the Village Carpenter is Family owned and operated business started by my Grandfather when he retired from the steel mill in 1961. I started "in tow" with my Grandfather and Great Grandfather instilling old school craftsmanship and hard core work ethic into a profession they noted, "will always be good for the Family." When Clients call the Village Carpenter, they get me, Mark Letersky from start to finish on every project, as well as an immediate history of a way of doing business on a level where everyone is your Neighbor and they appreciate quality work at a fair price.
We like and appreciate our Clients, so if you are just looking for cheap, inexperienced and unskilled labor, we ARE NOT who you are looking for your projects. We do honest work for reasonable compensation. Whether you need all of those little tasks on the "Honey Do" list done and over with, or an extension built on your home, the Village Carpenter offers a reasonably priced solution, great communication (cell, text, email) and all within a reasonable time frame. As always, Have a great day! Mark

Great job, good price, nice to work with. When someone goes up on a ladder to the upper roof to reattach a gutter, and goes into the attic to install a fan, you're never sure exactly what was done. However, I did later have to go up on a ladder to replace a gutter guard, and found that he had done an excellent job, with extra attention to detail. The attic fan he put in is extra powerful, and you can hear it faintly through the bathroom ceiling fan opening, so I know it is working well. Would definitely use again.

This gentleman was cavalier in his response to my original email request and then I never heard from him again. It's unfortunate, we had a long list of items to be worked on around the house. His estimate was way better than any other company that I had tried. He also came within the estimate. There was a little unexpected cost out of the outer trim on the windows that needed to be replaced. He prepared me for the possibility beforehand. I like everything about them. He's a really nice guy, did beautiful work and great price. He got along great with anybody.

Response from The Village Carpenter
The [Member name removed] family is the type of client that makes me want to always be able to provide the services our company has based our traditional craftsmanship and affordable reputation on. I was under the impression that this Client had requested estimates from several contractors before making an informed decision. Removing all of the windows from a home and replacing them with a Client pre-purchased product can be a difficult process. While a Carpenter has to be able to go from room to room and expose a residence to the elements during demo and replacement of every window of a residence, it also disrupts the day to day living of a family. We were able to strike a comfortable balance between naptime and work hours. More importantly, when an issue arose that wasn't originally part and parcel of the main contract, we were able to amicably agree on a mutually satisfying resolution. In addition, once the window work as been completed, this very same Client ran into masonry issues. Their entire chimney structure was in jeopardy, beyond simple pointing up, and the entire chimney needed to be rebuilt. Once again, [Member name removed]sought a few estimates before considering us for the project. We were able to complete a typically invasive and dirty project, and complete it beyond mere satisfaction. The Client and his family enjoy their home, while technically in the city, nestled on a cul-de-sac with a green way to their side. They have every advantage of city living without the “traffic" and the “issues” of the city upon their home. It was both an honor and pleasure to be considered for their projects, let alone to be hired twofold for relatively major projects for the Client. I trust we will be considered for any future projects with their residence if the occasion arises.
Giving a farmhouse estate circa 1842 a fresh renovationrequired a combination of old school workmanship and craftsmanship. The family owned and operated four generation Master Carpenter and crew the Village Carpenter was the absolute best choice possible for this project. The main farmhouse required tender loving care as 160 years of aging were skillfully and gradually tuned to perfection. All of the necessary woodworking repairs were completed by Master Carpenter Mark Letersky of the Village Carpenter and the patching and painting were artfully completed by Pintail Painting. The end product was nothing shy of magnificent. Their strong work ethic and expertise, combined with many years of masterful woodworking experience made this project a huge success. This project had been postponed year after year to properly budget and select the right crew to complete this project. The working cooperation of a Master Carpenter from the Village Carpenter and outstanding painters from Pintail Painting completed this project through every square-foot of the estate. The pictures do not do justice to the quality woodworking, craftsmanship and workmanship that went into this project. Not only is the Village Carpenter highly recommended, they are a versatile Contractor to handle exterior, interior, covered areas, and any other project worthy of taking the time and effort for careful renovation and repairs. Although this project represented every extreme, the professionals from the Village Carpenter stuck to their estimate, stayed on budget, and consistently maintained a level of communication worthy of their reputation. Of great concern for this project was the EPA certification and job site safety standards maintained for all of the lead based restoration. Working areas were draped, tarped, and vacuumed clean daily even on the roof surfaces, gutters, ground surface, and all of the leaded debris was accounted for and properly hauled away in compliance with the EPA guidelines and restrictions. We could not of hope for a more professional, cost-efficient, and more personable company for all of our restoration projects. They completed the extreme gable woodworking and rooftop pinnacle repairs, all sides to the farmhouse on the estate, porch columns and railings, covered porch surfaces, deck work, shutters, the entire barn and timber work and our 160-year-old woodworking needs were handled with extreme care and masterful preservation by the Village Carpenter. On a side note, windows were replaced, interior trim and cabinetry was completed, and at the end of every day, the job site was clean and prepared for the next day of the project. There simply is no other choice for a consumer wanting a quality, old-school strong work ethic and masterful skill level carpentry, masonry, electrical and plumbing completed per your request, at your direction, and at a cost qualifying every dollar spent. We will undoubtedly be using this fine company again and again and cannot offer any higher recommendation for their services. Interestingly enough, they shared that they will consider any size project. They will do small projects, or even tackle the exterior and interior of a 6000 ft.² farmhouse estate like this 1842 landmark. You'll find no better. Many thanks again to Master Carpenter Mark Letersky, his Family and crew.
Description of Work: Don't be fooled by the name of this Company, the Village Carpenter, when in fact the Owner Mark Letersky is not on;y a Master Carpenter, he does every phase of construction, renovation and repairs! We relied on the Village Carpenter for our renovations, woodworking, windows, doors, trim AND electrical, masonry and plumbing as well. They even tackled landscaping concerns, barn framing and doors, as well as masonry repairs that date back to the Civil War era construction. Moreover, it truly is a Family run business. Mark Letersky is a Master Carpenter, handyman extraordinaire, experienced mason, electrician and plumber. His Wife handles the business Administration and you will undoubtedly meet his children on a job site. This is the type of company that will install a mailbox or fix a window one day, and begin renovation on a turn of century Victorian the next day, put an addition on a 5 year old home the next week and explain to you how to complete a simple project yourself! Most importantly, they offer a fair estimate and stay within the original range, Any Change of Work Orders that we requested were treated as separate jobs and were detailed and fully explained throughout the process.

