The sales rep was very professional, outlining our options and helping us thru the sizing process, including how to may out the desired circuit breakers to be used. Once the contract was signed, the process flowed according to plan. Our only hurdle was running the propane line from our existing tank. We were under the impression that CDS would, manage all of the activities, including contacting our provider. Such was not the case. Once the line was run and hooked up to the generator, were were good to go. All permits and inspections were handled by CDS. The electricians who performed the hookup were very courteous and professional. I would recommend this organization

Knowing what I now know, had I known before I started, would I do it again? Yes! CDS made sure that all work was done in a professional and journeymen manner. I do recommend to CDS that they and their subcontractors become far more familiar with the Montgomery County ordinances regarding installation of generators and noise abatement regulations handed down by the Montgomery County Environmental Division (MCED). There was some difference as to what MCED says is handed out to electrical contractors at the Zoning Office when permits are issued for Emergency Generators vs. what CDS says is handed out. I would have probably had the generator placed further away from my property line shared with that of my not-so-nice neighbor. The noise abatement fence was very expensive and may have not been necessary had the unit been further back from the joint property line. Would I use CDS again? Yes! At times I felt like I was somewhat of a General Contractor although that is what I had contracted CDS for. But all-in-all, CDS did a great job and all final inspections have been completed successfully. Don't be suprised if you find that CDS uses a lot of fully licensed sub-contractors. CDS runs a big operation and their sub-contractors are top notch and more important, they clean up the work site. While I have not been able to fully verify, I have informally heard that CDS is the Home Depot's authorized installer for HD Generac Generator Sales in the Deleware/Maryland/Virgina areas. If this is the case, they are really a big operation. Just as a pleasent aside, the installation was completed on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 and on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, my neighborhood lost power for 3 hours. Guess who had power - dB noise and all. We were the only house in the neighborhood that had full power. While I did not go outside and gloat, I stayed inside, air Conditioning running, oven baking and yes, I was smirking from behind the curtain.
Description of Work: After the last major power outage in June 2012, which cost my family the loss of 2 freezers worth of food in addition to the 2 refrigerators that we also have, my wife and I decided enough was enough and we would install an Emergency Standby Generator. We also did not like sitting in a hot house without A/C and lighting and without TV, and our computers, etc., etc. Should have done this 5 years ago but I am a little stubborn at times. After some initial investigation and estimates we called CDS regarding the installation of a "whole house" - 20Kw Natural Gas Air Cooled Standby Emergency Generac Generator for our home in Montgomery County, MD. Our selection of CDS was based on discussions and subsequent recommendations with a number of business associates and social acquaintances that I had a great deal of confidence in their candid opinions. Concentrate of the following areas: READ THE CONTRACT: The CDS contract document that you will be required to sign is straight-forward although the clause about change orders and cost for change orders is somewhat confusing. I asked to have the contract modified in a few areas and CDS was readily accommodating in this matter. Main problem was that the contract did not discuss what was to be used as the basis of design which in fact instituted a change to the base design. As I said, they were very accommodating regarding the contract. PAYMENT: Can only address on CDS but they do separate the payments into 3 phases. 1/3 at contract sign, 1/3 at unit delivery and 1/3 after installation but prior to electrical inspection which is the last action that takes place. PLAT OF YOUR HOMESITE: For some reason CDS was unable to obtain the plat for my property at the Montgomery County Zoning Office and it became necessary for me to go down to the Zoning office in Rockville to get the plat so that CDS could then draw down an Electrical Permit. Not sure why they were unable to obtain the plat where I was able to obtain the plat easily in less than an hour. If you have to go down there, one (1) hour is a short time. HIGH dB NOISE LEVEL: The GENERAC 20Kw generator does not meet the Montgomery County Environmental Office maximums for dB noise levels. I would also offer that other sized generators do not meet the mandatory dB levels either. NEITHER DO THE GENERATORS FOR OTHER MANUFACTURERS. These dB ratings need to be ~70dB during the day and no louder than ~55dB at night. This is not a problem if you and your neighbors understand that Standby Generators make noise but that Emergency Standby Generators only run during emergencies, i.e., no power from the electric utility. It might also be prudent to offer a piece pipe to the neighbors, e.g., an available 120V 15amp outlet for their refrigerator and/or freezer. This will not impact your generator capacity. As I found out during the process, the only things that really have a major impact on generator capacity is the 220V usage. I have a lot of Computers and TV's and microwaves on 120V lines that can substantiate this little know fact. NON-COOPERATIVE NEIGHBOR: Unfortunately my next door neighbor did not want the noise regardless of what I offered them, including their own 15amp electrical connection, connected to my home, and it became necessary for me to build a noise abatement fence around the generator. If you need to build a fence or enclosure, remember, you need a permit, at least if you live in Montgomery County. There are different zoning issues if the fence is over 6' 6'' vs. lower than 6'6". All of this information is also available on-line on Montgomery Counties website. REGULATIONS, ORDINANCES AND RULES: What I did find out is that there are a lot of rules and ordinances in Montgomery County regarding noise with respect to measurment of noise and distances from property lines, etc. All of these rules are available for the home-owner, and to the CDS' of the world, to download from Montgomery County'a web site. You can access the documents and ordinances via looking up "generators, montgomery county, md" through google or any other search engine. Unfortunately I found out about the ordinances after the location installation by CDS, i.e., just after my encounter with my neighbor regarding the noise level. I am now, although unsolicited, an expert on generator noise, noise abatement material, fencing and more recently acceptable sound absorbing material flame retardation as published by National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). While this fence does the job, the $10,000.00 estimated cost for CDS' efforts does not include the cost of labor and material in the construction of the noise abatement enclosure fence. CLEARANCES: i strongly recommend that if you are installing a permanent generator, that you either download your specific generator user manual or have your contractor provide the pages regarding clearance requirements from homes, windows, overhangs, etc. to accomodate exhausts fumes and heat. Additionally, I would be present on the day that the unit is delivered to insure that the clearances are met since too close could cause problems during long outages where the generator is running for long periods of time. All manufacturer user manuals are on line and are easily downloadable. USE OF NATURAL GAS: If you use natural gas for the generator you will need to install a larger gas meter supplied by the Utility. CDS took care of the ordering and installation of this new meter and hopefully whoever you use will do the same. There is an additional cost for this larger meter. I was told that this was $399 although in all honesty I have not seen the charge on my gas utility bill. My estimated monthly gas use payments have increased and I assume that this is based estimated anticipated generator use rather than actual use.

