When I finally did all I heard were complaints about how far they would have to come to get to my place and how Angie's List had misrepresented them. They did the work but wanted to charge me extra for a service that was included in their advertisement. Some aspects of the work were sloppy as well.

+ -1 moreLet me start by saying that we LOVE how our patio turned out. My husband and I tried to instal a DIY patio last fall but after spending an entire weekend we realized that we didn't have the skills or expertise. This spring I found another company that said that they would finish the job prior to our annual Easter Egg hunt. However, as it got closer to the date the other company flaked out at the very last minute. Desperate to find someone to do the job at a reasonable price, I found Mulberry Bush Landscapes. The owner Joe came by that same night. He spent nearly an hour with me discussing the project and promised to have the project done in three days! I was expecting to get a square patio b/c given the short timeline, I never thought there would be time for anything fancy. But as Joe and I talked about my vision for the yard he suggested rounded edges and gave me some ideas. I could tell he knew his stuff so we agreed on a price and he got to work the very next day. Three days later, our back yard has been TRANSFORMED from a make-shift patio into a stunning paver patio with curved edged surrounded by beautiful landscaping. Joe also went above and beyond in every way. He made sure that every part of the patio area was perfect which included adding a sealant to the brick by the foundation to protect from water, grading around the house near the patio to again protect from water, raising a window well so that the newly graded area was at the right height, adding landscaping around the patio to create a smooth flow/transition. Joe was as nice as he could be. So professional and he really cared about his work and wanted to make me happy. His team was also prompt, polite and they left my yard looking amazing! All of my guests thought it looked amazing and we now have a finished backyard that we can enjoy for years to come! I can't say enough and HIGHLY recommend him. A great guy who does great work!
Description of Work: Install a 13 x 16 foot patio with paver stones that was then cut to allow for beautiful rounded edges, landscaping around the patio area to complete the look and feel of the project (including edging, mulch, placement of additional loose flagstone that we had to create an attractive pathway to the patio). Removal of bushes near the project. Bushes were then replanted around the patio or yard as requested.

Description of Work: Yard work performed. Crew showed up without appropriate tools. They used a weed whacker for weed clearing work in the beds that bordered the house (the weeds will be back easily). Perennials whacked to the soil line. Indiscriminate hedge and azalea trimming.

+ -1 moreIt went well overall. The appointment was easy to schedule and the guys were prompt and worked quickly and efficiently. The only issue I had was that when I was booking the appointment, I told them I need my grass cut. Now I don't own a lawnmower, and I assumed that since this is a lawn service, they would be providing the lawnmower. Needless to say, when the guys showed up to clean up my yard, they asked me for a lawnmower, which I didn't have. So I had to call the owner to schedule another time for them to come out with a lawnmower and cut my grass. Thankfully, they came out 2 days later with a lawnmower and didn't charge me anything extra, but I think that the owner should have told me in the first place that they don't standardly put lawnmowers in their trucks. So, if you use this company and you don't own a lawnmower, make sure you let them know that the first time you talk to them.
Description of Work: They did a pre-winter yard cleaning which included raking all of my leaves, pruning all of my annuals, pulling up all my dead plants, and cutting my grass.

+ 3 moreThe guy tried two or three times to get a time to come out to me, and one time he left me at home waiting for him and missed his calendar appointment. He charged me 250 dollars to take away some things that he cut. I felt that it seemed a bit much, and this seemed a bit illegitimate. This ended up not being much of a deal because of this extra cost. He told me that part of the price included somebody come to do a design for my back yard, and this person would call me. That never happened, and I was so busy that I never followed up too much. I didn't think the guys did such a great job on what they did, either.

Discussion with the Company Owner re: trimming my formerly dense shrubbery at the front of my house resulted in my agreement to remove the majority of the shrubbery for additional agreed upon fees. The work was performed satisfactorily; however, I had to remind the workers to remove a large portion of the resulting debris from my front lawn which was done over a 2-day period

+ -1 moreThe person I spoke to on the phone was very helpful (I believe it was Joe). He said he could send some guys out that very day which was a huge convenience. I spoke to him about having some mulch laid and he let me know that the men should be able to go get the mulch and spread it down with no problem. When the men arrived, they were not aware that they needed to go get mulch. As I spoke to them, I could tell they did not want to do it. They said they didn't know where a home depot was, they don't know what kind of mulch to get. I had answers for all their questions but after a while, I just didn't want to continue on and on with them. I told them to forget about the mulch. I asked them to clear the weeds from the garden, mow and edge. I felt this was enough work for 4 hours. They cleared the weeds, mowed and did the edging only around the garden area and not on the rest of the yard.
Description of Work: Same day service! Did most of the work asked but not all.

