They did the work--no complaints with that. But when they removed the drywall, they found that there had been a crack in the foundation wall (where we could clearly see water marks) rather than what they thought had been an upward seepage coming in, so the very expensive, destructive, dirty and messy French drain/sump pump they installed could have solved our problem with a $300 crack filler job. We paid $4000 for a service we didn't need. Not amused. If you need a drain service, I think they probably do pretty well. But find someone else to assess the problem. On the flip side, I accidentally bounced the check I wrote them, and it took a week to sort out an account problem, which is awful on my part. They were really nice about it on the phone. They had every right to be "pissy" but weren't, so I thank them very apologetically for that.
Description of Work: We had water coming into our basement and needed to address the source, prevent it, and remediate any mold that had built up.

Response from Value Dry Waterproofing
Thank you for providing feedback regarding your ValueDry experience. My name is James Ketterer, and I'm President here at ValueDry. Thank you for sorting out the bounced check issue. I reviewed your comments and your job file. I can understand why you feel that you were duped but I want to make sure you know this feeling is unwarranted. I do want to assure you that in order to be warrantied and to be confident enough to replace your drywall without risk of doing it all over again in a short period of time you needed the system which we recommended and installed in your home. Our crews often uncover cracks that are leaking when removing drywall in our customers homes. This is why we install safeguards to direct water seeping through cracks to our system. These safeguards were outlined and contracted for in your original agreement prior to us removing the drywall in case we found cracks upon its removal. Our inspector should have more clearly explained this to you during the inspection process and explained to you why even if that happens you still need the system which we installed. I will cover this with him in order to make sure it is more clear in his inspection process in the future. Our waterproofing systems address the leaking via those cracks in a warrantable manner. "Crack Filler" is what I call a "bubble gum" fix that will fail over time when a foundation moves or settles due to deep freezes, minor tremors etc... Also, crack filler is not a long term warrantable solution for foundation seepage. The solution that we installed in your home is not one of these "bubble gum" fixes, rather a warrantable solution for the lifetime you own the home and for the next homeowner which will be important when you sell the home. It is also important to note that you may be leaking from a crack in the wall as well as from the floor wall joint. Our system addresses both of those concerns. Should you want to discuss this further please feel free to contact the office and ask to speak with me directly regarding your concerns. I'm not sure whom told you that a $300 crack filler solution would have been sufficient but I can certainly explain to you why it is not a viable long term solution. Thanks Again - James Ketterer - President - ValueDry

The job went very well. They brought in a 7-man team and completed the job in two days, one day earlier than estimated. The workmen were courteous, clean and professional. The job foreman was very responsive to a couple of small issues and corrected them immediately. The installation works as advertised. We have had a couple of strong storms over the last few weeks and the crawl space is dry as a bone.
Description of Work: Value Dry fully encapsulated our crawl space, dug an interior drain and installed a sump pump. They removed bad insulation from the crawl space ceiling and put in new insulation on the walls.

Dug french drain along perimeter of basement, installed pipes and drain system to waterproof the basement. I had a very bad problem with mold, dampness, wet floors all the time, it was nasty down there. The basement is bone dry now. They also installed the EZ Breathe air cleaning system for me which takes all the bad smelling air and humidity out of the house. No more moldy stink or bad smell. No more wet basement. It really works! The french drain, the sump pump, the air system all together solved my problem. They did the whole job in 2 days and didn't leave a mess or bother me at all.

I took time off of work to meet the inspector and review our crawl space issues (damp, musty, etc....typical crawl space). After an initial discussion and an inspection of the space I expected to get a quote for the work. Pretty straight forward right?? However because my spouse was not home they insisted that we meet again and refused to provide a quote until that time. The initial meeting was essentially for nothing and a waste of everyone's time. I suggested we have a phone call to review the quote with my spouse but they said it leads to confusion and we should really do it in person. Furthermore, they refused to provide a quote unless we repeated the meeting at my house with us both present. It was clear to me that they are driven more by high pressure sales tactics and games, rather than customer service.
Description of Work: Value Dry evaluated my basement crawl space but did not provide a quote. They will not provide a quote unless both homeowners are present.

