Description of Work: One bathroom is fine. The other is not. They did not use the materials I had purchased. I was asked to use a substitute but the color was not satisfactory. I had things taken from my home even after I had given items to them that I was going to throw away. I was told by the owner that he would have the workers stain the decorative tile around the bathroom to make things right. That will not solve the problem. In addition, I had to have grass seeded in my yard because the workers used the grass for a pathway to get to their truck instead of walking a few steps to the walkway. There was also an issue on the cost of my tile and flooring the with the amount used. I was charged an extra $1700 for tile for two small bathrooms. I never saw the bill from the tile company. In short, I feel I was cheated and will never use this company again.

Response from American Bath Remodel, LLC
As advertised, I have been doing bathroom remodeling exclusively for the past 26 years, servicing all of Montgomery County and parts of Prince George’s and Howard County only. I have always done all of my own estimates and contracts to be as thorough and clear with the customer as possible. I also have the highest paid and what I feel are the most experienced installers in the business. This recipe is responsible for what I believe has given my company the best reputation in our field in the metropolitan area. Let me first preface my response with a personal comment: this particular customer was an absolute pleasure for me to deal with and my installers Jasen and Matt for the first two weeks of a three week project. Unfortunately what was told to me by this customer is she had recently lost her husband and was now in the process of totally remodeling her entire house. Our job involved remodeling two bathrooms and as of two weeks on the job we had completed the first, started on the second and Jasen had commented more than once this customer was great to work for. As she has acknowledged, she had given him items from her home and in addition an old Jeep that did not run which she was planning on donating. After the second week on the job while Jasen was there, her brother stopped in and apparently had a major issue with the money she was spending. There was an immediate change in her personality and attitude from that point on. Case in point, this customer spent over $6,500 on her toilet cost alone. After that point, I was involved with several conversations with this customer. It became clear to me then that this customer was also showing the classic signs that I have unfortunately and intimately experienced with a past family member and currently my mother. She would make allegations to my office and when I contacted her she would not recall the incident or denied it happened. After offering Jasen the Jeep he brought in a trailer and towed it home. Several days later she accused him of theft. When contacting her to resolve the matter it was no longer an issue. She also told Steve, my son that runs our office, Jasen was doing side work in her home. When I contacted her about this she denied it. All that being said if she is missing things from her home it is the first we have heard of it, as mentioned she has had many companies and crews in her home before, during, and I assume after we had completed our work. If she actually feels items were taken from her home I would recommend contacting the police in addition to just Angie’s List. Jasen has been with me over 8 years and has had approx. 8 years remodeling bathrooms exclusively for one of the largest bathroom remodeling companies in the area. She commented with me while contracting I was actually half the cost of the estimate she received from this larger company I referenced above, but yet gives me a “D” for price. As she noted in her comments, she had purchased some fixtures of her own, yet we chose to substitute with other products. This makes no sense. Our business and advertisement is built around giving our customers the option to purchase their own fixtures from the venue of their choice. We provide the specifications and also pick the fixtures up as a courtesy. Regarding the grout, we don’t just randomly use the grout of our choice. The customer selected one of the standard grout colors Jasen carries, but her choices are unlimited. In regards to her comment about the yard damage, we work in the bathrooms not the yard. As mentioned, she was having the entire home, inside and out remodeled. I believe when I first showed up, her roof had just been renovated and she was having the complete house painted so I would assume the exterior companies and crews may have had a little more to do with the yard than our bathroom remodeling crew. We remove all debris from the premises as we tear it out. We do not put it in the yard. Regarding the tile cost overage, in our estimate we clearly state a square footage allowance for the tile. This is agreed on by the homeowner and me. The customer selects the tile of their choice. We let the customer know in writing, for their acceptance, if there is any difference in cost for their tile before purchasing and picking up the tile. This was done like always and we have her signature of acceptance for the tile cost difference. Her tile was $1797 over the allowance, which is extreme but it goes hand in hand with the $6500 toilet she bought. The customer walked the final job in detail with Jasen, signed that she was happy and satisfied, and we have multiple pictures of her with Jasen full of smiles. We also have numerous after pictures of each bathroom, however Angie’s List will not allow us to attach pictures to our response to her review. I have just heard from Jasen’s current customer and she should be posting a very extensive review within the next day or two. Her father does custom home building in Connecticut and he has been extremely pleased with how we took care of his daughter. Jasen is responsible for a high percentage of our glowing reviews. In closing, I feel for this woman and her family and wish them the best.

