I was extremely pleased when I called Piers and he returned my call the same day. He convinced me that my fan was a better quality than the current fans that are not produced in the U.S. and was worth repairing. I made an appointment for a few days later. Piers is very knowledgeable and explains what he is doing with great detail. I appreciate this type of interaction. He did the installation in less that an hour, was very professional, pleasant, and competent. I was also impressed that he is very careful with the area in which he working and covers everything to prevent any problems. I wish I could find more skilled craftsmen such as Piers. He is also a master electrician, so he understands every aspect of the fan's functions. The following day, I was having some difficulty with the functioning of the control. I suspected it was my fault, but decided to call to confirm. Piers explained what I was probably doing incorrectly, but said he wanted to come out and check it to make sure. He came today and explained exactly what I was doing wrong. He is very patient and eager to please. On his first visit, we discussed an issue with another fan in my home. It required a part that was no longer in production. Piers brought that part to me today--and refused any payment. I have never had this occur in all of my years of home repair.!!!!!! :)
Description of Work: My 20+ year old Casa Blanca fan was no longer working properly. It needed a new control and Motherboard. The old control has been discontinued.

The service was top notch. Fan Man LLC is an authorized Casablanca service company, so the techs are extremely knowledgable about all things Casablanca. The company is also experienced with other brands of ceiling fans. In addition to expertly replacing the motor in our Casablanca fan, he made a number of recommendations for maintaining all of our ceiling fans. The tech was patient with our questions and provided clear explanations of the work performed. We were quite impressed and absolutely and unhesitatingly recommend Fan Man LLC for fan or lighting repairs.
Description of Work: Our old Casablanca fan was making a mysterious noise. The Fan Man tech determined that we needed a new motor and that the motor was still covered by the warranty 25 years after purchase. He replaced the motor, all the while explaining what he was doing, and made a number of recommendations for keeping the fan in good working order. While he was here, he evaluatd our four other ceiling fans and made a couple of minor repairs.

Piers is a fantastic workman. My old Casablanca fan was not working properly. He was punctual. Reviewed the situation and recommended first replacing only the wall switch with a more recent version he had to see if it worked well with the old circuit board in the fan and solved the problem. Although it worked initially, it was apparent it was not going to work properly over the long haul. Piers came back within days and replaced the wall switch and circuit board with new, updated versions. In the end the total price was not more than what he would have charged if he went ahead replacing everything the first time. I appreciated his effort to keep my cost down by trying a wall switch solution first and not charging me for a return trip, since I had agreed to try the more cautious, less costly, approach. Piers knows the business of fans, particularly Casablanca and older models. He is personable and a good conversationalist. I really appreciated hearing all of his recommendations on the fan. I would not hesitate in using him again in the future and highly recommend him to others.

Excellent. The Fan Man did work on Saturdays, was sensitive to my work schedule, had deep electrical expertise and immediately solved the problem. He also had to travel to Virginia from Maryland. He was neat, explained to me the problem, and he fixed it.

Piers was fantastic. He was kind enough to schedule an early time in the day as it was convenient for everyone, re-hung and fixed the remote on one fan (and provided tips on how to reprogram as I had failed to do so earlier), and came up with an innovative solution using rubber bands to fix humming on a second fan (the humming was being caused by the shape vibrating rather than the motor). He was also very helpful when asked about what fans to get in the future and clearly knows his fans extremely well. Would recommend him wholeheartedly and will definitely be using him again in the future.

Vic was prompt and courteous. He evaluated my fan and said that the circuit board most likely was the victim of a power surge which fried the board. He went up to my vaulted ceiling to took everything apart to check and gave me the opportunity to clean the blades and light fixtures. Approximately 45 minutes everything was in great working order. He explained how the features worked and we tested everything. Very patient and thorough. Will use this service again and highly recommend.

