I am just confused as to what could cause the odor.
Description of Work: The provider was called because of an odor coming from the main kitchen sink on the first floor. A kitchen sink was installed in the basement, however concern was that the installed sink drain was connected to a vent pipe instead of a drain. The plumber said the installation was correct. However after smelling the odor of concern he had no idea where the smell could be coming from. Chris, the plumber, did offer some suggestions which we later tried yet the odor is still there. So no actual work was performed and we paid for the service call. The lady who took our call, Michelle as well as Chris the plumber were excellent people to deal with and very pleasant. I would not hesitate to call Alpha Plumbing again for any work needed as they are really nice to deal with. I am still concern as to where the odor is coming from and will try other methods to get rid of the smell. Chris did offer to snake the line for additional cost but felt that it was not necessary.

We have had a few plumbers come look at our constantly gurgling plumbing at the office. Alpha was the first company who seems to have actually fixed the problem. Very responsive, very professional. Will definitely use again.

Called when we discovered our sump pump was no longer running. Even though they were busy because of all the plumbing problems people were having due to the prolong cold, they were able to come out the next day and replace our sump pump. Very professional people. Thanks Bob

I messaged Alpha Plumbing regarding a small plumbing issue that I came across during my bathroom remodel expecting to utilize their services. I explained the issue (which evidently was a fairly common one) and John promptly responded with advice to take care of the problem myself. I took his advice and proceeded to complete the project without any further problems. Simply put, John and Alpha Plumbing could have easily misled me into believing my problem needed professional assistance. Instead, John provided me with the information I needed to take care of the job myself. Quite refreshing. I will certainly call Alpha first should any major plumbing issues arise in the future.

I called the morning after one of the several sub-zero nights we have experienced recently. I expected that I might not get an appointment that day. The bathtub had water standing in it from the previous night. The person I spoke to was very nice and helpful and said they would send someone out that afternoon. Brian arrived during the window they had offered and quickly identified the issue. He discussed it with me and provided several remedies at a range of costs. I mentioned the sink in the same bathroom was draining a bit slowly and he took care of that as well. I thought the cost of the service call was very reasonable. I have used several different plumbing companies and found Alpha to be the fairest and nicest to work with. I will definitely call them again!!
Description of Work: I contacted Alpha due to a non-draining bathtub.

After receiving an exceptionally high water bill, I noticed water seeping up out of the ground near my foundation where the main line enters the house. I called a total of three plumbers, including Alpha for quotes. Chuck - Alpha's owner - came out to assess my situation and provided a quote. Chuck was on time, thorough, and helpful. Alpha Plumbing came in with the least expensive bid of the three plumbers and seeing that I have used them before for a smaller job (and my parents have called on their services a few times as well), I went with Alpha for the job. I was not actually present the day the job occurred, but my mother was. From what I can see, everything went exactly as outlined and I no longer have to worry about any BPE line on my premises. Thank you Alpha!

Alpha was most helpful when I called after hours and they told me how to shut off my main water valve to stop the flooding. Alpha then promptly came out the next day to fix the pipe. While looking for the leaking pipe, the plumber alerted me that he had accidently cut a wire and that I needed an electrician to fix it. He told me that since it was an accident (he didn't know the wire would be there) that he was not responsible to pay for its repair. The plumber also said he talked to his supervisor that agreed with him that Alpha was not liable. The wire he cut (using a saw) was located next to the electric panel. Since the frozen busted pipe was going under my homeowners insurance, I called USAA home insurance and was instructed to hire and pay for the electrician if the plumber refused. USAA is going to contact the plumber for the electrician's bill ($289.75) payment. The electrician bill was high because it was a Friday night and emergency fee (freezing weather and could not go without heat.) I've been told by several people that it is common knowledge NOT to use a saw by an electric panel, a razor should have been used to open wall to look for the pipe. The contractor who came in to clean up the water damage (flooded basement and part of kitchen) placed industry grade dehumidifiers to get rid of water, but the kitchen floor boards were not drying. They found another frozen pipe that busted and had not been found and continued to leak on my floor. Needless to say, I contacted another plumber to make the repair.
Description of Work: I had a frozen pipes bust that needed to be found and fixed. I immediately called Alpha, because I used them in the summer of 2013 and had a very positive experience (as written in my July 2013 review.)

