The work ended up great, although I didn't realize that they were coming from so far away so there was an additional fee. They installed drywall in one room, and the end result was decent (B+). They were very knowledgeable and helpful in answering my questions. They did a good job communicating about the work.

If I were Angie's List I would reconsider having you as a client! I made numerous visits to your home. You live on the end of the row of brick homes. 1st, we talked about your small bathroom. 2nd, we talked about your garage and the work that needed to be done on both the interior & exterior. Then on another trip we discussed your kitchen & what could be done. Did you have a lapse of memory about the Saturday morning I came over & picked you up so we could look at granite countertops. I did all that for you & you told me you wanted to wait because you didn't have the money right now. I give you an "A" for presenting the best fictional victim story.

1st let's set things straight. Your wife Mary hire me to renovate your basement. If I remember both of you were very pleased with the professional work that was done. I even had my carpet sub give you a great deal on new carpet for the basement. Then your wife Mary hire me again to install new blown insulation into your attic because it was not to code. Again both you & she was very happy with the job. Now to the egress window in question. Yes your wife gave me a deposit to start the project. Then if you remember we had two delays - 1 Howard Co. wouldn't issue a permit because your old well had not been capped. So with the help of your wife family members & a hand drawn map we located the old well. I then contacted Jones's Well Service & they came & sealed your old well. I then was able to have the Co. issue me the necessary permit to proceed. 2- After all of that your wife asked me if we could wait until she came home from the hospital. I agreed to wait. This was March 2013. I called & spoke to your wife but she was still in the hospital. She told me someone will contact me. Well that call sometime around the end of Sept. or beginning of Oct. 2013. At this time you told me your wife had passed away. You stated that you still wanted the widow install. At that time I told you in would be a month or so. Then winter set in with sever cold weather. I told you that it would have to wait until Spring. You insisted that it be done now. I stated that the ground was frozen. If you wanted I would give you a refund of the remaining deposit. This was the last communications except for a few e-mail. As far as not being able to contact me, you have both of my phone numbers & my e-mail address. Oh by the way I save all e-mail communications!

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. He came out 2 weeks after I purchased the deal. I think that he was qualified as a handyman. My complaint is that the location of where he was coming from is well north of Baltimore so they do charge a fuel service charge for certain distances that they go. I got this fuel charge, not knowing how far he actually was away from my place of residence. They did not mention that they would charge me. I didn't like how he did one of the items in the repair. I'm very happy that he did the small jobs, I didn't think he would do it. One of the things I wanted him to do was we had some mold that had grown above the ceiling, between the first and second floors, because of a leaky pipe. I was hoping that he would cut out the section of the drywall especially since it was a little soft and a little mist at the time and kinda put up a small section of drywall. All he did was put Killz on top of it which basically stops the existing mold from getting any further but it doesn't eradicate the problem on the other side of the ceiling. I asked him why he didn't cut out the small part of the ceiling and he didn't really give me a great answer. He called us that he was coming and letting us know how far away he was.
Description of Work: I used Des-Met Construction for 3 hours of handyman work. They charged me $20-50 for the fuel charge. He did some spackling work, fixed a couple of door hinges that were coming loose, put together a ping-pong table in our basement.

Description of Work: I used Des-Met Construction LLC. He did some ladder stuff that I could not handle; it included hanging a lot of pictures, mirrors, curtain rods, curtains, and some house numbers outside the house. He also had to level the hardware for hanging the pictures and so on.

There were some charges for bolts and miscellaneous products they've used. This company subcontracted the work out to someone else. I don't think it was directly the company. They had someone else come out. It was a grandfather and a grandson and as far as professionalism they were very argumentative and it just didn't reflect well.

They arrived on time and completed the shutter replacement and the security light replacement satisfactorily on that day. They collected the materials for the access panel and were going to notify me when they would return to install the panel. I didn't hear from them for what I considered to be a reasonable period of time and tried to contact them by phone and email without success. About three months later, I found a cell number which I called and was able to reach the owner. When I explained the problem, he was surprised and said that the thought that the work had been completed by his assistant some time ago and said that the assistant had left his employment shortly after they had done the work for us. The owner then came out and installed the panel himself. The result was satisfactory. My main complaint is about the communication problems.