The price quote was right on target but they wanted 1/3 to book the work, 1/3 on the first day of the job and the rest at the completion - and he quoted a range of price, and asked for the payment based on the highest amount, rounded up. And, he had almost no materials to buy for the job - I bought almost every thing.

In response to this “review,” we suggest you consider the source. We responded to this review to warn other providers and Contractors of this atypical Angie's List Member. First and foremost, this Angie's List Member has offered three reviews: One “D” and two “F’s.” The two “F” reviews were actually wise enough not to respond to her at all. If they had, they may have not been as polite and even offered an estimate. Secondly, we offered to accommodate her schedule “when in town” and looked at her project on a weekend, two weeks waiting for her to be available and within certain time restraints. I then spent well over an hour wading through a hoarder’s lair and she painstakingly described the work she wanted done in that very unhealthy environment. Keep in mind, all of the “materials” were basically going to be provided by her personally, which basically included a sorted mess of close out and bargain priced products already dated and of poor quality. She explained she inherited property in Connecticut and was going to do "minimal repairs" to sell her home. Lastly, we offered a detailed estimate for the projects and requested the recommended deposit of 1/3 suggested by the MHIC, which also happens to be the standard in the industry. She called and was offended by the practice. Quite frankly, this made me question whether or not she could even afford the work to be done and suggested she would “stiff” us for the remainder once completed. We have done business long enough to understand human nature and trustworthy people. We deal fairly with our Clients and expect the same mutual respect in return. Other Contractors should beware of this Angie's List Member as atypical and not one to voluntarily provide services or sign a contract. Curiously enough, you will note she offered no other reviews, either positive or negative. After being rebuffed by her two “F” reviews, apparently our “D” rated estimate alerted her to the reality that if she were to utilize Angie’s List as a resource, she would have to respect common practices in the industry and actually have to offer payment for work to be completed professionally. The benefit and privilege of doing work for Angie's List Members is that they have invested the research time and subscription monies into a network of responsible and educated consumers simply in search of what should naturally occur, quality work in exchange for a fair price. Mutual respect between a home owner and a contractor is not an unrealistic premise for a business relationship, it usually is the "norm." This Angie's List Member (likely temporary) is not a long standing member of our community, nor not anyone most of us would consider a good neighbor. Once again, please consider the source.

