Last fall I went to visit a friend in Rockville where I met Marcos who was doing some Landscape work in my Friend's home. I really liked the job he was doing and asked him if he could give me an estimate to power wash my deck; he promptly said yes. I liked his price and he came to my home a few days later to do it. He and his crew were very friendly and polite all the time and They did a very good job. Marcos is reliable and honest.

Marcos was very pleasant and professional. He was one of the few contractors who actually called us back, visited the site and provided an estimate. The companies that did respond gave estimates 3 to 4 times higher than Marcos with very little interest in doing the project. It appeared they were not interested in actually doing the work at all. The attitude about doing the job did not jive with the gloomy economic reports that indicated folks wanted to work. Maybe the job was too small. The project went very smoothly. Delays were to due to inclement weather and illness. I would recommend Marcos for any work. He and his team were very hard workers.

After reading your report about the job we did for you, I 've realized that you average B report was mostly for work timing. As I have told you before starting the job I was concerned about being at the job site most of the time but I was not feeling well those days ( I got flu), so I decided to start the job later, be present at the job and make sure that it would be a great work as as I always do for my clients. I am looking forward on doing good business with you again and being more punctual when I start another job. Again, thank you very much for your business.

I met with Marcos, the owner, shortly after I emailed him asking to get a quote on the work. He responded to the email quite promptly. He was on time the day he came to review the site, and explained very carefully exactly what needed to be done. The contract also clearly stated the details of the project. The work began on time, and was finished within a few days, without any delay. The work was done properly, and the site was cleared of all debris after completion of the project. We were very satisfied with the work. We would definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: Work involved walls surrounding stairwell leading to basement door. The walls were crumbling due to excessive moisture, caused by insufficient drainage, as well as excessive pressure caused by the wall supporting concrete steps leading to the upstairs back door. Contracted with Global Construction to replace the cinder block retaining walls, remove dirt that was dug up in order to create a drainage system behind the walls. This drainage system included putting down landscaping fabric, with gravel behind it, and making 6 weep holes on the newly constructed wall. This system was designed to prevent water from building up behind the retaining walls. The company also power washed the retaining walls & steps, resulting in a neat and clean look to the stairwell. In addition, the company removed the two columns of brick resting on the top of the retaining wall -- which supported the steps leading up to the upstairs back door. It then added a footing down to the foundation -- insuring that the two columns were no longer solely supported by the stairwell wall. This action alleviated the weight pressing down on the wall (said pressure and weight had helped to cause the crumbling of the wall itself). Global Construction removed all debris from the yard after work was completed.

Excellent work. I found Marcos through good friends who had their front stoop and sidewalk redone, as well as their neighbors front porch and side walk. When I called for an estimate he came the next day and gave me a quote on the spot. It took some time to go through our Homeowners Association, but we did receive approval and were happy to wait a week more for them to begin. We kept in contact by email. Marcos sent two masons to do our work. They did spoke very little English, but we were able to communicate just fine. They demolished the sidewalk and cracked step with a jackhammer and saw. They poured new concrete. Actually it looked so good they could have stopped there. When dry, they worked on the project for 3 more days, laying flagstone.. They needed to use our hose bib, and there was minimal stone dust on the bushes, which was to be expected and washed off. Once completed, they came with a pressure washer and washed the porch and driveway. The arrival times were freeform, and Marcos brought the masons to/from the job.. But they always arrived on the specified day, and worked as long as possible. They cleaned up everything at the end of each day, and cordoned off the whole area. I saw and spoke with Marcos each day. He was very available and answered all questions. He mentioned he picks out all the flagstones by hand for color and quality. The results are beautiful. Very fine craftsmanship. After seeing our project, two neighbors hired him to do their porches as well.
Description of Work: Laid 1" thick squared Pennsylvania Flagstone over existing cement porch stoop, 3 steps, small sidewalk to driveway. One existing cracked step and the sidewalk had the cement re-poured.

