Wow! I could not be more impressed with this company. We recently bought a Little Free Library, which is a large box where people in our neighborhood can come and exchange their favorite books and stories. This is part of a nationwide movement , but since ours is the first one in our town, we wanted it put up quickly and professionally. I spent a lot of time looking at Angie's List entries for Handyman, and I decided this company was the only I felt comfortable calling for a single, somewhat unusual project. And it turned out to be an excellent choice. I first spoke with Kevin in the office who quickly grasped what I wanted. He was able to dispatch a technician with enough materials to start the job. The design and installation was done on two days by two different technicians, Scottie and Matt. Both were prompt, knowledgeable, competent, efficient, friendly and patient with us, and seemed to take an interest in our unusual project. Scottie even improved on the recommended design so it will be more sturdy. I thought the cost was very reasonable since it included all the materials. Our household consists of two female senior citizens. It is very comforting to know there is a honest, reliable, and competent company we can call on for handyman work. We are putting together a list.

He was completely on time. He did a wonderful with the work. He was patient with me in regards to projects I didn't have ready. I was extrememly pleased. All of the work he did was done well, and left some areas looking better than when he arrived.
Description of Work: We purchased a Big Deal with this company for a handyman for a day. He was here for 10 1/4 hours. He fixed several doors. He hung several pictures. He installed shelving and also a curtain rod.

Everything went extremely well. I couldn't be more pleased. The handyman (Mathew) showed up in a timely manner. He gave me a fair price for the work. At no time did I feel like I was being taken (I guess that's why they have an A rating on Angie's List). He was professional and cleaned up after the work was done. I have already talked with Matt about future work in the very near future. I can't say enough about the high quality of the work that was done. The only regret I have is that I forgot to use the coupon provided by the Angie site. Oh well, with the work that I have planned, I'll get to use it in near future. Mr. Handyman, you rock!!!
Description of Work: The handymen replaced the floor in our powder room bathroom and repaired the ceiling in the basement. Also, he repaired a hole in the wall.

First and foremost, I turned to Angie's List as I could not get a company to respond to voice messages in a timely fashion. Mr Handyman had a real live person answering their phones - big plus. Second they offered immediate service, provided a clear understanding of what they did and what the cost would be right then on the phone. The Customer Service Rep was professional and efficient in her conversation leaving me with only the question of what date I would be available. The Service man arrived a little late, but called ahead to tell me what was happening and assured me he would be there in 20 minutes - he was. Upon arrival, he provided me with their brochure showing everything they could handle and asked me if I had any questions. He ran through my "to do" list very quickly making it a "done" list. I loved it. He was polite and professional. One problem did occur the follwing day. One of the rehung doors got stuck on a screw in the track and would not close. I call the Mr Handyman back and another Serviceman was at my door the same day. It was fixed quickly and no additional problems surfaced. It's not that I expect perfection, but it was great to see how hard this company worked to get there. I plan to use them again and again. Good job!
Description of Work: This service provided repair of a hole in the hallway wall, numerous doors of tracks, and repair of outside light fixture.

Had a faucet replaced on a rental property. Tenants were very pleased with quality and responsiveness. The hours billed were almost double the quote and there were additional fees added to the price. Good work, but $500 for a new faucet is a bit much, so I couldn't recommend these guys...at least for small jobs you just don't get the right cost/benefit.

Thank you for sharing your experience, and for pointing out that the job was done correctly and professionally. We normally allot one hour for a faucet, but this one took two. There were complications that also increased the materials cost. The additional charges that the customer refers to are the cost of the faucet (which we had to drive to the store and purchase for the tenant) and other plumbing supplies. The final cost was actually closer to $400, not 500. Still, I can understand your concern that the repair cost more than we anticipated. But we feel the most fair way to charge customers is based on how long the job actually takes - in most cases, that saves the customer money.

