Contacted Gus by email (through Angie's site); he responded soon after and arranged a time to meet and provide an estimate of the repairs I thought needed to be done. Gus not only provided an estimate of the needed repairs (again, what I thought needed to be done), he also looked over the whole house, pointing out the construction (built in the late '80s, boom-period, and some of the errors and sloppiness of the construction. He even knew the construction company/developers, and correlated information I already had on them). Taking out a square, he demonstrated corners that weren't square. We quickly prioritized the work into manageable pieces, including some big ticket items he recommended NOT be repaired until a much later date. I have a friend who is a commercial mason, who validated Gus's estimate and advice. Gus and I established a timeline for the repair work (three consecutive Saturdays) which he stuck to, and the only deviation was due to the hard rains we had in July. Gus even came out (at 10pm) during one of the hard rains to ensure the open repair work was covered. Three of my neighbors were so impressed by C+G's work that they also hired them to complete similar repairs on their homes. Gus is best described as honest with a simple-straightforward attitude; combined with his candor and technical abilities, I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Description of Work: Repaired bed and joint mortar on large section of front stairway and corner of house; repaired loose railings by injecting high pressure concrete into base of railings; caulked cracks; most importantly, assisted in my understanding of concrete/brick construction (and pointed out what I didn't need to do!); cleaned up and power washed the stairs/wall repaired.

I had to go get my own bricks or I would be charged more. They originally said they were charging me a higher price because they had to put up scaffolding, but they never used any scaffolding. They still charged me the higher price.

Response from C & G Masonry Co INC
I had to match up the bricks on the chimney for a brick repair job. I found the bricks on line they were located in Martinsberg West Virgina I ask the customer if he wanted me to pick up the bricks for a fee. He said no I gave him the name and place where he can pick up the bricks. You cant just buy 12 you have to buy a whole strap of bricks of over size bricks of 84 in a strap. And we replace more then just 12 bricks. And we were going to build scaffold but we decided we can do it off a ladder. It was more difficulty on a ladder then on scaffolding. We got every thing done in one day cleaned up the entire job and wash everything down. At the time he was very happy with the job He even gave me a concrete bull float. Now I dont understand why he is upset on the cost. When you give a estimate to perform a job and you dont like the price then look for a better deal. I try to give the best price I can When the job is to small or to large I will work with customers to agree on a fair price on both parties. Angie List customers are very good.

We went with a personal recommendation but valued Chris and Gus enough that they would have been our top choice had we had a personal connection with them.
Description of Work: Came out and gave us an estimate on a basement retaining wall. We really liked Chris an Gus. They answered our questions and were very knowledgeable. We would consider them for all of our masonry projects.

Initially, C&G scoped out work to provide estimate and order lintel. However, they took a bit more time than we expected and they initially indicated to return and perform the work. Day of install, they removed broken lintel, but replacement lintel was found to be too large, and had to be sent back for recut. (We don't know if C&G measured it wrong in the first place, or if cutter simply didn't cut it to correct dimensions. But it was obvious once the broken lintel was removed that the replacement lintel was too large to put in the existing opening and be adequately grouted. However, C&G obtained the recut lintel the very next day and installed it. Installation was perfect, and they did an excellent job grouting it in. C&G also took extra precautions to avoid damaging plants in bed below window and lintel, and did an excellent job cleaning up afterwards. Overall, we'd rate their performance as very good, and definitely consider hiring them again.

They were very professional and easy to work with. We would definitely use this contractor again. They were very good at coordinating schedules during a period when we were having a lot of rain.
Description of Work: The work completed by C & G Masonry is high quality for a fair price. The contractor was able to get an idea of the job by viewing pictures of the stair / slate topper and brick / grout seams that needed work. The slate stair treads came loose due to application of ice melt, which degrades the mortar. There were also cracks in the joints between bricks in the walls. We agreed to proceed with his special of $499 and believe this is a fair price for the work. The contractor was here for a few hours one day and came back the next to clean everything up once the mortar set.

Appointment was cancelled 1 1/2 hours prior to the scheduled time (via email no less). It was suggested that I take pictures, send it to them and they would provide a quote. Part of the work involves the chimney, which I wasn't interested in climbing my roof to take pictures. So, I suggested we reschedule and the appointment was made for Saturday, May 17. We discusses the work involved. I was informed that the coupon would be applied to the chimney. Contract was drafted for $1700.00. The coupon would make it a total of $1000.00. The work included the the chimney flange and rake as well as the step to the front stoop. They showed up on Saturday on time and began work. They able to show me why front stoop stair deteriorated. The original workers had failed to level the concrete supporting the stoop to the step, prior to laying the bricks. C & G leveled the area and laid the bricks using a round mortise. C & G also replaced the chimney cap, repaired the flange, and replaced several bricks along the chimney's rake. The work took 3 masons about 6 hours. Excellent work and I plan to use them in the fall to take care of the stoop.

I contacted Gus and he came over the next day to see the project. His price was comparable to a first estimate we got but he had an Angie's List Big Deal which we bought and saved us $200. He had the work done within a week, which I felt was pretty fast. He had one man come and do the work and then that same afternoon Gus and his assistant came to look at what had been done and touched it up-this really impressed me! They told us not to walk on the brick for 2 days and at that time someone came back to wash the brick off and seal the deal.

