When my mother died in 2012, she left me her wedding rings and first choice of the rest of her jewelry. To have them appraised, I called several jewelers on Angie's List and this provider was the nearest one and the most reasonably priced. I was still surprised by the expense of having each piece appraised, and had only 3 of her rings appraised, as the cost otherwise looked to be more than most of the pieces might be worth. They told me just to walk in on the day I suggested and attended to me promptly. The appraiser seemed to know what she was doing and valued the gold band on the spot and kept the rings with diamonds to clean them first in order to judge their clarity and color best. She returned them all the next day in sparkling condition with her estimate. |I brought some other rings and a necklace and bracelet set with me, in case I could sell the rings or in case I changed my mind and wanted them valued too. She said they wouldn't be able to sell them as they were not in fashion now (and they did not take jewelry to melt down!). Free of charge, she confirmed their settings were fine gold or silver and the stones were genuine. To my surprise, she told me that not all the stones in the Native American necklace and bracelet were turquoise, but that one was probably larimar, a blue-green stone also popular in Southwestern jewelry, and she advised me to take them to a specialist if I wanted them valued, as most of their value was in the craftmanship rather than the materials, and she was not a specialist in that area. She explained how she did the valuations of the gold and diamonds in Mom's wedding rings as she went along, and I felt I had learned something about the process too.

My ring appraised for quite a bit more than it was bought at, so I was pleased. I also think the cost of the appraisal was very reasonable.