The technician, Harley, came to my house on a Sunday, since that was the most convenient day for my availability. We reviewed the various jobs, and he made a detailed list of what was needed. I had already bought some of the supplies with the intention of doing the work myself: the handicap grab bar and the chandelier (it had been in the box in my garage for 3 years, but I was anxious about having my husband climb a tall ladder and mess around with wiring.) On his return visit, the service technician brought all the tools & supplies to do the work. There was a lot of work, and although he spent several hours, everything was done quickly and efficiently, and he cleaned up everything completely. I was impressed. Then I asked Harley to look at the exterior of the North (shady) side of my house, where wood rot has deteriorated the siding. He pointed out things I had missed, and then measured and calculated, and put together a very comprehensive quote for the replacement & repairs. I'm looking forward to having him come back to do that big job before snowy weather sets in.

See above. Nothing was done as they did not contact us.
Description of Work: The customer service person was very quick to respond to my request, however was unable to answer my questions regarding cost. They charge $150+ for the first hour and then in 15 minute increments after that (totalling $96 per hr). I wanted to have an estimate of the time involved in our project before committing to an appt. He assured me that a contractor would call the next morning to discuss these questions with us. No one called. Their unresponsiveness leads me to believe their quality of work would be just as poor.

This is not the only member who has reported having this experience in recent months, and so, although the answer is somewhat personal, I feel obliged to explain. In April of this year, my brother was diagnosed with cancer. In the following months, I have made frequent trips out of town, each with less advance notice than the last. My brother passed away on Monday. I was fortunate enough to make it to his bedside before he passed (although that meant not returning phone calls I received over the weekend, such as this one). I should also point out, for those who are considering using our company, that I have a professional staff and the support of the largest handyman company in the nation. All phone calls are answered by a live representative. My office staff is fully qualified to discuss your needs and schedule a service call. The technicians are the experts who can solve you maintenance, repair and remodeling needs. I am the business owner, not the customer service representative or the technician. Most of our customers never have direct contact with me. Some members, however feel that "they must speak to the owner." Or, they want an fixed price. Or a written estimate. That is not how we operate. I'm not sure why people feel inclined to give an F grade when they learn that our business model is not to their liking, but that is their prerogative. Our customer service representatives in the office can discuss the job with the customer, offer a time frame for completing the work, explain our process and dispatch a professional technician to do the work The tech, who is the expert (not me), will assess the situation, confirm the accuracy of the estimate, listen to the customer explain what they wish to accomplish, offer suggestions, complete the work in a timely manner, do quality work and charge a fair price. The overwhelming majority of those members who avail themselves of this service give us an A rating. That is why our overall average is A, and why we have won so many Super Service Awards, Pages of Happiness Nominations and many other accolades. Those that feel that they must speak to me personally, or get a written estimate, or be given a fixed price, have a different experience - especially in recent months when I had to rely more heavily on my team and could not handle many of these situations personally . I completely understand that there are projects of size, scope and complexity where written estimates are required. We do those on occasions. But that is not our core strength. We are much more oriented toward the homeowner who has a "punch list' of minor repairs that wants them handled quickly, professionally and with some guarantee that the company will stand behind their work. I hope this response clarifies for prospective future customers a bit about why those that actually use our service speak so highly of it, and why some folks are upset that we didn't provide them with the response that they desired. So, if you need a professional, licensed, bonded, insured handyman with more than 15 years experience to complete a variety of repairs on your home, give us a call. I will not be the one answering the phone. But one of our professional agents will be more than happy to schedule an expert technician to come to your home and help you understand why we are the #1 handyman service in the nation. Thanks for choosing Mr. Handyman.

Phone was answered promptly when I called. I explained to the lady what I needed to have done and she told me that they could do the work for me in approximately two hours and proceeded to tell me what the rates were. Mr. Matthew Esterly came the next day right at the appointed time and after making sure that I knew how work was charged went right to work. Mr. Esterly did a great job and was done in exactly two hours. I would not hestitate to call Mr. Handyman again. They know what they are doing. Not only are they professional, they are also pleasant to deal with and do not overcharge.

Matt arrived on time. My main problem was a leaky window and what was causing it. After determining that the wall under the window was salvageable he scraped and caulked my windows. Since these windows had not been done in many many years it took a while. He didn't waste time and did a good job. He also went around and unstuck all my windows. I had him give me an estimate on another repair job I have coming up. I liked the fact that he was very knowledgeable about "other jobs". I wasn't crazy about the higher price of the first hour, but they did a good job and I will be using them again.