I am very torn about this experience. For one, it took FAR longer than promised when I first signed that contract. Three months in the end. Step one was getting the generator delivered. Easy Peasy. Step two was getting a permit taken care of. After several weeks I got a copy from the county in the mail. I figured, if I got it, then CDS got it and will be in touch. Over a week went by before I decided to call back. I got a guy who completely dismissed me; he apparently could not be bothered by someone wanting to know what the status of their install was, in spite of my telling him that I got a copy of the permit sent to me by the county. So we hang up. Thankfully I just was not satisfied with that answer and called back. The lady I got next was SUPER friendly and FOUND their copy of the permit. 1) It seems they misplaced my permit. 2) If I hadn't had called, who knows how long it would have taken and 3) She went to the trouble of looking whereas the first person didn't want to bother. And so begins why I am very torn about this company. The sub-contractoring company they hired to do the gas hookup was ridiculous. After lots of visits between their technician and county inspectors and a lot of wasted time, the hookup was finally done. But it was a joke. I took one day off from work waiting for one inspection that they had CONFIRMED for nothing; he was a no show. Now I realize they have nothing to do with the county, but the fact that they confirmed the date and then the guy doesn't show was infuriating. The hook up failed inspection twice. And on the final day, the electricians from CDS were waiting around for them (the sub contractors) who again CONFIRMED they will be there. They never showed. And when I called them to find out what was going on, I got a barrage of excuses. I do have to say that the electricians CDS sent did a great job. Although no one can explain why, for a 10 circuit transfer box, they used 5 15 amp and 5 20 amp breakers. I overloaded the breakers twice before I realized that they had not replaced all of my original 20 amps with new 20 amps. But the second guy that came over to finish what the first crew didn't (because of the sub contractor) swapped out the 15's for 20's so that's not an issue anymore. I may use CDS again, but I would want to know ahead of time if they are contracting out to someone else and who so I can look them up before I go ahead with the work.