We are disappointed that your review of us is so poor. You called me the night before our plumber came to your home in a panic because your house was flooding and you could not turn off the water. I stayed on the phone with you for about 15 minutes and helped you locate your shut-off valve to stop the flooding. Then we set up a service call for the next day, which you acknowledged was helpful. Our plumber came to your home the next day and began searching for the leak. Since the water was leaking from the ceiling, he cut the first hole in the ceiling near the electrical panel using a Stanley model #20-556 - 6" FATMAX® Jab Hand Saw which is the proper tool to use to open holes in finished sheetrock. He did not find the leak in the first hole and had to make other holes before finding the leak in the wall below the ceiling (the water had sprayed up into the ceiling). He repaired the leak on the 1/2" CPVC line and after the glue dried turned the water back on. Immediately, he heard the water running and upon investigation found a second leak in a crawlspace which did not have sufficient access to the pipe. My plumber had to take apart a brick wall to create an opening large enough to crawl up into the space to replace a twelve foot section of 3/4" CPVC which had also frozen. After the second repair he turned on the water again. The water came up to full pressure and he could hear that the water had stopped running indicating there were no other leaks at that time. Once the water was on he asked you to go around your home and open faucets to bleed the air out of the lines which you did and you indicated everything was working. After you bled the air from the lines my plumber could hear that the water in the pipes had stopped and saw no other signs of leaks at that time. My plumber did nick an electric wire with a hand-operated drywall saw and even though he did not sever the line and the circuit was still working he informed you about the problem and suggested you call an electrician to repair the wire to prevent future problems. Please realize (1) we cut holes in your drywall and we do not patch drywall, (2) we removed a section of a brick wall and we do not cement them back together and (3) we nicked an electric wire and we do not make electric repairs. Had we not been actively searching for a leak to return water service to your home the wire would not have been nicked. My plumber did use the proper tool to open holes in sheetrock and he did use caution, but sometimes damage is done to other parts of the home when repairing plumbing. You have sheetrock damage to be repaired and a brick wall that was removed and yet you had no complaints about your responsibility to repair them. Accidentally cutting an electric line while searching for a leak is an occasional consequence of opening sheetrock and we do not take responsibility for the cost of repairing it just as we do not repair sheetrock and brick walls. But what we do is act responsibly by informing you of the problem so that it can be addressed safely by an electrician of your choice. We do work for many customers who turn to their insurance companies to pay for the damage to their homes caused by frozen pipes. And the standard practice is that the insurance company covers the cost of replacing all damaged items associated with the leak which would certainly include the electric line in your home. If your insurance company refuses to help cover the problem we will gladly talk to them on your behalf as we do with many of our customers. Brian, my plumber who responded to your call, is an excellent plumber who consistently demonstrates exceptional skill in the plumbing trade. Yes, he cut the wire, it happens sometimes even to the best of us, we don't have x-ray vision and he did the right thing by informing you of the problem. Finally, you mentioned that after we left you experienced another leak in a frozen line. After Brian had repaired the two leaks and you bled the air from all your fixtures he heard the water stop and there were no more visible leaks. We are sorry that you experienced another leak after we left and if the leak was on the new pipes we installed we will reimburse you if the mistake is ours. But if another leak developed after we left on another section of pipe we did not work on that is not our responsibility, we cannot fix what we cannot see. By analogy, if you had a flat tire fixed and drove a mile down the road and got another flat in another tire, you wouldn't expect the repair facility to fix the second flat for free. Similarly, another leak discovered later is another leak and if you would have called us, we would have returned and fixed it and waived our service fee since we had just been to your home. We understand that having your home destroyed by broken plumbing pipes that flood your home is very frustrating. However, we feel we responded appropriately and performed the work in accord with commonly accepted trade practices. We would perform the work the same way in our own homes if we were to experience a similar incident.

I'm sorry our estimate was so far off our competitor's. As estimating is as much art as science, different estimators will see different things or make different assumptions when computing the cost of a job. Typically our estimates are competitive and we strive to be fair.

Andrew was great. Most pleasant and knowledgeable. He got the hot water flowing and seems to have solved the toilet problem, quickly and carefully.
Description of Work: Our hot water was not running. Andrew checked the pipes and found where he suspected the pipe had frozen. He used heat to thaw the pipe and after suggested we insulate that area. As my husband is unable to do that type of work, Andrew used some insulation we had left over from a project and he actually put it in the space it was needed. He then had a moment to check out a newer toilet we had that was not flushing correctly. As a side note, due to the severe weather, we were not expecting service until the next day. Michele, the office gal, checked with her boss who changed a non - emergency appointment around. Andrew was at the house in just a few hours. Michelle is most plea t to speak with.

I live in an older home and plumbing valves are gradually having to be replaced. Alpha plumbing replaced two valves for me for less than half the price that Len The Plumber charged for two other valves earlier in the year. Alpha Plumbing did a great job, were able to come out right away and the plumber was very informative and helpful. Highly recommend!

