AZALEAS TO ZINNIAS

Landscaping, Pavers and Hardscaping, Lawn and Yard Work,

About us

Kyle Hodges, the owner and sole proprietor of Azaleas to Zinnias, has been affiliated with the company for nearly 15 years. Throughout those years he has developed a wide-based knowledge of everything from plants, plant and hardscape design, natural stonework, pavers and water features, just to name a few, through avenues not limited to hands-on and in-class training. He strives hard to incorporate our clients' wants and needs into designs, as well as educate and guide clients to choices best suited to their individual properties. His enthusiasm for developing long-term client relationships really shows. Richard Wike, the founder of Azlaeas to Zinnias, started the company in 1989 and now works as a consultant. We are experienced in all phases of garden design, installation, lighting, hardscapes, maintenance, and container plantings. No project is too small, and the attention to detail and customer wishes are evident in all our work. Succession of color of flowers, foliage and textures is an important feature that we incorporate to make our gardens unique. In addition, we like to form a collaborative relationship with a client that can last years through garden transitions and changes. We love what we do ...And it shows!

The crew did a good job overall. They answered my questions and offered me advice. When I had concerns about some aspects of the job, Kyle, the owner, came out and made the necessary adjustments himself.

Wow is our reaction to Kyle’s landscaping! The gardens he designed for us look amazing! Kyle really listened to what we wanted. It was impossible to take the picture inside our heads of the gardens we wanted and verbalize a description that made sense. I am sure to him it sounded like we wanted plants, shrubs and flowers; not a lot for a landscaper to draw from. We basically told him the colors we liked and that we wanted to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. We have a small yard and did not think he would want to bother with a small job but he gave no indication it was an issue. He was able to make the gardens a bit larger than we had envisioned. He drew up such amazing detailed plans that included so many different plants and flowers we had doubts everything would fit. They did and we are thrilled with the results!! We told Kyle it was as if he read our minds and designed the gardens accordingly. Realistically, we could never have envisioned gardens as beautiful as the ones he created. The mix of plants, shrubs, flowers, colors, textures, is amazing. We absolutely love our gardens. We are looking around our property to find space to fit another one. Kyle does amazing work. He is the first and only landscaper we will call for additional jobs.

Kyle was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. He helped us design our layout which included a firepit, patio, water feature and pergola. He also decided which plants/trees would work best in all areas around these features. He was always professional and we thoroughly enjoyed working with him and his staff. I would highly recommend A to Z landscaping!

Could not have asked for better. Kyle took my very vague scope of work and gave me exactly what I wanted. Installers were professional, polite and cleaned up the job site after themselves. All I needed to do was water the lawn. Would recommend highly.

Kyle was very pleasant to work with from start to finish. He was on time for the estimate appointment as well as on the installation date. He was quick to respond to any phone/text/emails throughout the process. I was very pleased with his landscaping plan and proposal for a small, but somewhat complicated job. He was on-site for a good portion of the day of installation with two workers, who were both very pleasant and completely focused on getting the work done. The finished area looks great and I have received many compliments from friends and neighbors (some of whom are interested in working with him on their own projects). I would definitely use Kyle for other projects and am happy to recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Landscaped a planting bed located between the rear driveways of two townhomes. Work included installation of two concrete pads for AC unit compressors and running drains for one downspout and two sump discharge pipes. Landscaping included a crape myrtle, 2 shrubs and multiple perennials.

I obtained a total of 3 estimates for the job and all were quite similar for the overall cost. Kyle and his team were professional throughout the process. The overall craftsmanship was very high. My only quibble would be that the joints between the stone pieces were not as narrow as might be ideal. The brick work in the backyard is very tight and appears durable. I would definitely recommend them to a friend.
Description of Work: 1) Removed and completely rebuilt stone porch (with brick risers) and the stone path leading up to it from the street, 2) pulled-up and redid 2 brick walkways in the backyard, 3) installed stone veneer over concrete steps in back yard, 4) touch-up work on other stone steps.

Kyle was always super responsive and professional. When he came out to do the estimate he had some great ideas and he also had a great price. Despite multiple scheduling delays (some specifically our fault and others because of the ridiculous amount of rain we had in May) Kyle remained open with his communication and he fit us in very soon after the rain stopped. The work is just gorgeous - our wall looks like it was never damaged at all and was always where it is now. The grading in the back is subtle and solves and should protect our home much better than the previous grading. He also glued our steps out back. We look forward to hiring Kyle and his team again - a terrific experience all around!!

