Response from DHI Roofing Contractor
As a practice, we do painting and other types of work only if we are already onsite doing a roofing project. Because of our overhead, mainly roofing workmen's compensation is so high, we typically are not competitive on painting projects alone. During this time period, 2008 we refered painting requests to my friend, Gary Hahn, who owns Hahn and Hahn Painting Company. May and June is a very busy time for them, and us, and they weren't able to get back to the customer as soon as they had hoped. Over the last twenty seven years, we have given thousands of estimates, and never charged for any of them. I can't count how many times a homeowner hasn't been home during a scheduled appointment. With every phone call, the first question I try to ask is, do you want a same day emergency visit for a fee, or do you want to schedule an appointment time to receive a free estimate. We then set a day and time, and I arrive as scheduled. I have even come out on Saturdays and Sundays if nothing else is available. It is only when the customer has hesitation, or is unable to meet with us on any day during daylight hours, that we will then give an "anytime estimate" in between other appointments, while we are around their neighborhood. To contractors, 99% of the time, this is an indication that the customer isn't in a hurry to start a project. Depending on the time of year, this type of estimate can sometimes take 3-6 weeks to arrive.
