Thank you for allowing us to serve you. We enjoyed doing a complete remodeling of your first floor. Upon personally meeting with you for the final inspection, you were extremely happy with everything with the exception of the painting of one of the rooms. I offered to have it repainted, and you preferred to have money compensation of which you and I agreed to. Please remember you have our 5 year free labor warranty. Please let me know if you need any type of service in the future. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President

Description of Work: AES replaced a back deck to our home. Price was higher than others due to expected quality of work which turned out was well below expectations. Had to have the siding come out and fix the damage they caused and ended up paying an additional $3000 to another contractor to cover mistakes. AES's motto is "If you are not happy, we are not done." Well it just got to point we did not want them to do any more work because each time they came out, things got worse. Cut our losses and learned a valuable lesson.

Response from AES Builder & Home Improvements
This is an unfortunate event. I personally was involved with this customer and event. I will state the facts of the issue: After pulling a permit with the county, we constructed a Screen in Deck/Porch. In removing some of the siding in order to construct the roof, indeed some of the siding got damaged, which is not uncommon when removing siding that has already been installed. Unfortunately, the siding they had installed was a exclusive product that was installed by anther company and the manufacture would only sell the product to that company. I contacted the president of the company and made arrangements for them to replace the siding for the customer, and AES reimbursed the customer for the cost. The work was completed and passed all inspections. I personally met the homeowners on site and made sure they were happy when we completed the work. On October 17, 2013 the customer called for service in reference to a piece of siding coming loose from the side gable. On October 23, 2013, we repaired the siding and completed the service the same day. We have not received any further request from this customer since October 23, 2013. Please continue to read other AES reviews and you will discover we do outstanding work. Last year 62% of our business was from previous customers and referrals from previous customers. In the past 3 years we have received 15 Angie's List Super Service Awards for outstanding work. Our goal is to always make our customers happy and to become returning clients. Thank you for taking the time to read this so you can make a educated evaluation of AES. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President

Description of Work: I needed the windows in the house and one of the patio doors replaced. I had a special color requirement from the homeowners association which increased the price. | |The salesperson was not high pressure - there was no special deal only good for the next hour. He answered follow on questions promptly. | |The installer originally said it would take 2-3 days. They were able to finish the work in one day with a crew of 3. They showed up on time, worked hard all day, and cleaned up the inside and outside. They replaced the rotting wood in the existing sills, insulated the new windows, and replaced the outside trim with no maintenance material. | |I am very happy with the new windows. We'll see if my energy bills are better this year.

Description of Work: Wanted an estimate on widening a powder room door and removal and installation of stair and hand rails. The gentleman who called was very courteous but indicated job was too small for them. He mentioned a handyman nearby but I questioned whether or not opening a wall and moving electrical to accommodate a wider door at the powder room would be within their realm of expertise. He checked and determined it is not. At that, the gentleman and I discussed the project further as he originally thought the job was much smaller. After talking, he thought that AES might be able to do it but not for a couple of months. I mentioned that could be ok because I had to submit all of the estimates to a long term care insurer for review because they would reimburse me after I have the work done and pay for it. The gentlemen then mentioned that they do not usually deal with insurance companies/insurance deals so he'd have to talk to Mr. Munson first. I explained that the insurance was not homeowners insurance but a form of medical insurance and that they (AES) would not be involved with the insurance company at all--their contract and payment would be directly with me. He said he understood and he would get back to me. He did call me the same evening and advised they would give me an estimate but because of the insurance company, I would have to pay $150.00 for an estimate!!!! So in other words, even though the insurer will not decide who I use or how much I pay and the contract and payment are solely with me, I have to pay AES for what they give any other homeowner for free. In fairness they did say they would take it off the cost if I ultimately hire them but still... Obviously, I gave them a resounding no. Not sure but seems like they just didn't want to bother. Shame--they had very good reviews of their actual work so they would have gotten serious consideration for this work and several other projects I have on my list.