It went very well as you can see from the ratings. The workers were on time, very pleasant, very efficient, and seemed to know what they were doing. Marcos himself is an easy fellow to work with, very pleasant and friendly. He is very competent. They were all very hard working. When I changed the dimensions of the patio, Marcos was very cooperative. Altogether, a very good experience.
Description of Work: Marcos removed my present concrete patio, successfully moved a large azalea and a large rhododendron, mulched a sloping area, and constructed a beautiful large curving stone patio.

The mason completed the work fixing the cracks in our brickwork. The repairs are sloppy and the repair cement is nowhere near the color of the existing cement. We were told the work was done, and we figured the color of the cement would even out eventually. We assumed they did the chimney crowns, I mean they said they were done and we do not have ladders long enough to have checked up on their work. Anyway, in January of this year, we had a series of Chimney specialists out here to look at a problem we had with our basement chimney fireplace while we had a fire in our Family Room Fireplace. Each Chimney specialist showed us photos of two ruined, cracked, deteriorating chimney crowns - in short, the work we had paid for and were told was done last fall was NOT done. OK, so we call Global and are told that they can do the repair they were supposed to have done last fall sometime in the spring. In the meantime, we need to have the chimney repaired and having that crown work for which we had already paid was very important. So, they say they'll come out and do it but that it will probably crack due to freezing, we say, OK we'll take the chance because our chimney guys tell us that if the masonry has 8 non-freezing hours to dry, they (the chimney guys) can seal the crown and guarantee the work. So Global comes out and only does the crown for one chimney and that was the chimney which was not getting any other work done. Fortunately, our chimney guys use a special cement they have to repair the crown and do the work on the other chimney Global was supposed to do in the first place way back in the fall. In short, the work they did was sloppy and they told us the work was complete when it wasn't. Now, once we had discovered the unperformed work, the company was willing to make good. However, when they were given that chance, they still came up short and still did not complete the work they were supposed to. Fortunately, we were able to get Global's work done by our chimney guys without extra expense so in the end, we didn't lose anything. The owner is a decent guy and was very responsive once he knew of our problem. I think this is all due to a lack of communication between the owner and the mason he sent out to do the work. If you want to hire this company, make sure that everything is well communicated and that the worker that has been sent to your site understands exactly everything that is to be done.
Description of Work: They were engaged in September 2009 to repair cracks in our brick work and repair the crowns on our two chimneys.

I was not aware of the issue at the time. I tried to do my best depending on other people to do what I said. I talked to the Member's wife before sending the guys back to do the work properly when she called me and she was very polite and asked me to fix the crown of the chimney, nothing else. E always thought that everything else was fine. nobody from the Member's home ever called me again. i always ask my clients to let me know if there is any issue. I am still willing to go back to His home and fix whatever else is necessary to make sure he is totally satisfied with our work performed. Marcos Bittencourt

We selected Marcos based on recommendations on both Angie's List and the Consumer Checkbook. Marcos replied almostimmediately when we asked for an estimate and walked about getting his measurements in the pouring rain. He described in detail the work that would be done and the estimated completion time. We were satisfied with the estimate and he and his crew began work within a couple of weeks. We are very happy with the results -- the walkway is beautiful, much more attractive than the original, the stoop was improved to facilitate rain runoff, and the retaining wall will now drain, so should last far longer than the original. All construction materials were removed - very little damage to the foliage around the stoop and retaining wall. We are extremely pleased with the workmanship, efficiency, and professionalism shown by Marcos and his crew, and would definitely use his services again.

