The job started out with thoughts of a simple faucet and valve replacements. Then reality set in, almost all of the pipes were original and had to be replaced. This extended the scope and duration of the job into a second day. Before he left on the first day, the kitchen and both bathrooms were fully functional. The faucets I bought did not fit the smaller hole of the 60's era ceramic sinks. Bryan got faucets of the same make and style that did fit. The scope creep raised the price above the original estimate, but that was understandable and acceptable. He was honest and said I would have to fix any holes that might need to be cut in the walls and ceilings. Fortunately, there were enough access panels so no holes had to be cut. There is one more bathroom to be updated and I be asking for Bryan again! The dogs are looking forward to seeing him again as well :-)
Description of Work: Brought a kitchen, two bathrooms (pink tile!), and a laundry room with 1960's era plumbing standards up current standards. The faucets, water supply lines and drain pipes were replaced for the kitchen and three bathroom sinks. The dishwasher plumbing was replaced, including the pipes under the floor. The old dishwasher removed and the new dishwasher was installed. The slow running bathtub drain pipe was unclogged and the leaking pipes under the shower were replaced. The laundry tub was removed and a new one with new valves was installed. The clogged drain pipe from the laundry tub was cleared out.

The plumber was on time and very friendly/professional. He was thorough in his checks of the water heater (no problem was found) but he did check and found a problem with the valve on one of my bathtubs. That is working fine now. The pipe was also replaced. It works well, too.

The entire experience was fantastic from my initial call to the reasonable cost. Buddy was my plumber and he was prompt, professional, personable and extremely competent. The plumbing for one of the hose bibs was located in an unfinished area of the basement and Buddy had that one replaced in no time. The other was hidden behind a finished ceiling. Buddy was able to locate that one, cut a very small 6" by 6" hole, and replace the hose bib promptly even though it was wedged between a floor joist and air conditioning ducting. Alpha Plumbing will be the only company I call in the future for any of my plumbing needs.

Alpha plumbing was easy to communicate with, professional, and thorough. They gave me a quote on the phone initially, and I called back and asked for the quote in writing when they were so much lower than companies that came out to give me a written estimate. Upon this request they scheduled someone to come out and confirm and ended up giving me the same quote. They scheduled the work right away and were on time the day of the service. The work was completed in a timely matter and all materials were cleaned up. My biggest complaint was that drywall was purposely left off the wall the sink was to be installed on but the water pipes were installed on top of the finished wall to the left of the sink. I assumed water lines would have been installed behind the sink, but I guess I should have reviewed that with them prior to the work being done. The wall behind the sink was since finished and the water lines with forever be exposed, which is not what I expected. The sink drain leaked water on the floor beneath it, and they came out right away and fixed the issues. I would use them again in a heartbeat, I would just make sure to be very specific when talking through expectations before work is completed.

My garbage disposal after 20+ years finally went belly up. Called Chuck and arranged to have a new one put in. Buddy came out and as he always has when coming out did a great job. It didn't take him long to take the old one out & the new one in. My little dog even felt comfortable enough around him that he climbed in his lap as he was installing the disposal. I've been using Alpha Plumbing for several years and wouldn't think of calling anyone else.