I was orignally looking at a whole house generator, but eventually settled on a professional hookup of a 7500W portable generator due to price and the necessary location of the generator. I had a mixed experience but ultimately would give them a A-. The real issue with my job was that they are really setup for and do mostly whole house generators. The estimate was timely but the estimator didn't know much about portable generators ---- that was what really created a lot of the initial confusion and delay (Again, I understand this a little because they primarily install whole house generators). So, 2+ months later I finally felt confident that a 7500W portable would power what I needed to be powered after I was finally able to talk to the master electrician. I also didn't realize it would take over a month to get the permits and to get on the installation schedule. Then Huricane Sandy was coming. This is what brought them up to an A- because Denise was able to get me my generator early before the install and I just used extension cords the two days after the storm. Fast forward a month later and I just got the hookup to my circuit panel yesterday. Both of the installers were profession and curtious and explained my system very well. So, the estimators need to be versed on portables if that is what they are going to estimate. But the customer service folks and installers are knowledgeable and curtious. Also, they are a farily large company so if you have an issue I believe they will get out to you pretty quickly. I would not hesitate to use this company again, especially if you are going to get a whole house generator!

Member, We apologize for the less than positive service experience you recently had with CDS. When we dispatched a tech to repair the loose cap and clean up your generator, our customer service rep did not realize this visit was to fix an issue that resulted from a previous service call. We have since credited you the amount of the follow-up call. We trust your generator is running well and we appreciate your business. Bob Linck CDS Emergency Power

represensative came to our home and showed us the various generators that they install and service. We chose a GE emergency generator. Service personnel came out and laid out the bed for the generator and installed a platform around the generator bed. The generator was delivered and several mem came out to install the electrical connections. We choose the systems we wanted attached to the emergency power system and they were wired into the box.The gas company upgraded our gas meter and CDS worked with them to ensure connection to the generator. Inspections were completed and we love the security of have emergency power available. All service personnel were professional and knowledgeable and we were very pleased with their work and attitude.

First estimate was provided, as I recall, in November 2011. I was unhappy with the proposed location and capacity of the generator. A second estimate corrected my concerns. The generator was installed professionally and performed perfectely during one prolonged power failure in Montgomery County, MD. I was able to use Angie's discount coupon. Another company could not meet the price. The main downside was making contact and seeming confusion in the head office. I had one or more employees contacting me for the same info. Calls were not returned or delayed return. The office seems to be overworked, and definitely not coordinated. However, the personnel were always polite. The installation proceeded ahead of schedule. I expected problems but none surfaced. I recommend the company.

They were prompt and did a complete and neat servicing of my generator.
Description of Work: I usually service my standby generator myself to save money. What I do consists of changing the oil and filter and cleaning battery terminals every six months. However, I have A CDS technition check it evry two years. Thesix month service if done by their service contract is expensive, but they are prompt and do a good job. I had them install the generator several years ago, and they did an excellent job. The wiring was neatly done and eveyrthing worked from the start. I highly recommend them if you are not a do it yourselfer for simple things like changing oil and filters. But if you are not handy and have CDS service your generator with the service contract, it will insure that your generator works when you need it. This Aug. it was due for CDS to check it out, and they did a complete check. I recommend them.