Piers and Vic (Fan Man L.L.C.) are EXCELLENT. We would have had both fans serviced earlier but we are located outside their service area and Casablanca has no other service representatives nearer to our home. When Piers called to tell me he had a request for service nearer to our home we were delighted. We scheduled an appointment to have Vic travel the additional hour or so to help us. We are extremely pleased with Vic and the repairs he made. My wife is especially pleased because the bad bearing in the bedroom was a frustration to her as we run the fan every night and she wore ear plugs to silence the annoying noise. Unfortunately (or fortunately for me), my hearing is not as sharp so, I never heard the problem after making numerous attempts to correct the issue. She was ecstatic when Vic heard the bearing noise and even more so yesterday after he replaced the motor and the bearing noise was gone. I found Vic to be personable, professional and very thorough in his repairs. My conversations with Piers have always been professional, helpful and I found him to be personable. If you have a Casablanca fan to be installed or repaired and you are within their service area, The Fan Man (Piers & Vic) are the people to contact.
Description of Work: Vic returned yesterday to replace a motor in our bedroom Casablanca fan that had a bad bearing. He was also here about a month earlier to repair a fan hung from a 19' ceiling with a scraping noise due to the flywheel that continued to drop after several repair attempts failed following conversations with Piers attempting to help me repair the issue.

I called and told him that my fan had stopped working and he asked a couple of questions and said it was probably switch and also perhaps the control panel. He gave me the price for switch and for both. He said they were having some trouble getting the parts from Casablanca, but would keep me informed. He called a few days later and said that Casablanca still did not have the parts and then several days (maybe a week) after that called me again and said he had gotten the parts and could he come the next day. He had gone to another vendor to get the parts because Casablanca still did not have them (he had a lot of customers waiting). He came, calling first as I had requested, and was even early, which was fine with me. It took a little over an hour and my fan works again.

If all contractors were like the Fan Man (Piers Hackley), there would be no need for Angie's List because all contractors would then be exceptional, friendly, kind professionals who work quickly at a fair price .... and like your dogs, too! I first learned about the Fan Man from customer service at Casablanca Fan Company. Then I checked Angie's List to be sure I wanted to hire this company/person. After reading the reviews, I knew I would be in great "fan hands" .... and I was! I originally called because the remote that is the only way to turn my 15+ yr old Casablanca master bedroom fan (and its lights) on/off just stopped working. I also mentioned I had an even older fan (also Casablanca) that never had proper speed control via the wall control. Piers started with the master bedroom fan. Actually that is not true. He started by getting on the floor and playing with one of my dogs (my 15 yr old cancer-survivor who loves being in the middle of things). My other dogs were outside or he would have played with them, too. We talked about the work he and his wife have done over the years with dog rescue. Then Piers started on fixing my fan. He immediately knew what was wrong and how to fix it -- and had the parts with him. I had been told by the manufacturer that I would need to replace the remote and the receiver since they no longer sold my old one. Piers said that was not necessary. He could program the new remote to work with my old receiver, saving me money. And he did. While looking at the fan to make the repair, he noticed that it had been poorly installed (which was no surprise to me ... I was never comfortable with the original installation and had that electrician return to make it better .... but even after that second time, it was still more wobbly than I thought it should be.) Not only did Piers tell me that the entire fan was too wobbly, but he found one blade was very close to flying off. He also showed me that the installer used five weights to balance the blades, and told me that rarely is more than one weight ever needed. It was just more proof that the original installation was done poorly. Piers took the entire fan down, which allowed me to thoroughly clean it and get it looking brand new again (hard to do while installed on a cathedral ceiling). Piers cleaned one portion while I cleaned the other. Then he put it all back together, tested it to be sure that all functions of the new remote worked properly, and made sure my fan no longer wobbled. Now I no longer worry that it might fall on me .... plus it is now totally quiet when it always used to make some noise when on .... especially when on "high". Then Piers looked at the problem with the 20+ year old family room fan. He instantly knew the problem, fixed it in seconds and told me to just let it run for 24 hours. It was a pleasure meeting Piers. It truly is a joy to meet such a consummate professional. Thank you, Piers!
Description of Work: Fixed Casablanca fan remote after it suddenly stopped working. While here he saw how poorly the fan had originally been installed (I always worried that it might fall on my head one night while sleeping). I also asked him to check out a Casablanca fan that came with the house in 1995 and the wall control never had proper speed control (only ranged from very slow to medium/slow).

