I rarely take the time to write a bad review, but I feel compelled to do that here. If you're looking for quality work on schedule and on budget from a contractor with integrity and accountability for their work, this is NOT the company for you. The work Robert and his team completed for me had serious issues and each time I followed up, my concerns went either discounted, completely unaddressed or were actually blamed on me and my family. As an example, they did a built-in shower shelf at the wrong angle that cannot hold a single shampoo bottle (or anything else) because the slant is too steep. When I pointed this out to Robert, I was told that he wasn't seeing the issue - yet the shelf is not usable as they built it. In one of the more ridiculous exchanges, Robert claimed that me and my two small children cracked a brand-new toilet tank his team had installed in our remodeled bathroom instead of admitting that it had been damaged (likely dropped given the extent of the damage) during installation. The tank had a giant crack running down the side that was slowly leaking water and we noticed this after it was installed. They also disclaimed any accountability for work done to masonry on our back patio that just a few months later started growing moss between the stones because they hadn't been properly attached to the surface. This was tens of thousands of dollars for sloppy work with significant issues that would take thousands more to fix - but the reason I'm taking the time to write this review is that this team clearly has zero integrity or accountability for the work they do because they've denied any responsibility for each of these major issues and quite aggressively accused us for some of them. If you need a contractor, I urge you to keep looking.

We did not have any work done. This review is not about how well they completed the work. It is about their professionalism. Our project was something that needed to be completed after a previous contractor did not complete the job. I understand that is not always a desirable position for a new contractor to come into. However, if that is the case then tell me right away. I’m fine with that. But don’t keep me hanging and thinking that I’m going to get an estimate yet there never was one drafted. That is what I got while working with John who came to our home to do an estimate. John first told me to expect an estimate at a particular time. It didn’t come at that time and I followed up. Then he gave me a second time and I said ok. It didn’t come at that time and I followed up, again. Unfortunately in order for me to find out that they were not interested in taking the job (unless charging $200/hr for something that will take weeks to complete) I had to reach out to John through email and by phone to get any kind of an answer. He was not proactive at all, which is actually the frustrating part. Like I said, if you’re not interested, tell me. Don’t waste my time.
Description of Work: We needed work completed on our first floor renovation. Drywall, painting, trim work, tile installation and a few other installations of finishes.

Excellent. The project started before Thanksgiving and finished up in late January. Workers were conscientious and did a wonderful job. Brian checked in regularly to make sure i was happy with the job throughout the rennovation. I have used Matthews Construction and Design for several large (and small) projects and have been consistenly pleased with the quality and price of the work.
Description of Work: Complete renovation of screened in backporch. Added new windows, new flooring, replaced french doors, and added new doors. Added electric baseboard heat and ceiling fans.

John gave us an estimate and suggested an architect which we did use but one window will have to be shortened or raised higher first so as not to hinder the project and meet county code standard. He suggested an option of Bilco doors but custom size needed was not available from Bilco even with extensions. No work has been done yet as we decided to wait until the Spring of 2017. Very nice guy with a sense of humor and good references from former jobs and the architect.
Description of Work: Needed an estimate for project to enclose outdoor rear basement stairwell to keep out the rain, snow and leaves. Prefer white vinyl siding with 8" brick base and slanted/sloped shingle roof with a front door. Do not want an awning or screened- in enclosure even though it would be cheaper according to estimates from other contractors.

Description of Work: The general contractor is a very nice man. His carpenter and painter did excellent work. But the carpenter disappeared after 3/4 of the job. His replacement was not as good. The electrician did subpar work. Often, wrong parts were ordered (more than once) and it took a long time to get the right parts. The plumber did very good work. It was difficult to get the general contractor to respond to incomplete work. Some work has not been done after a year. If the contractor had been more responsive to customer concerns, I would rate him very good to excellent.

They did an extremely good job at a very reasonable fee. Some of their delays were not their fault. Their follow up was good and they consulted me with the job to make sure it was what I wanted.

