Value Dry contacted me within minutes after purchasing the inspection from Angie's list and we set up a time for the inspector to come out. They were very flexible with their appointment times. The gentleman was on time. We showed him where the water was coming in and he asked several questions. He explained to us their service of digging a trench in the basement where the water was coming in and a system to catch that water and channel it to the sump pump. After researching this method I think it is called a French Drain. He explained the materials they used versus other companies and how they guarantee their work for life. The explanation made a lot of sense. Depending on what areas of the basement were done (a small section versus the entire parameter of the basement which is very large) he estimated it would cost $5,000-$25,000 but that they offered specials depending on the time of year when business is slow or if they are already doing a job in the area. We explained that we were already under contract for another big project so spending that much money at the moment was not an option therefore, we never got into what the current specials were. He was not pushy and agreed that there were small things we could do in the meantime to stop the entrance of water however, this was not a solution to the problem. We would call them again to get another estimate and current specials if and when we are ready to move forward with that project.
Description of Work: I purchased the basement water proofing inspection because we had several places in our basement where water would seep in and we didn't know why.

First, they insist that both homeowners be physically present for the "inspection." (Which was not an inspection at all, but more on that later.) My husband took time off, and when I offered to join the meeting by phone they would not schedule the "inspection" until I absolutely agreed to be present in person. Otherwise, they would be forced to charge us several hundred dollars for the "inspection." So, we started with me taking time off from work and rearranging my schedule to accommodate them. I have never, in all of my times of having work done on various properties, had a contractor that was so inflexible with this requirement. In my opinion, who meets the "inspector" and how we decide to proceed on work on our property is a matter between my husband and myself, and a company has no business dictating how we as partners handle that. That should have been the first red flag. Then, the "inspection" turned out to be a little lesson on crawl space encapsulation (vs a ventilated crawl space), and a very hard sell. We barely got the guy to poke his head into our crawl space to take a look, and that after the hour of the hard sell. Then it made sense; they called it a crawl space renovation and attached a rather high price tag to it. I can see how both homeowners would need to be present to sign off on 3-4x more than they were expecting. It's a sales pitch all the way. When I tried to suggest that we keep the crawl space as "ventilated" and just replace insulation and provide a vapor barrier, we had an argument that that was really a stupid idea and it became clear that they really only had one expensive solution. The salesman said that they could replace the insulation between the joists and provide a vapor barrier (essentially leaving it as a vented crawl space) if we really wanted to go ahead with that inferior solution, but the quote he provided listed the work as basically an encapsulation where the homeowners would go back in and add insulation in between the floor joists. If it was truly an encapsulation, there would be no need for us to add insulation. I couldn't make heads or tails of it, and it made me think they only do encapsulations of crawl spaces and cannot offer an alternative solutions. The irony is that after that experience I started reading about crawl space encapsulation. While I do not agree with the salesman's opinion that this is the only workable solution, it does seem like a good solution in many cases. But the audacity to require both homeowners to be physically present, calling what was clearly a sales situation an "inspection" that we would be required to pay for if one of us didn't make it in person (!!!), and the high pressure to sign off on a high price tag turned me off to this company and their business practices. I would caution others to stay away.
Description of Work: We have insulation in between the floor joists in our ventilated crawlspace that is falling down. We were looking for someone to replace insulation and provide a vapor barrier.