I appreciate you considering us. Please understand we have to pay someone to come out to price up work and give a written estimate. Therefore, we do charge $175.00 on insurance estimates of any type, if not, we would become insurance estimators for free work to the insurance companies. If you select our company to do your work, we credit the $175.00 back into your contact. I'm sorry you do not see value in providing this type of service. I've been doing this for 25 years and most clients understand there is a cost involved. Angie's list members, Please continue reading below and you will discover our raving reviews on our work. Thank you for taking the time to read and give a fair evaluation of our services. We have earned 15 Angie's list Super Service Awards, and give a Five Year Free Labor Warranty on all our work, even thought the State of Maryland on requires one year. they didn't install 2 pieces of trim. But when we called, they came right out the next day.
Description of Work: AES installed new gutters, downspouts and decorative vinyl trim on our house. A prior contractor, whom we hired because he was inexpensive, had botched the trim work on our house. It made me sick every time I walked thru the front door. David Hill came out and discussed the job. He discouraged us from replacing trim work and vinyl that was in good shape. He only recommended upgrading some poorly wrapped trim work. He saved us loads of money. We are very happy with the finished product!

Over all these projects I have been impressed with the quality of the work that has been done and also the individual craftsmen doing the work. They were on time, cleaned up each day and made some small refinements, as I requested. I was impressed especially with the way the work was done every day until completion and not hit or miss and dragged out. Debris was hauled away every day. The workmen were all courteous and polite. I have recommended this company to friends and neighbors and they have proven their worth to me. It's obvious to anyone that the work I had done was top grade and the results, beautiful, yet practical.
Description of Work: I have just concluded 4 separate projects for home upgrades/remodeling with AES Builder and Home Improvements, Inc. and I have one more project planned. David Hill was a great help to me in providing product information, designing, pricing and following up on the plans and service. The first project was a remodeling and upgrade project for my kitchen and two bathrooms. The workmen were very careful moving my new kitchen appliances to begin their work. All the tile in the kitchen, hallway and atrium entrance was removed. A new wood sub-floor was put down and then new Duraceramic tile was expertly put down. The counter tops were replaced, with a new sink, pull-down duel spray faucet installed, new kitchen lighting and some cabinet re-furbishing was done. The bathroom flooring, sinks and faucets were replaced. The second project was installing new carpeting in the dining room, living room, one stairway, hallway and three bedrooms. Very good job with this installation. The workmen replaced closet doors and vacuumed up loose carpet fuzz. The third project was to replace a segment of an outside concrete walk-way and replace three outside concrete steps. Actually, three steps were installed to replace two steps with a top very high step. A concrete footing was done as a first step to prevent future sinking of the steps. The fourth project was to re-carpet the entire lower level (family room, stair way, office area and bedroom) of the town home. Again a perfect installation was done. The carpeting throughout is a light neutral color, is stain resistant and easy to keep clean. The last project I have planned is to have the lower level re-painted. Then I will have a brand new home!

I am a very satisfied AES customer and can attest to the value of their 5 year warranty. This is a serious benefit to consumers and should be considered as part of the decision process when selecting a contractor. I have firsthand experience with this benefit. In 2010, slightly past the 5 year warranty period of my bathroom projects, a plumbing problem developed in my downstairs bathroom. In all honesty, I wasn't certain it was an AES issue or that they would be willing to deal with it. Nevertheless, I called anyway. Tim Munson called me back and, after I explained what I had, he wasn't certain it was his issue either. But, despite that, he went ahead and sent one of his men out to take care of it, which he did and at no cost to me. Now that is true customer service and why AES is company well worth considering.
Description of Work: I have used AES for several home improvement projects since 2005. The most recent one was completed in October of 2010 and consisted of adding a proper roof to my prefabricated sunroom, an addition done in 2001 by a previous company. The salesman knows his stuff and came up with an excellent solution for this roof, which had some complicating factors. The job started on time and the two men who did the work were extremely professional and were dealyed only one or two days due to weather. This roof has provided me much needed additional insulation to this sunroom, which I use year round. In 2005, I contracted AES to add a full bath to my finished basement area as well as a complete gut and remodel of my main bathroom. The downstairs bathroom was quite an undertaking, requiring the installation of an ejection pump, new plumbing and electrical work. The main bath required breaking through an exterior concrete block wall to gain access to a space that was then incorporated into the bathroom. The lead person on this job is an excellent craftsman, very dedicated, always polite and friendly. I gave him the key to my house, since I was away at work, and I had no reservations about doing that. These two bathroom projects were extensinve, yet they were finished with complete satisfaction on my part. I just signed a contract with AES to have the main roof on my house replaced, so you could say that I am one very satisfied AES customer. As to project costs, AES compares favorably, at least in my experience, to other companies I've used in the past for other projects on my almost 60 year old home. They're not the most expensive nor the least.