From start to finish--John and Peggy take care of the customer and are so very patient. I ask a lot of questions and they always took the time to help me understand things. The price can't be beat for the high quality work they do. Working with John and his team was the best decision we made.
Description of Work: Two years ago we had John and his team remodel our sunroom and bathroom--the work was breathtaking. We loved how practical he was and his attitude made the process fun! We recently reached out about a smaller project and John and Peggy got back to us right away with the help we needed (even after two years they still knew everything about our style and house).

We had the pleasure of working with Robert Matthews for our project. Our house is 60 years old and has been in our family for over 40 years. Our first impression of Robert was very positive, and stayed that way throughout the whole process. He's not only extremely knowledgeable about his business, he is a really nice guy, and very easy to work with. He spoke very highly of his crew and with good reason. They were courteous and professional. The costs were presented to us in the beginning and our final cost actually ended up being $1,000 lower than our and quot;not to exceedand quot; amount. I would highly recommend Matthews General Contracting, Inc.
Description of Work: Remove rotten/damaged exterior trim on identified areas of overhangs of house. Replace 2 exterior out-swing doors Jack up sagging areas to straighten out appearance of overhangs, install structural, paint grade “microlam beams” to support failing areas, re-trim to match existing. Prepare and paint all exterior trim, paint to match existing color unless otherwise instructed.

I don't typically take the time to write reviews, but had to make an exception to share our experience with Robert at Matthews General Contracting. Over the last five years, we have undertaken significant remodeling projects. They have all taken longer than expected, cost more than quoted, and have been generally unpleasant experiences. Not with Robert. He met me the day after I called him - on a Friday - and began construction the following Monday. His crews were all professional, respectful of our home, and did excellent work. Particularly his floor guys! There was only one issue during the project, which Robert quickly fixed. He made certain that the work was done on time, his prices were as quoted and were fair. He was consistently responsive, and generally great to work with. We will use Robert and Matthews General Contracting for all of our future contracting needs.
Description of Work: Removed built-ins, dry-walled two rooms, painted large living room, hall and bedroom, inserted window, re-wired electricity in two rooms, crown moulding in bedroom, refinished hardwood floors upstairs, stained hardwood in living and dining rooms, put new hardwoods in family room.

I called to schedule an estimate. Robert answered the phone and answered as if a personal call, didn't say name of company. That was a little odd. I told him the basics of what I needed. He asked if he could see the insurance company report. I hesitated with my response. All my research on how to go through this process has said do not share insurance report with contractor. I told him and quot;everyone I've spoken to who is not a contractor says don't share the reportand quot; He said and quot;ummm, well you can share it without the numbers so we can get a good idea of the scope of work.and quot; I thought that sounded reasonable and said okay. I was going to say, okay I can do that and he quickly responded and quot;you know what, you sound way too nervous to be going through this, this doesn't sound like something we want to deal with.and quot; And then hung up on me. Yes, excuse me, I'm about to spend upwards of $40,000 for a home repair from a recent storm. Yes, I'm a little nervous. I'm glad this did not work out, even for an estimate. I am a very calm, laid-back person and I certainly do not need someone with such a short temper around me or working on my house.

Response from Matthews General Contracting Inc
Maybe the biggest problem with angie's list is when consumers pit contractors with good ratings against one another. We are in Maryland where a month ago a large wind storm caused extensive damage to our area. Insurance adjusters were coming in from as far away as Texas to help with the claims. The way this works is the adjuster go over the house to determine the extent of damage, then makes a list of repairs and the amount that the insurance company will pay for the repairs. This is helpful for everyone, because it outlines what will be paid, making the process go faster so repairs can be started. The amount the insurance companys pay is certainly not reflective of what most contractors will charge, so it is up to the contractor to decide if he or she wants the work enough to settle for what will be paid. Since the storm of 6/29/12 we have been contacted 20+ for such work, don't get me wrong, we appreciate every contact, it just sometime you have to know when to say no. I apoloigze for being short, and will work on my phone manners

We had 4 companies come and meet with us to talk about the work. John was the most sincere and knowledgeable about construction. He didn't try and sell us on and quot;designand quot; consulting or anything we didn't need or want--he listened to our needs and then told us how it could be done. The work was done above and beyond our expectations--our bathroom is truly amazing (and affordable). The team he works with (Peggy) is very responsive and updated on the project so they can answer questions. I really felt comfortable working with John and Peggy--the quality of work and price are unbeatable. We will use them again if we do anymore renovations.