Des-Met Construction were pretty good. They're okay. There was an older person who was experienced and then there was like a younger person who was very inexperienced. They didn't seem to have tools on hand to the thing. It was a pretty simple thing, but it took a long time to do it because probably not the most perfect tools for the job. So they didn't get much done.

Charlie was very responsive at first. Came to our house to look at the jobs we needed done. Told us it wasn't enough and to make a "honey Do" list to get our moneys worth. We told him when we would like the services completed in a few weeks as we would be off. After that we could not reach him. Left many mesages on the office and cell. Even suggested we would go past the June 2nd deal cut off date if he would still honor it. Finally we had to turn to Angies list for assisatnce and they are working on the refund. Still have not heard back from him.

I called them soon after I bought the Deal and initially they were responsive and good about calling me back. I explained what I needed done and he confirmed they could do it. They said to call when I was ready to set the appointment. When I called back to actually set it up no one ever called me back. I even enlisted the help of Angie's List to reach them and they weren't even able to do so. I know it's a small company and they are probably extremely busy, but I would have appreciated a phone call just letting me know what's going on.

I purchased the big deal in the winter of 2012. One worker came out within a day after I called them because of a cancellation. He saw that the job required two people and he told me he would get back to me. I called the company several times to schedule the work. My wife called several times to schedule the work. They were extremely polite however their follow up was poor. Sometimes the weather worked against them when we were able to actually schedule the work. However, it should not have taken nearly six months to complete the work. The weather was not prohibitive every day for the last six months. My neighbors had similar work done on their houses within the same time frame while we were still waiting for the company to work on our home. Further they were physically unable to remove the satellite dish from my roof. A worker came out and saw what I wanted, if they were not able to do the work as I required then they should have told me so at that time. The gutter covers are not their fault, if they cannot be repaired then I fully understand. Reflecting back on the whole experience, I think the job was too big for them and if it was something that involved working on the ground or within the house, they would have been better suited.
Description of Work: I wanted to have vinyl siding that was blown off the side of my house replaced. I also wanted my gutter covers repaired as well as the removal of an old satellite dish removed off of my roof. The siding was placed upon the side of the house like I wanted. The gutter covers were not repairable according to the company. The dish was too high upon my roof for them to reach it.

I cannot remember which job came first, but after engaging him for one job on an Angie's List coupon, I engaged him on others. He gave me good advice on the foyer tile floor and dissuaded me from going with a tile that would likely have presented maintenance and cleaning problems.
Description of Work: Charlie did several jobs for me to get a house ready to put on the market: installed a new foyer tile floor, painted a wall and a bathroom, installed a new light fixture in the bathroom, installed an address sign, fixed a faucett leak, et al. He also installed new tile floors in two bathrooms in a townhouse. His work has always been of dependable quality and done on time.

The company called to get some information about the project we were doing. We gave them a description of what we wanted to do and he said he would call us back. He never got back to us. I called 3 times with no response. Finally I got a hold of him and he tried to charge me extra for travel charges. After I told him I do not want to use his service anymore, he explained that he could not do the job due to the time it would take. He wanted to point out that there would be a $30 per trip charge, which I was not aware of. At one point in the conversation, he wanted to talk to my husband rather than me. I told him I wanted to cancel the contract.

