I cannot remember the cost of the service but they were timely and responsive. I do not think that I had a negative experience with them and their price was not out of my expectation. From what I remember, it did not seem unreasonable.

You name it, he did it for me. He did with a smile. He was fantastic. I am not pushover, I do not like anybody, but they were totally fabulous. I was really pleased. They come when they say they are going to come. They do what they say they are going to do. You know how much it is going to cost beforehand.

This project was something that we considered in July, but did not act upon for about four months. DMH was flexible as to scheduling and providing the requested personnel. They generally arrived on time and performed the work in less than the estimated amount of time (2 men, 15 hours each, project was firm fixed price). The installation and quality of the work was fine. There was a problem with the installed door lock, unfortunately. My toddler somehow set the bedroom door lock so that he was able to lock the door from outside the room. We were unable to gain access to the room to unlock it from the inside and unable to pop the lock using the release mechanism from the outside. I called DMH to tell them what happened and they sent out someone to uninstall the lock and install a non-locking door knob. The initial charge for removing the faulty door knob and replacing with another one was over $200. Given the mistake on their end, I expected the charge to be solely for the cost of the replacement door knob ($26.53). I complained and the charge was reduced to ($121.53). Despite that problem, I would use DMH again but might require some kind of warranty on the work & materials as part of the contract.
Description of Work: Description Of Work: We had an open office in our house converted into a bedroom. To do so, we had to install a door and move some items around. Specifically: Modify doorway to finished doorway with door: o existing opening 43" wide x 85" tall. Install prehung 36" x 80" hollow core, flat panel door into opening. Door will open into bedroom with the hinges on the left side. o move location of double gang switches to other side of door and change to single switch.-install casing around door to match existing casing. o modify orientation of adjacent closet door (currently opens with hinges on left, would like hinges on right) o lower existing outlet adjacent to closet door from waist height to same height as other outlets in room. If simple, move outlet outside of room into hallway o lay down plastic/materials to collect and control dust

We have used Dan Millen Handyman service several times--for both the hourly handyman service (we provided a list of items to complete and they were all done within the hour) and project based services (we had cracking in the ceilings and damage to some floors). Their estimates were always reasonable and the work was done professionally. They took the time to clean up and answer any questions. We worked with A.J. in both the hourly and project-based situations and he was a true professional.

Two men came to do miscellaneous repairs, inside and outside of our large, 5 bedroom house, to prepare it for sale. Minor drywall repairs from water damage, was repaired and repainted, but the repairs were obvious and noticeable. If I had been staying in the house, I would not have been pleased, but the new owners were going to be repainting anyway, so we let it go. One interior wall looked so bad, though that we called them back to sand and repaint, which they did without complaint. They spent an entire day fixing a sagging portico above front door, which was the biggest project. Although they did a good job, I thought it took longer than necessary, over 8 hours. They seemed to work slowly. While the portico looked good, they left some tar over-hanging. They said it could be "easily cut off with a razor blade." If it was so easy to do, they should have done it. The one project that was not done properly was finding and repairing a leak above a window. After caulking the outside, and claiming it was "fixed," the area leaked profusely with the next rain. He came back, and then said he couldn't see what it needed. Suggested I replace all of our gutters, which he would do, for thousands of dollars. I declined. My husband later called a roofer (from Angie's list) who diagnosed the problem in 5 minutes, caulked the area, and fixed the leak. For about $175. While they were nice guys, they did not act professionally, and did not take the pride in their work that I wanted. Over-priced, and worked slowly I will not use them again.