I found Fan Man (Piers Hackley) not on Angie's List, but after a Google search for Casablanca repair. Only after did I find the business listed on Angie's with all 'A' reviews. I quickly learned a lot about Casablanca fans and tried to repair the fan with a switch replacement that seemed to be a common complaint. Did not fix. I called Piers and explained what I'd done and asked his opinion. He told me in no uncertain terms exactly what the issue was with my specific fan and that there were 2 fix options (high-cost / lower-cost) using essentially the same part. I explained that I'd be happy to bring the fan to him for repair rather than his making a house call. He was happy to take in the work and said that once I got there if I could wait an hour he could repair it and hand it back to me rather than make 2 trips. He was very welcoming (introduced me to his dog... very friendly, we got along great). He explained that the original Stealth board was no longer available but was replaced with an upgraded board and switch (higher cost). And in the case of the lower cost option a less expensive Casablanca circuit board (same board, different application) was 'modified' to fit (as a near exact replacement) and replaced the burned out circuit board as though it were designed to do so. I not only saved the cost of a service call but Piers said I could pay for the exact upgraded board, or the less expensive 'modded' board, my option, but he could see no reason for the added expense. When was the last time you had technician do that for you? And it didn't take an hour. With visiting, talking about our kids, getting to know the dog, it still only took about 20 minutes and he talked me through every step he took. Then took the time to explain the details of the new 4-button programmable switch. He also gave me a quick installation review to make sure I wouldn't kill myself on re-installation (jokingly, I'm semi-competent, and it's a very simple install). We laughed that it took longer to drive to his shop that it did to have the repair done. He did a quick light and fan check and sent me on my way. He did advise me to be watchful for a future issue on my particular fan and when that started, to give him another call. I will gladly. Casablanca fans aren't cheap. This one came with my house. And only after finding out what they cost (and cost to repair) did I research having an expert do the work. Glad I did. And if you have a Casablanca that needs any kind of work do yourself a favor and contact Piers.

Piers is a fastidious professional. He knows Casablanca fans and is an able representative for the company. He has all the proper tools and parts. He wears booties, spreads drop cloths and is otherwise careful about protecting the household environment. He is dog-friendly. A more knowledgeable and expert fan technician one could not find.
Description of Work: Piers serviced an old but nice Casablanca fan. Despite the fan's age he was able to replace the switch with one he had on his truck. He also inspected the fan for safety and performance. He adjusted the spacing of the light fixture and fixed a wobble so the fan is more stable and makes less noise. He advised us to keep the fan running on high for a while in order to promote smoother bearing wear and perhaps less noise. He advised on the proper bulbs.

He arrived on time, was exceptionally graceful, took me through the entire process step by step. The problem was in the computer electronics of the fan. Watching him work was a pleasure, it was clear that he knew what he was doing. In about an hour and a half he was done, he cleaned up everything and made it look like he was never here. He explained what I was to do when I had a power outage to reset the light/fan so there would be no need to call him. When he left I felt like I had known him for a long time. All I can say is that he is a professional and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anybody.
Description of Work: My Casablanca light/fan in the kitchen suddenly just stopped working. My call to Mr. Hackley was refreshing. He told me what he thought the problem was and that he would take the time to make sure he was right before he would proceed. He fixed my light/fan in record time.

M Hackney may be the best service person I've ever used (I'm 81 years old and have contracted many service personnel.) He was expert analyzing the problem and correcting the failure of the fan. But most importantly were his relationship skills. He confirmed by phone all appointments and the one snow delay that occurred. He is quite personable. I only wish he was trained in other areas of home repair which I'm sure I'll need before the fan malfunctions again.

