AZALEAS TO ZINNIAS

Landscaping, Pavers and Hardscaping, Lawn and Yard Work,

About us

Kyle Hodges, the owner and sole proprietor of Azaleas to Zinnias, has been affiliated with the company for nearly 15 years. Throughout those years he has developed a wide-based knowledge of everything from plants, plant and hardscape design, natural stonework, pavers and water features, just to name a few, through avenues not limited to hands-on and in-class training. He strives hard to incorporate our clients' wants and needs into designs, as well as educate and guide clients to choices best suited to their individual properties. His enthusiasm for developing long-term client relationships really shows. Richard Wike, the founder of Azlaeas to Zinnias, started the company in 1989 and now works as a consultant. We are experienced in all phases of garden design, installation, lighting, hardscapes, maintenance, and container plantings. No project is too small, and the attention to detail and customer wishes are evident in all our work. Succession of color of flowers, foliage and textures is an important feature that we incorporate to make our gardens unique. In addition, we like to form a collaborative relationship with a client that can last years through garden transitions and changes. We love what we do ...And it shows!

We were very very satisfied. They arrived when scheduled and did all the work. We were very pleased with the quality of the work they did. The plants they chose look very nice and healthy. They worked with us to pick out new shrubs and trees and gave us the information and time we needed to approve the choices. They worked with us to find a tree species that fit our taste and preference.
Description of Work: Cleaned up all flower beds (about 6 total), removed large tree and stump, planted new tree, planted shrubs in flower beds, removed vines from trees.

I had just had an addition built on the back of my house, so the backyard was a mess and we had water leaking into the basement in heavy rain. We are hoping to get a dog in the future, so wanted a nice, thick lawn and were considering zoysia grass. Some people don't like zoysia because it is yellow from October to May, but we were impressed by how thick it looked and how well it seemed to hold up. Drainage: Kyle found signs of water runoff, and suggested installing a box drain to take the water away from the house and let it exit at the front of our yard where it wouldn't bother the basement. It works great-- we've had many heavy rains since the work was completed, and our basement is dry. Lawn restoration: This went way beyond my expectations: Kyle bought some zoysia plugs to scatter throughout the existing lawn (they will spread and take over within a few years), but also brought over a large amount of zoysia turf and installed it near the house and around the box drain. Wow, instant lawn! This knocked my socks off-- it was way better than what I thought I was getting. The day of the job: Very impressive-- there must have been 6 or 7 guys over here, very courteous and working hard to do the job. The only B I'm giving is in responsiveness. I did have to contact Kyle several times before he came back to do the fertilization (about four weeks later). He was very apologetic, and ended up doing some extra spraying when he did come to fertilize. In all, tremendous job-- I would not hesitate to call them again.
Description of Work: Drainage: Build up area on right side of house, install one box drain and run 4" PVC pipe to drain water to the front corner of the property and exit in a pop-up drain. Lay river rock around new drain to help prevent further runoff. Lawn restoration: Aerate back and side yard multiple times. Top dress back lawn to amend planting area. Install 2700 zoysia plugs at approximately 3 per square foot. Scatter grass seed, and return later to apply one round of fertilizer to new zoysia plugs.

I called A to Z after finding them on Angie's List and left a voicemail. I received a call back that evening and we set up a date a few days later for them to come out to our home and give me a quote for the work. I explained that I wanted the job to be done as a surprise for my husband for Father's Day, and that I wanted the quote to be done while he was at work. The quote was supposed to be done on Thursday, but I received a call on Friday saying that they weren't able to get to the house on Thursday and they were there now. We talked about a few details and then I was told that I would receive a quote in writing via email. Several days passed and I called again to follow up and find out when I could expect a quote. It was sent the following evening. It came in about $100 over the other quote that I received, but the other quote did not include the gravel that we had spread, and I liked that A to Z guaranteed their plants and their work for one year. I also liked that they gave an Angie's List discount. I wrote back and agreed to the price and we set a date for the next week for the work to be completed. That day came and no one showed up. When I called to follow up, the gentleman explained that they were swamped and a truck had broken down and they couldn't come that day. I wondered if I would have been notified if I hadn't called myself. They did show up the next day and complete the work. Several weeks went by and I never received an invoice for the work. I worried that something had been lost or that we had slipped through the cracks and that they would report us to collections for not paying. I emailed and was told they had had some problems with their billing and they would send another one. They did and it arrived a few days later. Because of the complete lack of responsiveness and reliability I would not use A to Z again. I do think the work they did was of nice quality, but I'm sure plenty of companies could have done that.
Description of Work: I hired A to Z to weed and mulch two existing beds and to rip out one overgrown bed and replant six shrubs. They also spread white gravel in a small area between my shed and fence to finish out where my husband had already started placing gravel.

