It went perfect. It has been approximately 9 months and the water pooling in the yard has improved significantly. Professional, timely, and informative service.

I had a leaking window and John Krause Construction took the time to explain the issue and what was needed to repair. The guys where on time, very nice, and professional. After the work was done they cleaned up the debris. I will be calling them in the spring to schedule some other work that I need to get done.

Roof & window we're repaired immediately. They showed up the following day after my initial call and provided an accurate estimate. Work commensed right after I signed the contract. The siding took a bit longer due to difficulty matching my 16 yr. old siding (an exact match was no longer being manufactured). I learned this is a common problem. Once an acceptable match was found; the work was completed promptly and correctly. Every effort was made to satisfy me (the customer) and they succeeded. I would hire them again for future needs.

I had Kenny come out for an estimate , he came out said he would have it to us in 48 hrs. This was on a Thursday afternoon. Being as it was the end of the week I figured he’d have it to us by Monday. I never got it so on Wednesday I called there office and they said he’d call. I decided to call Kenny direct and he didn’t remember who I was so I refreshed his memory and he told me the work I needed done would cost more then we had In our budget. I told him I actually had more money could he send the estimate that we had to at least get some work done. We had 12,000. $ !!! He said he was having trouble with his email but he’d send it by someone else’s if his didn’t work by the end of the day, or he’d call me and go over it. Either way he’d get it to me. I never got an email or a call from him. The next day was thanksgiving. It is now the Monday after Thanksgiving and I haven’t heard a thing!!!!!! He told me we were getting work done at a good time because they were slow , I guess they didn’t need my Business after all!!! I would never trust them to do work on my home or refer their company to anyone I know. Their professionalism is beyond disappointing and this to me it’s a sign of how that worked be.

When I first called, there was an immediate response within a day or so and someone came out to look at what I needed and assured me they could do the work, but that he couldn't give an estimate and that someone else would call me the next day to schedule a time to come out but that they charge $200 just to come out. Robert, the person who was supposed to contact me to set up the estimate, never called me back or returned my calls. I would not recommend them.

Ms. [Member Name Removed]: When we send a salesman out to do an estimate, there is no fee. However, as stated in the phone call, there is a $200.00 charge to come to the location for any service work. We were advised that you did not want to pay a fee for a technication to come out. We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have occured.

Apparently someone went out to site to provide an estimate. After a week I had to call to request it. First time, the person who answered the phone said the estimator was actually working on it. A week later I called and the same person said they would give the estimator my number to return call. Never received a call so I didn't bother to call back.

Work was high quality. The job took a while to get started because they were backed up just like all the other local roofers due to a large storm that damaged many roofs in the area. Once started they finished in one day and cleaned up well. Unlike several other contractors that provided me estimates, John Krause construction did not inflate their prices to take advantage of the market conditions. I feel like I was charged a fair and reasonable price for the work performed, using upgraded architectural shingles instead of 3-ply and also installing water/ice shield and drip edge as per latest building codes. Some of the other contractors wanted to just go over the old shingles rather than R&R and charge me just as much!

Update to my 4/22/2017 review. We thought everything was cool until a few weeks after they left. Pond has been leaking for almost a year. Pipes not connected properly (3" pipe to 3 1/4" with no coupling). Pipes not buried deep enough. Plants we asked to be removed weren't removed. Terrible work.

I called after I realized several shingles came off of the house while the wind storm was still happening hoping to get "on the list" to get repairs done. I was surprised when they came out within an hour and a half, but it was still too dangerous for them to get on the roof because of the winds. The worker said he would be back out the next day at 11. He showed up just a little after 11 which was impressive. He completed the job quickly and gave me a very detailed report on what he did and the overall condition of the roof (its going on it's 15th year). He cleaned up and left everything the way it should be. The only concern was the cost ($275) as it seemed a bit higher than what I thought it would be. HOWEVER, considering they came out the same day I called...returned the next...and made me a priority, I realize that is worth the cost. No complaints and I would defiantly use them again!

My B rating was due to a miscommunication regarding the day the work would take place. I mailed my down payment in and next thing the supplies were delivered so i had to call to confirm the day of installation. Only other thing is I would suggest they sweep area with a magnet. Although they did a good clean up job I did have to pick up a lot of nails and a bush was damaged but should be okay. I did expect some minor damage to flower beds since i have several against the house.