Arrived on-time. Clean, courteous and friendly. Handed me a card, hook my hand and got to work. He was very tidy in the work area, laying down a tarp under the ladder and working on the tarp. He explained the details of the repair while he worked and added information about the the reliability of these models as well as some helpful tips for keeping it humming along. He finished up fast. We paid the tab, shook hands and he was out the door. We are quite happy with the service and would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Response from Fan Man LLC
This reveiw gave me my first grade below an a. How in the world can I get anything less than an A for helping someone out over the phone which took a great deal of patience and understanding considering miss. (member name removed) is disabled. I did not charge Miss. (member name removed) a dime and saved her a minimum of $95. I take great pride in helping clients out over the phone when possible to save them money, I guess I have to rethink my generousity. I am truely sad about this response.

We have a 26+ year old Casablanca fan which we paid a top price for (Brass and Copper finish, suspended from a 15' cathedral ceiling). Over the years the Intellitouch control unit began to operate intermittently, then not at all. I called the Fan Man and got an appointment the next day. Vic called and said he was running ahead of schedule and could he come early. He was here in 20 minutes and promptly went to work. He replaced the old, out of production Intellitouch wall control and circuit board in the fan which had failed due to previous power surges. He also cleaned all the components and tightened the flywheel before reassembling the unit. In all the repair took about an hour and 20 minutes, and the fan runs beautifully now. A second 20+ year old fan had broken pull switches and the switch control circuit had failed (mostly likely again due to power surges. He replaced all the faulty parts and again this fan works great. I would not hesitate to call Vic at the Fan Man for any future ceiling fan repair work. Excellent service at a very reasonable price for the work performed. I wish all service providers were as responsive and affordable as the Fan Man.

The Fan Man replaced the electrical parts that had worn out both on the fan and on the wall control panel. We were so happy we did not have to replace the fan with a new one, as our fan was so perfect for the room and it would have been tipple the cost to do so. He came on time found the problem and repaired everything in a timely manner. We consider ourselves lucky to have had him referred to us by Annapolis Lighting. He's a "fan whisperer".

HE's awesome -- instead of spending the time on trying different pull chain circuits and wiring combinations, he suggested eliminating the pull chain completely, and going with a 4 SPEED KNOB (by Casablanca) at the light switch! WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!! Now we never have get on our tippy toes for the pull chain in the middle of our vaulted-celing. Also, the fan was wobbly as heck in its base -- not anymore. Solid as a rock. He also tightened every blad and the housing on the other two fans. Total charge was $155 -- the switch itself is $47 retail (go ahead and look it up!). He only charged me for the service call and the know. Piers -- you're awesome.
Description of Work: Wow. Wow. WOW! He lives up to the Fan Man title big time. Piers is just terrific in every way. Called several weeks ago asking about "which 3 speed pull chain circuit I needed" for my Hunter fan. He spent 15 minutes on the phone with me -- for free without ever hearing from me before -- and walked me through each and every step I needed to take to change the circuit. But he warned -- quite correctly -- that Hunter fans are impossible to match on circuits. After several hours over several days of me trying to be Mr. Fix It, I called Piers to set an appointment for him to "fix" my now only 2 speed fan, and inspect 2 other fans for tightening/service.

Fan Man LLC provided terrific service and , understandable information about what caused the issues on these two fans. Replaced the motor in the upstairs fan. The fan was 24 years old and yet the motor replacement was covered by the warranty. On the dining room fan showed me how power surges over the years have worn down the surge protectors built into the fan. The recommended fix was an RF board and wall controller which will reduce the impact of power surges to the new board.

This is a great company. Piers responded immediately to my query, and accommodated my request to get the job done quickly. He was clear, concise, professional and friendly. Vic came by to do the installation and the job was professional from beginning to end. My old fan was old and Vic took the extra care to tape the wires properly, and insure that the safety issues were addressed at every step. It was not an easy job and he was able to troubleshoot and get the job done. I could not be any happier with this company and I will certainly use them again.