American Bath did a fantastic job on our bathroom. We needed a new shower stall and decided to also replace the vanities and fixtures in the bathroom and the dressing area outside it, and have the bathroom repainted. We had four contractors come out and give us estimates (all from Angie’s List), and American Bath was the only one who actually gave us a written estimate (the others each gave us verbal ballpark figure but said they would send it to us in writing; none did). We also chose them because we liked the way they approached the project, but the fact that they followed through on what they told us boded well for the rest of the job. The whole process was very clearly spelled out, with everything specifically itemized. If we wanted changes (or they had to make changes), then they were clear about the additional charges and they were written and signed off on. If I sent emails asking questions, they were answered within a day. I also very much appreciated that they were flexible enough to be able to accommodate us when materials we had ordered online didn’t show up when promised, and to do a little extra work when we discovered that our other bathroom also needed a new vanity and sink. Finally, they did an excellent job. The bathroom looks great, they paid attention to details, they were conscientious about cleaning up afterwards, and the whole thing feels solidly constructed. I would definitely use them again.

Workman somewhat careless, e.g., he was going to leave the corner of the floor under the vanity untiled, saying "Nobody will see it," until I insisted that he tile it. Final results, though not exactly what I wanted, were entirely satisfactory from an esthetic point of view. The contract called for the bathroom to be painted in my choice of color if I provided the paint. However, Ron refused to have the ceiling painted a different color from the walls unless I paid more, so they both wound up beige. I purchased the toilet, the tile, the light fixtures, the medicine cabinet, the vanity, all the faucets and shower head, the vanity counter top and the basin, at a total additional cost to me of $1,462.76. The contract called for American Bath to supply towel racks, but I wound up purchasing them, and Ron rebated $100 to me for this. Shortly after American Bath completed the renovation of my master bathroom, the new toilet began to flush incompletely, requiring more than one flush, and not filling back up appropriately. At times it would back up. At times the quality of the flush seemed related to whether or not the shower in the master bathroom was on. Eventually I called Kroehler, the maker of the toilet, thinking the toilet was to blame for the poor performance. Their customer service dept. told me to have the toilet line snaked and to check the exhaust pipe on the roof for anything interfering with its function. On 8/24/09, a plumber snaked the new toilet, at a cost to me of $164.00. That night, the problem returned. It got progressively worse, involving the shower drain in the master bath. On 10/8/09, another plumber snaked out the master bath toilet, we thought, all the way down the “main branch,” 65 feet, at a cost to me of $618.00. Several days later, the problem was back, including now the toilet in the other bathroom in the upstairs of my house, and the bathtub in that bathroom. The new plumber had recommended a camera investigation of the pipes, and they did this at some point between 10/8 and 10/20, at no cost to me. What they found led them to believe that the only solution was to remove all the drain piping for the 2 bathrooms and replace it, though they were still not sure of the exact nature of the problem. By this time, both my upstairs bathrooms were completely unusable; our only recourse was the powder room on the first floor. On 10/20, at an additional cost to me of $3,000.00, this plumber removed all the drain piping for the two bathrooms and replaced them. In the removed pipes, they found substantial amounts of concrete and grout, apparently sufficient to cause the blockages that we had been experiencing. We have had no further drainage problems.
Description of Work: Completely redid master bath. New appliances, floor and wall tile, and lighting.