Response from Value Dry Waterproofing
Dear Angie's List Member, ValueDry appreciates your feedback. I understand that you may feel home improvement companies have taken advantage of you or others in the past. Unfortunately this does happen, however it is absolutely not a business practice of ValueDry. We require all homeowners to be present during our free inspection unless there are reasons that make that not possible such as deployment, geographical limitations, etc... We do this so we can educate all homeowners about our customized basement waterproofing solutions, answer any questions they may have about the different solutions, explain associated warranties, and yes outline the costs for the solutions collaboratively decided upon by all homeowners. In addition, since we are addressing foundation seepage and indoor air quality issues it is important all homeowners are aware of implications related to the waterproofing system we design together as well as the installation process and associated procedures. Yes, ValueDry seeks to EARN your business because we are a thorough and straight forward company. For ValueDry and the basement waterproofing industry it should be regarded as a respectable business practice that we meet with all homeowners for the inspection. We offer evening, Saturday, and even Sunday inspection times to make this fit the schedule of all homeowners whenever plausible. ValueDry does not require all homeowners to be present for unfair or unethical sales technique purposes. We do not persuade customers into purchasing products they don't need. We educate and design our solutions collaboratively with all homeowners precisely for that reason. Best of luck with your project, I'm sorry we were unable to meet your inspection scheduling needs. The representative from Value Dry showed up on time, looked at our crawlspace and sat down with my husband to talk about our options. What we expected to happen is that the rep would tell us his opinion of the work that needed to be done and then give us a quote and next steps to get the work done. What happened was the rep was very condescending to my husband, saying that he's been in lots of situations where if one spouse isn't home - it leads to a game of telephone and confusion and decisions don't get made. He insisted on following up to set up a meeting where both of us could be home so he could tell us his recommendation and quote us a price. After my husband insisted that it was ok, and that he wanted a quote, the rep refused. He was not specific about the work that needed to be done and would only say that it would cost "a lot of money, in the thousands." My husband had to take time off work to meet the rep for the estimate, so asking us to take time off again, at the same time in order to give us basic information is a bit outrageous. We still gave him the benefit of a doubt, but a few days have passed and we have heard nothing. In the meantime, we had another company come out, give us a thorough recommendation with several options and a quote with plenty of written materials on the recommendations and the benefits on the spot. Since we haven't heard back from Value Dry and because they refused to give us a quote without both of us being there, we're just going to go with the company who actually gave us an estimate.

Mrs. [Member Name Removed] and Mr. [Removed Member Name] , Thank you very much for your feedback related to the inspection of your apartment buildings crawl space. This feedback has been helpful to Value Dry in many ways. During our initial conversation your inspection was scheduled to be performed with just your husband present due to your time constraints. Because of this we certainly should have taken measurements and provided you with an estimate on the spot or via email shortly after visiting and inspecting the apartment buildings crawl space. There was a miscommunication on our end between the scheduling department and the inspector whom visited your home which resulted in you not receiving a timely estimate. It is Value Dry policy to require all homeowners and responsible parties to be present for our free residential inspections. Your case is not residential as your building is technically a business since you rent other apartments in addition to the one you live in. As with most large purchases and important decisions; there are several design options, some related to the health of inhabitants of the structure, some warranty related, and of course some financial and cost related that must be addressed during the crawl space encapsulation solution design process. We work in tandem with our customers in making these important decisions in order to provide them with the solution that solves their issue to their budgetary satisfaction. I personally apologize for any inconvenience this inspection and miscommunication may have caused you. We do feel that it is a best practice to design solutions for our customers with all responsible parties being present. I'm sorry we did not earn your business. We have a stellar reputation in a not so stellar industry. Keeping all of our customers informed and aware along the way is important to us. It is certainly not our practice to be condescending either. We offer evening, early morning, and weekend appointments in order to offer our customers flexibility in this inspection scheduling process. Best of luck with your crawl space issues. Your feedback has given us the opportunity to provide more upfront customer service in the future and I thank you for that. James Ketterer - President - Value Dry

The house is a ranch style with a large footprint and a fully finished basement. Water infiltration over the past two years had caused quite a bit of damage. The work included complete demolition of existing walls and installation of a french drain water proofing system with two sump pumps. The initial estimate was for the work to be completed in four and a half days. Being an older house with sturdy construction, I had my doubts that the work could be completed in the estimated time. I was pleasantly surprised. The crew completed most of the demolition in one day, and had started digging the french drain as they demolished wall sections. They installed plastic "dust wall" to contain the construction dust and dirt. It is never possible to contain all the fine dust from this extensive demolition and construction, but we were surprised at the small amount of dust that enter our upstairs living area. in all the demolition and construction went off without an issue. The work was excellent, and the instruction provided after the work was finished was very helpful. I have waited several months to write a review because we wanted to see if the system would perform as advertised. Again my skeptical views were dismissed. Several periods of extended rain did not stress the system, and the basement did not show any signs of any water infiltration. The installed vent fan has reduced the humidity level to the point where the dehumidified does not run constantly during wet times. In all the installation exceeded my strict expectations. A pleasant surprise from a very skilled and efficient work crew.

