Everything went well. The owner was very professional, courteous, and personable. They are good at communicating with there customers. They were on time and even a little early. Gale is a very nice person and a pleasure to speak with. I would defiantly use this company again and I would recommend using them.

Mr. Handyman was prompt, professional & courteous from start to finish. I needed some crown molding installed and my deck power washed. I sent an email request for a quote and got a response 5 minutes later from Alan. He clearly explained different service options, how much it would cost, who would be doing the work and how long it would take. I was super impressed even before they showed up! On the day of service, they arrived on time and even called 20 minutes before the scheduled appointment to tell me they were on their way. They did a beautiful job with the crown molding and were very fast, despite the difficult corners in one of the rooms. (I attached a photo. Please forgive my bad photography skills! Everything looks tilted but the molding is actually perfectly straight) The power washing was top notch as well. Alan pointed out some problems with the masonry and some rotting planks on the deck, which I really appreciate. I will definitely be calling them again and will recommend Mr. Handyman to friends. Top notch, A++++ service!

I received no response when trying to contact these people. I suspect it is because I just needed some small jobs done, because the only handyman that responded told me that was probably the case; no sufficient money in it for them to even give me an estimate, let alone show up or do any work. That said, at least a response that they didn't want my business would have been helpful.

Very sorry that you did not hear back from us. Unfortunately I did not get the message. I checked with Angie's List and discovered that member emails are sent to me under the heading "Quick Connect Premium Notice". So I looked for emails with that heading and discovered those messages were going into my Junk mail folder (guess I should check it more often, but it's 99% spam). So sorry we did not respond - we'd have loved to have your business. BTW, there is no job too small for Mr. Handyman. That's true for Mr. Fix-it too (one of the other two contractors who did not contact you). I wonder if they had a similar email situation. In any case, I've sent the member a $25 coupon and hope you he will try me again (and I've changed my SPAM filter to allow these emails!).

We had a very good experience them. We have used them before in three different occasions and in all three situations, we had different technicians. They showed up when they should have and were very clean. They didn't gab on the phone. I was really impressed with them. Eddie Ghingoree is the guy who came out for the dry wall repair. Their price was a little more than we expected, but it was because there was little more work than either of us expected. We have had experience with contractors where Mr. Handyman had to come back because the original did such a poor job that we basically had to rip out what the original contractor had done and redo it and Mr. Handyman has always done a fabulous job.
Description of Work: Dry wall repair. We have used their service to replace shingles and gutters and install a light fixture in the past and then on another occasion, they did carpentry work including installing Dalton bookcase for us.

It took four days. Most of the tasks went well but there was a problem with some of the carpentry tasks. The repair of the inside door frame damage and the completing of the shelving installation. I purchased the requested filler and it would not stain to match, so I purchased another filler as requested and that did not stain to match. On the water softener housing, a filler was used on the bottom portion of the structure which dissolved during the first rain storm. I was told that to wait until I was called back to schedule another date to correct the problems. It has been two months and have never heard back. This is the second time I was told to wait for a call back that has never occurred. I called the first time, but have given up this time. The jobs that did not go well had been attempted twice and because I was paying by the hour, I would be paying to have this repair done for a third time. Update: We agreed to 9am on 2 May 2011. At 10:15am no one had showed up so I called and they said they would dispatch someone and they would be there soon. At Noon I called again and they said that he was on his way. I told them that I was out of time after waiting all morning for someone to show up and that I would not do business with their company again. This is a first for me. They call and ask to come to my house and then they don't show.
Description of Work: The services included a list of things that needed to be fixed after a home inspection and some additional tasks as follows: Replace 2 outside light fixtures with fixtures provided, replace a standard electrical outlet with a provided GFCI outlet, install provided grab bars by the bathtubs, replace lock on door into the garage with provided lock, tighten handrail on back porch, install handrail on inside stairway, replace window, repair some external water damage to wooden siding by one window, repair grout on floor tiling, repair water damaged door framing on one door, repair loose liners on two skylights, remove external antenna wires from side of house, install shelves by computer, repair damage to two door moldings, fix one kitchen cabinet sliding shelf that was loose and repairing the siding on a small section of the lower part of the house on the patio that houses the water softener. Updated: The company contacted me because I had submitted a bad report and wanted to set up a time for a master carpenter to come to my home and correct the faulty repairs done at my home by their company.