Dan Millen Handyman service was recommended by a couple neighbors. They, along with two other handyman/remodeling contractors, came to view the work requested and provided an estimate. As this work was to be done after the purchase of a home, but before moving in, timing was important. DMH was one of two contractors that committed to meeting the schedule requested. Of the two, DMH had a slightly higher price, but a deeper bench to draw from and better references. They showed up on time and began to work. They sent a 3-person crew and substituted people day-to-day and sometimes during the day (all-in-all, probably 6 people worked on the house... some of them DMH employees and some subcontractors). Generally speaking, they worked hard and worked from roughly 8am to 4pm. As they agreed to a fixed price contract, I did not care too much about individual effort or day-to-day productivity, so long as they could make the overall schedule. As the week went by, it became clear that they were falling behind. Every day, I asked what was on schedule for that day and at the end of each day, I asked what was on schedule for the next. When we got near Friday, the "optional" day for clean-up, it was clear they had plenty remaining. When I asked what they intended to do, they indicated they had other obligations and would come back on Monday. That didn't sit well. Fortunately, I received a call that night saying they changed their mind, reworked their schedule, and were sending a larger crew to meet their original schedule. That Friday was a good day and they completed 95 percent of what they set out to do. On Monday, they came back w/ finishing touches... minimal... while interior painting was underway. There were several other outstanding items, but they required things like the procurement of equipment and/or materials that was not under their control. The quality of work was quite good. Some of their people were better than others, but the lead personnel were quite good and in charge. I'm quite pleased with the results. There were several opportunities for change orders and I felt comfortable going with DMH for every one of them because I liked what they were doing and thought I was getting good value overall. My main knock against them is the mess. I've never had remodeling work done before, so I didn't know what to expect, but I asked Dan Millen of DMH for his folks to do their best to keep the place clean as we have little kids that I did not want to get exposed to who-knows-what during the demolition and and construction. (Perhaps I should have asked them to price that into it upfront.) The DMH workers were focused on getting things done, however, not the reduction of dust or clean up. So, I hired 'Maid to Clean' and 'Diamond Carpet Cleaning' afterwards to clean up as much of the dust and debris as possible prior to moving in and both cleaning services did an excellent job.
Description of Work: o Tore down two walls: 1) separating kitchen/dining room and 2) separating dining room/living room o Inlaid wood borders in place of walls that blend with adjacent wood floors, but still define transitions o Moved electrical outlets, switches, and thermostat to remaining structural support and lowered duct to floor o Constructed counter top 'bar' between kitchen and dining room. Recommended contract with granite provider separately and, once the granite was purchased and installed, provided structural support and cleaned up connection to granite o Removed extensive closet shelving and installed closet hanging rod o "Moved" closet from one room to adjacent room by closing off existing door opening, creating a new opening, and moving door w/ frame o Removed installed cabinetry o Mounted TV on wall

I have laminate countertops and would be happy to replace with laminate even stock laminate. Stock cabinets have an integrated backsplash sothey would not fit my peninsula. So I asked them to price non-stock laminate. Price for a 30sqft countertop? $1622. More than $50/sqft for laminate. I had also asked for a low-end granite installation. $5750! Almost $200/sqft. Pretty insulting. I let them know I wouldn't be using their services.
Description of Work: I asked for replacement countertop services. I had used Dan before and would be happy to use him again, but he is apparently so popular that he has others take jobs for him. The person who came out was not Dan.

This is the first time I undertook a project of this size and I was completed disappointed in not only the process but the end product as well. Overall, the lesson learned is that you get what you pay for. I did not realize when I signed the contract with Mr. Millen that he would not be performing the work himself. He has young, inexperienced workers perform the work instead. While the young workers were very nice to work with (very polite), I learned that one should never use an inexperienced company to do a major renovation. Unfortunately, when I look at the tile and grout work done, it is clear that the work was performed by novices - the end product is very unprofessional looking -- grout lines uneven, grout was not sealed, caulking was applied in a messy manner, tile was cut to fit certain areas and was chipped and still used (although I have a lot of tile left over), tile was installed although worker realized while performing the job that the tiles were two different shades of white. The worker should have stopped installing the tile and should have called me to inform me of the issue. I'm sure because of his inexperience, he did not think to do this. Instead, I came home after work and saw the different shades of white but it was too late. The tile had already been completely installed. Other issues encountered include: (1) the back of my new vanity was butchered to fit the plumbing (should have been cut out neatly); (2) patio table was used as a work table to do the tile cutting and was damaged and had to be replaced (Mr Millen agreed to pay for the cost of replacement and took the damaged table); (3) sloppy painting job (I actually had a painter come in and redo the job); (4) workers nailed in the sub-floor right into a water pipe. A few months later, water was leaking through my kitchen ceiling fan and the entire ceiling had to be replaced. The plumber showed me the nail that was nailed into the pipe. Mr. Millen even yelled at me when I held up the schedule for about a week when I decided to return the tile I had purchased for another type. This was clearly my fault for holding up the schedule but it was very unprofessional for him to yell at me. In the end, I brought these issues to Mr Millen's attention and he agreed to take approximately $3000 off the cost of the job. I am now $3000 "richer" but have two bathrooms I look at everyday that are a disappointment to me.
Description of Work: Completely gutted and renovated two bathrooms.

Have pictures of this project and it came out great. Homeowner had no knowledge of remodeling projects and relied on her boyfriend to communicate with us. The member told us one thing and her boyfriend told us something different, so there were communication issues that caused problems during this project. There were issues with my employees that I do take responsibility for. This project was over 3 years ago. Since 2007, we have a completely different staff with project managers and technicians that are trained in all areas of remodeling. We apologize for the problems during the job and were not paid in full as for these projects.