Thanks for your honest feedback I'm glad that you were pleased with the service. We do charge a little more for the first hour. That covers the techs travel time and the gas. We could just increase our rates a few dollars to cover that, but since it costs us just as much to travel to a customer's home for a one hour job as it does an eight hour job, we feel that it is more fair to cover that expense up front. Still, I appreciate your feedback and glad that you feel the quality of our work makes us worth the price you paid.

Found these guys on Angie's list, expecting good things and a professional business transaction. I called in early May to discuss our project...the lady said "Kevin" would get back to us. After about 10 days of no response, I tried again (I know this is a busy time of year so I figured I'd give them another chance). I told them I had called before and the lady seemed apologetic and told me we can expect a call from Kevin soon. Didn't happen. Tried one last time in June, left a message....same story. I gave up on these guys...business must be REAL good! Went with another contractor found on Angie's list.

Very sorry that we were unable to provide service to this Angie’s List member. We did not mean to ignore his calls. Indeed, we spend a great deal of time and money promoting our business and are very sorry when a customer has difficulty reaching us. I responded to a similar review that came in just a few days after this one, so I will not repeat myself here, except for a small qualification. My staff tells me that, each time they spoke to the member they offered to help, and indeed, explained that they are able to help. But the member insisted on speaking to me directly. So the staff took a message. As I already explained, I delegated all of my work to my service manager and customer service reps in the last few months. You may see my name (Kevin), or any one of our techs listed on AL and feel that you need to talk to the person mentioned in a positive review. Please understand that, with 50 to 60 customers served per week, that is not a process that we can honor. The people who answer the phone are trained to answer your questions, explain our process, help determine how much time is needed for the job, explain the costs and dispatch the technician. The technician is the expert. This customer would have had a better experience if he had accepted any of the multiple offers to help him proffered by our highly trained professional staff.

Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for sharing your experience with other members. I should address the issue about the first tech not doing well and how we handled it, because I have two other recent unfavorable reviews that involved this same technician. We do an extensive screening process on all of our technicians including a skills test and references. But on rare occasions, I have hired someone who, despite being knowledgeable, having great photos and great references, could not perform to our standards. When this happens, we stand behind our work and our customer and send another technician out to address the problem. That is what we did with this member, and she was pleased enough with the result that she has used us twice more since. Thank you for giving us a chance to remedy your situation. Not everyone is amenable to having work redone when they don't get a perfect result the first time. But we do go to great lengths to make sure that the final result of all of our work is of high quality and the customer receives good value for their money. That is why we have received 119 "A" ratings on Angie's List, and have won 5 Angie's List Super Service Awards.

I actually hired these guys before when I lived in Anne Arundel so I was happy to find that they service PG County too. I bought their Big Deal which was for four hours of service. They came out and caulked the bathroom, replaced light switches and receptacles, and did some drywall patching. I am a real DIY pro, but after a renovating since January, it was nice to have them step in and do some much needed finishing touches. :0)