I don’t remember the amount I spent. I just remember that we had to pay a deposit and then there was a mid way payment and then a final payment. They were prompt. They were over priced. They sent just one guy to do all the work and he was wonderful. As a matter of fact we have some other small handyman type of projects that we want done and we are going to contact him directly rather than going through the company with all their middlemen and staff. I would not use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used AES Builder & Home Improvements. I last used their services about a year ago. It was a little home improvement project. We had enclosing the sump pump in the basement with a wall and a door, some outside lights put up, some motion detector lights put up and some more things which I can’t remember right now. There were about five or six little projects like that. It was nothing huge and no major situation. He replaced the screening on the screening porch and replaced the door on the porch.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you on two separate occassions. In 2006 we did three bathrooms and in 2010 we did a list of miscellaneous jobs including installing 3 skylights. Thank you for the great comments and grades you have given to our carpenters on both occasions. Our workers are given bonuses based on the grades they receive from our customers. As you know we use craftsmen and we pay them very well for doing great work. I have done a study on the home improvement market and we provide great work and service at a fair market value. We are not the cheapest guys in town and we also are not the most expensive guys in town, however we provide a high quality product, great service and stand behind our motto: When we're done you'll be happy, if you're not happy we're not done. We also stand behind our work by giving you a five year free labor warranty on all our work even when the state of Maryland only requires one year. I have been in business for over 21 years and have made a commitment to honesty and integrity giving our customers the very best. Last year AES did 1.6 million in repeat and referral business, as homeowners are coming back because of our commitment to good work and taking care of our customers. Again I thank you for doing business with us and hope we can help you with any further major projects. Tim Munson President

We used AES before at a previous home and wanted to get an estimate from them because they do quality work and because we suspected they would provide a high end price for getting the job done. We wanted an estimate on finishing the basement and to put in a paver patio and stairs in the back. We moved into a home that was foreclosed after doing basic work to make it habitable. We called AES to get an estimate and the salesman who came was one we previously worked with. He made comments about how business must be good for us to be able to move into the house we moved into. My wife and I got the indication he was saying that we don't appear that we could afford the a "nice home." We then went into the basement and he gave great ideas on finishing it and took measurements. We then went outside and he gave great ideas on what kind of patio they could do for us. He came back in, sat down with us, and gave estimates for the job. If I remember correctly he gave an estimate of $60,000 for the basement and and estimate of $20,000 for the patio. That was WAY too much! Other estimates were much lower. Because they appeared to be consistently the most expensive AND more importantly, because we felt we were insulted, again, by the salesman, we decided to never use them again or waste time getting an estimate from them.
Description of Work: Because they had done work for us before in a previous home, we called them for an estimate on putting in a paved patio, stairs, and finishing the basement.

Dear Member: I'm sorry you felt insulted by the sales estimator as I spoke with him on both occasions of your comments. He likes you and your wife very much and has no intentions of insulting you at all. The sales estimator has been with me for over five years and has been serving our customers successfully and is very customer conscience. He has many repeat customers in his port folio and we have many letters thanking us for sending him. Again this is the first I heard of this and wished you had contacted me personally. This is an unfortunate incident of misunderstanding as our heartbeat is to treat and service our customers with the great reapect and integrity. We lived in a town home and wanted a full bath installed in the basement as well as finish the front of the basement that was used for storage and contained a washer and dryer. This was during the housing and remodeling boom. The salesman looked at what we had and took our suggestions and modified them with our consent. The full bath became a 3/4 bathroom because of the size. He rearranged the desired placing of items in the bath room because it would flow better. He suggested finishing most of the unfinished basement area, but not all. He thought it would be a waste of money to finish the area behind the washer and dryer and utility tub, instead he suggested closing off the area behind double doors. HOWEVER, the salesman said that he would do the estimate but we wouldn't be able to afford the job! The entry level of the town home was an open design and was sparsely furnished with a living room set and a dinette set, with open space in the back. This was by our choice because the back area, a sun room, would be used as a baby play area. Despite the perceived insult to us, we chose AES although we thought the price was too high. The workers were prompt and courteous. They kept to their desired time schedule and let us know if they would be late or when there would be a delay because of the many inspections. They even let us know of an inspection "gotcha" because of a new requirement that upstairs bedrooms had to have wired smoke detectors. Even though all work was done in the basement, the inspector had to certify the installation of wired smoke detectors with battery backup. At one of the workers suggestion, we argued with the inspector and his supervisor and they accepted battery smoke detectors in the rooms, which we already had. The worker saved us thousands of dollars with that simple suggestion. Every day they did a great job keeping dust downstairs and cleaning up. This was important because the timing of the work was around the time my youngest child was born and home from the hospital. NO dust made it upstairs and the efforts to dampen the sound, went above and beyond. The quality of the work was top notch and we were happy with the results. We were not happy with the price, because we thought it was too high. I gave the professionalism a C only because of the comments by the salesman.
Description of Work: They installed a 3/4 bathroom -- shower stall, toilet, sink with cabinet, and tile floor -- in the basement and finished the front of the basement, which was unfinished and created an unfinished washer/dryer area which could be closed off with double doors. It was exactly what I wanted and the job was done well.