Mrs [Member Name Removed], Thank you for your feedback. Per our notes our original appointment was set with your husband on November 9th for Nov 21st so both you and your husband could be present. Value Dry requires that all homeowners are present for our free inspections for several important reasons. We educate homeowners on the reasons for needing our services, educate them on the products we need to utilize to solve the issues they called us about, and to design a solution keeping their goals and budgets in mind. If all owners are not present we can not perform a thorough inspection and design process accomplishing all of those goals. In order to accommodate our potential customers schedules we perform inspections in the evenings and weekends. We always convey this requirement during the initial call our prospective customers. Your husband initially conveyed to us that you are both concerned with the moisture and water in your crawl space and that you are noticing this moisture upstairs in your home. The reason that the insulation is falling down is because your crawl space is experiencing high levels of humidity due to being an open or vented crawl space; and the resulting condensation is weighing the insulation down so it falls to the ground of the crawl space. Simply replacing the insulation and laying a vapor barrier on the floor will not address the cause of the problem and you will be spending money to replace the insulation for it to just fall down again which is of course not ideal. Once you did some research it sounds as if you understand that fully encapsulating your crawl space is your best option. Half measures with crawl space encapsulation waste money, can speed up structural deterioration, and are unhealthy for the homeowners living above the crawl space. Simply replacing the insulation and vapor barrier is just that, a half measure. Value Dry is not in the business of half solving problems. Sometimes we take partial steps to move customers toward the ideal solution due to budgetary constraints and the like. All of this is part of the discover and design process that we go through during our inspection and reinforces the need for all vested parties to be present. Desires, plans for the home, budgets, ... are things that we need to know and they are often conveyed by one owner or the other. I do apologize that you feel it was unnecessary for you to be present for the inspection, education, and design process for your crawl space. It does sound as though you are involved with the decision and for this reason we wanted you to be present for the inspection. Due to your discontent with the first inspection we did send back our most senior inspector to your home to re-inspect under the impression that you and your husband would be home, but upon arrival you were not there (although we were told you would be) and also your husband also had to leave quickly. Our intention is certainly to earn your business but we can not do that if you are not present for the inspection. Best of luck with your project. I hope you choose to encapsulate your crawl space properly for the health of your home and your family. President - Jim Ketterer

Complete scam of a company, use these guys under absolutely no circumstances!!! We had this character Les come out and inspect our basement as we had some water coming up through our carpet a few weeks back. Before he even looked at the issue he spent 15 minutes in our upstairs foyer trying to sell the fact that our area had a serious problem with the rising water table and we were subject to a hydrostatic pressure problem that was causing a water intrusion into our basement and that his company had the solution. He then went on to say that we had major mold issues and that our house was unsafe for us and our kids to live in. As you can imagine, we were pretty much terrified after hearing this. The first quote that Les gave us to completely "gut" our basement, re-mediate the mold, and install their system was $54,000. After I stopped laughing he "removed a few of the bells and whistles" and it was down to $24,000. Of course we would never commit to something like that without getting other opinions, and am I ever glad we did. After having two other competitors out along with a highly reviewed mold company, we realized the following: the cause of our water was actually a leaking HVAC unit and we had ZERO mold in our house. The entire sales pitch from this fool was predetermined before he even inspected our house. To give you an idea for what type of character this guy is, he started by saying he went to Cornell with the owner Jim (later that turned into MIT and even later Harvard). I guess he couldn't keep his story straight and my wife and I have been laughing about this ever since. Additionally, the guy used the "s" and "f" words at least 50x while at my home, including in front of my 5 and 3 year old kids. Very classy. This guy is a step down from a bad used car salesman and it is amazing that they allow him to visit customers. I wouldn't touch this company with a 20 foot pole. Scam city.

It was fine. They just took two seconds to check it out. Their main goal is to asses the current situation on my house to see if there is something else that they could suggest or recommend, but they did actually test it to make sure that everything was working properly. One person came to complete the service. It spent like literally just a few seconds checking it to make sure that it works, but then he was willing to spend another 10 to 15 minutes talking about potential options to do different things with my crawl space in terms of what else they offered. It was obviously part of the pitch, but he was still helpful in thinking through what might make sense. He left the area clean. They did what I expected them to do and then followed up with potential next steps.

All work was done promptly, in a timely manner, and the team worked to minimize the disruption to our daily routine. There was a mistake made in one small area that I found at night; fortunately, I found it before we put carpet down, and the supervisor with whom I'd been working came out the next morning to get it fixed. Since then, I haven't observed any problems. (I should note that due to the nature of the work and the fact that there's now carpet, I might not notice if water's seeping in, but I think I'd smell the mold/mildew in that event, and I haven't noticed anything not attributable to other sources.)

It went well for the most part. However, the workmen were delayed in getting here and worked late into the night to complete the project--like 11pm late. One of the drainage boxes was not installed correctly, but another workman came and, after thinking "outside the box" (his humor), was able to correct the problem. Unable to insert price, which was approx. $7000.

