Description of Work: Jim was my Handyman, and he was very professional and courteous. I was quoted his arrival between 10-1pm, which was going to be tight, but work work since I had to be at work at 2pm. Unfortunately Jim didn't arrive until 1pm, which meant that I only had time to go through what needed to be done before having to leave him on his own doing the work, which isn't what bothered me. |The only thing that really doesn't sit well is that when I called for a quote, I described the work that I needed done very specifically, because I'm not familiar with the effort that goes into it, and I was quoted a little over 2hrs, and the estimate cost was going to be around $265-$300. I thought that was amazing, and at worst I was looking at $500 for material and extra time. The final cost of the job was over $1100 for over 8hrs of work. Jim did an amazing job, but one of the tasks wasn't complete, and the cost and time was dramatically underestimated. Had I known the cost, I probably wouldn't have had the work done.

Very sorry that this job required a lot more work than what we initially assessed over the phone, but I appreciate the member's very balanced and fair assessment, including the kind words he had for Jim. I did ask Jim about this, and he mentioned to me that when he looked at the job, he realized it was going to be much more involved and he informed the customer that he would need more time. He had to cut holes in the drywall to run the electric and then repair those holes - I'm guessing the unfinished part of the job is the final sanding and painting of those repairs - I've left the member a message and offered to come back and do that work at no cost. We normally do a pretty good job of estimating accurately over the phone (we would not have earned 18 Angie's List Super Service Awards over the years if that were not the case), but in those cases when we do get it wrong, the tech informs the customer of the situation before beginning any work. If the customer then chooses to cancel because of the revised estimate, they may do so and there is no charge. In this case, of course, the member was pressed for time, so that communication was a little hurried, which may explain the confusion (we did arrive within the quoted time range - but just on the tail end of it. In those cases where we are running later than the agreed timeframe, we call). I look forward to further communication with this member to resolve the remaining issues.

Description of Work: The repairman completed the job satisfactorily; however, the cost was more than $400.00 to do the repair work. The quality of the repair to the hole in the ceiling sheet rock which included mudding and painting was good. So, the work involved repair of a 8” X 8” hole in the kitchen ceiling. Required sheet rock, mudding, and paint + labor. The quality of the completed work was good…but very very expensive as stated a above.

To me, that is the most important thing, as I have always lived by the motto "you get what you pay for." In fairness to the member's concern, I should also point out that this job may have cost a bit more than we originally anticipated. We had understood that we were patching a hole caused by the removal of a light fixture, but it sounds from this description that it was a much larger area (8x8 by the customer's description) than we originally imagined, so perhaps that is why the cost was higher than expected.

Thanks for your comments about the quality of the job. I do recall that we needed 2 men to complete this job because of the height of the 3rd story shutters. We had estimated 1 to 2 hours. It took 1.5 hours. We do give a discount on the 2nd man, but yes, when you need too guys to handle a 40ft ladder, that does increase the cost a bit.

Description of Work: We used Mr. Handyman to remodel our fireplace. They were super! It was a big job and took two days and 3 men total. It involved wallboard, masonry, painting, and more. We were amazed at their determination and skill. Apparently Mr. Handyman only hires handymen with 15+ years professional experience. It shows!