Response from AZALEAS TO ZINNIAS
The client gave us several time restraints which we had to adhere to (when the estimate could be done, when the work must be completed. Unfortunately, the truck broke down (the client was in the Columbia area, we are in Towson) and she was not informed as soon as we would have liked. Still, we got the job done to their satisfaction and on time, but apparently, that was not responsive enough for them. This has not happened to us before and we apologized to the client. We have been in business for 23 years with many many reccomendations! Patty Wike - Co-owner. and

Their estimate price was higher than some of the others. We didn’t go with them. The gentleman that came by was really nice and listened to everything I needed. He was pretty prompt in getting back with the estimate.
Description of Work: I used Azaleas to Zinnias in the beginning of May for an estimate on landscaping. They presented their estimate through email. They came by and took a look around. Then, they went home and sent me an email a couple of days later on the cost.

Kyle from A to Z was very responsive and came within a week to talk with me about ideas to improve the appearance of the front of our house. His quote was very similar to two others I had obtained, and just slightly lower. A to Z had just done some work for a friend, and she was very pleased, so I went with this company. The original price for the proposed design was more than I wanted to spend. Kyle worked with me through several iterations to get the most for what I could spend. I was under a time crunch because I had out of town guests coming for a big family event at my home. A to Z really came through under a very short timeframe when bad weather threw them off their schedule. Kyle's creative solution to the rocks at the end of the porch looks amazing. Many houses in my neighborhood have this feature of a slab porch, and then a fall off due to the natural topography that in our case the previous owners had lined with sharp edged "manufactured" white rocks. Very tacky. Kyle suggested replacing the rocks with river rock (very smooth with many colors) and two large boulders, so that it looks like this is a planned feature of the garden. This meant I could stop considering extending the porch - with all of the additional costs associated. It looks great. A to Z got the main pieces of the work done before my event, and then came back the next week to finish up. The crew was hardworking and efficient, and the end results definitely surpassed my expectations.
Description of Work: Landscape design for front of house. Removal of very old shrubs. New stone veneer mortared to cement slab porch. Stone paver walkway added from driveway to front entrance. Fieldstone wall crafted from 1" to about 10" to support and define a new raised bed on a slope at front of house. Shrubs and perennials planted and new beds mulched. Unattractive manufactured stone at end of the porch replaced with river rock and two large boulders. Several stumps and two overgrown tree sized bushes removed.

"Absolutely Spectacularly" as one of our neighbors commented. Kyle and crew used the best materials, best construction, design and planting techniques. They were on time, on budget. They had superb email contact; for example, I needed to rework on railing design and I was emailed annotated photo's. Daily cleaning was also outstanding and every crew member is outstanding too. They will be building a baseball court for us.
Description of Work: AZALEAS TO ZINNIAS replaced old garden beds shared with landscaping logs with beautiful stone work and revitalized, deer-proof paintings. They also mirrored this stonework with new front steps, front walk and back patio. All this was done in summer 2011; it was also done in summer 2008.

I spend about $500, but they did a lot of work. They charge by the hour I believe and they spend all day doing work. They gave me very good advice when my tree got smushed and we saved the tree. I would tell other members that for the work they do, their prices are very reasonable and they are very thorough. I am usually at work when they come and do the work.

At the end of the summer (Maryland had a severely hot and dry summer), both Japanese Hollies were totally dead, the ferns that were replanted in May had mostly died, and one of the boxwoods had a dead spot. My wife e-mailed Azaleas to Zinnias to ask for their help and the only response we got was "Water, Water, Water", attributing the problems to the hot weather and our lack of watering. While we could accept that perhaps we did not water enough, we expected a better response such as "we will come out to look at your plants and perhaps we will give you a good price on replacing the plants" but nothing!!! My wife believes that the one Holly was dying the first year and probably should have been replaced then under our 1 year warranty, and also that the ferns and some of the other plants that have sinced died were a poor suggestion for the front of our house. We have since had another company replace the Hollies with another variety of Holly and are in the process of asking them for some suggestions for the rest of the area in front of the house.
Description of Work: In May 2009, provided landscaping in front of house. Planted to 2 Steads Japanese Holly, 6 Small Gem Boxwoods, 12 ever green ferns, 9 Lenten Rose amd mulched. Within one year, we asked contractor to return a to replace some plants that had died and and asked him to examined one of the Japanese Holly that had a dead spot in it. Contractor returned on 5/08/2010 and planted 5-8 new ferns at no cost and said that we should monitor the Japanese Holly.