I found the contractor on his website and he responded within 24 hours after I emailed his company with an estimate request. He came out the same day and we agreed on a price and I signed a contract. The work was to be done the next week if the weather permitted but rain delayed it one day. Gus and his co-worker finished the job in three hours and cleaned up all the debris. One to remember brick dust will go everywhere on a windy day. I had no problems with his company and would hire them again if needed.

Overall, very happy with the work. Chris came out over a weekend to meet with me and inspect what kind of repair work we needed done on the front porch. We knew it was in poor shape, so wasn't surprised when he said that he would have to remove all the old brick and relay new brick. He mentioned he was going to try and save the sides, but that may not be feasible. He was also going to try and save as many bricks as possible, so as to match the veneer of the house, but was concerned on the condition. While we were going to do this work, we decided to have our poured-concrete walkway replaced with brick too. Chris walked me through exactly what he would need to do and gave me 2 quotes (one for the front porch, one for the walkway) so we could decided what we could afford. We felt the price was fair, so we decided to do both at the same time. It took about about 5-6 weeks before work could get started (that's a good thing, tells me they do good work and are busy with other jobs). They ended up having to take down the sides of porch too, but didn't charge us extra for it. It took them a couple of weeks to do all the work (weather caused some delays), but no complaints here, the work is awesome! I believe they even got some additional jobs out of it in the neighborhood because of how well the work looked. My only complaint would be that they are not quite as punctual or good at giving time lines as I would like. However, they take their time with doing excellent work and take pride in their product. They do the right thing vs. the easy thing, and that is a very rare quality these days in contractors. I would highly recommend them!

Went well. The only delays were weather related. Chris stayed in touch with us via email. The crew including Chris worked very hard in very hot humid weather. The path and front step look excellent. But it was difficult to get clear documented response on what he actually had done in terms of the foundation for the front stoop.

Arrived on time to do estimate and provided a complete and thorough and competitive estimate Did not schedule a job right away but asked for a small deposit. Took some time, but did schedule a day to come and do the work. Arrived on time to complete work and Chris and his other men were extremely professional and respectful and did a very high-quality job. Had to come back the next day (and day after) which was unexpected to me. (Understandable considering the scope of the work; however, it would have been helpful had he told me that the job would take three days so I could schedule my office hours accordingly.

We did not pay the $150 but went with another contractor.
Description of Work: Contractor would not talk about the project on the phone when I called. Insisted on an email. I sent one describing the project. He emailed back and said it would cost me $150 to even come out for an initial consultation. Project was not a small project -- to build a 60-foot-long wall. I have dealt with countless contractors on renovating my home in the past two years and not one has asked to be paid for an initial consultation.

construction materials exact Bricks and mortar. We contracted with Cand G to repair our brickwall. They were puctual, professional, and hard working. The work was completed in good time to our great satisfaction. At the end of each day, the construction site was left in an orderly way. Attention was paid to details and he answered our questions and made suggestions in a polite and courteous msnner. We highly recommend this company in every way for those in need of masonry.
Description of Work: We got several estimates to repair the brickwall in our courtyard. CandG was the lowest by a considerable amount. It turned out to be a difficult job because the wall is old and it was impossible to find the same bricks and mortar. Chris laid bricks and tried different mortar three or four times until he was satisfied with the work. He more than exceeded our expectations.

Overall, I was pleased with the company and the services that they performed. They retouched all of the brick on our house which was very messy. They did a good job retouching the brick but it was a messy job. The brick dust from grinding down some of it did go all over our porch and the person who performed the job didn't immediately clean it which led to some problems removing it. They did respond to our request to help remove the dust from retouching the brick but by then when they tried to remove it it ended up removing some of the paint on our front porch so we had to repaint our front porch. Another problem we had was that the supervisor wasn't there one day and another employee started retouching some of the other brick that wasn't supposed to be done. The supervisor did help with retouching that brick at no extra cost. Some of the bricks were paved over as a means of repairing them but it's not as attractive as having brick. At the same time that they retouched some of the brick on a wall the metal rail on the stairs broke. I wasn't happy with that part of the job as the bricks wouldn't have been paved over if the employee was clear on what they needed to do. In any case, the company is professional, they do good work. I would just be careful to make sure that the employees do everything that they are supposed to do such as clean the dust from the job.

Response from C & G Masonry Co INC
Yes, I agree there was alot of dust everywhere, since we had to grind all the joints out on the house due to severe deterioation. Some of the paint did come off the front porch when we were cleaning up the job. It was old paint and some chips came off when we washed down the job. We did not offer to repaint since the porch was in need of repainting and the homeowner did inform me that she was going to repaint anyway. On the side of the house there is a walkout basement wall that needed work done, but we needed to keep the cost down. When my employee was grinding he made a mistake and grinded some of the walkout basement wall, which we repaired for free. Their was no extra damage done to the wall due from this. As for the rail this is the first time im hearing about it an the job has been completed over a year ago. We did notice that the rail was loose but this did not come from our work not sure if that what she is refering to.,

We were VERY happy with the job they did. They took great care to get all the details "right", and clearly knew their business. They were very patient as we finalized a walkway design. They readily adapted a few of the project details as they went along, as we saw the work and asked for minor adjustments.
Description of Work: Chris and company installed a paver front step and walkway, for our 40+ year old home. The job had some challenges. It required reinforcing an existing step, removing a concrete walkway, landscaping the new walkway area so that the new walkway would sit higher than the existing ground area, and aligning the walkway end with a to-be-installed driveway.
