip in and drop-off a different bunch of day-laborers each time, many of Baumann's crew have worked for him for years. That, in my opinion, is a positive reflection on the employer. If the lowest bid is your single decision criteria, then Baumann probably isn't for you. If professionalism, quality work and dependability are important to you, this is the landscaping company of choice.
Description of Work: Several years ago, Baumann assumed responsibility for our residential landscaping and lawn care, after our original landscaper became increasingly unreliable.

I found Baumann's Lawn and Landscape on Angie's List and followed up with Consumer Checkbook, then discovered they were also listed in "Best of Bethesda". Everything went very smoothly. Rene came by and explored options with me. She provided two designs. Rick's team came in and cleared the yard, followed by Tony who laid the stone work. Then Rick's team returned and did the planting and mulching. Total installation time was probably about 10 days, considering that 2 days were below freezing, so they had to wait until that passed. It is fabulous.
Description of Work: Rick Baumann and company did a complete overhaul of my back yard, a row house north of Georgetown. Services included a wonderful design by Rene, clearing the original yard, including removal of bamboo roots under the soil. Installation of a new sidewalk to the alley, laying a patio and a curved flagstone walkway to an area for a bench at the rear, was overseen by Tony ... very skilled. All this was topped off with beautiful perennial plants and trees. I am looking forward to Spring when the color pops.

On the day the job was scheduled to begin, Rick Baumann's crew came early to clear the lot. The weeds in the lot were no joke. Many times they had defeated me during half-baked attempts I had made myself to clear them out. In the humid summer, many had grown thick stalks as tall as I am. But I came back at the end of the day, and it was just a smooth patch of dirt. They must have worked liked crazy. My back yard is on a narrow alley with nowhere to park, and they had to move their vehicle a few times to let neighbors in and out. They were very patient about that, and luckily we were eventually able to use my neighbor's yard to park their truck in. They hauled away all the weeds and junk from the yard that first day. The fencing company then had to take down the fence and put in the posts for the new one, so that Baumann's crew could put in the pavers around the posts. That took a day or two. Then Baumann's crew came back, this time led by Tony, the guy who would be in charge of installing the pavers. The quality of Tony's workmanship and his attention to detail can't be overstated. He went over the plan with me first and took care to address some key issues--namely that the grade of the lot would be such that water would run into the alley (not back toward the house), and that three PVC screw-top pipe openings in the lot, which served as access points to the often-problematic main drainline for the house, would be paved around, so we would still be able to snake that drainline if necessary. Once they started (Tony and one or two assistants), they were plagued throughout the job by rain on days when it wasn't supposed to rain. This was especially problematic when they had seal the material between the pavers...or something like that. The pavers had to be dry for them to do that. But they worked in between showers and took as long as they needed to do a fantastic job. The grading, the straightness of the paving along the property lines, the way they cut the pavers to go around the posts and the pipe access points--it was all done flawlessly. Once they finished that, a day or two went by, and then Rick came back to grind down a partial stump that was back in a corner strip behind my AC condenser. The stump had been more than bargained for when initially clearing the lot, but he came back and did it soon after the pavers were in and put down a nice bed of smooth stones in that strip. The whole lot looked great. After the initial deposit of one third, the only time they mentioned money again was when Rick asked me if it would be alright to add $275 to the agreed amount because they hadn't figured an area along the alley into their calculations and had had to order more pavers. It seemed fair enough and probably wasn't more than the cost of the pavers. Then at the end, Rick didn't want me to settle the balance until he had finished with the rock bed in the corner. They sent an invoice by email a week or so after finishing everything. I would recommend this company to anyone who needs to do some landscaping. I felt like I got my money's worth. It's the kind of company I really like hiring.
Description of Work: I had a backyard that was a jungle of tall, thick weeds, leftover tree roots, a stump, and some dirt, surrounded by a rotting wooden fence falling down in some places. Baumann's company cleared the lot and installed pavers over the bulk of it. In a more or less useless strip of land behind my AC condenser, where it wouldn't have made sense to put in pavers, they cleared it and put in a bed of nice, rounded stones. A different company was going to take down the old fence and put up a new one.

Called the company and talked with one of the brothers. He explained their services and sent a contract. I signed and sent back. They send monthly , timely bills and do all of the yard work on time through the summer, fall and late fall.
Description of Work: Found Baumann's on Angies list this past summer. I was unhappy with 2 previous lawn companies. I now know what a professional lawn service can really do. My yard has never looked this good. For the same price as other companies, Baumann's cuts, trims, aerates, seeds and meticulously does the leaves and we have MAJOR leaves. When I call they are polite and responsive. No drama and very professional and helpful. I will use them again next year. Can't imagine how good the yard may look next year after they have worked on it for a year.