Bill Strong, V.P. of the company, gave a clear explanation with visuals of the causes and effects of basement water problems. On surveying our basement he proposed installing a subfloor pressure relief system for the full perimeter of our basement along with a sump pump (we already had one) and two battery backups. Although the quality of the work, e.g. the draintile flushing system and the EZ Breathe Ventilation unit, seemed to be of high quality, we selected another company because of its lower price.
Description of Work: Bill Strong provided an estimate for installing a subfloor pressure relief system, a second sump pump, two battery backups along with two EA Jet Kleen draintile flushing systems, a vapor barrier on the wall, and an EZ Breathe Ventilation unit.

It was kind of expensive, which we knew after they gave us the estimate. What I didn't know was they were going to put the floor up higher than it had been so that tall people now hit their heads. I didn't know that until a tall person came and hit their head. They did what they were supposed to do. They annually come and flush the system and that's fine. Value Dry came in and jackhammered up the whole floor. Took out the bottom few steps to the basement and then I had this lovely fresh concrete floor in my basement. All the interior walls and plumbing came out. They had to do redo the floor. There were things they didn't warn me about like the ceiling height. I think they're pricey. I don't know if you have a whole floor taken up and repoured, I don't know if you could get less pricey. The sales person that I met with who was technology very good disappeared. They insisted I call someone else after that. That person was not as good about getting back to me. There were some problems.

They were very good. I think they guarantee their work and maybe that’s why I got them. My one complaint about them really is that they had to drill a hole in my tile floor downstairs in the basement and they hadn’t told me about it so I was shocked but that’s the only way they could do it. There was no other way to do it but I would have liked to have waned. They could have improved with their price. Just for a warning for a structural improvement, when they did the hole on the floor.

The crew arrived on time. Closed off the work area from the rest of the basement so that no dust would get onto the other items. Worked quickly and professionally. Left no mess. Completed all to my satisfaction. Since then we have had some major rain and there is no longer any leakage. I did have to clear out a six foot area from the wall on my own...not a big deal.

Well after months of research and comparisons, I decided to call Value Dry for a free estimate. Although based on my research, I was pretty certain that I wanted them to do the job. Firstly, Carlos the estimator/inspector was very professional, knowledgeable, and patient. I appreciate that he did not pressure me to buy. His presentation to explain the problem was superb. He even presented me with a short video presentation and samples of the products that would be used to complete the work. The workers that performed the work did a great job too and took the time to make sure that the work area was left as clean as possible after each work day. I feel confident that the system will work.

The estimator was courteous. He surprised us at the beginning by saying that for every crawl space (even our relatively dry and small 782 SF, 70 year old one), they would install a sump pump or full perimeter drain (first red flag), and the drainage mat didn't seem to be optional. It was odd that he became quite defensive (second red flag) when we asked if there were any issues with their spray foam insulation system detaching from concrete walls (that he told us takes groundwater in). He explained the spray foam insulation had been used in concrete block wall installations for 5-6 years, and that because it's a "non-issue" there is no warranty that covers it. We found it unusual that he wanted to create the quotes at our home which put us behind on our schedule. I'm sure their system creates a beautiful crawl space or encapsulated basement system, but it was complete overkill for our application.
Description of Work: Gave us a quote more than twice as expensive as the most expensive of the other 11 we'd received