Ms. [Member Name Removed], Thank you for your feedback regarding our work at your home. I apologize for our crew having been at your home so late while completing your installation. Unfortunately, circumstances and delays arise in our precipitation related business and we have to work later than we would like in order to maintain schedules and satisfy customers. I don't know what specifically happened in your instance causing our delay since it was in 2013 but I assure you it was not our intention to be at your home so late. I also appreciate your understanding when our VP of Operations, Danny Farnsworth, came to your home to correct the drainage box issue. From our notes Danny had to engineer the basin to work in your specific instance which he did successfully. The initial crew should have consulted Danny with the issue during the installation. When customers call us with installation issues that need to be corrected or adjusted we pride ourselves on working promptly to correct the issue. Please contact us should you have any other issues with our warrantied services so we can work to provide great customer service and continue to do the right thing by our customers. We chose Value Dry to wrap the unfinished portion of our basement, address a leak where our water line entered the house, and repair our sump pump. A colleague recommended them to us, and we liked their proposal the best among those we obtained. They did a nice job overall, stayed on schedule, and cleaned things up after they were done. We used another company instead of Value Dry.
Description of Work: Our basement had a leaking from the wall. Rain water came out from the cracks. We called a few companies to inspect the leak. Value dry was one of them. The company responded very quickly, and sent a representative to our home even it was on a Saturday. This was good. However, the sale pitch of the representative was very obvious from the very beginning. Instead of going to look at the leak right away, he sat down with both I and my husband and asked the top reasons we wanted to fix the leak. He proposed a grand plan to install new pump system which one side of our basement would need to be dug up for the installation. We feel the proposal focused on how much the company wants to make but a real solution for our small leak problem. I would not recommend this company. We used another company who is more honest. They fixed our problem with 1/5 of the proposed cost by Value Dry.

Thank you for providing feedback related to your inspection. My name is James Ketterer and I am the President of ValueDry. I reviewed the inspection notes and spoke with the inspector who visited your home regarding your situation and your outlined concerns. Our notes indicate that you had a foundation leak surrounding a pipe that is coming through your foundation into your basement. You have also noted that there are some cracks that leak rain water. ValueDry is a reputable basement waterproofing company that provides lifetime transferable warranties on our solutions. After review, I agree with the solution that the inspector recommended for your situation. Often companies will recommend what I call "bubble gum fixes" such as caulking, sealants, epoxy, and other solutions of this nature that are not warrantable for extended periods of time due to their vulnerablility. It is ValueDry policy not to recommend such solutions. We have found that these solutions do not relieve the anxiety most of our customers are looking to subside. We have also found that when these solutions fail, the complaints that arise from those unhappy customers outweigh the complaints similar to that which you have shared. "Bubble gum" fixes are cheaper yes, but if your small leak turns into a big leak that causes damage to personal belongings or basement finishings when that "cheaper" fix fails due to a prolonged period of precipitation, foundation movement due to a minor tremor, deep freeze, or an expanding and contracting pipe, I think you will agree our warrantable solution may not look so extreme or expensive. We are far from a dishonest company and I'm confident that our reputation speaks for itself. We train our inspectors and installers to be straight forward and upfront with what we do, how much it costs, and what the associated warranties associated with the work we perform are. We work with our customers to learn their plans for their home and design solutions with them to solve their existing problems, safeguard against future problems, and take into consideration plans that they may have for their basements and their homes. We pride ourselves on performing quality work for our customers as well. If there is a problem with our installations we also take pride in promptly correcting them, making them right and training our employees how to avoid them in the future. Best of luck with the solution that you chose for your problem. I'm sorry that you feel we were trying to take advantage of you. Best - James Ketterer - President - ValueDry

Really well. Turns out I had some very big problems that a previous inspector missed. They did an extremely comprehensive inspection and then gave me a range of options to consider for near or long term address. I hired them to do all the subsequent work and, again, they did a fantastic job. The owner of the company personally called me when it was done to see how it went and then sent someone around again to do a few more touch ups and inspection. Great company, quality work. I trusted them.

Obie, the inspector who came out to our house, was exceptionally professional and gave us his honest assessment of our situation, which we greatly appreciated. He confirmed that there was in fact mold growing at the damp spots in our basement and that the moisture was likely coming through the cracks outside and through the brick and cement basement walls. He offered his own company's services, but said that what he would propose as a first step would be be possible and much less costly if we did it as a DIY. He recommended that we find a contractor's grade crack sealant and attempt to seal it ourselves. This fix may last a few years or may be enough to solve the problem entirely, but the problem didn't warrant a full scale digging of a new drainage system. He also gave us some tips on how to apply the sealant and route water away from the problem areas. We greatly appreciate his honest assessment and if in a few years we find we have moisture down there again, we will definitely call Value Dry for their services.
Description of Work: We have moisture (and mold, we were afraid) that develops in specific spots in our unfinished basement which we thought might be related to cracks in the alleyway along the exterior of our rowhouse.