Description of Work: Never again. Workers were slower than others I've used. Got the feeling they were trying to milk other hours out of me by working slow. The company has two owners. When I originally called, I spoke with the male owner. The guy was nice enough, but didn't do what he said he would do. We booked a date for service. He said he'd call the day before to confirm. He never did call and his guys didn't show up on the expected day. He also convinced me to pay extra for fertilizer. It seemed like it was a good idea, so I said yes. When the guys finally came to do the job, they forgot to bring the fertilizer. They didn't charge me for it. But it seemed silly to spend so much time talking about it, then not load it on the truck. Anyway, after they didn't show that first time, and I waited a few days to hear from them, finally I called them to reschedule. This time, I got the other owner on the phone, a woman, who proceeded to accuse me of trying to get more work out of her company than I'd paid for. All I wanted to do was book a time for them to come do the work I purchased. That's it. I was the weirdest conversation I've ever had with someone I've hired to work for me. She kept saying over and over again, " just realize if all you want is the 4 hours of man time you paid for, I'm not going to send our guys around the beltway later again for you, just to put down a few more bags of mulch, not with the cost of gas these days, etc....." I kept reiterating that all I wanted was the services I paid for. She kept repeating the line about the beltway, again and again. It was truly odd. She seemed really unhinged. Then, she asserted that I was angry with her (when in fact she was the one being rude and angry, obviously hating her job). Anyway, she ultimately said to me that she was hanging up and the other owner would call me. She hung up. I called back immediately and she refused to pick up the phone, just let it ring. I called several times more and finally an answering machine picked up. I left a message for the other owner to call me a.s.a.p. on my cell phone, so I wasn't housebound waiting for a call back. When the male owner called back, and I explained what transpired, he never apologized for her behavior, rather, he justified it, saying, "We've had a lot of people buy these deals, then expect additionally services for it, like free mulch. She is just upset at the customers who do that." This was truly perplexing to me, since all I wanted was what I paid for, 4 hours of work on my yard! So, essentially, I was abused by this woman, cause other customers had treated her badly.....they obviously ascribe to the philosophy, "Have stress, pass it own." Clearly, I will NEVER use this company again. If you are a masochist, then use their services. Otherwise, I recommend Grow Landscaping (Paolo is a GENIUS and his crew are miracle workers! ) Also, Jimmy Garbak's company is awesome too.

Then when they arrived to give an estimate, they decided to do the work right then, but since they didn't have the proper equipment they couldn't haul the brush away. Next, it took them several days to return to haul away the brush. Finally, when they did return, they drove up on the lawn with the truck and left deep ruts in the grass. I called several times to have someone come and repair the lawn, but no one ever did come.

+ -1 moreWe bought the deal to provide 4 work hours towards leaf cleanup or other services for $199, normally $400. Four men spent 4 hours cleaning up leaves and completed the job well and quickly on the weekend before the Thanksgiving holiday. This completed the deal that we purchased. $100 per man hour for leaf cleanup, which is their normal price, seems like a lot to me, but I have nothing to compare it to. The deal also offered a 15% discount on a future job. We had them do some weeding, moving of plants, and putting in some pansies in 4 areas at the front of our house. I believe this was started in December. It is the end of January and still not completed. We were quoted $1100 for this and so far have only paid $750. It is not yet finished. Nothing was said about the discount. We asked for a breakdown of the costs, which was minimally provided (lump sums for each area, no breakout by labor or material costs). We are awaiting 2 plants; 1 is a new plant and the other is a replacement for one that was lost by them. Joe has said that he will come on 2-3 occasions to finish, but has not yet done so. It is very difficult to connect with Joe as his voice mailbox is always full and he does not always call or email back in a timely manner or come when he says he will come. There is also sometimes a miscommunication about what is to be done. In this case, a larger bed was made on the side of our house than we thought we had agreed to. In general, the quality of their work is good and they were very helpful in assisting us in deciding what to do with our landscaping. Problems occur with regard to communication and timeliness--what is agreed to, understanding costs, making contact, coming when they say they will be there. This, unfortunately, makes it difficult to work with them.

