 + 0 moreIt went very well! I needed the drain line extended for about 10 feet after the job was completed. Barry Gladstone, the owner, came out on the next business day and completed the work at no extra charge. I waited for 2 years to write this review to test the drainage system over 2 complete weather cycles. After all of this time, everything is still working very well. I highly recommend Mr. Gladstone and the Outdoor Connection Inc for outside drainage system work.

They came when promised and were flexible working around the weather (snowfall). They were flexible with the design (during early phase of the work) so we got what we wanted. They cleaned up when complete.

 + 1 moreBarry Gladstone did a wonderful job. He is a true professional - he showed up on time, ready to work, and did what he committed to do, in a timely fashion. He also left my yard in better shape than when he arrived by cleaning the sidewalks and removing all dirt and debris when he finished the project. He and his team hand dug a trench that ran along the side of the house to carefully look for pipes (he found three) and wires (he found the ground wire). He also found a large underground tree stump with multiple roots. My neighborhood was built in the 1940's and most houses have additions, so the utility history has not always been reliable. Barry's careful hand and attention to detail prevented problems from developing. He also removed the perennials and grass is such a way that he was easily able to replant after back filling the trench. In addition, Barry volunteered to bring fresh sod to patch bare areas in the lawn. The second day of the job, Barry returned, on time, to repair the cement sidewalk and cut bluestone to repair the stone path way. Both sidewalks look great. All in all, I am very pleased with the work performed by The Outdoor Connection. I would definitely use this company again and highly recommend them for landscape and hardscape projects
Description of Work: I needed an old, collapsed underground drainage pipe replaced to correct the problem we were having with gutters backing up and water seeping into the foundation wall and basement floor during heavy rain storms. The project involved digging up and setting aside perennial hostas and lirope, cutting through a cement sidewalk, bluestone pathway and lawn to excavate a trench to install 100 feet of schedule 40 4" pipe. The trench was sloped so the end of the pipe would empty into a pop up drain with an underground drain pit in front of my vegetable garden. After installing the pipe, the trench would be backfilled, the grass and perennials replanted and the cement sidewalk and stone path repaired

 + 2 moreThe landscaping around the house was overgrown after being in place for 25 years. That was all removed and replaced with new landscaping and a more modern retaining wall. The project came out just as I had hoped and it gave a whole new look to the front of the house. The new patio and retaining walls in the back replaced the old concrete slab. Everything was done neatly and the yard was reseeded where any grass was disturbed. After 2 weeks, all of the plants are doing well and it still looks great.
Description of Work: Removed existing landscaping around the front of the house, built a paver retaining wall, and put in new landscaping. Also put in two retaining walls and a patio in the back

 + 0 moreAs always, Barry and his crew worked hard, conscientiously, courteously, and took pride in their work. They were always on the job by 7:10 A.M. Started working immediately. Cleaned up daily and thoroughly when the job was done. This job was started on 7/21 and finished on 7/31. We have had several compliments on the walls; all very complimentary. This is at least the third time we have used this company, and will do so again when we need further landscape or hardscape done.
Description of Work: Removed existing wood landscape walls (2) and garden edging. Designed and constructed new hardscape walls, which were more extensive than the previous walls. Also installed new hardscape edging around edges of garden. Provided topsoil where the elevation of the new wall required it. Replanted numerous plants and shrubs which were moved and seeded areas of yard where needed due to construction.

 + 2 moreFrom the moment Barry, the president of the company, returned our phone inquiry and set up a time to come see our project, until the last handshake good-bye when the job was completed, our experience with The Outdoor Connection staff was perfect in every way. First, Barry came and spent a good deal of time with us listening to our wishes and giving us good suggestions. He brought brochures to show us options and told us where we could go see the pavers before we chose the color and pattern. Barry is so experienced, knowledgeable, and efficient that he gave us a very reasonable bid before he left that day. (That really impressed my husband because none of the other companies that bid the job gave us a bid on the spot!) At the time Barry estimated that it would be several weeks before he could get to the job, but then within a few hours that same day, he called to say that if we were interested in his bid, he felt he could juggle his schedule to work us in the very next week. We were sold! What a hard-working, experienced, knowledgeable contractor! From that moment on, we were met with only the nicest, hard-working crews imaginable. Barry doesn't subcontract so all the crews that came for different parts of the job were his men. They worked hard every day, kept the job immaculate when they left for the day, and did beautiful, careful work. Ed, who lays the pavers, is an artist. The new walk and steps are impressive - more than we even hoped for! But beyond the fine craftsmanship and professionalism of Barry and his team, we can't imagine working with a nicer group of men. It makes us wish we had more walks, walls, firepits, etc to have done by The Outdoor Connection.