The friend who recommended the Matthews Company just gushed about their work and they way they treated her. After meeting Robert, John and Peggy, we had to agree about their professional manner. They are very friendly, easy to talk to, responsive and considerate. From the first meeting to the last, we were treated as respected clients. In previous experiences with contractors, delays seemed to be part of the game. Work begins on your project, and then everyone leaves and works somewhere else for a few days. Then back to you. This did not happen with the Matthews Company. Even when they were juggling several projects, they made sure work continued on ours. The Matthews family really went out of their way to accommodate our needs. They made sure their work space was clean before leaving, and they arranged the construction materials so there were always walk spaces in our small yard. On one occasion, we organized a family get-together with very little lead time. The company that hauled away building debris could not come in time to remove a considerable pile in the back yard. To help us, Peggy rounded up help from somewhere and lugged the stuff away in a company pick up truck. The party went fine, thanks to her responsiveness. When the work was completed, Robert walked my wife and me through the rooms, making sure everything was as we wanted it. He made sure we understood that they wanted us to be satisfied with their work. We were. We are. Throughout the six months or so of the project, the Matthews family remained professional, courteous, considerate, and accommodating. They did fine work, treating us like valued clients, and, more importantly for us, like friends. I recommend them to you enthusiastically.
Description of Work: We had a deck on the back of our house, which had become unusable due to the mosquito invasion of recent years. Together with an architect, the Matthews team, my wife and I created a plan to remove the deck and build a two-story addition on the back. Work was delayed for about three months while we tried and tried to get the required permits. Finally, the DC Govt. came through. Once we had the paper, the Matthews brothers (John and Robert) and sister (Peggy, who runs the office, but also visited our project several times) and their team got to work. They quickly removed the deck and put up new exterior walls and a south-facing roof to accommodate solar panels. When they were ready to remove interior walls, they put up a wall made of heavy plastic sheathing, which kept the dust, dirt and debris out of the rest of the house. They worked quickly, professionally, and in a very friendly manner. Each member of their team was pleasant, respectful, polite, considerate, and skilled. Robert and/or John visited our site almost every day. They made a point of seeing us each time, discussing progress, inviting suggestions and questions, and of taking our ideas into careful consideration in the construction. They always seemed willing to discuss and make minor changes to the plan, prior to actually doing the work, so that everyone benefitted from new ideas as they emerged during the construction process (Conduit for the solar panel wiring was put in the walls, and trim was added to cover speaker wires, for example.) . In addition to face-to-face communication, we were also in contact via cell phone and e-mail. If we had a question or a concern or an idea, we would call Robert or John. They almost always answered right away, or called us back the same day. I don't remember a time during the six months or so that they worked for us, that Robert, John or Peggy did not respond to our request within 24 hours. They were responsive, considerate, and very pleasant throughout. Our project was fairly complex. It entailed the construction of two large rooms, two full bathrooms (one large enough to accommodate a stackable washer/dryer,) two small screened-in porches, closets, oak floors, in-wall air conditioners, and repairs to some damaged wood in a porch roof and another exterior wall. Things went so well that we asked them to replace the counter tops and floor in the kitchen, too. The additional work cost extra, of course, but was well worth the expense. The Matthews Company did a good job of keeping the project moving, and of staying on budget. We know that every construction project takes longer than planned, and costs more than expected. We had banked extra money, just in case. Happily, we still had money in the bank when the project was completed. They kept the costs close to their estimates. We have had the pleasure of entertaining friends and family in our new family room. Relatives and guests alike comment on the quality of the work done, and the attractiveness of the room. The rooms are air tight, saving energy, and the finishing carpentry is very well done. It's a joy to walk through the rooms looking at how well everything just fits together. We think the work is first class, and our guests agree.