Clearly this customer is quite upset, given that she gave us an F grade in all categories even though not all of them are applicable to her concern. As the member indicates, we did about 4 days worth of work and the majority of the jobs were completed successfully. When I learned that there was a problem with two small parts of this multi-day job, I offered to send a man back for free. Unfortunately, we were not able to get to there at 9 am. I do understand that a person’s time is valuable and regret that we were not able to be there at the agreed upon time. But this was a little strange. We explained to the member that we had a man out sick and would get someone there by noon. The member called me at noon, AS THE TECHNICIAN WAS COMING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY, to say, “too late” I’ve waited three hours and now I’m done”. Why not let him go ahead and do the work? He was there. It was free. The member had already waited. Nothing I can do except say I’m sorry and point out to every future customer – we stand behind our word. Yes, sometimes things happen in any human endeavor. All we can do is be honest, stand behind our work and continue providing the quality service that has given us more than 30 “A” ratings on AL, 3 AL Super Service Awards over the last 6 years and more than 4,000 satisfied customers.

The appointment was set for 9:00 a.m. - Ken drove up at 9:05 a.m. He was amazingly friendly, extremely skilled, understood what had to be done and did everything flawlessly. Finished all tasks by 11:15 and left the areas spotless (actually, cleaner than it was before he arrived). There is no doubt in my mind that I will call Mr. Handyman for any and all of those small jobs that my wife and I need done around the home. Fantastic company!

When he came, he didn't have what he needed. He also showed up in a van. Because he came in a van he had to make two trips to the dump and pay $100 each trip. He was here almost five hours. I had to pay for that as well. I called and talked to the woman there and she said that they would probably adjust the price, she just needed to talk to her husband. I have never heard back from them again. I will not call them back. I even had to run to store to pick up things he needed to do the work. It was an all around mess. What he did he didn't do that well. UPDATE: After learning that I had submitted an "F" rating to Angie's List, the owner called me and was very upset. I explained what happened, and he accused me of trying to get additional work done without paying for it. This was absolutely not true! In addition to calling me to argue and raise his voice with me, the owner offered me a $100 refund if I would change what I had already reported to Angie's List. I told him that I would update my entry, stating they had at least responded and provided the refund, but he demanded I give them a much better rating in exchange for the refund. I told him that I was NOT going to lie about their service, no matter how much of a refund he was willing to provide. He was quite angry and stated that he would be posting a response to my report before he ended the call. Both the phone call and the posted response to my ACCURATE report on their service was / is offensive. Touting other successes as an excuse for the service I received by no way changes the facts. I will never even CONSIDER contacting this company again, as at least I know what to expect when paying the neighbor kid to do the job I ask him to do.
Description of Work: When I called them I explained that we had some yard waste that needed to be moved. We also have a patch in our yard that is overgrown. We needed them to cut that down and haul that off. The flyer we had gave prices for the amount of time that they would be working. I told them I was willing to pay for about 2 hours of work. I told them I needed the brush pile out and whatever he could get done on the over grown patch during that time frame.