Description of Work: Removed enough deck board to create access beneath deck landing. Installed approximately 400 sq. ft. of geo-fabric to minimize soil erosion; fabric will be anchored with sod staples. Removed soil;d approximately 6" in depth along length of concr,ete retaining wall. Installed fabric and clean stone; created a shallow drain pit at side of deck staircase. Installed a 20' 4" drain pop-up pipe top drain water from drain pit. Used fabric and clean stone to eliminate clogging of drain close to neighboring fence.

 + 3 moreAfter moving into the area we wanted to transform our backyard into something that would work well for entertaining. I contacted The Outdoor Connection, Inc. which I found on Angie's List. Within 24 hours the owner and president of the company Barry Gladstone contacted me. We talked about ideas and he came out to the house and looked at the property. He drew up the plans which were exactly what I had envisioned and got started. The tree's and the elevated garden were put in immediately. Because of weather related issues the actual patio was not started until the spring. They came everyday to work and did not go to another job until my job was done. The two men that came to work at my house every day were very polite and very professional. I picked out everything from the paving stones to the grill. During construction there were some draining issues after a hard rain. Those were addressed immediately and plans tweaked to fix the problem. If I had any questions about anything I could get a hold of Barry. If he did not answer his phone when I called, I always got a call back within a few hours. It was such a pleasure doing business with The Outdoor Connection, Inc. We have had many family and neighborhood get together in our new back yard. People who saw the backyard before it was done, couldn't believe the transformation. They said it looks like it comes right out of Better Homes and Gardens.
Description of Work: Created a large entertaining patio which included sitting walls, fire pit and outdoor kitchen. To increase the the size of the patio they rotated the location of the deck around the above ground pool. They made an elevated garden and planted 8 Arborvitae's and 3 River Birch.

 + 1 moreBarry was 1 of 5 provider that we contact back in May when we started to research for our project. From the beginning we notice his professionalism. He accommodate his schedule to answer our questions during our decision time and gave us an estimate which was a par with the other companies but since he was a local company (Perry Hall) and made me feel at ease from the beginning we decided to hire him. He was extremely knowledgeable about the patios and landscaping and helped us choose a great patio design. Our project started on 9/30/2014 with excavation to bury the drainage which was going to be under the patio. These are empty through pop ups. Then they built the footings for the 2 steps landing which were attached to the foundation of the house. These steps were a transition from the kitchen to the patio. Barry took into consideration my elderly parents in its design and make sure that these was a smooth transition for them. They were built with the pavers and bullnoses. Subsequently, they built the patio meticulously tapping between the different layers so the Tech-Bloc would make a great surface. They completed the patio by brushing the pavers with poly sand. After they completed our patio, they grade our lawn and finish the project by installing sod. During the 5 days of the construction, Barry was on site early every day. He was very courteous and patient during the entire process, as well as his crew. They answer all our questions every day. They clean every single day before they left. Barry and his crew worked very hard to get our patio and backyard finished on time. We are very pleased with the result and will not hesitate to call his company again for any addition to our backyard.
Description of Work: The provider bury our drainage/sump line(s), grade and sod our backyard, and design and build a 500 sq. ft patio.

