My wife and I hired Hopkins & Porter for a major remodeling job on our home. We could not be happier with the end results! They understood what we were looking for and turned it into reality. The results exceeded our expectations. And Hopkins & Porter guided us through the whole process to make a complex job seem simple. Our construction manager was great -- honest, trustworthy and had a great attention to detail. And he was available day and night via phone, text or email. I highly recommend Hopkins & Porter for any remodeling needs.

They were terrific in adjusting to change. I chose them because they were low-key -- they didn't push their agenda. They knew what I wanted and stayed with that. Out of all of the people I got estimates from, this was the only company that would allow me to stay with the design that my architect son had drawn up. They were very responsive and called me back quickly when I had questions. They even came out 6 mos later to make sure everything was fine. They checked out problem areas and made sure that they came up with solutions. I'm impressed with how they built things and fixed things.
Description of Work: They did an addition on to my home. I worked with them from October 2013 until the beginning of May 2014. Guy Semmes was my point person throughout the process; I'd worked with him many years ago in another house.
It was fine although it was started by one person who then left and finished a couple weeks later by someone else.
Description of Work: I had the front door lock repaired and splintered wood glued back together, the deck repaired and powerwashed and the back siding of the house touched up along with the removal of a stationary basketball hoop.
Did a professional job and are nice to deal with. Only issue I had they installed a standard white that doesn't match all my other putty-colored gutters. Wish I had been on top of the color issue, but I had them install it while I was at work.
Description of Work: They replaced a gutter that had fallen after lots of snow and ice.

I think you have to be careful with what you purchase because it expires and it really did not work for me. I would not use them again.
Description of Work: I used Hopkins & Porter Handymen about six months ago. They provided me with options for the services that I needed.

1. Daniel Ridge of Hopkins and Porter arrives at 8:00 a.m., middle of first week of August. Inspects door. Goes to hardware store. Returns with lumber (1 1/2 x 8and quot; x 4') and pane of glass (10 x 18), but without lock or wood screws; says hardware store didn't have any. While he fits lumber into door jamb (in the process knocking out a three cubic inch chunk of concrete from the step, which he says he will fix later, but doesn't) I go to Strosnider's and buy lock and screws (one half hour). He has trouble taking old glass out (putty has petrified) so takes door home with him. Says he will return on Sunday morning, the 7th, to install door. 2. Calls Saturday to say he has a and quot;schedule conflictand quot; and could he come Monday? OK. 3. Calls Sunday to say he hurt his ankle, could he reschedule again for Wednesday morning? OK. 4. Calls Tuesday to say his doctor told him to stay off the ankle, could he come Thursday morning? OK. 5. Hasn't shown up Thursday morning and hasn't called. At 8:15 a.m. I leave message, and quot;please call.and quot; At 8:20 he calls to say he's just passed the National Zoo and he's lost. I tell him he's gone 20 blocks too far. He arrives, with door, with lock, but without tools to install lock. He puts glass in door and hangs door. Glass installation very sloppy but door hanging well done. Says he will return Friday to install lock. Also says he has not only hurt his ankle but that his back is bad and that he may need to have a follow-up operation on his neck. That he's woozy from taking painkillers. I ask about cost, he says he must consult his notes but that the job is and quot;well over six hours of work.and quot; When he returns Saturday he also installs a light fixture on the porch -- all materials provided by me. That took about twenty minutes. Another minor issue worth noting: each time he performed work in the garage he made no attempt to clean up debris. Wood shavings, glass shards, etc., which I had to clear afterward. In total, he worked for about two and a half or maybe three hours. To be extremely generous, say four hours of and quot;work, and quot; including a semi-botched trip to the hardware store. More than that is essentially dishonest, counting multiple, unnecessary trips plus laziness while working. Moreover, his itemized bill for $45 of materials is overtly dishonest. The only materials he bought were the lumber and the glass. The molding he used -- itemized in the bill -- was recycled from the old door frame, and the only hardware used -- again itemized in the bill -- was what I bought at Strosnider's. Lumber and glass should not have cost over $15 at most hardware stores.
Description of Work: Lock fitted in garage entry door, requiring door frame repair, plus one window pane in that door replaced. Separately, one light fixture installed on porch.

handyman service, replacement windows

Hopkins and Porter sent an experienced carpenter to give me an estimate. He evaluated the three windows that needed replacing. He also examined two other small wooden windows that needed repair. Hand P ordered a reasonable quality window (it met the requirements for the tax rebate). The carpenter selected a grained red oak to obtain as close a match as possible to the hardwood trim in my house (probably chestnut). He removed old windows and A/C units, did a perfect job installing the wood trim. Off the shelf windows were not available to replace the small windows, so he built vinyl framed double glazed windows to replace them. The retrofitting of the 5 windows took longer than originally estimated, so the price was a little higher than originally estimated, but STILL below the estimate from the first contractor for three windows. We had to reschedule once or twice to get the job done. The carpenter was very courteous, punctual and neat.
Description of Work: There were three vinyl windows built around air conditioning units in my house. When they were removed, the vinyl windows had to be replaced and there was a need for carpentry work to repair the sill and replace window trim. I got two estimates. The first estimate was to replace three windows. H&P's estimate was to replace 3 large windows and two small ones, and was still the lower of the two estimates, so of course I went with them.

I am not sure if they're on Angie's List, I think they might be. I think I did check on them but she had already hired them. I don't think I would have hired them based on the Angie's List report because they were showing like a B and I normally don't look for anybody that rate below an A.
Description of Work: My wife went out and got Hopkins & Potter Handymen. I had bought a house that had been renovated but still had some things to be done like attic insulation, electrical repair and some plumbing repairs. They also did some minor painting.

The quote seemed very expensive, so I sent out an inquiry on my neighborhood listserv. I received several responses all suggesting that indeed the price was outrageous. Using a recommendation from the listserv I found someone else to do it for $575 in less than 3 hours, stairs included. This is almost a quarter of what H&P quoted. The fellow from H & P never called back.
Description of Work: I needed my pull down attic stairs replaced. After calling Hopkins & Porter, a fellow came to my house, looked at my stairs and left. He called later with an estimate of over $2,000 - $750 for the stairs and the rest for 8 hours work with 2 people. I told him I would have to think about it.

I asked for an estimate. Nick Lindbaugh came and gave me an estimate. Said it would be about 2-3 weeks and he would call me back. He did. We set the time. He showed up and completed the job in about 4.5 hours. He finished the job and you can not tell anything was repaired. Nick really gave much thought into how to do the repair.

Generally well. There were some technical issues, mostly related to the door installation; however, these were unique to the door design and outside of the contractor's control. Their resulting solution was more than suitable.
Description of Work: Extended the Foyer area of the house (i.e., moved an exterior wall forward), installed a set of heavy double 8-foot tall steel doors, added exterior paneling to house in the affected area, installed drywall in the interior, installed new square roof supports on porch, added to porch area, installed additional footing, installed flagstone on porch and walkway, and installed large pagoda in front of porch (using vertical wrapped square columns and overhead cedar structure).