After the recent major snowstorms, a sheet of ice and snow fell from our roof during the afternoon and crashed down on the greenhouse, shattering several panes of glass. We called Dan Millen and he sent two workmen out right away. They were hampered by three feet of snow in front of our house, and the fact that they had never seen an architectural feature quite like that. They got the glass cut and did the difficult job of maneuvering it into place, also having to straighten a piece of the support metal which had bent when the ice fell on it. They stayed with the job until it was completed, in darkness. We were relieved that they came so promptly, even though handyman services were in great demand, and charged us fairly. We will use them again.
Description of Work: Replaced several panes of glass in an attached greenhouse structure that projects from the front of our townhouse. It opens into the kitchen and is an unusual feature.

Dan came out to give me an estimate. Very sharp and professional, and he arrived right on time. Got an estimate very quickly, and negotiated an agreed-upon price and install date. All good until this point. On agreed date, the workers arrived on time. I had purchased the wrong type of end-caps, so I ran to the hardware store to exchange them. Just before I left, I saw one of the workers (the ultra-experienced one, according to Dan) sawing one of the countertops by holding it at an angle with one hand, leaning it against his leg, and cutting with a circular saw with the other hand. Seemed a bit odd, but I figured (at the time) the guy knew what he was doing, and I'd let the results be the judge of his methods. I brought the correct endcaps back, then left the guys there (with my cell number, if any problems/questions came up), and left a key in case they had to leave and return for anything. A note here to say I've contracted quite a variety of jobs at multiple properties in the last 5 years, so I have experience and manage my expectations accordingly. When I went back out to the property to inspect the job, I was floored by the condition of the job. So much so, that I called the contractor to see if they were coming back the next day. They had left the key, so I wanted to see whether I needed to let them back in. To my surprise, I was told that the job was complete and that they were not planning on coming back out. In the main kitchen, this is what I found. The countertop around the sink was slanted down to a corner and unbraced in any manner, showing about a half inch of slant from where the original countertop was removed (in that corner). The sink in that kitchen was bumped up about a quarter inch in the middle, allowing water to pool on one side of it rather than actually drain. The endcaps did not properly adhere, and could not, since the wood additions for the endcaps were not glued straight (or perhaps the propping-against-the-leg-at-an-angle cutting method precipitated this end result). There was zero cleanup (sawdust, nails, screws, pieces of wood, etc.) The basement countertop was in better shape, but was not attached properly in one area. Like in the main kitchen, endcaps were also not well-adhered. There was water leaking from the sink hookups, so I had to shut off the water valves. No cleanup here either. I have photos of the job, taken when I arrived this day. I scheduled for Dan to come out to look at the job, as I wanted him to see the condition so he would know the workmanship he was employing. He was surprisingly defensive, but after a bit of convincing, he admitted the work was subpar. A few days later, the same main worker who did the original job came out to make the repairs I had listed off with Dan, but the endcaps still weren't done right, one of the water hookups was still leaking (and the spray hose was twisted around the other plumbing hoses, so you couldn't actually pull it out to spray with), and there was still zero cleanup after the fact. I called Dan again (he was even more defensive than the first time), and requested that he send a different crew out to make good on the repairs. The new crew did a very good job of fixing the mistakes and cleaning up. Third time's the charm. Overall, a very frustrating experience, mostly due to Dan making me feel like I had unreal expectations and the shock of seeing a job that was supposed to spruce up the property actually make it less appealing.
Description of Work: Contractor replaced kitchen counters in two kitchens in a vacant rental townhouse. Included removal and disposal of old countertops, cleanup and installation of new sinks in both. I bought and provided the countertops, endcaps, sinks and faucet for the job and brought them to the property ahead of time (one faucet was moved).

There were challenges from the beginning -- some my fault, some the company's and some mother nature's. This was a job that changed a bit as a result of what we found in the rental. However, the last several weeks (2 months past the due date) were completely unacceptable. Dan was completely unresponsive and when I finally got him on the phone, he cussed at me saying that if he executed on my directions the apartment is going to look like *explicit*. Job was ultimately way over budget, way past deadline and I've never been treated so poorly by any contractor in my life. PS - When the work was finally done, I was able to rent my apartment without problem (though I lost thousands in rental income).
Description of Work: My basement rental unit needed a lot of work including painting, removal of carpet, dry wall, new fixtures, windows, doors.