I had Kyle out to give me an estimate on creating a play area from a playset. He was on time, very knowledgable, and professional. His crew showed up on time and completed the job. The work exceeded my expectations. When I did express my concern on one of the 6x6's they assured me they would return and correct it, which they did perfectly. I am was so pleased with the whole companies professionalism and pride in their work. I am already planning other projects with them and would highly recommend this company.

Very pleased with finished product. gardens surround the entire house and now make the place look fantastic. Team of workers were very professional and courteous. Kyle was great at listening to what we wanted and making it happen. They even sent one of the plantings back to distributor to wait for one that looked better for the spot. Will plan to use A to Z for future hardscaping project as well.

Stone wall rebuild: The crew disassembled the existing deteriorating stone wall which enclosed a Japanese maple and other plants. They dug a trench beneath where the new wall would be installed and installed 6" of CR6. Perforated pipe was installed behind where each wall would be and it was filled with 6" of #57 stone. The walls were then rebuilt with the addition of a pallet of matching Western Maryland stone. The downspout drain was extended under the wall with SCH 40 pipe with a pop-up drain. They seeded and strawed all disturbed areas and installed mulch inside of the stone wall which retained the Japanese maple and other plants and shrub. All of the wall is level and stable and looks great. I had gotten other estimates and they were all about the same, but I feel that no other contractor would have done as good a job. Front walk replacement: Removed concrete front walk which was deteriorating and hauled it away. Installed the proper multi-layer base and tamped it down. Installed the pavers in a pleasing "I" pattern with a contrasting boarder. Replaced existing concrete step with wall block and caps that matches the pavers. Installed polymeric sand, swept it in cracks and tamped it down. Reapplied sand, tamped it down and wet it down to activate it. They diverted two drain spouts by the walkout in the rear of the house. They also extended an existing garden boundary, removing the grass by undercutting with shovels and moved the existing stone boundary around the new perimeter. They seeded and strawed all disturbed areas and installed mulch around the pavers. They did such a good job on the wall rebuild that I didn't even get estimates from other contractors for the walk. Work crew: All of the work crew on both jobs were polite and were hard workers. They were glad to answer any questions and explain what they were doing. They showed up on time and did an excellent job of cleaning up the work site when the job was completed. Owner: Kyle Hodges responded to phone calls and emails promptly and answered all questions. He stopped by periodically to monitor the jobs. I felt that he did more than he had to do make sure that I was satisfied with the work that was being done.
Description of Work: The contractor has done two jobs for me: 1. Rebuilt existing stone wall in front of house that was falling apart because a previous contractor did a shoddy job. 2. Replaced concrete walkway in front of house with pavers including matching step to front landing.

Kyle, the president of the company first came out to do a site visit. Really great guy to work with. He listened to what I wanted to do, provided helpful guidance, and I came away with an understanding that this company has the depth of knowledge and professionalism that I was looking for. The fact that the president came out personally meant a great deal to me. I established and run a business with clients across the US and Canada. I understand the importance of not just excellent customer service, but the depth of expertise I need to convey to a client in order for the client to feel they're in good hands. That's what Kyle did for me on that initial site visit. While Kyle was working up a bid, I was doing research on the specific pressure treated product I wanted to use in order to maximize lifetime using direct burial. The vendor turned out to be close by, and it was clear that the products at Home Depot and Lowe's were definitely not the way to go. Culpepper Lumber in Virginia provided a lifetime warranty assuming that any field cuts would be coated with Copper Naphthanate. I then provided Kyle an understanding of the products to be used, and he worked with me through the entire process. There were in fact other companies besides Kyle's that did a site visit, and tried to convince me that what I wanted to do was not correct - one company wanted me to put in a very expensive concrete foundation, and another company did not want to excavate but rather wanted to put the shed up in the air 32 inches. The point is that I was a client with building experience and did extensive research on precisely what I wanted. Kyle went out of his way to work with me, and respected my background and what I wanted to accomplish - isn't this the relationship you truly want to have with a contractor? Next, the bid came back and it was the lowest of the bids by a couple of hundred dollars. Kyle also suggested putting in a drain at the low corner, which I didn't even consider - an excellent idea. On the day of the construction, Kyle personally came out with his team and supervised throughout the day. In fact he did the excavation, and it was pretty impressive to see how precisely he used the excavator to only excavate the designated area without disturbing the grass around it. I had a chance to talk to some of his staff, and clearly these were folks that took pride in the job, we're very knowledgeable, and worked together very effectively. One staffer even told me how this was a great job because they like to do hardscape work, but most of their jobs are softscape. I was exceedingly impressed with the finished product. Installing a 12 by 20 box on a significant slope and making sure that it is level and square takes significant skill. I personally measured the diagonals and found that the diagonals were within an eighth of an inch of each other. Pretty impressive. I was so happy with the results that I made sure Kyle knows we have a bunch of other projects for his company.
Description of Work: Installed a foundation for a 20 ft x 12 shed on a sloped grade with a 32-inch difference in grade across the shed footprint. I provided detailed information on placement, foundation design with pressure treated 6 x 6 timbers, assembly with timberlocks, and how the 32-inch difference would be met with a combination of build up at the low point with timbers, and excavation at the high point.