It is quite regrettable that the customer feels this way. We strive very hard to provide excellent service. That's why we have maintained an A+ rating on Angie's list for years and are proud to have won the 2010 Super Service Provider Award in both Baltimore and Washington. I first learned of this customer's concern when my wife called her sometime after the service was complete to find out if she was satisfied. That is something we routinely do, because keeping our customers satisfied is a core principal of our business (although we now pay an independent service to do these follow ups because our business has grown so much in the last year it was hard for my wife to keep up). At that time (and again now), I really was not able to find a reasonable solution that was acceptable to the customer. She feels that she was overcharged because she only wanted to pay for two hours of work. Yet she had the technician at her home for 5 hours. When I asked her why she let him stay for 5 hours she said "I didn't ‘let him’ - he didn't tell me that he was going to keep on charging me." As to the charges for driving to the dump, the customer acknowledged that the technician explained that he has to charge for his time, the gas, and the fee we pay at the dump and that would be $90. She agreed, but then later told me "I didn't know he was going to charge me that for BOTH trips." (The second trip was necessitated by the additional work – and the technician only charged ½ for the second trip since “it was on my way home, so I cut her a break.”). In maintaining an excellent reputation, we will often go "the extra mile" for a customer. For example, I recently sent a technician back to a customer's home to redo a job, even when the problem was a faulty part that the customer purchased at Home Depot and not a problem with the work we did. But the customer had no way of understanding the difference - she just knew the faucet was leaking - so I fixed it at my expense. Of course, she now realizes that it was not our fault, is greatly appreciative of our extra effort. Better still, my small additional investment of time has been rewarded with another loyal repeat customer. I want to sleep at night knowing that I provide excellent service at a fair price. And I want my satisfied customers to call us again and refer us to their friends. It’s the key to success in a service business. But at some point, I have to ask myself "is this reasonable?" We explain on the phone that we charge by the hour. The technician explains again in person that we charge by the hour, and asks the customer to sign an agreement which clearly states that they understand that they will pay our stated rate for the entire period from when the technician arrives at the home until the work is done (including cleaning up). Is it reasonable to expect that a company would charge for only two hours, but work for five? Why did she keep directing him to do more and more work? (The tech reported to me that the customer, being pleased with the progress he was making, kept adding more and more work to the list. In his words “she really worked my tail off, and she seemed pleased until I wrote up the bill.”) Did she believe that after two hours he was working "off the clock?" Do people who work for a living really need to give away hours and hours of their time for free or be disparaged publicly? Or was he supposed to refuse to keep working when she kept adding to the task? For that matter, why would we charge her for a trip to the dump, and then NOT charge her when the additional work required a second trip? There are some other fairly minor discrepancies in the story above, but to clear the record I feel obliged to respond: I don't publish fliers with prices; I did return the call and offered a $100 rebate; the total charge for two trips to the dump was $135, not $200; and the service call was performed on August 4th, not Sept. 6th. More disconcerting is that when we spoke several months ago the only issue she reported was her concern with the cost - not the quality of the work. Now the customer reports several additional problems including unsatisfactory workmanship. Forgive me if that seems somewhat disingenuous. I should also address the concern about 'having to run to the store for him.' When a tech needs to go and buy something to finish as job, we always offer the customer the option of running the errand themselves while we continue to work - thereby saving the customer money. (Wouldn't that be yet another clue that he was still on the clock?) When I saw this report, (posted a full 8 months after the service), I called the customer again. With my businesses reputation on the line, I really sought to understand her point of view and again offered $100 rebate. The response was that this was not good enough and ended with “I am done with you … click.” I leave it to you, my future customers – Please look at ALL of the reports from our valued Angie's List customers, most of whom are now loyal repeat clients; call and hear us explain how we do business and make the judgment for yourself - is this a case of a dishonest business, or a customer who is seeking to get "something for nothing." Jesse Davis Handyman services took care of my "Honey Do List" which they did extremely well. Jesse was very professional in his communication with answering my inquiry email, providing pricing and scheduling the work. Frank was the gentlemen who came out to the house and he was very polite, professional and cleaned up behind himself as he when from one task to another. He used his time well by during the tasks in a particular sequence that allow one area to dry was his multi task (i.e. prime an area & moved onto a plumbing issue and then back to the painting project, etc.). Frank did some patch & painting, locksmith and plumbing work. In addition to Jesse's professionalism during our initial communication he conducted a follow-up inquiry to ensure that I was happy with their services. Overall I definitely would use Jesse?s company again and would highly recommend them. I will also ask at the time of scheduling future work to see if I am able to get Frank as I was very happy with his overall performance. Two thumbs up!
Description of Work: I don't remember the example date but this is long overdue. I used Jesse Daviis Handyman to what I call my “Honey Do List” which included some patching & painting, plumbing and locksmith work.

So glad you were pleased with the service ... almost hate to admit this ... but, this is a different company. Glad to know there are other honest handyman companies out there (actually most of them are - like everything else in life it only takes a couple of bad apples ...). But [another service provider] deserves the credit, not us, so I hope you will re-post this to his listing. Sorry I didn't catch it sooner!

The company called me at work to let me know when the technician would arrive; he was waiting in my driveway when I got there. He went over the fee structure and company policies, then reviewed my list of projects. Everything I requested was done, except for one cabinet that could not be assembled due to damage to the pieces. He helped me package the box and move it out of the way. Demetrius was competent, professional, and thorough in completing all the tasks on my list. He also made suggestions on future projects I was planning. I do intend to schedule his company again for the other items on my list, after the holidays.

Ken from Mr. Handyman arrived at 8am, well within the 7-9am windows. I told him I had a leak in my master bedroom that damaged the ceiling. He went up on the roof and caulked everywhere possible that water could come in. He then got up into the attic to inspect and found a leaky pvc pipe with he fixed, and told me that was most likely the issue. He then repaired my damaged drywall and a few nail pops that needed some work. The work was done will and promptly all within 2 hours. His skills and manors were top notch. Would use them again!

