We hired Affordable movers to move us from our two bedroom apartment to a townhouse 1 mile down the street. The movers provided an estimate of $375 based on the items we provided and an estimated number of boxes. On the day of the move they were scheduled to arrive at 2pm. They called at approximately 1:30 to say they were running late and that they would be at our address at about 4pm. They called at 3:30 to say they would be later than 4:30. This continued throughout the evening until they arrived at 9pm. Upon arrival they inventoried our belongings and provided a cost of over double the estimate. The managing mover said it was because we had double the number of boxes in our estimate. We stated that we would not pay double the price and that we were extremely disappointed that they were 7 hours late. The managing mover said a previous move that day lasted much longer than they had anticipated. We showed them the estimate e-mailed to us and said we wanted this moved for the agreed price and suggested they should either offer a discount or move the rest of the boxes because they were 7 hours late. They would do neither. We had to pick out the boxes we wanted them to move. During the move they broke our office desk, damaged a bedroom door and left a piece of our bed frame on the front lawn, which we didn't see until the next day because it was midnight when they finished. Before the move we signed a document stating that if they broke an item we would be reimbursed $50. We did receive the $50 because of the broken desk, but of course the desk is worth a good deal more than that. I would highly recommend that you do not use this company. If you do, request that a representative come to your property and provide the estimate. A 1' x 1' box is treated the same as 5' x 10' box, so try to box your items into as large a container as possible.

They gave me one price before the move, but after they moved my stuff, the price doubled. That was irritating, but they were still cheaper than the other guys' estimates. They were also late - they were supposed to be there in the morning and they didn't show up until 5pm.

I'd like to alert people to some things you may not be aware of when you get your initial quote. Generally, the company was fine with the exception of the bullet points I have below. I just caution you to read the contract in detail. Pros: The movers moved quickly. They were understanding of my issues with public storage and worked with me to get my stuff into storage. The movers also came within the timeframe projected. HOWEVER, #1: You will get charged additional fees for "non standard' disassembly. Apparently my high dining room table was a "non - standard" disassembly. #2: Be careful there is no dog poo in the area. The movers tracked dog poo into the house. When I spoke up to 2 of the movers about it, one of them denied he tracked it in and the other ignored me. No one else was told or even apologized. I had to go back to my house to clean the carpets the next day. #3: You'll have to initial that if you cause any delay in moving that you will be charged $100 per hour. I didn't realize I accepted that provision since I saw the actual contract the morning of the move. The quote states that you will not be charged hourly but a flat rate. When I emailed the customer service person, she advised that I initialed and accepted the additional charges and it was a delay I caused. I advised her that the terminology is vague and should include some sort of time frame. How do you know when a delay is a delay? If I got the issue figured out in 15 minutes, should I be subject to the additional fee? I accept that I caused the delay, however I think you should be fully aware of what your signing up to within the quote rather than the day that you move. So please be aware that you will be charged extra if you delay their system. Get the contract up front. #4: Inspect your house completely. The movers left a television, and I was refunded $5 for them not moving it (out of $510 bill).

I contacted this company approximately two weeks ago to move a pool table. I explained the type and size of the table when I requested the quote. I explained that it needed to be disassembled and reassembled. The quote I recieved was for $195 and was written to include disassembly and reassembly. The day before the scheduled move I recieved a call with an arrival time between 2-4pm which was scheduled yesterday. At 1:30 I recieved a call that the earliest they could arrive was 4:30. This really interfered with my plans so I rescheduled for the next morning between 8-9am. They called at 8 saying that they were fueling up and should arrive around 9. They arrived at 8:45 and tried to pick up the table without disassembling it. We explained it had to be taken apart. The crew member said that wasn't included. He clearly had no idea about moving a 3-piece pool table consisted of. He stepped out to call his boss, came back and told me it would cost $400. I asked to speak with the supervisor. He accused me of lying about the pool table. Never apologized for the inconvenience, refused to let me finish a sentence, threatened to have the movers leave if "I didn't like it." I told him to have them leave because there was nothing "affordable" about $400. He told me to "go f*** off" and then said "suck my d***." I was appalled that anyone would say that to me, especially a business owner. The owners of the table were in complete shock at what happened. I called the police but they wouldn't do anything about it. I reported him to the Better Business Bureau (which gives him an A+ rating) and he completely lied about what happened and he wasn't even present at the time the delivery men showed up. They did not move my pool table. They couldn't even find the bolts to take it apart. John Griffin, the ower, has a very long criminal record (so I found out after this). I encourage anyone who has used this company to file a complaint with BBB so they can have an accurate understanding of who they are giving an A+ rating to.
Description of Work: I did not end up having them move my pool table. They showed up after the second scheduled time. I included a cost of $10 above for my wasted gas.