+ -1 moreIt went badly. After agreeing to provide the estimate as requested, they showed up a month later without specifically notifying me. This was after multiple promises to "come soon." I was so desparate by then, I allowed them to perform work without the written estimate. They collected $500 from me. They performed the basic cleanup on my two gardens and the mulching, but the work was interrupted by rain. They had promised to follow up with the written estimate, and to return to complete the work in addition to suggesting some additional plantings. I have no idea what they actually accomplished, but they were not there long enough to do much, and there were stll weeds. I had even given them my rose fertilizer and insect treatment to use - I have no idea if they did, but they took the materials with them. Even if they did some spraying/treatment, it was probably not effective, due to the heavy rain. I never heard further from them. Three months later, without contacting me, they showed up and spent approximately 15 minutes rapidly doing some weeding and pruning. They left - there were still ragged bushes and large weeds. I wrote a formal complaint letter objecting to the lack of written estimates, communication, timeliness, quality. I told them I felt they had taken advantage of me and requested a detailed invoice to justify the $500 or to refund an appropriate amount. I received one voicemail that offered no explanation or response, just a request for me to call them back. I gave up at that point - I did not pursue if further, because I felt it was a waste of my time and would only result in more promises that were not met.
Description of Work: Services were supposed to be spring clean-up, mulching, fertilizing, bush and roses trimming, plus recommendations for additional plantings and periodic returns during the summer to weed and treat plantings as necessary. Request was made by me to start with a specific written scope of work and cost estimate.

I paid for an extra two hours of the work, just for them to get through what they could for that price. It was hugely over estimated for just basic clean-up around my yard. They were slow.

+ -1 moreI bought a Deal from Angie's List for miscellaneous lawn services (about half the regular price). I didn't realize Mulberry was located in Maryland (I live in Virginia) when I purchased the Deal but Mr.Gibbs was able to arrange it so that they could come to Virginia to perform leaf pick-up services. We provided the bags and our trash service picks up bagged leaves so we only needed Mulberry to bag leaves. They completed nearly all of the yard in the hours allocated per the Deal, the remainder not raked and bagged was very minor so we did not request them to complete the task (for an additional fee) and just raked them up ourselves. Overall,Mr. Gibbs and his team was very responsive and understanding and I appreciate that he extended his regular service area to include Northern Virginia. Note that I put that I would not use Mulberry again but only due to the fact that we are outside of their regular service area. If we lived within their service area we would consider them for future jobs.

+ -1 moreI purchased an Angie's List Big Deal that included "hauling" in the title and the description of the deal: "$199 for Post-Sandy Lawn Cleanup, General Hauling, & Leaf Removal." When I spoke to the owner about scheduling service, he said hauling would be an extra $200. This would have doubled the price and would not have been a deal at all. When I asked him why the Big Deal said it included hauling, he said he didn't know but that hauling was specifically not included. When I contacted Angie's List about this, they promptly refunded my money for the Big Deal and said they would contact the contractor. I have not heard any follow up so I do not know if he is still using the misleading ad.
Description of Work: No work was performed because the Big Deal I purchased was misleading.

+ -1 moreThe actual work performed was adequate but not of high enough quality that I would use the company again. The initial contact was not great as the owner lost our phone # and I had to call to find out why they weren't there at the scheduled time/date. We had to re-schedule and on the new date, the work crew showed up but the owner did not make an appearance until a week later when he showed up without calling. The work itself was adequate although the weeded area was largely left with all the roots intact which means it will need doing again. The crew did not bring bags for the debris so I had to supply some but did not have enough and there was no effort to go and get more, instead the debris that could not be bagged was left at the curb. I found the whole experience underwhelming and lacking in professionalism.

My only real complaint is that once they got here they stated that we had more work than they could finish in the allotted time and that we should purchase another deal, or just pay them more at their regular rate to finish everything. I declined and just told them to do what they could, which ended up being everything, so I guess I didn't need to spend more money after all. And it all looked great, so I don't think they had to rush through anything to get it done.
Description of Work: They mowed the lawn and removed the clippings, trimmed the bushes, and edged the walkway.