We are very pleased with the results. The cost of the work was described in our initial phone call and the charges were as laid out. Brian showed up on time and worked diligently. The biggest and most important part of the job for us was the repair of the outside trim and the work on the area that allowed water to enter our attic in bad storms. It looks great. There is the cost of having the repairman go and pick up the supplies but since we didn't know what to get, it was a cost that was reasonable for us. We both felt that we had a handyman with a wide range of experience and knowledge for the work that was to be done. He also examined certain other potential problems and advised us reasonably. He'll get another call from us.
Description of Work: The price above includes the supplies that were purchased by Mr. Handyman for our job. The supplies included some basic supplies but also a box of siding and trim. Brian spent 3 days here and replaced and repaired our siding and trim, solved a problem with water incursion for our attic, checked the shingles and gutters, repaired the soffits, replaced outdoor speakers, grouted stones on the outside walk, caulked the railings on the outside porch, replaced outdoor flood lights, cleaned the dryer vent, removed old caulk and replaced new caulk on 2 large showers, removed old caulk and recaulked in the kitchen, replaced lights in chandeliers. The time included picking up the needed supplies.

Whwn I called to get an idea of costs and scheduling, the lady who answered was polite, knowledgable, and thorough. My conversation with her convinced me that she was familiar with the situation, knew what resources (people and material) it would take to do the repair, and could promise a timely response. This company charges by the hour, with a two-hour minimum, which she assured me was plenty long enough to complete my repairs. Unfortunately for me, the height of the repair site dictated (OSHA) that two people be dispatched and that a longer ladder may need to be rented so the cost was high, but at least I knew that up front and she gave me a thorough explanation of the reasons. The "handymen" showed up on time, even a bit early. I had the color-matched material (aluminum coil) available for their use, but they didn't carry a sheet-metal brake for fabrication - understandable. To reduce rental charges, they took the aluminum to the rental company and fabricated the piece there (after taking careful measurements from the house), then returned. They also informed me that the "clock" didn't start ticking until they returned with the fabricated piece - nice! Their work was thorough, professional, and cut no corners. When finished, the new piece blended in perfectly with no evidence that it hadn't been part of the original siding. And they also secured surrounding pieces so that a future windstorm wouldn't affect them. And they genuinely seemed to enjoy their work - even working 40 feet off the ground!
Description of Work: They fabricated and installed aluminum trim to replace a piece blown off in high winds, and re-installed two soffit pieces also displaced, but recovered. All this on the peak of a 3-story townhouse (way up there!)

Chris was very professional. He arrived a few minutes after the expected window, but Amanda (a dispatcher) had contacted me twice to inform me. Chris efficiently epoxied the dishwasher in place. He investigated the roof for cracks around our bathroom ventilation fan but then realized that the fan had been covered with plastic and was, in effect, just trapping bathroom moisture. (The other bathroom fan had the same problem.) He explained that he needed to get an elbow to install on the vent of each fan. I mentioned that there was an Ace Hardware very nearby, but Chris could not find it and drove to Home Depot (a much longer haul). I expected him to return in 15 minutes, but it was an hour before he returned. When Chris returned, I asked if I also was responsible for paying for driving time -- I assumed so -- and he said yes. He promptly installed the elbows and then applied the first layer of drywall on the bathroom ceiling to begin the process of repairing the water damage. I paid Chris the full amount for two hours of work plus supplies ($264), but I felt that I had paid unnecessarily for a half-hour of time ($48) -- had Chris gone to the local Ace, it likely would have chopped 45 minutes off his time on the job. After Chris left, I called the Mr. Handyman office left a message, and the next morning, Alan, the manager, returned my call. I acknowledged that there was no guarantee that the Ace would have carried the elbows, but Chris should have stopped there before driving all the way to Home Depot. (The workers all have a GPS -- indeed, the manager tracks their routes!) Alan eventually agreed to refund the $48. I appreciated his responsiveness.
Description of Work: Chris, the handyman, epoxied our dishwasher to the granite countertop (it had been loose for a long time), investigated a water problem in an upstairs bathroom -- which turned out to be due to a blocked-off ventilation fan -- then placed elbows on that bathroom fan and another, and applied a layer of drywall to the damaged ceiling in the bathroom.

So glad that you were pleased, but I should point out that Alan is the manager of the Baltimore office - they deserve the credit for this satisfied customer!