I first called Alpha to investigate an intermittent sewer smell coming from inside the house. We hadn't really noticed any other plumbing issues but trying to locate the source of the odor was driving us crazy. I must first mention that the plumbing in our house has always been a challenge since it rests on an inaccessible slab foundation. On his initial visit Buddy patiently listened to our concerns and suggested we first try a smoke test to locate the source of potential sewer gas leak. He explained that this was the least costly move and usually produced good results. He did locate a seal leak in an upstairs toilet, which he then replaced. He suggested we then keep an eye on things and pay attention to what we are doing in the house (running dishwasher, d*** laundry, etc.) when/if we noticed the smell again and to call him if it returns. A month passed and the odor would return occasionally, seemed to be getting stronger and was accompanied by a slow kitchen drain. We tracked the activities as Buddy suggested and suspected the odor was coming from an area near the dishwasher. It was time to call him back. Buddy again listened to our concerns, snaked the drain and hit a trouble spot. He cleared the drain but suspected it was being caused by a broken/leaking sewer line and suggested running a camera in the line from the kitchen and proceeding from there. We scheduled that visit for later in the week and asked that he be prepared to begin repairs immediately if he found a break. Buddy returned with the camera a week later and explained step-by-step what he would be doing. Since the kitchen was the trouble spot he started there and found a very badly damaged pipe that turned out to be under the fireplace hearth in the next room. He explained the options, gave me an estimate of time/expense involved and got to work. Since the entire pipe ran under the fireplace hearth we agreed it was best to tunnel under, cap the bad pipe, and run a newer, more direct, line from the kitchen to the main sewer line. He cut a hole in the concrete slab floor in the family room, tunneled under the hearth, and found the problem pipe. He then capped it off, refilled the hole, laid new concrete to close it all back up. On the outside he broke through the concrete foundation, ran a new pipe from the sink out to the main line. He did this all in 8 hours. I have to say we were a bit apprehensive about how this would all work but Buddy did an excellent job explaining everything. His patience with my questions was very much appreciated. He knew I wanted to take pictures so I could share them with my significant other who couldn't be home at the time so he made sure to come and get me at critical junctures in the process. The odor is gone and it is a huge relief. I'll use Alpha again for all of my future pluming needs.

Ours was not a simple job in that the terra cotta drain to be replaced ran under a large brick porch, the porch's brick steps, and about 50 ft of concrete sidewalk. Charles Taylor the owner came out and ran a video camera through the through the 90ft long line all the way to the street where it connected to the county's drain. He determined that the the line sagged where it went under he porch causing the sewage to collect there which was the reason we were having to clean out the line every year or so. We were hoping to be able to do a trenchless replacement of the line where they would dig a pit at the street and a pit at the house and thread the new PVC line between the pits through the old terra cotta line, but because the line sagged that wouldn't work. So, to avoid the porch, the steps and the sidewalk they rerouted the line where it exited at the house foundation, sending it instead under our lawn which could be dug up. A big consolation was that they could use the trenchless method to to run the last 10 ft of line up to the house thus leaving untouched all of our mature foundation plantings . They dug a pit in the lawn 10 ft out from the house; it was deeper than the footer of the house foundation, i.e. about 10 ft deep. The other pit they dug inside the house, jackhammering about a 3x4 ft hole in the concrete floor where it met the wall. They then jackhammered a new opening through the footer big enough to run the new line through. From the outside pit they then used a pipe-burster to drill a hole from that pit towards the new hole in the foundation footer, and ran a section of new line through the hole into the house and connected it to the old cast iron drain running undr the basement floor. To run the other 50 ft of line from the pit outside the house out to the county drain they had to use a backhoe to dig a trench, probably 10-12 ft deep, through the lawn. That's a LOT of dirt, but they were as careful as they could be in digging, laying the line and putting the dirt back. It took two days to complete everything, but they did a temporary hookup of water and sewage that first night so we were ok. They might have finished it all in one 12 hour day had the basement footer not been so incredibly hard, like granite -- they had to work for hours to break through it. Once everything was hooked up again, they backfilled the hole in the basement floor with crushed stone and layed in a new layer of cement over that. There were four or 5 men on the crew and they were all fantastic, working almost two 12 hour days in temperatures reaching into the high 90's, to get the job done. They were professional, polite, courteous, gladly answered all our questions and concerns, and were very respectful of our property. Our basement is fully finished, furnished, and carpeted, so I was really nervous that stone dust from the jackhammering would be a nightmare to clean up. When I talked to Chuck about this he said they use a less messy kind of jackhammer to dig up inside homes, and to just put up plastic sheeting around the area they would be working in. I taped lots of sheeting up to the ceiling aroud the area, and also taped loose pieces of it over doorways, and draped and taped it over all the furniture. They had to pull back a corner of the carpeting and underlayment to dig the pit and I layed sheeting over the folded back carpeting. To my happy surprise he was right. 24 hours after they poured the cement patch, it had dried, so I put back the folded back carpeting. There was very little dust, but I decided to do a quick wipe-down of the paneled walls with a little Mr Clean in a bucket of water. Honestly, when I finished you wouldn't know anything had happened! As for the lawn, we waited a few weeks before leveling and reseeding it. Unfortunately hurricane Sandy blew in shortly after that, causing a lot of settlment, and we had to regrade and reseed again, but it looks fine now and we are thoroughly enjoying our trouble-free drain!