We are sorry to hear that this client feels this way. As he said- We did replace the plants once but with the extreme summer (as the client admitted) it was important that watering be often and consistent which we told them... We lost very few plants this past summer because our clients watered properly. Please see our other reviews. PattyWike, Azaleas to Zinnias

Project was handled great by Kyle from beginning to end. They had to remove a lot of old rock from the area during the prep work.... perhaps more than they thought. But Kyle never complained. They installed the cut bluestone with a thoughtful pattern and put a beautiful hand cut sun burst in front of our french doors. We requested the joints not be mortared but instead filled with polymeric sand. We also requested tight joints for an older look. They also put a brick veneer on the slightly visible wall under the bluestone patio (the patio is raised 1 step off the ground). Kyle helped us find brick and mortar color to match our old brick home. We had a few concerns during the job with some of the early block work, but Kyle was quick to respond and take care of it. We had a lot of weather delays and some materials delays... Kyle was always letting me know updates! They did a beautiful job. We highly recommend Kyle and his team!

The job was planned for the end of the week. Kyle and the crew arrivedby 0830, were wonderfully organized laying out their tools by job planned, and to be able to account for all at the end of the day. There were 4 in the AM and another 4 arrived for the afternoon to assist with the drainage ditch digging, and soil moving via wheelbarrows. The newly seeded area was covered lightly with straw and a rollout netting cover which they anchored with push pins. They were efficient, courteous, and very neat, cleaning up after themselves. Loriope under the redbud was dug up and moved to another area of the yard at my request. They were done by the end of the day. The regrading has had the test of multiple rains since and the water has been redirected to either side of the house and what flows into the drainage box is also directed to the side. No more soggy areas or flow down the outside stairwell. The newly seeded lawn area is lovely.
Description of Work: I called Azaleas to Zinnias to set up an onsite appointment to evaluate regrading my backyard to address a drainage problem as well as to remove two trees. Kyle Hodges was able to come within the week. Along with regrading the backyard, Kyle recommended a box drainage system with drainage piping laid to catch and redirect waterflow. The two trees, one a tall pine adjacent to fencing and the other a dying redbud would be removed with their stumps dug out. Excess soil from the grading was to be placed along the side of the house where the ground level was depressed. A large central oval area was to be reseeded for lawn.

Excellent experience. Called to set up time for an estimate, and had some challenges due to time constraints. The owner was very diligent in follow up to figure out a good time. Met with their rep, who was very professional and knowledgable to discuss and address needs/issues. Rep took photos of the yard to detail work to be done and create estimate. That evening received verbal estimate over the phone, and written estimate came in the mail soon after that. (I had received other estimates(some lower, some higher) but these folks knowledge and professionalism won my business.) Crew was extremely professional and well mannered. The work was very well done, and the crew did a great job. These folks went above and beyond-HIGHLY recommend!

They did great. They removed lots and lots of ivy from all round and on the house and cut down a bush that had grown into a tree. They cut back the two bushes I had in front of my house so I could see if I wanted to keep them or replace them. They also cut back the growth behind our fence.
Description of Work: My grounds around my house were greatly overgrown. The workmen came at 8:00 a.m. when I was home. I talked with the man in charge to make sure we were on the same page for what was to be done. A little later I went to work. When I came home they were gone and so was all the overgrowth. At first I looked around and saw everything was fine. The next day I was looking over the grounds and realized the ground was so clear of growth that it looked like someone had sucked the growth up with a machine. It was really clear of everything. You would have never know they were there. Also, on this day the temperature climbed to 102!

Best word to describe work: Professional. Richard came in to give me an estimate on work. Then send landscaper in for plant recommendations. Wall built first. Richard checked back on quality of work. Then a group of like five men showed up and did the entire landscaping job in ONE day. Richard again checked back. I pointed out that one of the capstones on the wall was loose and that some of the pavers hadnt been filled in with bluestone. A guy came back the next day and fixed everything. I got stern lecture from Richard about watering the sod every day for two weeks. and he warned me he'd be back to check :) Outstanding job and I'll never use anybody else again. very professional. I LOVE MY NEW FRONT YARD. Envy of my neighborhood
Description of Work: Previous landscaper came in killed a good chunk of my front yard and the neighbors from where he rolled a wheelbarrow over roundup and over the edge of the neighbors yard. Built a crappy wall. AZ came in and redid my front yard fixing the previous landscaping disaster and beautifying my entire front yard. Stone wall put in on side, walkway reset with bluestone and lined with boxwood. Sod put down in dead area courtesy of previous landscaper. Other plants added to an expanded bed. Bed cleanup and mulch.

this has been a great company to work with. we started in 2008. they helped create a plan, broken down into increments, to completely re do my entire yard, front and back. they took into account my lack of knowlege and desire to do yardwork, and have created a beautiful and easy lawn/yard. they are letting me do the work in stages as i get the money. they coach me along and accept my desires and input. they have been great to work with, even through personnel changes. they have planted bushes, flowers, trees, moved plantings, erected stone walls, weeded, mulched, put in privacy screens, and more. they are always pleasant and polite! thanks to angie's list i found them.