Response from Value Dry Waterproofing
To Whom it May Concern: Thank you very much for your feedback. ValueDry always recommend full perimeter drainage, a sump pump, a battery back up sump pump, drainage matting, reinforced vapor barrier for the floor, insulation / vapor barrier for the walls, and the installation of a ventilation device for crawl space encapsulation. Crawl space encapsulation is a process that requires many moving parts. Subterranean foundation walls can leak so it is imperative that we recommend the drainage and sump pumps. Dirt floors and walls condensate and become wet so we recommend drainage matting, vapor barrier, and insulation. Crawl space air can become stagnant and damp so we recommend ventilation / dehumidification devices. All of this being said you don't have to purchase any or all of these things but it is our job to recommend the industry standard for crawl space encapsulation.. We do now require the purchase of the drainage matting under the reinforced crawl space vapor barrier which we install. Of recent we have found that the benefits of the drainage matting in protecting the vapor barrier from damage due to movement around the crawl space and the condensation reducing effects make it a necessity when installing the vapor barrier on the floor. Also, It is not an expensive item in the grand scheme of creating an encapsulated crawl space. As for the inspector getting defensive I can only apologize for that and try to make our inspectors better due to your feedback. Again, thank you for your feedback. We have NEVER had an instance of spray foam separating from a concrete block wall. The inspector was mis informed regarding the warranty on that item. Our spray foam is certainly covered under warranty from separating from the block wall. Also, the spray foam that we use is rated as a Vapor Barrior directing any wall seepage down under the drainage matting to the drainage pipe and sump pump if selected and installed. It is interesting that you find it unusual that we would create a quote while at your home. We have to work along with you to design the solution that you are comfortable with. Once we have done that we can provide you with an executable agreement that you can sign so you can provide us with a deposit and we can schedule the work to be installed. It is our policy to inform you during the scheduling of your inspection that the appointment would probably take 90-120 minutes. To perform a professional inspection, design a solution with your needs, wants and budget in mind takes time and collaboration. I apologize if this wasn't communicated properly during the inspections scheduling process I will inquire and work to improve that communication. Our intention is to earn our customers business in a professional manner during our inspections. It seems as though you are probably very informed having had 11 estimates on your crawl space. We find most of our customers are interested in solving their problem and having the work done by a company that is reputable and experienced in our business. We have found that If compared in an apples to apples fashion (warranty, service, and reputation considered) in our industry and geographical marketplace, ValueDry crawl space encapsulation pricing is very competitive. We know this through ongoing customer feedback and industry research. Hope you can make an educated decision soon related to your crawl space. Best of luck with your project and thank you again for your feedback. James Ketterer - President

Bill arrived right on time at 7 pm (another bonus for this company = EVENING HOURS!!!). He listened to us describe the problem and the other proposed solutions. (We were upfront that we were seeking an additional quote because of the very different ideas we had gotten to date.) Bill spent a lot of time with us and ultimately told us that if we were satisfied with our existing system, we should use them. (The reason I hadn't just used them is I wasn't sure their idea of bringing the water into my internal system would work and also I wanted to avoid ripping up the floor.) Bill said that that was the best solution, and if we stuck with the same provider, there would be no "blame game" if something happened after the new drains were installed. I really felt like Bill gave us a straight answer and while he admitted he might have done some things differently in our system, he thought overall it was a decent product and that our best bet was sticking with the original provider. I was impressed by his honesty and professionalism, because I was ready to hire him (I am not that crazy about the original provider, although they have been more than OK since an initial rough patch, but I'm always looking for options.) Bottom line -- call Value Dry first -- get Bill Strong if you can. he knows what he is doing and is honest and has your best interest at heart, not just making a sale.
Description of Work: We have a complex water issue with an existing inside system from another provider with four (yes, four) 1/2 HP pumps. (Arlington swamp, bottom of hill, neighbor with paved driveway.) We have not had an inside flood for years. recently, however, during the torrential rains, water would rush through the outside basement stairwell wall, so we realized there was more water we needed to deal with. I called Value Dry for an estimate after getting wildly different ideas from three other companies (one of which installed the inside system). Value Dry staff returned my call promptly, took down information, and made an initial appointment. Upon review of my issue, they rescheduled me with their most experienced guy BILL STRONG -- if you can get him you should. I am an amateur sump pump and water problem expert (I've had to become that!) and I can tell you Bill really knows his stuff.

I had my crawl space encapsulated by another company, not Value Dry. Unfortunately, this company does not install crawl space doors. I contacted Value Dry and clearly explained I was in need of crawl space doors only. They scheduled to have an associate come out to provide an estimate for installing doors only. The associate that came to my home was very direct about the fact (which I appreciate) that Value Dry requires a minimum cost to do any work of $2,700. Keep in mind, I paid that much to have the entire crawl space encapsulated. Value Dry was aware that $2,700 is too much for simply installing doors, but refused to tell this to me over the phone when I explained the scope of work. Instead they chose to waste my time and the time of their associate to tell me the job is too small. Very disappointed.
Description of Work: Provided an estimate for work.