We called for a quote and provided a detailed inventory of the furniture in every room and what would be involved in moving the furniture. The quote we were given was $550. As you can see, the price we were paid was almost twice the price. The morning started with a call at 7:30 a.m. saying they had to fuel up the trucks and will be there in an hour. They were originally scheduled to arrive at 8:00 a.m. Instead they arrived around 9:30 a.m. The movers were less than professional in attitude. When we met them at the first stop, they informed us that they had two more moves that day--one between noon and two and one between two and four. There were four movers sent to do the job. At the second stop, they insist on going upstairs first for an inventory. All trash bags and small duffel bags counted the same as a large moving box. After which, they had to go make a call to his boss. Due to 30 extra bags and a walk they decided was longer than 300ft, they decided to increase the price to more than twice the quoted but made a deal and dropped it down to $995. At that point, we were stuck with the company especially since they already had the dining set they picked up at the first stop. They did not take all of the bags that they charged us extra. They were there so long that the walk through was rushed. The workers took several breaks. It took four hours to move items out of the apartment. They seemed to at a slow speed yet were not taking precautions. They did not bring any packing materials up to the apartment. There were some pads added outside before putting into the truck. Fortunately, we knew from experience to have rolls of tape available. The televisions were no wrapped in pads or boxed as promised. Fortunately, none broke. Yet one of the dining room chairs had a hole in the back, a suitcase was broken at the bottom and a bookcase is now missing a stabilizing support on the bottom of the leg and does not stand up straight. The bed was put together in a rush with one support left unattached under the bed and another support found in the kitchen trash can. While I was putting together the shelves in a bookcase before they left, I realized that pegs were missing. One of the guys had put them in his pocket and had forgotten to put them back in when it was brought into the house until I asked about them. It took an extra 30 mins as the crew had to wait as the screws for the bed were left at the original apartment, and I had to go back and get them. At 4 p.m., the crew finished this job. Needless to say, we were highly disappointed in the service provided and would not recommend using this company. It was pretty indicative when after the move was completed, we never heard back from the company following up on the moving experience.

Response from Affordable Movers LLC.
As stated to the Customer at the time of the estimate, he was provided a price of $530.00 for the items on his list. When the movers arrived and took an inventory of everything that he wanted to go, they came up with 2 Footboards, 4 Lamps, 1 extra TV, 38 bags, 4 Chairs, and 2 racks. He was also charged for the disassemble and reassemble of the bed which when taken apart, our movers showed him that the pieces underneath were not bolted down to begin with. When the damage to the chair was brought to his attentions he was offered our insurance which is 0.60 Cents per pound per article or he could turn it into his homeowner's Insurance. He opted to turn it into the homeowner's and signed the contract stating so. A few days after the mover the Customer contacted John and told him he was not sastified with the way the move went. John went over the contract with the Customer and actually realized he was charged much less for the extra items and walk. Still being dissatisfied John then offered to reimburse him by check in the amount of $200.00 which was mailed out the very next day. Also told the Customer that when his homeowners contacted us that we would not let them know that we had already given him a reimbursement check. We always go through with all of our customers that in order to give them the most accurate quote we would need an accurate list. It is explained that boxes are considered boxes, bags or totes. Our estimates that are sent to all of our customers explain our disassembly and reassembly charges and the possibility of any other charges such as distance that would be inccured during the move. We do not in anyway try to have hidden charges we are honest with all of our customers and we try to do our best to make everyone happy.