The provider was polite, courteous, and timely. We had an upcoming party at our house, and the provider insured and delivered it would be complete in time. I received about 10 quotes for the job, some twice as much, but the provider was the professional, and I felt comfortable with them. Installing the patio involved some damage to our neighbors yard. The provider made sure to repair the damage, and even repaired some areas that were a pre-existing condition.
Description of Work: The provider removed a previous paver patio, and installed a poured concrete patio. Additionally, the provider buried both my gutter, and sump line beneath the patio.

I am a completely satisfied customer and cannot even begin to describe how much better this company is than every other landscaping company that has done work for me or provided me with estimates. They installed a very large mulch pit filled with wood chips around our gigantic backyard playset with a border of 6x6s, and also did some minor excavation work and laid out Geotex cloth to prevent weed growth. Although our playset is gigantic, our yard is not, so this project presented a number of logistical challenges. Nevertheless, everything is absolutely perfect. Our playset is now useful after it rains instead of being a complete mess of mud, and I think at least one or two children avoided serious injury because of the cushioning from the wood chips. I am a perfectionist and not only did Kyle and his crew tolerate that, I got the impression that they are perfectionists as well. There were a number of issues that were difficult to make decisions about until the day of work, but they patiently went through the options with me and helped me make an informed decision. The entire crew was courteous, professional, and hard working. Although I was completely satisfied after the work was complete, a couple of touch-ups were necessary within a couple of months. Kyle did not hesitate to return and fix those issues to make sure I was completely satisfied. To top it off, I got estimates from some of Angie's List's top-ranked landscaping companies in Baltimore, and Azaleas to Zinnias was the most reasonable. I would not hesitate to use them again and would recommend them to anyone who asks.

I am so glad I decided to use this company! Kyle was very helpful from the start and came up with a project that incorporated what I needed with my budget constraints. My project did get pushed a day or two due to weather, but Kyle communicated everything to me so that I was knew exactly what the plan was going forward. Both Kyle and Matt (who I met when he was finishing up my walkway) were very friendly and made sure that everything was completed to my satisfaction and leaving the door open if I had any questions down the road. A huge thank you to both of them for doing such great work!

We'd used A to Z multiple times over the last few years. They opened and closed our yard in the fall and spring. The work is good, but the response time is horrendous. They are not good at responding to phone calls or emails. Jobs are routinely pushed off for weeks on end. I would probably not recommend A to Z for that reason.

Kyle and his entire crew did a fantastic job in creating the large outdoor entertaining space we wanted. We gave Kyle a basic idea of what we wanted and he came up with a fantastic design. He suggested great materials and used hidden mortar with all walls which looks great. The crew was always prompt and extremely polite. They were always happy to answer questions and make sure we were happy with the work. The hardscape guys were artists and really took their time with all the stone work. The team helped remove some other debris and old bushes which weren't included in the original proposal at no charge. They were also easy to work with when we wanted to add a few last minute items. Everything remained in budget with no surprises. The overall craftsmanship and finished work was top notch. We will definitely us A to Z in the future.