I wanted the ugly fan in one bathroom replaced. I purchased what I needed at Home Depot. Mr. Handyman removed the old, and installed the new one, taking care not to damage anything. He also remounted a fan in the ceiling in another bathroom that was pulling away from the ceiling. It took him a while to do it, but he did a good job.
Description of Work: Replaced a bathroom ceiling exhaust fan, re-mounted the ceiling fan in a different bathroom. Also fix an electrical box that had come loose inside the wall.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. If I may add to your advice about sticking to "discrete projects" - many of our customers give us a "punch list" and find it's actually more cost effective to have us do several things on the same visit. When you block out four hours for example (and budget and plan for that amount) and then say "do as much as you can on this list (which the technician can help you prioritize)" than you may find you get even more value by getting all those annoying little things, instead of just that one big item that caused you to pick up the phone. Just food for thought ... thanks again for your kind words.

This job was scheduled with June easily, but then when the day arrived, there was snow and ice - they were due here between 12 & 2, and called about 11 to say they wanted to cancel due to handling their vans on ice. It was easily rescheduled when I called again the next day. Ken arrived promptly on the day of the appt, evaluated the chores, went to get the needed equipment, and then worked steadily doing a neat professional job, with two coats of mud on the wall board joints. He also needed to shim the job in the ceiling in order to make it fit, but it looks great. He then took the needed measurements for the estimate, and told me he would work it up, and June would call. She did two days later with an estimate that is good for a 6 months, so now I need to compare it and then decide. The whole job took 3.5 hrs.............
Description of Work: This was a series of little dry wall repairs - one on the ceiling of a bedroom, that had ceiling board that was a difference size from the piece of dry wall I supplied. Ken also put in baseboard in the gaps left from a long ago project that took down walls to make one room out of two. He obtained the materials, did the little jobs - (six places for the molding, three for dry wall repairs) and did a neat job, as well leaving me with the left over caulk and dry wall mud stuff. I had also asked them to give me an estimate of a future job that was bigger, involving building a closet and putting in a door.

It was very good. He came on time and he just got right to work. He took his time and explained everything to me. He gave me different options for the other things that I want done as I can afford them.
Description of Work: They put up mini blinds, hung a new shower rod, fixed the ceiling in the bathroom, and looked at some other things that I wanted done.

The handyman came on time and we went through all the work that I needed done. He told me what materials I would need, he had some on his truck (charge for supplies included in price) that he used. While I ran to the store for other items, he worked on the projects that didn't require additional materials. He finished within the 2 hours scheduled. Price included a $25 Angie's list coupon. The only issue was I was charged an $8 fuel surcharge that wasn't mentioned when I scheduled the appointment.
Description of Work: Repaired closet ceiling from roof leak, replaced smoke detector batteries, installed digital thermostat, nailed down trim in bathroom, caulked trim in another bathroom and repaired a mini blind.

I wasn't pleased with their service and the work was not quality work. I had used this company before and had been pleased with their work, so that is why I hired them again. The man who came out to do the fence had a broken hand, which I had not been told about until the work was finished. It took him longer to complete the job and the work was not done very well. I had the supervisor come out to resolve the issues which he attempted to do. But things were not finished in the fashion that I thought was appropriate. Also because I was not told of the workman's broken hand prior to the work being done, I feel that the company wasn't honest and up front.
Description of Work: This company rebuilt a fence-two sides of the yard. They also installed an interior door.

Your absolutely right. This was mishandled. The fact that you gave an A for puncuality shows that you are fair minded and honest. This company changed ownership in 2010 and I am happy to report that nothing like this has ever happened since I took over.

It went really well. I liked that they were very quick to schedule and I liked the craftsmanship. He explained to me what he was doing and why. The cost was a little bit higher than what I expected.
Description of Work: We had some drywall we needed to have repaired after water damage. There was mold inside and he helped us fix it, and then repaired the drywall. he also did an installation of a built-in bookcase around a mantel and fireplace. Then he also put in a new entry for a microwave hood exhaust band.

Eddie my technician arrived on time. This service charges in 2hr blocks so it is $235 per hour. I really only needed him for the shower curtain rob, but because I paid for 2hrs I had a list of things I needed done. Eddie worked diligently so I could get the most of my time. He did an excellent job. Strongly recommend.
Description of Work: Hanging of custom made shower curtain rod, installation of drawer and cabinet pulls, and touch-up painting.