Marcos, an experienced mason himself, measured the patio area carefully and assured us that the original, 2-level brick work could be transformed into a single-level patio which would slope unnoticeably and match the levels of the surrounding ground, the side gate to the driveway, and the lower fence line. He was the only contractor who offered that result. And that's what he and his crew were able to accomplish. Marcos also suggested a herringbone brick pattern inside a brick border design, which turned out to be terrific recommendations. He also talked me out of a particularly dumb idea of mine before it was put into concrete. On the job, the foreman/bricklayer was a real professional who worked with two helpers.Their primary language was Portuguese, but they spoke English well enough to communicate. Besides, Marcos visited the site daily and was there for all major decisions. The crew was punctual (within 3 minutes), courteous, very hard working, and expert with the project. The finished product (farewell forever messy brick on sand) is a thing of beauty and it will be our joy as long as we own our home.
Description of Work: We wanted to replace a 25-year old brick and sand/timber patio with a concrete pad/mortar brick patio (using our original bricks). To find a contractor, we spoke to 4 companies, 3 from Angie's List. The owner of Global Construction, Marcos, was the last masonry contractor we spoke to...and, fortunately, the most knowledgeable. Also his 4 references were very positive about him and his work. His price was reasonable and competitive with the others.

Owner came to give estimate. Promised he would be on the job. First day he did not show up at all while one man jackhammered and removed existing concrete. Second day porch and stairs were framed. No sign of owner, still. I went down to the basement for something and I was shocked to see the contractor had drilled 10 large holes into the house. He was supposed to drill into the foundation for the rebar, but failed to notice the concrete was not thick enough. I could see the sky looking out the holes from my basement wall. In three places the holes caused fractures through the foundation from the top holes to the floor. I called the owner, who finally came just as the concrete truck drove up to pour the porch. We stopped him and had him go to Home Depot for some epoxy to fill the holes before proceeding with the pour. After the epoxy dried, the owner left, assured us he would be back or his partner would be back. No one came back and the worker was left alone, again. I will say he did a nice job on the porch, it was flat and even, with the slight slant downward for the water to drain outward. However, he did a very poor job on the stairs. He changed the configuration and added one extra step without informing us. The steps are uneven, and some slant downward in upward of 2". The bottom step was too high so the worker slanted the sidewalk up and created a ramp instead of a sidewalk, so when we walk up to the house we feel like we are walking up a hill. It looks and feels strange. We live in a townhouse so our 'sidewalk' stands out as the others are all flat. The owner later told us he was sick that's why he couldn't come. But if he was sick, he should have canceled instead of continuing with the job unsupervised. I have no idea if he was telling the truth but it cost me an additional $1500.00 to repair the damage in the basement. Luckily I only paid him partial payment. One other note. Part of the estimate was to add footers, and after the original concrete was removed it was discovered concrete piers existed in good shape so no footers were needed. The contractor did not offer to reduce his price. We pointed this out to him and he said 'tell me how much less you think you should pay'. He played games with us. We knew the estimated price because We had received other estimates with and without footers. Also, this contractor does NOT HAVE AN MHIC license and is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE DOING WORK WITHOUT IT. I will never again go with a contractor without an MHIC licenses.

My wife and myself got sick at the same time we started to do the job and we had a little girl to take care and the Member even saw her in my car. I did not want anybody else to get sick, member as well; and that was the reason to just suppervise and leave the job. I had to rely on other people to do it right. We are not perfect, but we cannot see the sky through a 1 inch diameter hole in 90 degrees on a basement wall unless you are on a high hill inclined 45 degrees and that was not the case. I am sorry that this happened. Marcos Bittencourt.

They spent approximately a week working on everything. Each day they worked full days and persisted until the project was finished. This was extensive work and took a great deal of detail. They were very conscientious and professional. I received several other estimates, however his was the best and best presented. He provided references, one of which I spoke with personally and assisted me in making the decision to hire them. He came throughout the project to check on the status and to make sure everything was going as planned. Everything was cleaned up perfectly at the end of each day and when the project was completed. I was very pleased with them and will recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Replaced 3 foot brick front on a planting box and repaired some stone in a retaining wall where material had corroded. They replaced some brick work as well to the house. They removed a large planter and replaced. They also installed weep holes to help drainage. They removed, replaced the masonry and washed everything upon completion.

Marcos came out the day after I called to provide an estimate on rebuilding the mailbox, which had been hit by a car. Though it was the Saturday before Christmas when I received the estimate, work began on Christmas Eve and continued the day after Christmas. The crew poured a new concrete base and built a beautiful replacement mailbox. Their masonry skills are excellent.