Baumann's came out to clean up our back patio and parking area, removing weeds and a little refuse. They did a fantastic job. I highly recommend Bauman's Lawn service. See section on services performed for more details.
Description of Work: My backyard was a nightmare: bamboo, tree stumps, pipes from who knows what, buried paving, and holes. You could hardly walk around back there. I also had overgrown shrubs on the side of the house that served little purpose but to harbor weeds and vines. It was an embarassment. I got a couple quotes from a few services on Angie's list and Rick's was in line with theirs, although he added in an Angie's list discount. More than the discount, I felt very confident about hiring him after talking with him. He's responsive, knowledgable and helpful. I told him I didn't want him to use Roundup and he agreed to use vinegar instead (he was cautiously skeptical, but was pleased to admit that it worked quite well). Although it was a huge job that took me years to finally commit to do, it took him only two days. He cleared the land, graded it and laid sod. As an extra, he took down the old chain link in the back alley behind my wood fence that made it impossible to keep that area weeded. He also purchased the wood and constructed raised beds, which hadn't been in the quote. He convinced me to take up the old sidewalk that was mostly buried--a good call, since the rest of the yard would have looked great except for that. I got a late start in calling him and we were laying sod when the tempuratures were quite high--something that is not advised. Rick was quite adamant about regular watering. It was clear he cared more than whether he simply got the job--he wanted to make sure the sod took root and that I got the yard I wanted. I highly recommend Rick and Bauman's Lawn and Landscape and will hire him again if I have additional projects.

Once Ron sent me the second estimate (for the half that was going to be completed this year), he didn't mention that I needed to send him 1/3 of the money upfront -- so I was waiting for a schedule date that he was coming out. I had to call him and ask him what was up. Finally I sent him a signed copy of the contract with the deposit and he cashed my check -- and I still didn't hear from him, so no idea when they were coming out -- not that I had to be there - but I just wanted to know. So I called him again (on a Monday), and he said he was working the schedule would call/email me back that night or the next Morning. When by Friday I didn't hear back from him -- I called once more and finally got a response that they were coming the next week on Friday. While, I realize they are busy -- I should not have to keep after them, to find out when they are coming out to do the work. Meanwhile, it turns out that I was working from home the day they came out (not planned). The guys were awesome! They replaced by dying (and dead) hedge. The new bushes look awesome. The cleaned up after themselves. You wouldn't even have known anyone/anything had been there. It looks so great! I wish I could have finished the whole project this summer, as the rest of the lawn looks terrible next to the new hedge - but unfortunately I can't afford to... but now I can't wait till next summer to get the rest of it done - I think that they will do a wonderful job!
Description of Work: I called Bauman's after being blown off by a different A rated landscaping company. Ron came out and gave me some great ideas for replacing my hedge and adding some new flower beds (basically a redo of my entire landscaping). I live in a rowhouse -- so this is not really a huge job -- so I appreciated the time he took with me. He sent me the estimate right away. It was way over my budget so we talked thru it and decided to split the job in half, half to do this year and half next year.

They haven't suddenly jacked up prices over the years which is good. They've been prompt and timely with the service. The only possible complaint would be for things like aeration and fertilization which they did and significantly increased the bill for that month. However, I know these are needed. During the heavy droughts, they didn't charge which is admirable. The owners have been generally responsive if I have to speak with them.

I contacted Baumann's after being blown off by another "A" rated company on Angie's list in the Silver Spring area. Although I have a townhouse with a very small yard, I really wanted to get rid of my lawn full of weeds and give my house some low-maintenance curb appeal. Ron came out the day after I spoke to him and left an estimate for the work. I agreed to everything expect removal of a tree stump as it was on community property. Due to rainy weather, it took Baumann's about two weeks to come out and do the work. It turned out great! Ron even removed the tree stump for free as he didn't want it to detract from my lawn. I highly recommend Baumann's as they really take pride in their work no matter how big or small.

It was sort of an unusual request, and it was not typical landscaping work. Their price was very competitive - it was way better than another bid that I had received. Their responsiveness was excellent. Rick was very willing to commit people on pretty short notice, and they worked very hard. I have a good feeling about that interaction. After having a terrible experience with the Johnson Landscaping last spring, my husband and I were just terrified to get another landscaper. Finally in the fall we felt brave enough to give it another try. Enter- Rick Baumann from the Baumann's Lawn and Landscape. Unfortunately we did hire them too late in the fall so no work could be done until the beginning of Spring this year, but they were so professional- showed up on time, did all the work just right and Rick even made sure to ask me about the things he was on the cusp about instead of just doing what he felt would be right (we've had contractors do that to us before). He would even warn me about certain areas that might change in appearance in order to prepare me and thus minimize the shock impact afterwards. All in all, they preformed the job beautifully and we will definitely use them again and recommend their services to all of our neighbors. :)
Description of Work: - Clean up the shrubs in the front yard, take out a tree-like weed, plant a new tree in it's place and add azalea bushes to fill in the holes, plant the ground cover and add decorative edging. - Clean and pave the walk-way on one side of the house, prune the bushes on the same side and plant some ground cover. - Clean and pave the area on the other side of the house where our trash-cans and the firewood sit and build the fence around that area so that the trash cans are not exposed - Clean up the back yard, prune the bushes, add some more grass seed onto that lawn, create a little herb and vegetable garden.

I contacted Baumann's to excavate out an old, poorly maintained gravel driveway and install a new driveway. Within a day, I had a call from the owner asking me for details. He went out and e-mailed me an estimate a day or two later. Thanks to the torrential downpours, the work couldn't be done immediately, but as soon as the weather cleared, I got an e-mail indicating they would be doing the work the next day. I was absolutely delighted with the way the work was performed. The driveway looks great, and I look forward to hiring Baumann's again for more landscaping work.
Description of Work: Excavated an area in the yard for a gravel driveway. Driveway was lined and filled with crushed bluestone.