Contractors were a joke. While removing the old tile, they cut through an electric wire. We never saw him again. The tub didn't quite fit, so they bounced up and down on it and cracked the rim of the tub. One guy didn't want to put up the tile the way I wanted. I said what we have here is a failure to communicate! Gave us money off bill. Stay away from these guys.
Description of Work: Installed whirlpool tub, tile, and faucet.

For clarification of the report, the contract date was April of 2005 and the install was started and completed July 2005, not June 15, 2010 as stated by the customers. I personally met with the homeowners and reviewed their concerns. It was unfortunate the installers cut the wire, however upon realizing the accident it was corrected by a licensed electrician of the customers choice and paid for the by AES. Upon visiting the homeowners I personally made myself available to redo the bathroom, replacing the whole job, parts and labor to make everything perfect. The homeowners elected to take a settlement and reduce the price of the job. AES did everything possible to resolve the complaint and make everything right. It's an unfortunate incident and certainly was not done on purpose. We have thousands of satified customers and will be happy to give you referrals from our customers. Thank you for considering AES Builder and Home Improvements, Inc. Tim Munson President

I love this company! After numerous contractors gave us estimates we went with AES even though they were the second highest bid for the job and we are so glad we did. The workmanship was top notch, the bathroom turned out great. The man who did the job was wonderful, showed up everyday for three weeks and worked full days, cleaned up after himself, and truly took pride in his work. Its been over threee years since the remodel and it still looks lik it was just remodeled last week. I would hire AES again in a heartbeat.

The gentleman came out last night a few minutes late and sat down and questioned where my wife was. I told him that she was at a meeting and would not be able to make it. He stated that he couldn't talk to me about the work unless both my wife and I were present. I told him that my wife would not be home until later that night he said he couldn't wait. I also told him my wife never really makes the decisions of the remodels, but he still stated that he couldn't talk to me until we were both present because he said that he closes 67% of his jobs the first visit. He also stated that the scheduler told me that both the husband and wife have to be present but he did not. He also had a opportunity the day before the appointment when he called to remind me of the appointment to tell me we both have to be present, but he did not.
Description of Work: I called a week ago to have them come out for an estimate for a new deck and bathroom remodel.

Dear member: I am sorry for the misunderstanding. We do like to have both home owners present if at all possible, especially in the case of interior remodeling. We find it is very important to receive ideas from the woman of the house in reference to bathrooms, kitchens and remodels. I cannot recall one job we have done without the wifes imput on design and colors. A lot goes into choosing the right cabinets, counter and fixtures as well as color coordination. If we can serve you in the future, please feel to call on me personally. Respectfully yours, Tim Munson President

Company's price was high compared to other windows, however the finished product was well worth it. Installation was delayed because of high priced jobs, but my work was completed in one day as opposed to the two estimated. The installer was knowledgeable, professional and courteous. I am extremely happy with the finished product.
Description of Work: Replaced seven double hung windows.

Dear Member: Thank you for your report on our company and work. We pride ourself in providing the best product and giving you the highest quality installation and proffesional installer, which by the way is a craftsman carpenter, not just a window installer. We may have been a little more expensive, however you received the top of the line product, with a quality installation and service. Please remember you have an AES five year labor guarantee on all the projects AES does for you. Again, Thank you, Tim Munson President