Response from Des-Met Construction, LLC
Angie's list member is correct. We did contact her to established the extent of the work they were requesting to have done. They purchased two Storefront deals, 1. Four hours drywall repair and 2. Four hours of painting. Also what was discussed was their location in reference to Des-Met Construction's office. She is correct in stating that there was a relapse from initial contact to our final contact. During last conversation, which I initiated, I again asked her about the work to be done. I was informed that there were numerous areas that the drywall had to be removed and replaced with new. Those areas then renew be painted. Being in the residential construction business for over 37 years I tried to explain to her sequence of events as far as repairing the affected drywall areas. I tried to explain to her that what she was asking done cannot be accomplished four hours. I told her that we would come remove the affected areas replace with new drywall, block, tape and apply first coat of drywall compound. I told her that this process would probably take up the whole four hours that she had purchased. To save for any additional cost I asked if her husband was handy. I told her that I would teach her husband how to apply the 2nd and 3rd coat of drywall compound. I would then come back and sand the affected areas that her husband had helped prepare for painting. Upon the second visit I would honor the four hours obtaining paint the affected area. After explaining to her the appropriate steps to achieve her final and result. She told me that she did not want her husband involved during any step of the job. To clarify one of her statements I never refused talking to her nor did I ever asked to talk to her husband. She told me that this is not how she understood it would work. I again explained to her that this is the way it needed to be done for the best end product. Her understanding was that this could all be completed in one 8 hour. I again explained that drywall repair was a three-step process. That the painting would have to be done at another time. She told me that if that was the case she wanted a refund. I told her I totally understood and that she was to contact Angie's list for that refund. In the matter of the trip charge, Angie's list allows for an extra fee to be charged if the mileage is greater than 50 miles from your office to the client zone. This member lives 72 miles from my office. I did tell her that there would be a $30 charge for each visit. She informed me that nowhere did she read about a trip charge and accused me of trying to extort more money from her. I politely told her that it was in the fine print portion of the Storefront deal. I even told her where to go to look for the aforementioned statement. I feel that the member had no clear understanding the work and time involved for what she was asking done. I'm personally offended with her accusation that I was trying to extort money from her in reference to the trip charges. Anyone who has dealt with Des-Met Construction knows that I am a person of integrity and would never do what she is proposing. I also find it an affront to Des-Met Construction in the fact that because she was not satisfied with my response to your request that she gave me an "F".

I purchased a Big Deal and called Des-Met. Ralph called me back and we talked about what I needed and set a date. Ralph and his son arrived promptly on the designated day (a Saturday between Christmas and New Year). They worked steadily and completed each task. The floor removal wasn't on my original list, but Ralph asked what else I needed because there was time left. I helped with the pedestal installation and I had to level it after they left. They left my large plastic trash can inside the house full of refuse from the tasks. (I didn't ask them to take it out, but I assumed they would. I noticed it in the house after they left rather in a hurry to get to a pre-scheduled family event.) For the next two months, my gas stovetop (in kitchen on ground floor) wouldn't light automatically; we needed to light it with a match. I finally realized that the plug for the stove's electronic ignition was left unplugged in the basement when the set tub surround was removed - the stove has worked fine since I plugged it back in! (The oven hasn't worked since Thanksgiving Day, but that's an unrelated story...) My only real complaint is this: The conditions for the Big Deal stated that customers outside of a 30-mile radius would be charged $10 extra. Before I bought it, I used Mapquest to check the distance from my house to the address listed for Des-Met, which was 29 miles and change - so I bought the Big Deal. Ralph reminded me of the charge when I called him, and I assured him that I had the Mapquest printout showing that my house was within the 30-mile radius. But he charged me the extra fee because HIS house was beyond the 30-mile radius - though I had no way of knowing that before I bought the Big Deal. I paid it "under protest." The deal was for 3 hours. If that means 3 elapsed hours, they worked a little less than that time (and as mentioned, they left in a hurry.) If that means two people for an hour and a half each (and that would be reasonable), they worked beyond that time without complaint or extra charge.
Description of Work: Removed the surround from a set tub in the basement laundry room; placed an existing pedestal under the washing machine (which didn't fit until the set tub surround was removed); removed damaged linoleum floor tiles in a small bathroom.

Mr. Charlie and his assistant arrived on time (in fact a few minutes ahead of schedule). They estimated what they would need and we set up a return time. On the way out his assistant fixed an outside gutter (I was quite pleased with that). If I recall the correct order of events: When they returned, a shower head was fixed, a leak in the bathroom was fixed, and a shower knob was replaced, which broke. The next trip he successfully replaced a faucet in a different bathroom. He removed the entire sink to replace the faucet. Unfortunately, one can tell that the sink was removed and replaced (it wasn't flush). Another knob was bought for the shower, that broke too. He realized it was the valve stem. He was always punctual and he liked to talk. Overall he did a decent job.
Description of Work: A shower head was changed. A leak under a bathroom sink, which involved some pipe cutting (I think) was fixed. A faucet was changed. An outside gutter was repaired. A shower knob was broken and a replacement knob was bought to replace it. That knob broke within two days. Another knob was bought and that broke too, the same day. He realized it was not the knob, but a valve stem, which has to be fixed.