 + 2 moreI hired Barry after doing extensive research, first online through Angies List, and then by meeting each of the selected contractors at home. He was not the cheapest one, he was not the most expensive one either, but boy oh boy am I glad we chose him. Besides A+ Remodeling who did our deck, I have never had the pleasure to work with contractors with the same level of work ethic and professionalism. Barry was on the job every day with his crew. They all knew exactly what they were doing, and as a side note, I could understand each and every one of them, which was refreshing. They cleaned up the work site, my driveway, and any dirt that ended up on the street as a consequence of their work every single day before they left. They answered all my questions patiently. They were punctual and polite. It took 4 days from start to finish. They did not rush the job at any point. They did not cut any corners. They actually went the extra mile whenever possible to make it look as good as it possibly could. Barry left us with extra sand, and 6 extra pavers of each size. He also left us with a gorgeous patio and doubled the curb appeal of my house from the street with those edges on each side of my driveway. 1/3 of the payment was done at the contract signing, the rest was paid off after completion of the work. I have zero regrets in spending the extra money and going with Barry. It was worth every cent for the quality of the work performed. NOTE: I was limited to 10 pictures on the review. Description of Work: Patio: - Removed concrete pad and construc a 325 square foot patio using Hanover tumbled Appian random pavers; - Install one drain under the patio that extended 24 feet and empty through pop up drain; How they did it: they first excavated to the proper level. Then they tamped it down, evened it out, and added fabric. Then came the crushed stone. 2 or 3 layers of it, which were each time evened out and tamped down. After that came the sand, same process. On the edge, they put in stoppers against the pavers that they fixed into the ground with huge (and I mean huge) metal spikes. Those edges are not caving anytime soon. After the pavers were laid, they brushed in bags and bags of poly sand into the cracks until every nook and crevasse was filled. They worked on the foundation of the Patio for 2 days before they even started laying a single paver. I guess when you have a 5 years warranty on your work, you want to make really sure it's done well. They went through every single step described above when they did the borders of my driveway. Note: They did all the grading by hand, since the patio was under my deck and there was not much room to maneuver around the posts. They did a great job with the grading. They also added farm top soil all around the patio which they seeded, fertlized, and covered with straw to help it germinate, to erase any possible damage done to my lawn while they worked. Quite frankly, the soil they brought is of better quality than the one I had. Step Landing: - Construct one step 48" L and 24" W using stone pavers and capped with bullnose pavers; Heat Pump: - Construct a box to frame around the heat pump using the same stone and pavers and edged with the same bullnose pavers; - Fill the bottom with river rocks. Driveway border: - Install a paver edge on each side of the concrete driveway. 43 linear feet in all. - Construct a pavers edge around the bushes near the house, fill it with river rocks.

 + -1 moreIt is unbelievable the dedication the owner has to accomplishing the job and the exceptional professionalism of him and his team. Barry worked 12 hours the first day, at least 10 hours the second day, and completed the job on the third day. As someone else wrote "WOW" the finished job is worthy of being in a magazine. The price was more than reasonable and is a reflection of this owner's reputation of being one of the best, if not the best, people and landscaping companies to use. Anyone looking for top quality hardscaping - be sure to contact Barry (owner) for an estimate. We have seen some landscaping his company has done and, it too, looks great.
Description of Work: Hardscape. The job involved removal of old edging, both concrete-type and wood. Edged walkway, part of lawn where practical with stone type edging (Belgik), and built walls on both sides of driveway with brick-like (Creta and mini Creta). Job was complicated due to our irrigation system being close to and under the areas where work was done.

 + 3 moreThe Outdoor Connection got good reviews on Angies list so I called them about working on my front porch. It is a 15'x8' concrete porch with iron railings. I was looking to get the railings removed and to resurface the concrete with something decorative. I also wanted to have wood or stone benches with planter boxes built in place of the rails. I thought an outdoor living specialist would have some good ideas regarding this project. I called the phone number on the website but did not get anyone. This seems common for these types of contractors, but most have some type of answering machine or service. Maybe I didnt let the phone ring long enough but it was a little frustrating not being able to even leave a message. The website was pretty nice though and allowed me to send an email. I described the project briefly and asked for someone to come take a look. Barry got back to me the same day, via email, but was not willing/able to bid on the project. I'm guessing it was too small for him which is a little frustrating for me but I understand from his point of view. He gave me an alternate name and number which I appreciated. I probably wont call the alternate contractor but it was better than nothing at all. A few other contractors didnt even respond, so I give Barry credit for responding back to me with an alternative. I would probably try him again although I doubt I have any project that would fit his company.
Description of Work: I sent an email request for a quote for remodeling of my concrete porch. Barry got back to me the same day by email declining to bid on the project but gave me an alternate contractor.