They were unable to provide a drawing or contract to show what work was going to be done. They only snapped a photo of a house down the street and said it would be similar. They gave my wife an estimate and then changed it after I started to ask questions. They were going to need to move hose bibs and electric plug that they missed during the original bid and jacked up the estimate by $6000. I never called them back as I cant trust a company that is unwilling to provide a drawing and changed they estimate without showing a contract that gave an itemized list of work to be done.

Let me start by start by saying I am sorry for the confusion. After our preliminary qoute, and getting the firm details from you the price was adjusted to make sure we could do the job properly. We sent the itemized contract, if there was an issue at that time, I wish we had known. We are sorry we could not meet your monetary budget. We always try to accomodate all of our customers whether they use us or not. If there is any thing more we can do in the future please call.

I thought about this all day and felt more insulted by his attitude. The next morning I called his office and told the lady who answered the phone that I would not need his estimate, and explained why, telling her the same thing I have written here. I have found a very good contractor who is doing my bathroom the way I want it done. No, I definitely would NOT recommend John Krause Construction.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate for a remodel on our bathroom, removing shower tile, install bathtub, toilet, plumbing, new vanity, flooring, the usual things done for a bathroom. The space is 11x5. I told Mr. Krause what I wanted, he asked about my budget and told me what he thought it would cost, $11-12,000. The figure was about what I had expected. Just a couple of minutes later, he said to me, "Why don't you just spend about $30,000 and knock out this whole area and give yourself a nice spa bathroom?" I was so shocked at his suggestion, I told him that is not what I wanted, I had already told him what I wanted. I got the real feeling that my job would have been too small for his company and that I couldn't afford his service. I felt like he looked down at me and talked down to me almost from the time he walked into the room that I wanted to have redone.

I met with Miss [Member Name Removed] to give an estimate for her bathroom. I had a complete understanding of what she wanted. I made an effort to enhance the suggestions the customer had. These were just that, mere suggestions. I had no intention of insulting her. No job is too small for our company. Gentleman who came out to give the estimate told us that the moldy-smelling, black material on the wet baseboard was not mold but was some leftover by-product of the MDF. It's definitely mold as confirmed by 2 other professionals and a home test. He also refused to give us a written estimate. He told us we had a problem with water so he was going to rip up everything, regardless of whether the materials actually needed to be replaced, put down new, and we wouldn't have a problem anymore. $12,000. He said that his company didn't do little jobs. Just big jobs. However, they are listed on Angie's List in Carpentry-Unfinished. We would never consider hiring this company.

In response to your review, I met with Mr. [Member Name Removed], not Mrs. [Member Name Removed], and as I inspected your water stained MDF molding, the damage I found didn't wipe off like mold. It looked like a water stain. I immediately looked upstairs and it was not leaking from the upstairs. So, I proceeded to look outside at the roof and went to the cause of the problem. After finding the leak, I explained to Mr. [Member Name Removed] that the roof was improperly installed. I gave him a verbal estimate on what needed to be done to keep water from coming in. After the conversation, he explained that he could put the molding back on and paint it himself. I asked him to talk it over with his wife and call the office if he was interested in going forward with having the work done. We always handle our estimates in that manor. I apologize if there was a lack of communication on my part. Due to the fact there was prior work done to that area, I feel you should go back to the original contractor, so they could stand by their work. If the prior contactor needs further information to find out where the leak is coming from, I would be glad to stop by and meet with him.

Called and spoke to very kind secretary. The only time they could come look at it (and do the job, as I was told) was the next day during the day so my husband called off of work. Tim came and looked at it and gave us an estimate and took some pictures. Did not tell us when it would be completed. Sent a contract saying they had 6 months to complete the project but no date was provided. We called and emailed multiple times before getting a response. Time finally responded and scheduled us for 9am the following Wednesday. My husband took off of work again for this. 9am comes and they did not show up. My husband called and they said they would be there at 12pm. They again did not show up. My husband called again and they said they would be there at 2pm. Tim's team came at 2pm and did not have the needed materials for the job. Tim did not communicate what they would need to his team, only told them the height of the ceiling. Once again, we had to reschedule for 7am the next day. My mother had off of work and offered to come over while they were there so my husband and I would not have to take off of work again. They did not show up until 8:15am. The project was completed and looks great but the road to getting there was very rough.

