Long Fence

Description of Work: Hired Long Fence to remove old 2nd story deck and replace with new 2nd story deck . The company showed on the date and time expected so that was a plus. Problems began when removing the old deck. Instead of taking the deck apart, Long Fence dropped the entire deck which dug very large holes in the back yard (the company did not fix the damage). The new deck was installed and within a month, the gate would no longer go into the latch unless we pulled up on the gate. There were loose boards and a piece of quarter round had been placed between two boards to fill in space. The spokes surrounding the deck could be removed by hand (not good for children or pets). We contacted the company who eventually sent a supervisor who "fixed" the gate and nailed down the loose boards, but again the gate began to sag and the overall appearance was definitely not up to expectations. The deck also seemed to bounce when we walked across it. When we didn't get support from Long Fence, we called the building inspector. Here is where it gets very interesting. The building inspector had failed the construction. Long Fence had ignored the posting and continued the construction! The ENTIRE deck had to be removed and reconstructed. Long Fence sent a different contractor for the second installation. They had to add a support beam to prevent the deck from falling away from the house. This team told us if we had gotten 15-20 people on the deck it could have fallen (that made me feel good). The second deck was built better than the first, but the quality of wood used was poor. All of the top rails bow during the summer heat, there are a large number of knots coming out of the boards and nails pushing up from the floor boards. Not the appearance I was expecting. Before hiring Long Fence, one of my questions was "do you subcontract the work"? The salesman's response was we use our own people - not true! There were 2 separate sets of contractors. The first group left cigarette butts through the yard, did not repair the damage to the yard when they dropped the deck. The second group was more satisfactory. I will never hire this company for anything.
