Chesapeake Chimney & Co

Chimney Sweep, Chimney Repair, Fireplaces,

About us

Make a chimney evaluation your top priority! Chesapeake Chimney & Co. can help you get your chimney in top shape. We take pride in being Calvert County's only certified chimney sweep. Get your chimney checked NOW to avoid a headache next winter. It's easy to forget about your chimney when it's warm outside. You've stopped using the fireplace and you rarely fire up the furnace. But don't put your chimney out of mind just yet. Almost all home heating systems - including furnaces, boilers and wood stoves - rely on chimneys to safely vent the exhaust they produce to the outside of your home. In fact, both the National Fire Protection Association and the Chimney Safety Institute of America recommend annual inspections for all chimneys-no matter how you heat your home. An annual chimney inspection can help eliminate fire and carbon monoxide hazards and protect your home from property loss due to deterioration or water damage

When we couldn’t turn off our insert with the remote Xmas weekend & the installing Co in Waldorf failed to even call back the next week, I contacted Chesapeake Chimney. Joseph came promptly & ID’d what had failed to work. He ordered the warranty parts & did a great job installing the new parts.

Hired Chesapeake Chimney to clean my pellet stove and chimney. I went to use my pellet stove a few days later when it got cold enough to turn it on and it was inoperable and had not been reassembled correctly. Took over an hour to discover a disconnected wire and to put the panels back on properly. There was still dust and pellets throughout the stove and the glass wasn't even cleaned. I sent an email to the company and filled out a contact form through their website and they never acknowledged me. Won't be using this company again.

These people guided me through the entire process. They showed me what was going on with my chimney, where the damage was and what needed to be repaired. They worked with me and my insurance company and I to provide the most equitable deal for us. They consulted with the roofing company I contracted to replace my roof, (not insurance related). The work was conducted in a clean, quick and courteous manner. All in all, it was a professional job well done! Follow-up work was conducted in a timely fashion that made the experience a breeze. I highly recommend this company for any chimney work you may require.
Description of Work: I like to wait before doing a review to give time a chance to complete my opinions. This company exceeded my expectations. My wood burning insert upstairs needed to be replace and moved downstairs to my hearth and the chimney was suffering from storm damage.

Excellent job. Daniel Titus and Justin Reynolds, of Chesapeake Chimney & Co., were extremely professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. They were more than prompt with their arrival, as they called two hours prior to the scheduled time to notify me that their first appointment was cancelled and they would be available to get to my home earlier than scheduled. Daniel assessed the chimney (positioned himself on the roof) while Justin got to work in the cellar where the oil-burning furnace is located. They were assessing an issue that had been previously discovered by a furnace serviceman who noticed a dangerous amount of debris collecting in the bottom of the chimney shaft, which was partially blocking the exhaust path from the furnace. Both determined that the debris consisted of masonry particles shedding from the inside of the chimney, which had no liner. (Chimney is quite old, built at a time when liners were not required.) Justin further described an issue with the connecting pipe (from furnace to thimble) regarding excessive number of elbows and an declining position, both of which hinder efficiency of exhaust release. Both answered all of my questions as I observed their work, provided recommendations for follow-up maintenance (stainless steal liner, insulation), etc. About two weeks later, they provided an email with an itemized estimate, one with a price including the insulation, one without, so that I could make a decision based on my budget and preference. (I further researched the benefits of adding insulation and made my decision from that.) We are now in the process of scheduling the installation of the liner and insulation.

|Daniel and Justin were very professional, knowledgeable and informative. The price for the assessment was exactly what was quoted when the appointment was made (and was about $100 cheaper than one of the other estimates I received), and I even received my Angie's List coupon discount, which dropped a few dollars from the original estimate. Every little bit helps! They discussed the estimated cost of the follow-up work and said I would soon receive an email with a fully itemized estimate to peruse before making a decision or scheduling an appointment. | |I was 100% satisfied with the work of Chesapeake Chimney, would recommend them to anyone needing chimney service, and I do plan to follow up with them for the recommended work required in my case. | |
Description of Work: I have a very old house with an oil burning furnace (for hot water baseboard heating). My furnace maintenance rep noticed a collection of debris in my exhaust pipe and recommended that I call a chimney company. I researched and contacted several companies. Chesapeake Chimney was the first one able to accommodate my schedule, and also had the benefit of carrying all certifications, etc. | |The workers (Justin and Daniel) called a couple of hours prior to the scheduled time, noting that their first job had been canceled. They asked if they could go ahead and come to my house. I mentioned that I had a nearby appointment but would be happy to have them start earlier. When I arrived home from my appointment, they had arrived a few minutes prior and had begun work (on the roof and in the cellar, to which I had provided access). They were dressed in full chimney-sweeper uniforms, complete with leather top hats! | |Daniel assessed the chimney while Justin assessed the exhaust pipe connecting the furnace to the chimney. The original furnace rep had been to the house just 4 weeks prior and Justin noticed that there was already a new pile of debris in the bottom of the pipe. He (and the furnace rep) expressed concern about exhaust blockage and immediately asked if I owned a carbon monoxide detector (which I do). Meanwhile, Daniel revealed that the chimney was never built with a liner (most have clay or steel liners). So, the cement material was deteriorating inside the shaft and falling to the pipe floor. The deterioration was occurring due to the mixture of oil soot and rain, because there was no appropriate cap on the chimney to protect the opening from rain and other weather elements. | |Justin thoroughly cleaned the debris from the pipe. Both then thoroughly explained the necessary next steps - should I wish to hire them back (they were careful to mention this, putting no pressure on me to do so). They explained that they would install a steel liner and insulation between the liner and the chimney wall. They would add a cap that would protect the shaft from weather elements, eliminating further deterioration. Justin further explained that my connecting pipe was oriented in a downward position prior to connecting to the shaft, which was not ideal, and that they would re-configure the piping and replace the thimble so that the exhaust matter would flow more efficiently and safely up the chimney (reducing stress on the furnace function as well). |