I find it hard to believe that this service provider has been rated so highly. My whole experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth for Mr. Handyman, this franchisee in particular, and Angie's List. I hired Mr. Handyman to perform a really simple job - hang a 30" upper kitchen cabinet. The "technician", and I use that term loosely, arrived on time. He and I took the brand new cabinet out of its box. The technician, I'll call him, "Sam", proceeded to take off the doors so that it would be easier to carry up the spiral staircase. Made sense. However, I noticed then that he seemed to really struggle with using the drill. He had trouble simply reversing the screws out of the hinges. We arrived upstairs and Sam got himself organized. I spent most of my time in another room talking to someone, but every now and then checked on the progress. Within the first 15 minutes, Sam had hung the cabinet on the wall. Then, he started trying to drill holes into the frame/stile so that he could attach the new cabinet to the existing adjacent cabinet. After about 20 minutes of drilling activity and a lot of bad drilling sounds, I asked if everything was okay. Sam was struggling to pre-drill holes for the screws that would go into the stile. He couldn't get the bit all the way through the wood, kept changing drill bits, and was trying to use brute force. In addition to these problems, he finally said that the screw heads were stripped. It turns out that he was re-using screws to try to be economical. I think he didn't have any screws in the truck and I'm not sure where he got them - maybe out of the old cabinet. Before the appointment, I had called the office to make sure they would have everything they needed, including screws, and was told they would. Apparently not. I also noticed that Sam had secured the cabinet to the wall by placing the screws directly in the 4 corners of the cabinet. I don't know about you, but this isn't the way any cabinet I've seen properly installed has been done. My brand new cabinet was on its way to being ruined by Sam. At this point, I decided to call the office to explain that I was very concerned and asked to speak to Sam's supervisor. Kevin, the owner, called me back quickly. I asked him to come out to inspect the work. Kevin said that he wasn't the technical expert, but that he was sure the cabinet was secure and he'd come out to look at it. In the meantime, Sam continued to make slow progress. Two hours after starting the work, he had managed to get three screws into the stile - one of which had its head stripped - and rehung the doors - crooked. The new cabinet wasn't level, nor was it snug against the adjacent cabinet. I was glad to see Sam go and made the mistake of paying him because he was a BIG guy who already wasn't happy that I had called the office AND because I thought the ownver would do the right thing. Kevin arrived later that afternoon and I showed him the work. He told me that it was the "technician's" second day on the job. I asked him if it might be better to have Sam with someone until everyone knows he's competent. Kevin's answer amazes me: He said, no, his company only hires people who already have the skills to do the job. They are expected to be ready from day one. Then, he went on to brag about how great his company is and the fact that they only do top-notch, 5-star work. Kevin acknowledged that there were problems with the installation and we made an appointment for the following Saturday to have his lead carpenter come out to correct the work. He discovered that Sam only hit one stud with the 4 screws that he drilled into the wall. Still, he continues to insist that drilling screws into the corners of a cabinet is perfectly okay and that this cabinet would not fall off the wall. I asked that the cabinet be completely removed from the wall and rehung, a reasonable request under the circumstances. Kevin refused to agree to this, saying that it wasn't necessary. The next Saturday rolled around and no one showed up within the 2-hour window. I called the office three times - got the national call center each time - and no return calls. Mr. Handyman was a "no show". I needed the work done that day. It wasn't, so I had to pay someone else another $150 to get the work done. I called the office on Monday and spoke to the owner and asked for my money back. He said, no, but finally offered $50. I said "no" to that offer. Instead, I'm here writing this review, which I hope will cost his company more than the $150 refund I requested. If you're in the service business, you don't send out a novice unaccompanied by someone who knows what he's doing and expect to charge for the work when he completely fails. I want my money back.

When the member called to say that she was not satisfied with the work, I agreed to come and look at it myself. As the member indicates, she believes that the cabinet needs to be removed and rehung and I disagree with that assessment. The only issues that remained when I saw the work was that the new cabinet and the old cabinet weren't completely flush at the top, one screw was slightly raised and one of the doors that had been removed was slightly askew. That is not an acceptable result and so I offered to send another technician at no cost on Monday morning to complete the job (this occurred late on a Saturday). The member was not sure if she could arrange to have someone present on Monday, so we agreed that we would touch base on Monday morning, As it turned out, she could not accommodate a Monday appointment and asked instead for the following Saturday, At this point, I dropped the ball. Although it does not serve as an excuse, I should point out that I experienced a family emergency that weekend and left town Tuesday morning, returning on the following Monday (Labor Day). That is why there was no one in the office and the member kept getting the answering service that following Saturday ( I cover the Saturday shift; my customer service reps answer the phones during the week and we have a call center on duty the remaining time). When I returned and discovered that we had missed the appointment, I called the member, apologized profusely and again offered to send our senior tech or lead carpenter to remedy the situation When the member said she did not want to try scheduling another visit and asked for a full refund I replied that the lions share of the work had been completed and therefore a full refund was not reasonable. I offered $50 and she declined. As the member mentions, I am proud of our A rating and the fact that for every review that we have received with a rating this low (half of them from people who did not actually hire us), we have received 9 A reviews and still maintain an A rating. I am also proud to acknowledge that all of our techs have 15 years of experience before being hired, and do not need "on the job" training Mostly, I am proud to point out that when a problem does occur (as problems do occur in any and every human endeavor), we stand behind our work closely with the homeowner to find a reasonable solution. Unfortunately, I have just experienced two consecutive cases where the customer and I could not agree on what constituted fair. But I remain confident that means we will earn 18 more A ratings in the coming weeks.