Matthews General Contracting IncI first attempted to contact Matthews General Contracting Incvia the email. After one week of no response, I called them, I understand emails are hard to miss, even if you are trying to find new business for your company. On the phone they were very positive about talking with us about our plans, and made an appointment to meet the following Tuesday morning. After waiting at home for ~2 hours, I called the company. They reported the person who was to meet with me was sick, and asked to reschedule for the following day. This I understood, people get sick, but a courtesy call would have been appreciated. They rescheduled for the next day. The following day, again, I waited for ~ 2hours before giving up and moving on. No follow up calls, no emails from them have arrived. They've wasted my time, they've been very unprofessional. I'm disappointed given the strong reports for this company I found on the list.
Description of Work: I am looking for a contractor to give me some preliminary information with the eye toward making an addition to our house. At this point, we have several questions about the general process, approximate costs, etc. I attempted to contact Matthews General Contracting to get some of this information based on their strong ratings here on Angie's List. After two missed appointments by them, I've given up and must report their response to my queries as unprofessional.

To all concerned, what happened here was an unfortunate comedy of errors. The first day I had the wrong address and banged on the door for a half of an hour to no avail. On the second day I went to the same address figuring we simply missed each other, I had left my cell phone at the office so I couldn't call anyone so I sat there for another half hour again, and it wasn't until the next day that I found out I had the wrong address and literally was sitting across the street. The potential job was a 40 minute trip from my office which I definately wouldn't have done twice if I had known better. I am sorry for any inconvieniences I may have caused. Thank you, John

Robert Mathews was our contact on all this. He was very responsive and helpful. He came highly recommended, and everything we have seen confirms this. We will definitely be consulting with him and the company as we continue to work on the house.
Description of Work: This was for a bid to completely move our staircase, putting it in a different place, over the stairs to the basement. Our house is not organized in the most rational way, and this would help. We have not done this yet, because we are waiting to finish a few other things, but when we do we will almost certainly use Matthews GC for this.

***EXCELLENT SERVICE AND QUALITY OF WORK*** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I used Matthews General Contracting to build a dormer over a second-floor bathroom in a 1950's Cape Cod in Rockville. The job required removing the old roof, building a new one (gabled dormer), and installing new plumbing/electrical. Total project cost was $13,000, took about 3 weeks start to finish (new roof was waterproof within 2 days of starting project). This is a family-owned, local small business run by brothers John and Rob with their sister Peggy. They kept me well-informed throughout the project, offered lots of helpful advice on design, assisted in dealing with Rockville Permits, and were flexible in working with my schedule for meetings. Matthews came in about $5,000 cheaper than another estimate I got for the project. They set me up with a draftsman - Trent Godhard - to complete required drawings for permitting. Trent provided a good product at a good price.Turnaround was ~2-3 weeks. Quality of work could not have been better. Their carpenters are true craftsman. They sub-contract with a plumber and electrician who also get high marks for the quality of their work. I changed the scope of the project several times as it evolved - I was probably not the best customer to work with. Matthews always adjusted to what I wanted and gave me fair prices to make changes along the way.I originally planned to only have Matthews do structural work, but eventually used them to finish plumbing, electrical, and drywall. They did make two mistakes. First, the project failed its initial plumbing inspection; however, the required changes were RIDICULOUS and I am still unconvinved that Matthews did anything wrong. They made corrects at no extra cost. Second, while moving a vent pipe after the inspection, they forgot to install flashing around the vent pipe before leaving for the day. It rained that night and I got some water in the upstairs. They cleaned up the mess and offered to repair any damage (there was none). My overall experience was very positive and I will be using them for any future construction projects I have.