Description of Work: Spoke very positively about renovating older houses in the Hereford zone - we have an older house in that zone. Occasionally, simple communications go awry between a Husband and a Wife. This poor review was apparently “ghost written” by a Husband under his Wife’s name and account without her knowledge. When I contacted the Angie’s List Member directly about this review and the scheduling miscommunications, she apologized profusely and stated she would immediately pull the review from Angie’s List, because her Husband had gone on line under her name and membership and written the review without even consulting her about it. Unfortunately, this review was never pulled as promised by the Angie’s List Member, thereby necessitating this explanation. We were contacted in December about simple bathroom renovations very near to us and the potential Client let us know they were in no hurry and they were in the “planning to decide” stage. Lo and behold on the day of the proposed meeting it snowed. Not unusual in December, especially not in the Hereford Zone. We rescheduled, and it happened again. For many of us, when it snows and the local school close over safety concerns and under age children stay home unexpectedly. Work schedules are interrupted and accommodations are made. This potential Client was reasonably understanding of the circumstances beyond anyone’s control and our FREE ESTIMATE was not timely rescheduled amidst all of the snow day delays. As an aside, two full days of estimates and work were lost for these snows days, not simply their estimate. When this negative review appeared, I immediately contacted the Angie’s List Member. She had no idea what I was talking about and I read her the review and she was notably upset when she realized her Husband wrote the review under her name and she stated that she would immediately remove the review. Rather than calling again and stirring trouble in their household, I thought it best to simply detail this breakdown in communication leading to the poor review. Our Family lives and works in the Hereford Zone and we consider ourselves good neighbors. We participate in community activities, attend church, coordinate school events, donate to local charities and take the opinions of our Clients expressed on Angie’s List very seriously. Not to any surprise, we provide free estimates in the hope of earning the contract and that helps support our Family. The benefit and privilege of doing work for Angie's List Members is that they have invested the research time and subscription monies into a network of responsible and educated consumers simply in search of what should naturally occur, quality work in exchange for a fair price. Mutual respect between a home owner and a contractor is not an unrealistic premise for a business relationship, it usually is the "norm." This unfortunate combination of poor weather and poor communication predicated this poor review, which is unfortunate because as neighbors, I thought the matter had been resolved and review was to be pulled down once the matter was discussed informally.

One of the many benefits and privileges of doing work for the great variety of Angie's List Members is that they have invested their valuable research time and subscription monies into a network of responsible and educated consumers who are all simply in search of what should naturally occur, quality work in exchange for a fair price. Mutual respect between a home owner and a contractor is not an unrealistic premise for a business relationship, it usually is the "norm" and should remain the community standard. We also appreciate and respect this very type of Angie’s List Member. Ned Wilson is the very type of Client we prefer having had the privilege of providing services, as he and his Wife are very personable, intelligent and they always seem to appreciate our work. Our Family lives and works in the Hereford Zone and we consider ourselves good neighbors. We participate in community activities, attend church, coordinate school events, donate to local charities and take the opinions of our Clients expressed on Angie’s List very seriously. When the water source in the horse barn was failing to yield any water, we were concerned. Of course, we called Mark. He responded rapidly and diagnosed the problem accurately. Our outdoor hydrant was failing and needed to be replaced. Mark hand-dug through a concrete slab (oh yes he did!) in order to remain sensitive to the surrounding barn structure. He located the base of the hydrant line, removed the hydrant, and replaced it with a new model that he custom sized for my wife's height. He encased the hydrant pipe such that it could be removed easily in the future if need be; and he perfectly poured replacement concrete to complete the job. Amazing! Mark did a remarkable job with a project that required considerable care and attention. Following the construction of a garage addition, we brought in Mark to execute the final grading work. He did so flawlessly - and with a machine that did not harm the surrounding yard. He seeded and strawed and left us with clear watering instructions. Next, he installed geopavers for a mower exit ramp, and further seeded and strawed. He incorporated drainage into the project, and he improved the gutter sytem on the garage. Once again, Mark came through with top quality work. Another job well done!