The initial visit took place in early spring, with snow still on the ground, in retrospect, a mistake.. I needed my yard gently re-contoured to guide water away from the house, and then landscaped. Because I was new to the region, I relied on the landscaper to choose appropriate plants. I realized that different zones in my yard were much drier and much damper than others, and conveyed this to the landscaper. He developed a plan with different plants in different zones. We had several initial meetings to discuss strategies for mitigating water build up right next to the house that flooded my basement. Despite this effort-- and the landscaper did bring in equipment to contour the yard --the strategy did not work. After a year, the walkway he built on the damp side of my house, has sunk and disappeared. So has a long drainage ditch filled with stones. The plants, which he planted not so much in groups, but in one line running around the edge of the yard -- four of one kind of plant, then four of another species, etc., -- either thrived or died in these sets of four. The plants that died tended to be in zones that needed more light or different water conditions than existed where they were planted. In one part of the yard where all the plants were dying I realized that the soil was loosely piled up and water was running off from underneath -- a contouring problem. I found the landscaper to be unresponsive and rude to a simple query about plants promised and appearing on the working design, but not appearing in the yard. In response to the landscaper's rudeness, the company did contact me to offer me a free Angie's List membership, but they did not produce the plants.

To be completely upfront, I should first make it clear that I did not have any work done, my comments are strictly based on the estimate/initial home visit. I also want to start with a few positive things that I did like about this encounter. First, I believe this business is based in Southern Maryland or someplace well outside the beltway, so I greatly appreciated that he drove all the way to my home just for an estimate. Secondly, I appreciated that he showed up on time, which is important for me as I have a bit of a tight work schedule. Lastly, I should note that he did seem to know his stuff, and understood what I wanted to have done. But here are the concerning things: First, as soon as he arrived, he immediately began pointing out other issues that were not directly related to the porch, such as noticing that some of the trim around one of my upstairs windows was rotting, and that there were a couple of missing shingles on my roof (gee thanks, I also have a hole in my left sock, want to talk about that too?). This really wasn't a major issue, but it was an immediate indication that he was fishing for extra projects. Later, after assessing the kind of work that would need to be done to the porch, he quoted me $18k, which at first appeared fairly reasonable. But after asking a few more questions, I learned that this estimate would not include any of the paperwork necessary for required permits, or even a drawling/sketch. He recommended that I do the paperwork/permit myself if I wanted to keep the price at 18k. I asked him how much more he would charge if I took care of everything except for the required drawling, he said that alone would cost an additional $2,000! By this point, I was getting a little nervous and wanted to make sure I had the specifics nailed down. So I asked if he would provide me the price in writing. He immediately said that he would not provide anything in writing, and that if I had any doubts about his work, I should look at the reviews on angles list! I don't care if someone has a 1,000 positive reviews, any contractor worth your business should always provide you an estimate in writing, and they should be completely upfront about any additional costs. Perhaps he's good at what he does, maybe I would have loved his work, but it's just not worth the risk.

Mr. [Member Name Removed], I want to start out by saying, I am grateful for the opportunity to come out to do an estimate on your home. As I do appreciate all feedback, positive and constructive, I would like to provide you some clarity on how I handle my estimates and why. As a construction professional, I always provide feedback on issues I think should be addressed, that not all homeowners notice (whether I do the work or not). My purpose of pointing out additional items is for the homeowner's benefit. This is due to the mere fact that if some issues are not taken care of in a timely manner, these small projects could turn into large projects quick, costing the homeowner more money than they should have had to pay if they had taken care of the issue more promptly. I pride myself on trying to find ways to save homeowners money (upfront or down the road). In regards to providing a written estimate, I would like to state that I, John Krause, do all of the estimates for my company and some weeks I am doing onsite estimates for over 10 hours a day. With that being said, I always provide written estimates to homeowners who are leaning towards using John Krause Construction, Inc. to do the work. I do not have the capacity to provide written estimates to each homeowner that is "shopping around", this is just not feasible. I live up to my verbal estimates, as these are part of our reputation of which we uphold to the highest standards. We are a small, local construction company who take pride in our work and always go out of our way to make our customers happy. I truly hope you will consider John Krause Construction, Inc. in the future.