First I met with the CDS company representative to talk about my needs -- after having done some homework via the Internet about whole house generators, sizes recommended, estimated installation costs, etc. I contracted for a 20kw generator - the price was actually a bit less than what I had estimated using information from the Internet. After agreeing to the contract and making the down payment (1/3 of the entire price), the installation process began. The electrical work was done first - the electrician explained everything that he was going to do and did so in a professional manner. The gas meter was installed (a serious problem occurred with that - but it was caused by Wash Gas techs, not CDS contractors). The new gas line went in quickly and cleanly. The base was built on a rainy day, but the contractor was very pleasant and didn't seem to mind the rain. The last step was for the generator to be delivered and installed - and tested. I was given a quick lesson on how to operate the thing, and eventually got the company to send someone out to reset the automatic test schedule. The gas company approved the installation. The generator has only become active one time since installation - but it worked like a charm. No more than 30-45 seconds after the power went out the generator kicked in. The only issue I had with the entire process was in the decision on where to place the generator, and how to direct the exhaust. I didn't know anything about what was involved, and so I suggested having it installed parallel to the back of my house. This required having a couple of bushes that formed a hedge by that side of the house removed -- regulations require that nothing block the generator up to 6 feet. That suggestion was accepted. However, I found out (after the base was built) that it probably would have been better to have the generator placed perpendicular to the house, with the side emitting the exhaust facing my backyard. No bushes would have had to be disturbed. So -- my only issue was was with its placement and why it was so important had been more thoroughly explained, and that my suggestion could have been met with a better suggestion in its placement. When I was working, I found out one major problem with getting new things done is that the purchaser doesn't always know what questions to ask, and the service supplier doesn't offer more detailed advice. But ... this was a minor issue, and overall the experience was very positive (except for the gas leaks caused by the installation of the gas meter - done by the Wash Gas tech -- thank goodness my laundry room is not air-tight).
Description of Work: Contracted with CDS via the Home Depot to have a whole house generator installed. This project took about 1 month to complete, once the generator arrived. Steps that were taken before the generator itself came -- appropriate permits acquired, new electrical box installed (which connected to the generator itself), new gas meter (done by Washington Gas contractor) installed, new gas line from meter to generator outside installed, and outside base for generator built.

CDS cleaned up everywhere they had worked at my house and left our house with no mess or dirt. They did everything exactly as they promised and had described in the initial visit. I would rate them A+.and I highly recommend.
Description of Work: CDS initially came at my request to measure up and estimate for a full, natural gas powered 17KVA standby emergency generator system at my house. But after surveying and measuring they discovered that due to regulations, I had no place to install the generator outside my home due to clearances from windows or my A/C condenser unit. I was disappointed but the rep offered to do a "turn-key" full install of transfer switch and plug-in connection if I bought a portable generator (they did not sell the portable type). He explained the electrical load capacities that were required and how much generator I needed to buy to provide the power I wanted. I agreed to that offer and the next week I purchased a 6500 Watt portable generator from a local supplier. Once I had the generator, CDS was scheduled to come out and perform the installation on Friday 10/28. CDS electricians arrived in the morning on 10/28, and spent the next 5 hours installing the "turn-key" generator power distribution system in my home. The installation included a heavy duty transfer switch built into a new 12-circuit subpanel in my basement next to the main electrical load center. From that they ran a heavy 10-3 cable to a generator connector box on the rear exterior wall of my house. The installation allows me to plug in my portable generator while it is in the driveway using a 30 ft cable that CDS also provided that fits my Honda generator's 30A 240V outlet. Once the generator is running I can go down to the basement and throw the transfer switch and presto! Eight of my 120V 20A circuits in the home have power. CDS helped me determine which circuits I could connect to the generator power, including the refrigerator, the gas forced air furnace, the kitchen microwave and room circuits (outlets and overhead lights) in all three floors of my home. CDS made sure that several "multi-circuits - where my home builder's original electrician used a cost-saving (that's the polite term….) method of running only one neutral for two adjacent circuits - were not split up in the generator panel, because that would cause problems and potential code violations. The electricians were both very professional and their work looks great - all wiring is visually neat, all circuits were tested and labeled. The circuits that they moved into the new generator-powered subpanel were red-marked in the original panel so as to be obviously not used in there. They had me start my generator, plug it into the new outlet on the back of the house, and then they taught me how to throw the transfer switch over to generator power, and then back to our utility power when service was restored.