It went from bad to worse. Wouldn't ever use this company again. UPDATED SEPTEMBER 13, 2012: Just wanted to follow-up to my review. John called us on Sunday morning, 9/2, regarding the review we wrote about our moving experience with Affordable Movers. After talking to my husband and hearing all the problems (we were charged more than twice what the quote). John agreed the cost was excessive and he would send us a check for $300.00 which would put the moving cost in a more appropriate price range.Well, it is now 9/13 and we haven't received a check (or a letter or a call).
Description of Work: John was very good about helping us set up the move and didn't require a deposit. We had to postpone the move twice due to problems in closing. John was great and was very helpful in rescheduling. The day of the move the drivers called to set up a time to meet them at the storage unit. They were there a few minutes early. While they were polite we were immediately hit with a price that was more than twice as much as John quoted us. We were told $415 for a 10 x 20 storage unit. The driver told us John grossly underestimated the cost and we had to pay $895. Since they were holding all the cards we didn't have much choice but to acccept 'to pay up' or not get our items moved. They were quick. They were also sloppy. We belive they crushed the bottom of our TV cabinet and broke the door on a chest. They did dropp many boxes and one contained Christimas ornaments that were crushed in spite of being carefully packed. They stacked boxes upside down even though all boxes were carefully marked. They stacked heavy boxes on top of boxes marked 'fragile'. They had a argument at the truck while unloading and we could hear them on the 2nd floor and their language wasn't appropriate for 'professionals'. They tried to 'shove' our couch through the door and broke a piece off of one leg and marred the door frame. We wouldn't use Affordable Movers again due to the poor service and last minute price gouging. We would also advise others not to use this business for moving. UPDATED SEPTEMBER 13, 2012: moving

We scheduled a moving appointment for a time window of between 12 and 2 for March 1st. Come moving day we were ready to go, waiting for them to show. At about 1:30, they called to say that their previous job was bigger than anticipated and they would be a little late. They were very apologetic and I said it was fine, as we had all afternoon to get the move done. 4:00 came around with no word from them so I called the driver and didn't get an answer. I called the main office and after some phone tag (blamed on the lack of service in the area the movers were in), I received a call from the driver who assured me that they would be there at 5:30-6:00 "at the latest." I was understanding still, and voiced my concern about having to do the move in the dark and that city moves can be tricky and annoying (old houses with small doors so furniture has to come through windows and street parking makes for tight walking spaces from the truck to the house). Again, he assured me that the job would be done. 6:00 came and went and at 6:30 my husband called the driver who said he was just south of D.C. (about 90 minutes away from us in best of traffic circumstances) and he would be here at 8:00. At this point he said he would be calling the manager to figure something else out. I then called the manager and told him that 6 hours late and doing a 4 hour move at night was totally unacceptable and we needed to reschedule for the next day. The earliest that he said they could get us in was 5 days later "because this is the busiest time of the month." I reminded him that I had booked a month previously to make sure we were moved and they needed to take care of this immediately. I also informed him that not only did we pay to board our dog for the day to keep him out of the way, but that we now would have to pay to stay in our old house per day until we were moved out. He told me that there were 4 men in the truck coming to do our move and it would be fast and done tonight if I was still willing to keep the appointment. Angrily I agreed to have them come at 8:00, fearing no other moving company would be able to get us in the next day due to the time of the month. I said I would be expecting them AT EIGHT O'CLOCK. 8:00 and no movers. We called the driver to see where he was and he told us he just got on 97 and would be at our house in an hour. At that point we hung up and called Starving Students movers and they booked us for the next day. We called the manager after booking with the other company to tell them that we would not be needing their services any longer. He tried to talk my husband out of cancelling assuring him that the movers "were close by, just down the street" and they are dedicated to getting us moved tonight. My husband informed the manager that they were NOT close by, but an hour (if even that was true) away and he knew this because he spoke with the driver minutes before. Needless to say, we fired them and were successfully moved the next day with Starving Students. What bothers me the most about this situation besides them being 7 hours late (probably would have been longer), is that they knew there was no way they were going to make it to Baltimore by 5:30, let alone 2:00. This company is guilty of poor scheduling, dishonesty about arrival times, and blatant lying about the drivers whereabouts. Thanks to them we had to pay an extra day in our rented house, board our dog again and my husband took a day off work for nothing. I would never trust this company to do a move again.