In addition to the work completed the representative was to strip the deck and place a light in the dinning area. After two visits the work was not competed. However, I was charged in full for the time. This company charges by the hour. If the work is not complete you still will be charged just the same.

I was very sorry that we were unable to successfully strip the paint from this customer's deck. The statement that we charged full price, however, is incorrect. As the member well knows, we discounted the bill by $250. I arrived at the figure based on the members estimate of how much time was spent trying to strip the paint (actually the first thing I did was send another tech at no charge to try again- when that didn't work, I discounted the bill for the time spent on that particular task). I should also point out that we made alternative recommendations, but at that point, I believe the member had lost confidence in us and decided not to try to have the deck sanded and repainted. Finally, I am quite sure the member did not mean to imply that we charged him $2,000 for a gutter cleaning. I know that because, despite our disagreement over what kind of refund would be fair (he wanted $500 off the bill, but that was far more than the amount of time spent on the deck), he was at all times polite and reasonable in our conversations. To clarify, we did two full days of work, which included drywall, wood rot repair, gutter replacement, painting and several other items. I'm sure it's just a matter that he selected "gutter cleaning" (which indeed, is one of the things on his punch list), and then filled in the amount he spent (also correct). In any case, I'm sorry that successfully completing a host of other tasks and discounting the bill for the amount of time spent unsuccessfully trying to strip off multiple layers of paint was not satisfactory, but I am comfortable that we dealt with the situation fairly.

Provider was contacted on approximately 15 July 2013 and I was told by his assistant/office manager that he could come on July 29th to do the work. At that time, I asked to get an estimate before the work would be done. I was told that provider would call me back to arrange a time to come to my house to give me an estimate. The provider never called me back; I never had a voice message from him on either my work or cell numbers.

My sincere apologies. We blew it. The member called our office at 6:51 on a Wednesday morning. The call was answered by our answering service. We should have returned that call between 8 to 9 that morning and we did not. I have sent an email to the member offering a personal apology. We invest a fair amount of money in advertising (although most of our work comes from repeat customers, and word-of-mouth). To ignore someone's call is just bad business. Thankfully, a mistake like this on our part is extremely rare.

It worked out awesomely. They came to do the services right around July 4th. We had some mold on one of the walls in the laundry area and they took down the sheet rock and cleaned up all of the mold and everything and re-did the sheet rock and repainted it. They were great, we used them all the time.

The project went well from start to finish. A minor issue concerning the amount of time it took to complete the bathroom remodel arose but was handled professionally by Mr. Handyman.

Great! Ken arrived on time, was courteous and knowledgeable, and completed all jobs in the expected time. He also provided helpful advice on two minor DIY tasks I asked about. I would absolutely hire Mr. Handyman again.

Thanks for your kind words. We are very glad to know that you were pleased with the experience. I really appreciate your pointing out that Ken was courteous - that's very important to us at Mr. Handyman. Knowledge and skill are obviously the key things you have a right to expect from a technician, but I am also a firm believer that "service with a smile" is needed. Seems like there is just too little of that left in the world today...

My AC died and I was scheduled to take a business trip out of town. Kevin Cryslter was great. A fellow pet lover, he understood my need to have a pet door installed immediately so that my cats could get to the screened-in porch and escape my hot house. Scott came to my home the next day and did a wonderful job in installing the door. It looks great and the cats love it. Bottom line: I have found the handyman I have been looking for and will definitely use the services of Mr. Handyman of Anne Arundel and N.E. PG again.

It went very well. Harley came out and did the work. They came out, and in a few hours, he found the source of the leak, and fixed it all. Then he installed a toilet and vanity in the half bath. He was very prompt. His work was neat and clean. They even had someone come out to fix an issue after the job.

The person that came out was not very enthusiastic about doing the job. They would not work with the supplies that we had, and we found out that it would take 8 hours rather than 4 hours, so we're going to go with another company.

This review is placed on the wrong page. Mr. Handyman of Anne Arundel & NE PG does not service Columbia. When the member purchased our coupon, we made arrangements for her local office to follow through and do the work. I have contacted the member and asked her to move this review to the appropriate page.