[Member name removed], Thank you for the feedback regarding your free inspection. I apologize for having wasted your time regarding your crawl-space door project. It is my understanding that you originally contacted us on Monday June 1 in order to schedule a free inspection to replace your crawl-space doors. We scheduled a 7PM appointment with you for Wednesday June 3rd (less than 72hrs from your original call) to look at the project. I followed up with your inspector, Carlos Hernando, first thing this morning after seeing your review in order to make sure we are providing the best customer service possible and in order to see if we can improve our customer service in any way. Carlos explained that he arrived at your home on-time on Wednesday at 7PM as scheduled. ValueDry, like most home improvement companies, has job minimums associated with different types of work. Carlos explained to me that he shared with you that we would charge you $700 per crawl space door totaling $1,400 for the project of removing your existing crawl space doors, replacing the framing with pressure treated wood, and installing our PVC sealed crawl space door. I understand that you felt that this was too expensive and that you felt you could pay someone to go to a hardware store and build you new doors for around $500. This type of a solution can certainly be done but it is not comparable to our sealed crawl space door solution which you were quoted. We use pressure treated framing and PVC products when building our crawl-space doors so they are mold and rot resistant. This is important when creating an encapsulated crawl space and a sealed access door. I'm surprised that the other vendor which you worked with would not install new doors for you. A crawl-space is not encapsulated until properly sealed doors are installed. All homes are different. When installing crawl space doors sometimes we have to install larger access wells as the crawl space doors are below grade. Other times we widen the opening of the crawl space door itself and install steel lintels to make the crawl space more accessible. It is difficult for us to know until we physically see the project to provide an estimate. It is true that sometimes projects are too small for our minimums and our customers decide to have a handyman or someone else perform the work. We don't charge for our inspection. I do believe that we still perform a valuable service to these customers by educating them and helping them understand how to approach the project. I do understand your feeling that we wasted your time and we appreciate your feedback. Good luck with your crawl space door replacement project. Feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss our customer service in more detail as I'm always looking to improve our customer experience. Regards, James Ketterer - President ValueDry Maryland,DC, Virginia, Kent and Sussex counties Delaware.

They were a highly rated company that I got through Angie's List. II contacted them at their suggustion and the woman that did was extremely rude. I wanted to speak with someone that actually performed the services because I was not getting the answers I needed. She would not let me speak with anyone else and was very abrupt and rude. It all started out with the estimate that was supposed to be free and then she gave me a price of $350.00 for them to come out. I was very unsettled with the experience and do not understand why such a highly rated company would have such a rude person contact me back.
Description of Work: I called for an estimate.

Ms. [member name removed], My name is Lewis Kim, I am the scheduling manager here at Value Dry. I'd like to take a moment and apologize for any rudeness or unprofessionalism that was exhibited by the scheduler you had spoken with over the phone. We are thankful for your customer experience feedback because this helps us ensure that everyone at Value Dry is polite, professional, and correctly representing the company. I have already taken the time to speak with the staff member with whom you spoke. I have also taken the necessary steps to address and correct the issues you outlined via Angie's List. It is often difficult for our scheduling department to answer specific basement waterproofing questions over the phone. However, we should never leave prospective customers feeling the way you did after your call. It is rare that the in-home inspector runs across a situation where he can't answer a question while at your home performing an inspection. If the person you spoke with was not able to satisfactorily answer your questions related to the services which we offer or scheduling an in-home inspection, that person should have put you on hold or taken your information so someone more versed could speak with you or contact you back. I also wanted to clarify for you that while our inspections are valued at $350, we provide free inspections for current homeowners. If the person with whom you spoke with told you differently, that was incorrect and we sincerely apologize. In cases where we are meeting with non-homeowners, such as prospective buyers of a home, we do charge a $350 for our inspection and design process. Again, Value Dry does not charge for an inspection provided we are meeting with the current owners of the property. Any additional feedback is certainly welcome. We would still like to perform an inspection at your home if desired. Please feel free to contact me to discuss this experience further or in order to discuss your situation by calling me at (888) 768-2583. Please ask to speak directly with me, Lewis Kim, as I'm always interested in gaining more insight as to how we can improve our customer experience. Regards, Lewis Kim Value Dry Customer Service

Our basement is a city row house that has knee wall around the interior foundation, so this was not your average basement french drain installation. The company worked with us to make sure the job was done correctly. They came out as many times as needed to get it right. If you are spending your money on getting your basement water proofed, you need to use this company. You will not be disappointed!