From my research they looked to be organized and it looks like a company who has been in business for a while. They were organized on their appointment and their follow up. They give you the impression that they are going to do what they say. They have put in tons of generators it appears and I think whatever one looks at, it is the service and the maintenance that is the key. If you spend time on your generator it is okay but it is the company that makes or breaks it and if you have a generator sitting there that doesn’t work. They were prompt and on time and the follow up was there. The installation is going to take place in another 5-6 weeks. I bought a warranty plan from them but I wouldn’t recommend it. It is more of a profit maker for them than me. I bought it but I shouldn’t have.

The electrician and his assistant arrived at the scheduled time. He didn?t have the panel or measurements. I mentioned that the other electrician had the measurements and he said he was just informed of the job that morning (I had known his name for almost two weeks) He took measurements said it may be necessary to cut down the opening to fit in the new panel. They left to obtain parts and returned within an hour. The panel was a 42 slot (vs. 36 in the proposal) and almost twice the size of the old one ? they said that it was the smallest one their source had in stock. I asked about the permits and got a blank stare. When they pulled the old panel down they kept three of the old double pole breakers. I asked and was told that their source was out of them and they were going to reuse the old ones. When they finished the wiring was neat and the work looked professional. However, they just rehung the broken seal on the electrical meter. Another blank stare when I asked about this and the consequences with the power company. As for the 42 slot panel, only 23 slots are now being used. After I thought about this for week I called CDS and indicated that I had some concerns about the job. I was put through to a gentleman and asked - 1. Did I need ARC breakers for the bedrooms? 2. Did I need a permit? 3. Should I inform the power company about the broken seal? 4. In a new panel, how long should these three 33 year old reused breakers be expected to last? He said he didn?t know what good it would do to get a permit now. He was in sales and would have a master electrician call me to address the other issues and was sending him an E-Mail as we spoke. The next afternoon I called him again since I hadn?t been contacted. He said the electrician was out making estimates, had the E-mail, and would be contacting me. That was last Friday ? today is Thursday. I called the county and determined that ARC breakers are not needed unless a room was being re-purposed to a bedroom and -YES- I definitely need a permit. My mistake was not terminating the job when they arrived without the 36 slot panel and/or proper permits. Not being able to have someone address my concerns, valid or not, tells me all I need to know about CDS.
Description of Work: My washing machine was not on its own circuit and I needed it moved to the one remaining open slot on the main panel. I went to Home Depot and arranged for this. CDS called and scheduled an appointment. The technician arrived on time and determined the open slot was blocked by one of the main wires from the meter. He also noted that the panel was an old split bus which has been attributed to fires in certain cases. He gave me a written proposal for $1300 to replace the old 26 slot panel with a new 36 slot. I was concerned that the box would exceed the opening in the finished basement wall so he took measurements. I mentioned that even a 32 slot panel would be good and that there was a 4 outlet box under the panel that could go to free up space. I asked about permits and he said that they would take care of all permits (Fairfax County, VA). I checked Angie’s List and noted a number of positive comments. (Now that I look again most of these are from the same day - 9/9/2011). Around 9/14 I called the CDS Baltimore office and scheduled an appointment for 9/26. I was told the name of the electrician at that time. I called again a few days before this to insure that the measurements were passed to the new electrician since I didn’t want a lot of work to fix the finished basement wall. I left a message and asked to be called back. I wasn’t called back. The next day I called again, spoke to a lady on a different extension and was told that they would have everything they needed when they arrived.

When the company came out for the estimate everything went as planned. I just decided to go a different route. During the estimate they were very thorough in explaining the process and what would happen.
Description of Work: They gave me an estimate on a standby generator.