The removal & installation of the dryer was short & sweet. However, the manufacturer supplied GE universal gas & dryer duct kit was flimsy & cheaply made. In fact, the semi-flexible aluminum pipe had a few staple holes in it. After installation, Dan suggested that the semi-flex pipe be replaced by a ridged metal "hard pipe" instead. I think I agree with him! Both John (on the phone) & Dan are very professional. Alpha Plumbing provided good/CLEAN service and I would recommend this company.

The plumber came right on time. He needed to order the part and said he would call when it came in, which might take a week or so. He actually called the next day saying he had obtained it. He came back that afternoon and installed it. He was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable and the service was performed well. The only negative was the price. I bought the special $129 service call and first half hour of service from Angie's List, but he was here only a few minutes, yet charged another service fee the next day, when he was again here only a few minutes. I think he could have waived the second service fee. I received a refund for the second service call fee which I appreciated very much.

I reviewed the details of the call and found that the plumber charged the homeowner the correct amount based on our pricing policy. When we have to return to a home to install a special-order part (one not typically stocked on our trucks), we do charge a reduced service call fee for the return visit. No plumber can possibly stock every item on their trucks, but we do stock a long list of common items. And there is a real cost associated with returning to a home which is greater than just the amount of time on site. But with all that said, I believe we should stock on our trucks the part that the homeowner required and we will begin to that. So, I have issued a refund for that portion of the invoice for the second service call.

To note preliminarily, I have had several prior visits from Alpha Plumbers in the past 2-3 years and have been satisfied with their services. I was especially impressed with the work "Buddy" did to fix plumbing issues that seemed very difficult to fix, and to "make it work" without overcharges. When my sink faucet became loose and my toilet tank did not stop filling with water recently, I called Alpha Plumbing and tallked to "Michelle." She scheduled me for 2-6-15 with "Dan." Dan came around the appointed time and told me he could not fix the faucet because I did not have the tightening tool that came with it, and that I would need to get a new faucet. Regarding the toilet tank, Dan replaced the toilet tank parts inside which fixed the water stoppage problem. He then told me the toilet was now leaking. He said he had put yellow dye in the water to test it, and showed me where there was yellow water on the floor next to the toilet. I told him it had never leaked before and that I did not want him to fix the leak since I would prefer to replace the entire toilet if it was leaking. He went back to his truck to fill out the bill and came back to charge me $182.92 including $32 for materials. I paid the bill but was not happy since he did not fix the faucet and apparently broke my toilet which was not leaking at all prior to his visit. I called Alpha back and talked to Michelle. I asked her to go ahead and schedule me the following Monday (today), to replace the toilet with a Kohler model they carry and to install the new faucet which I will purchase on my own. I asked for someone other than "Dan," and asked for "Buddy" since I had very positive prior experiences with Buddy as described above. Michelle said she would send Buddy. Over the weekend, I kept checking the toilet for the alleged leak and found it to be bone dry despite numerous flushings. I therefore called Michelle this morning and informed her that I will not need the toilet replaced because it is not leaking, contrary to what Dan had told me. I wanted to let them know so no one will have to haul a toilet into my apartment for naught. She said she understood. Around 11:30 AM, "Andrew" (not Buddy, who Michelle had said would be coming) called and said he was on his way. He arrived around the appointed time of noon. He brought another person with him, so I noted somewhat jokingly that I did not think this was a two-person job. Andrew explained that the other person was just accompanying him because he was needed for a subsequent job they had in the afternoon and assured me that I would not be charged for the extra person. Prior to Andrew's arrival, I cleaned out the stuff under the sink (as I had done with Dan) and laid out the pieces of the new faucet. Andrew had no problem installing the faucet within a few minutes. He then went back to his truck to prepare the bill. Andrew came back with a bill of $179 including $50 for the extra person. When I asked why I was charged the extra $50 when he had specifically told me I would not be charged for the extra person, Andrew responded that the other person did in fact help him so I was charged. This was directly contrary to his prior assurances. $179 and two plumbers to install a simple faucet? Really?! So now I had Dan who OVERCHARGEd me with a $183 bill after NOT fixing the faucet and FALSELY telling me my toilet was leaking. And then I had Andrew who also OVERCHARGEd me for an extra person's labor that did not need, after he specifically told me I would not be charged for the extra person. Based on these two negative back-to-back experiences, I decided to write this review to let others know that Alpha Plumbing's practices have apparently changed for the worse. Perhaps their good rating in Angie's List and concomitant expansion have caused this deterioration; who knows? In any event, I believe their practices are no longer honest and wanted to let others know and beware.