I bought my wife an outdoor water station for her garden. It's positioned at the far end of our deck and requires a water source. We have a hose bib on the deck's opposite side. I contacted Mark to talk with him about options for running the water line into the garden station in a manner that wasn't aesthetically compromising. He constructed a solution and married it with an additional plan to add a portion of wooden decking to an area of the deck that was otherwise unused and unsightly. Mark killed two birds with one stone and I couldn't be happier with the result. Again, Mark Letersky set himself apart from his competitors with his creative solutions and strength of character. After going to 2 "big box" stores and one lumber company about this work and being told that the doors would be special order and take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive, I found The Village Carpenter on Angie's List. Mark got back to me right away. He put me in touch with a lumber supplier who was able to get the right doors in two days. Mark picked the doors and hardware up at the lumber company. He arrived at the time he said, did all the alterations from the back of his truck, since the site was a condo and had no space for the tools needed. He then installed the doors, and they fit perfectly. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing carpentry and/or handyman services. My only regret is that I no longer live in Maryland and won't be able to use his services here in Florida.
Description of Work: Modified two standard double doors to fit an exixting non-standard opening.
He quoted $2300 for the job and others quoted $1000. I think he was charging for the traveling and bunch of other things. He lives 10 miles of North where I live, so it was not possible for him too. He was a good guy. He said he would send me a quote next day or so, but he didn't send it and the week went by. I actually contacted him and he needed a couple of days. He sent it then. He was on time. He answered my questions.
Description of Work: The Village Carpenter gave me a quote to repair the drywall, a little bit of painting, caulking on windows and to extend the downspout.
Surpassed my expectations in every category. Mark was very easy to work with professionally - organized, responsive, and able to communicate via email. He was willing to bring his expertise to the table and consult on the project when I wasn't able to provide explicit instructions. He also asked for clarification on the level of work desired when necessary rather than defaulting to a rush job. After some other renovation experiences this quality of service was unexpected. I hope to keep working with Mark in the future.
Men from other companies that came out told me that it was my skylight and I needed a new one but I knew that I didn’t, because when it rained, the water wasn’t coming in through the skylight and the guy from Village Carpenter, Mark agreed with me. He was the only one that came out and said I was absolutely right, he told me it was not the skylight, it was the wood up there, it was pine wood and apparently pine absorbs moisture and that’s what was causing it. So he took it all down and put up new wood and said that it won’t happen again. He checked my skylight and said it was perfect. He also went up on the roof to put something up there to divert water away from the skylight, just in case, when it rains and he also said my roof was fine. Other people all said I needed a new roof and Mark said 'absolutely not', so he was great and he probably saved me a lot of money. He was clean, he was quiet, and he came here when he said he would come.

Overall, it went well. Mark did a fantastic job and we've already booked him to complete another project.
Description of Work: Mark priority-scheduled the job ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday - and ahead of the arrival of out of town guests. He repaired and replaced soffit on a portion of the house. He cleaned the affected area as well at no additional charge. His work made an immediate improvement and we appreciated his effort to take care of us ahead of our guests' arrival. Mark's response was punctual - as was his completion of the project. Mark provided photos of the project during his effort and following its completion - and forwarded them to me so I could review the job's progress while I was away from home. Mark re-used existing materials when appropriate in order to keep costs down. He also cleaned and hauled debris, leaving the project area clean and safe for children. What's more, Mark completed the project well within his projected estimate.

We've been consistently beyond pleased by The Village Carpenter's work. No negatives to report whatsoever. One thing we'd recommend is that the assumption not be made that he solely does carpentry, due to the name of the business; he is truly a jack of all trades.
Description of Work: We reached out to The Village Carpenter approximately one year ago for some carpentry work. Since then, we've used Mark (the owner) on a multitude of other household projects, including siding, roofing, window repair, plumbing and electrical work, as well as painting and fencing. He truly is a "one stop shop" for a plethora of household projects. Mark provided detailed estimates for every job we approached him with, including supporting photographs in many cases, and never once gave us a final price that exceeded his initial quote - as a matter of fact, he frequently went above and beyond to identify ways to save us money during jobs, while maintaining the integrity of the work we requested. He was also very thoughtful where our pets were concerned, making sure not to leave materials in areas where our dogs and cat would come in contact with them, and securing our back gate every time he accessed it so that our pets wouldn't escape. Finally, Mark is a very friendly and trustworthy guy. On multiple occasions, we've simply left a house key for him hidden outside for him to access our home's interior, and never have we had a problem with things missing or being damaged. We will continue to use his services in the future.

I could not have been more impressed and do indeed intend to use The Village Carpenter again.
Description of Work: Mark Letersky came out to the house during Hurricane Sandy (yes, during) in order to assess potential water damage. He spent an hour discussing the project, answering my questions, addressing my concerns and offering further insight. He priority-scheduled my job for the next day - which happened to be Halloween. He completed the job accordingly, on Halloween, on-schedule and within budget.