Response from Chesapeake Chimney & Co
Dear Mr. [member name removed], We have checked our records and the last service date that we have is on 6/21/2009. During that visit we only inspected and measured the chimney for a new chase cover and provided options for pellet stoves. The visit was at no charge. We believe that you may have our company confused with another company in St. Mary's County "Chesapeake Chimney Sweeps". They do have a similar phone number to ours but be assured that we are in no way associated with them. We take pride in providing excellent service and this would not have happened if we were servicing your chimney system. Please do not hesitate to contact our office at: 410-535-0052 if you would like us to schedule a visit to do an inspection. We would be more than happy to assist you.

Mr. Titus arrived promptly. He was clean, courteous and professional. He inspected 3 chimneys and gave me recommendations on repairs needed. He cleaned one without bringing soot into my home. Repair recommendations were well explained and details of the estimate for repairs required were well stated. As well he gave me information regarding safety standards which I could use in deciding how to stratify my repairs.

Crew of 2 (Danny & Justin) called the day of the appointment to see if they could come an hour early since they finished their previous call sooner than expected. They did everything I expected - covered the area to keep things clean; cleaned out the ashes in the firebox, inspected the exterior of the chimney; cleaned the entire inside of the flue; used a remote video camera to inspect the entire flue for cracks, bad joints or other issues; and vacuumed the entire fireplace and surrounding area when finished. They answered any questions I had with knowledge and professionalism. Told me what to look out for in any future video inspections but did not push any immediate need for further services or repairs. Cleaned up thoroughly and were finished in less than 2 hours. Note: Price paid reflects a 5% Angie's List coupon.

The inspection revealed issues with both the chimney and wood stove. Their inspection was honest and thorough; I did not have the feeling they were trying to sell me something and even offered some tips on items I could accomplish myself. Two employees accomplished the work and it took approx 1.5 hours. I believe the price was reasonable, but not a level to warrant an A. I would use them again.

They don't do estimates as they have fixed prices. $150.00 for chimney and fireplace, prices differ with inserts, etc. Since we have 2, he discounted the cost to $250. They arrived on time, with everything they needed to accomplish the job. They were friendly and efficient and took great care to protect my floor and furniture. While on the roof they noticed that there were no caps on the chimney, and asked if I would like them installed. After discussing the caps and prices I told them to proceed. it was something I had forgotten about when I scheduled the appoinment. We had decided to do that as chimney swifts nested there every year. The caps were stainless steel, and $100. each. There was no pressure to get them, just a straight forward question. Our chimneys are very tall, one over 3 stories, so I was delighted I didn't have to call them back a second time. They finished quickly, and left no trace that they had been there. I can highly recommend them, and will use them again.

The company sent two very professional employees to perform the service. They were running a bit late, but called me to let me know that they were still on the way and to apologize for being late (I wish more companies did this). Once they arrived they got straight to work and cleaned and inspected my chimney. I've read a lot of horror stories about chimney cleaning companies that will quote you for work that you don't need. These guys did not do that. They recommended that I have only one part of my chimney replaced, and it's visible from my roof that it needs changing due to excessive rust. Further, they told me that I could go one to two years before getting it fixed before it would be a problem. Honesty! I went ahead and scheduled the service and will post another report once that work is done. One of the best things about this service call was that they explained everything in detail. I didn't know anything about chimneys and was asking a lot of questions. They answered the questions clearly and were very patient. Great company! I'll be doing business with them in the future.

I scheduled a sweep and inspection for my chimney which has a liner (not masonry). The technician came a little late, but called ahead of time and explained that he was running late. They arrived and immediately set up their equipment and began working. The work was performed promptly and the technician thoroughly explained his findings and answered all of my questions. They inspected the fireplace, chimney, and went on top of the chimney to inspect as well. He also provided estimates for the small amount of repair work that needed to be performed. The area they worked in was clean when they left and the technician was very personable. Overall it was a positive experience and I would use this company again.

Chimney sweep for gas fireplace and cleaning/sweeping of dryer exhaust vent.
Description of Work: Chesapeake Chimney arrived exactly on time and started work immediately. He (forgive me but I forgot his name) provided detailed explanations as he performed his work and and answered all my questions with great satisfaction on my part. He also informed me that required maintenance was not needed on my type of fireplace but I was having it done for pest control reasons. And also for my dryer exhaust, he told me the minimum interval for cleaning the exhaust vent which I thought was more than reasonable. Great work overall!