Response from DMH Services LLC
THIS JOB DID GO OVER BUDGET AND PAST THE DEADLINE HOWEVER, THERE WERE MAJOR ISSUES THAT CAME UP THAT CAUSED THESE PROBLEMS. THE BASEMENT APARTMENT FLOODED WEEKLY, HAD INCORRECT/ILLEGAL WIRING (FLIP A SWITCH AND BREAKERS POP OR SPARKS SHOOT OUT FROM THE SWITCHES/OUTLETS), MAJOR WATER DAMAGE INSIDE THE WALLS, DRAIN PROBLEMS, AND GUTTER/DOWNSPOUT PROBLEMS PROBLEMS. WE REFUSED TO DO ANY WORK UNTIL THE FLOODING WAS UNDER CONTROL. WE HAD ALREADY REPLACED THE LOWER 18" OF THE DRYWALL THROUGHOUT THE BASEMENT WHICH WAS GETTING WET EVERY TIME THE BASEMENT FLOODED. WE HAD TO REDO THE BASE MOLDING 2 TIMES BECAUSE OF THE FLOODING. THE HOMEOWNER TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS TO HAVE THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. ORIGINALLY WE WERE GOING TO INSTALL TILE ON THE FLOOR IN THE MAIN ROOM AND CARPET IN THE BEDROOM. THE CONCRETE SLAB WAS IN SUCH POOR CONDITION THAT THE TILE WOULD CRACK. THE CARPET SUBCONTRACTOR COULDN'T MEASURE FOR CARPET ON 2 OCCASIONS BECAUSE THERE WAS 3" OF WATER IN THE BEDROOM. THE HOMEOWNER DECIDED TO HAVE US PAINT THE CRUMBLING CONCRETE TO WHICH I DID SAY WOULD LOOK LIKE S**T, WHICH IT DOES. THIS PROJECT DOES NOT REFLECT THE WORK WE DO AND I DIDN'T WANT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THESE TYPES OF REPAIRS. THE ONLY REASON THE PROJECT WENT OVER BUDGET IS BECAUSE ADDITIONAL ITEMS CAME UP THROUGHOUT THE JOB. THE BACK WALL OF THE BASEMENT HAD 2 WINDOWS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FROM WATER COMING THROUGH THEM. ALL OF THE FRAMING AND DRYWALL HAVE ROTTED AWAY BECAUSE THE IVY ON THE BACK OF THE HOUSE HAD CAUSED THE GUTTERS, DOWNSPOUTS AND BRICK VENEER TO BE COMPROMISED (NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL SCOPE, WHICH WE REPAIRED AT AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE). THE NEW WINDOWS WERE INSTALLED (NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL SCOPE, WHICH WE REPAIRED AT AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE). AFTER THE SCOPE OF WORK WAS ADJUSTED AND THE CHANGE ORDER/PROPOSAL WAS SIGNED OFF BY THE HOMEOWNER, THE WORK WAS COMPLETED BY THE NEW DEADLINE GIVEN BY THE HOMEOWNER. THE REPORT GIVEN BY THE HOMEOWNER IS ACCURATE, BUT THE GRADING IS A BIT OFF. SHE DIDN'T TAKE INTO ACCOUNT HER PART OF THE DEAL. HOW CAN MY PRICE BE A "C" WHEN SHE AGREED TO THE PRICE? THERE WERE MANY TIMES WHEN THE HOMEOWNER WOULD CALL, I WOULD CALL RIGHT BACK ONLY TO GET VOICE MAIL. I WOULD THEN GET A RETURN CALL 3 DAYS LATER. THE HOMEOWNER WOULD SEND EMAILS TO WHICH I RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY. I WOULD THEN GET A PHONE CALL SEVERAL DAYS LATER. THE HOMEOWNER WOULD TELL ME SHE WAS AWAY OR BUSY AT WORK. THERE WERE TIMES I DIDN'T RETURN HER CALLS RIGHT AWAY, FOR THE SAME REASONS. I EVEN HAD MY MANAGER CALL AND LEAVE HER MESSAGES THAT WENT UNANSWERED. TO SAY I WAS UNRESPONSIVE IS A BIT OF A LIE. WE WERE VERY PUNCTUAL, BUT IT WAS HARD TO PAINT AND DO DRYWALL WORK WHEN THERE IS WATER COMING THROUGH THE WALLS. WE WOULD SHOW UP, BUT COULDN'T DO ANY WORK, SO WE WOULD LEAVE. THIS JOB COULD HAVE STAYED ON BUDGET AND ON TIME, BUT WOULD STILL BE SITTING AS A VACANT, UNSAFE APARTMENT. P.S. THE ONLY REASON THE APARTMENT WAS ABLE TO BE RENTED OUT IS BECAUSE OF THE WORK THAT WAS DONE. IT'S MUCH EASIER TO RENT A UNIT WHEN THERE ISN'T WATER POURING THROUGH THE WINDOWS AND COLLECTING ON THE FLOOR. IT ALSO HELPS WHEN THE LIGHTS GO ON WHEN A SWITCH IS TURNED ON (INSTEAD OF GETTING SHOCKED OR TRIPPING A CIRCUIT BREAKER).