Chris and Matt provided fast, affordable service on a difficult installation of two toilets. The previous homeowners did not properly seat the existing toilets and we did not know we had a slow leak from each one. We bought two new toilets but were unable to install them when we discovered each flange was completely rusted out. We also had significant rotting of our subfloor. Alpha plumbing came out expecting a basic install, so when they told me about all the work required to install the new toilets, I could feel my heart racing and palms begin to sweat as I worried about the price. However, Alpha Plumbing's hourly rate is quite reasonable and Chris and Matt were able to complete the job in the least invasive way possible while also saving time, keeping costs much lower than expected. They also left everything looking clean as if nobody had ever been there. I have other plumbing projects down the road and I will be sure to hire Alpha Plumbing in the future.

The master bath toilet was leaking. The toilet was a strange brand. Buddy tried to find a replacement part but since it was such a weird brand, he couldn't find one. Plumber called then showed up on time was very helpful. He also walk me through the process of what he was doing and explained what he did. Also answered some unrelated questions I had about plumbing and other things in my house. He also pointed out that my heating tank was a little older and that I should think about replacing it soon. He didn't make a sales pitch for his company doing the work for that but just general recommendation. As a new first time homeowner it was a great experience. The price was fair and I would definitely use this company again for my plumbing needs.

I emailed Alpha Plumbing through Angie's list and had a reply within the hour and someone scheduled to come give an estimate within a few days. They arrived on time and explained what they were going to do. We agreed on the price of the BasePump installation and agreed that the original sump pump (~20 years old) would be replaced. They started working right away and had both installations completed and tested that day. We have not had the need for the BasePump to turn on yet (thank goodness), but the new sump pump is doing a much better job than we had before. Thank you Alpha Plumbing!

Alpha was the second plumber that we had come to examine a very slowly draining kitchen sink. The first plumber came out and snaked the line on two occasions, the owner coming out (free) after those 2 visits failed to solve the problem. After cleaning the drainpipe, they thought the problem had to do with the drain system leading out to a old drain field (which was within code when the house was built), with the pipe probably corroded away. They suggested a plan to connect to our sewer line (meeting current code) but would have probably entailed digging and tearing our part of the slab and interior floors, an enormously involved and expensive proposition. I thought it was time for another opinion, really just looking for a better way to correct the problem they described. Alpha's owner returned my call, listened to my description of the problem, and asked very good questions. He sent a plumber out who snaked the line with what appeared to be a much heavier snake. He verified that the drain line did not connect to our sewer line but probably to a drain field, However, he did not think the pipe was destroyed, just not cleaned enough. He also suggested a much simpler way to connect to the sewer system if it needed to be replaced. After two weeks, the drain is still performing like new. He also suggested an enzyme drain cleaner that is available online to maintain all the drains in the house. I showed him the enzyme cleaner we use, and he explained why the other one would be more effective. Both the owner and the plumber asked great questions and showed that they really knew what they were doing, even though the pipes, after the first 18" or so, were unavailable for inspection and the high-tech locator they brought would not fit through the older pipes, which were smaller. The plumber explained everything he was doing to me, and everything made great sense. It was obvious that they had experience with difficult plumbing challenges and with older houses. I wish I had called them first.

This provider was the first to respond to my request for information on a water line installation job for an ice maker. We exchanged several emails (he gave me his personal email and he has mine as well). He was prompt in his replies. I asked him what additional information he needed from me, and I gave him this information. This emailing went on the better part of this morning. When I asked him if he would charge more to come to my location, he abruptly said my location is "not in his service area" and ended with "Sorry". He also gave me a wide range when bidding on the job. Said it would be anywhere from $200 to $450. In my opinion, that's a heck of a big margin for him to play with. More than double the lowest amount. Bottom line.....He should have checked my location prior to wasting my time.

I'm sorry to have wasted your time. Since our service area is part of our Angie's List profile, we assume that when someone contacts us via their website they are in our service area. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. As far as the wide range of the estimate, we can only go by what we are told. Without seeing the actual work situation we can only provide a range. We go by what is typical and then try to ascertain some details that may narrow down the range. Our goal is to be fair in our pricing. If we arrive on site and see that an estimate we provided over the phone or by email is way off base, we let our customer know the real situation and go from there. Regards, John

Dan was very professional and accommodating, quickly troubleshooting the issue. Finding the necessary parts was the biggest issue. The cartridge was known to be in stock about 5 miles away, but rather than pay plumber rates to just drive there and back I opted for a second house call. Also, he said there was the risk that it was not the correct cartridge. As I only have one bath, he reinstalled the cartridge until the next visit. I also opted to replace my shower head and faucet in addition to the cartridge. A week later, the parts were in and Dan quickly replaced everything and expertly caulked the affected parts. The second appointment was a slightly reduced rate from the first, but it may have been more economical to get the cartridge on the first visit. Regardless, the shower works exceptionally well and I'm very happy with it.