Kyle and his crew were very polite and friendly. Kyle definitely knows his stuff. We gave him some general guidelines, like color and ease of maintenance. He took measurements and returned with a plan and estimate. When scheduling the work his spam filter captured my e-mails, so after a couple of weeks of no communication, I got another estimate (hence the B for responsiveness). The 2nd estimate came in at almost 3 times the cost, and the plan was no where near as detailed as the one Kyle had come up with (and no measurements were taken). He eventually found my e-mails in his spam folder and contacted me. A few weeks later, and the work was complete. It looks 100x better. It has been over a month since the work was complete, and we haven't been invoiced yet; so I can't comment on how close to the estimate the actual cost is.
Description of Work: Estimated and designed the landscaping plan based on our input. Removed overgrown brush from the front and side of the house, and planted new or transplanted existing plants. Old plants were disposed of, and new mulch was laid.

The work they performed was excellent. I had them come out to remove poison ivy from part of my yard as I am highly allergic to it. Kyle even had his crew cut ivy vines from two of my trees as they would have eventually done some major damage if not killed them over time. I had some brush, branches and other bits of bushes that they hauled away for me as well. Scheduling with them was a bit of a struggle as it was clear they were very busy. Kyle did a good job of responding when he wasn't in the field. They should consider hiring someone just to work the office and field emails and calls. Overall the work they performed was excellent when they were finally able to come out. It is easy to understand why they are busy.

Owner Kyle promptly visited & followed with an online estimate, block product catalog & photos. There proposal was more thorough than a competitor's, especially with greater attention to drainage. He said upfront he was backed up with hardscape work but would schedule us between larger jobs. That worked for me since I was somewhat flexible. I followed up in about 30 days and Kyle scheduled my job. The crew of Mike, Rob & Nate were punctual, conscientious, & didn't rush the job. The craftsmanship was very good & the cleanup thorough. I asked them to save the sod they removed & they were happy to do so. The job was estimated to take one day but took a few hours longer. I appreciated that they returned the next morning to finish up rather than days later.

Kyle was very responsive with the estimate and the estimate was fair compared to others that I received. He was very communicative in saying that this was a very busy time of the season, and thus, the time between the estimate and when he could start the work was about 2 weeks. He was right on time: in two weeks he came out and did the work exactly as I requested. I am very happy with the work that he did.
Description of Work: Kyle and his team took out two small trees on the back-side of my house on a hill that also needed some erosion remediation. They regraded the hill and planted grass seed. And they trimmed two tall trees in my back yard. One tree in particular was tricky because it was right at the base of the hill.

A to Z did a phenomenal job on our new patio. First, Kyle was extremely courteous, flexible, and prompt when providing a quote. Once we chose them, they arrived when we had agreed upon, and the hardscape crew worked extremely hard every minute that they were on the project. Other than being rained out a couple of days, they were here continuously from start to finish, and the finished product was amazing! They seeded all the disturbed areas, and even over-seeded some of the lawn where the damage was negligible! They really went above and beyond in almost every category - they patched our concrete steps that the patio was built against, they cleared a planting bed adjacent to the patio, and they were extremely generous with the overseeing, all of which were not part of the original quote. I am sure I will use them again.

The owner showed up on time to give an estimate and the work crew also showed up on time. The owner and work crew were polite and responsive. The patio construction and shrub removal went well. The patio construction took two days. I had asked the owner about potential damage to a dogwood overhanging my driveway from any large trucks they might need and he said they would be careful and lift branches to clear the truck if necessary. However, I got home from work at the end of the first day to find the dogwood did have broken branches. I pointed them out to the work crew and asked them to trim the broken branches on the second day, which they did. I had also asked that the fill dirt placed behind the garage not be piled up against the wooden garage, but this did happen at one corner. I decided to regrade the area myself, rather than ask the work crew to come back out. When I went to regrade the dirt away from the garage I discovered a jagged rusty pipe still buried just below the surface of the fill dirt. The pipe could not be pulled out of the ground. I emailed the owner and he responded promptly, came out to investigate, apologized, and had the crew come back out and remove the pipe. I had been pleased overall with this company until I discovered they had tried to cover up rather than remove the pipe. it just made me wonder what else they did or didn't do that I couldn't see.
Description of Work: Cleared overgrown vegetation and debris from behind my garage, removed a large shrub growing next to the garage, built a small, 8' by 8' patio in my back yard using stone I provided, and used the dirt from the patio excavation to backfill the ground where the shrub had been and to fill and regrade behind the garage.