Thank you for submitting your review. There are a couple issues I would like to address. Regarding the faucet, it had no brand name indicated on it and the tool required to fix it is proprietary and was unavailable. We did not have any option to repair it. Andrew replaced it promptly upon his arrival on our second visit once you had the new faucet on site. When Dan arrived to repair the toilet it had been running constantly for several days and was obviously in disrepair. He reviewed the work with the homeowner and got her approval to do the work which included replacing parts in the tank – one of which was the flapper. So after finishing the work on the tank Dan wanted to be sure the new flapper was not leaking and conducted a dye test (it was not leaking). However, when he flushed the toilet he noticed the dye appearing at the base of bowl. He discussed this with the homeowner and she thought the best option was to replace it rather than pull the toilet, inspect the flange (and repair if necessary), replace the wax ring, reset the toilet, and install new closet bolts to hold it firmly in place. Even if water cannot be seen currently, we are confident the toilet is still leaking. The water may just be leaking downward now and not be evident at the floor. Nevertheless, Dan did not break it or attempt to deceive the customer. There were 45 minutes billed for the first trip along with the parts – not out of line for the work done. Regarding the second visit, Buddy was originally scheduled for the visit, but called out sick that morning. We reassigned his calls as appropriate and Andrew was assigned this one. There was no mal-intent here. Regarding the billing for the helper, he was assigned to help Andrew get the toilets moved (there is no parking on site with adequate clearance for our trucks and the apartment is on the 7th floor). They left our shop before the homeowner called. So he was with Andrew for the day. Because of the confusion, I have refunded the amount in question. We typically charge for a helper when the help he provides is either a necessary safety or manpower requirement or he enables the work to be done more quickly and it ultimately lowers the overall bill.

I called 3 companies for estimates; one big and advertises on TV and wanted $2500. Also charged $29 for the estimate. The 2nd company is well known locally and estimated about $1,400 but didn't get back to me right away. The 3rd company was one I looked at after combing Angie's list looking for companies with solid reviews and is the one I selected, They promptly responded to my questions and were quite professional and pleasant to deal with. The appt was for 8:30 on a date I chose and the plumber called at 9 to say he'd be there in an hour, and he was. He surveyed my site, listened to me explain what I needed (a clothes chute that is right next to the heater needed to remain workable) and he went off to work. It took about 2:30 hours to go from start to finish, and the job site looked better than when he arrived. The heater works fine and we now have the tray in case of any future problems to mitigate water leak problems. The heater is a good one, I looked it up and it was in line with what the other companies were proposing. The price was competitive, the work done well, fast and the pre-work contact was professional and quick.
Description of Work: Installed new water heater with 10 year warranty, added expansion tank, added a water heater tray and connected it to an existing pipe to the sump and took away the old heater.