Following is a copy of the letter written and dated January 22, 2010 by our company’s owner, Ron Wood, sent to the BBB, which was also forwarded to [member name removed]: “Unfortunately my decision remains the same until [member name removed] or a third party provide any form of documentation or evidence that we created any problem whatsoever. The evidence as far as I am concerned is clear. [member name removed] has an older home with the original plumbing. Nearly six months after completion of our work she had one drain snaked and it was documented to be clear and there was no suggestion of a problem in a second bathroom at the time. After six months from completion of our job she had a drain in a separate bathroom snaked and it was documented to be clear. The only reason for the significant several thousand dollar additional expense she incurred was from her voluntary acceptance to have her plumbing replaced so that she could receive a long term multi-year warranty. The previous drains were clear from basic snaking but no company I am aware of is going to give a long term multi-year warranty on approx. 50 year old plumbing. When plumbing of this age is removed you will find a little of everything that has accumulated over the years. The plumber who removed the plumbing made it very clear to me he wasn’t sure what the debris was in the removed plumbing. As mentioned in my previous letter we were never made privy to any concerns or problems whatsoever for over six months. I have been given no access, no pictures and took it on my own to contact the plumbing company who made it explicitly clear they never in any manner suggested that we created the problem. Again for [member name removed] own satisfaction and my company reputation, I highly recommend arbitration on your part or the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. I will be more than happy to abide by any decision on the Better Business Bureau or MHIC’s part”. February 4, 2010 our company received a letter from the BBB stating, “ ….we have contacted your customer and provided them with your response to their concerns. Please be advised that we have closed the complaint and adjusted it to reflect your timely and reasonable response.” August 19, 2010 [member name removed]received a letter from MHIC that was forwarded to our company stating the following, “Please be advised that after a thorough review of your file, we find no violations of the Maryland Home Improvement Law.” As of 9/24/13, the plumbing company that [member name removed]used for the work, Michael and Sons, have 39 closed complaints for category “problems with Product/Service” under the BBB. American Bath Inc. currently has 0 complaints and an A+ rating under the BBB. The entire situation is very unfortunate, however I have tried to maintain the highest ethical standards over the past 25 years of serving Montgomery and Prince George’s county in the bathroom remodeling business. We consistently have an A+ rating with the BBB, excellent standing with MHIC and you should find this situation to be totally inconsistent to all the other postings from Angie’s List.

Ron came over to discuss the job and what options we had for remodeling and repair of a small 1930's bathroom. I thought he was honest and realistic about what we could achieve. He had pictures of similar bathrooms he had worked on to show us. This included removing and replacing all wall tile, removing and replacing all floor tile, repairing and leveling subfloor, installing an exhaust fan, moving the shower head to a different wall, replacing all lighting, replacing sink and cabinet and faucet, painting walls, trim, and door, replacing toilet, and resurfacing our stainless steel tub. The scheduled start time for the project changed per Ron's request and was delayed starting by approximately 2 weeks which was no big deal to us as we weren't on a strict time schedule. The guys who did the work were friendly and took care to keep the work area as clean as possible. They ran into a snag with venting the exhaust fan but brainstormed a way to address the issue and it was resolved without too much trouble. We are extremely happy with the final product and will use these guys again for our upstairs bathroom.

The company president, Ron, came over to the house to take measurements. We explained all the leaks and problems we had with our old baths, which happen to be located one on top of another (1st floor and basement). There were several leaks between the two bathrooms which had damaged the basement ceiling. We also had in that same area of the basement an outdoor faucet cut-off valve in an unreachable location which we wanted relocated. We also wanted all the bathroom pipes replaced, while everything was uncovered, as we live in an area with the problem of "pinhole leaks." We had some special requests of locating shower heads, shower doors, and medicine cabinets at non-standard heights which was readily accomodated. We also wanted some "grab bars" installed. After receiving the estimate, which was very detailed, we signed the contract and agreed on a start date. We picked out our own tile and vanities from Lowes, and American Bath picked them up and brought them to our house. We chose our fixtures and the smaller items from the specification list Ron provided and had those on hand when the work started. The 3-man team of Jeff, Dave, and Dennis came over on the appointed day and set to work demolishing the 60s-era bathroom and rebuilding it. The first week was mostly taken up with that bath, the second week was the downstairs work. Downstairs the concrete slab had to be excavated to form the shower drain before the new shower could be finished. On both baths, the tile work and the finish work are excellent. Everything drains properly, and works as it should. The team brought with them every kind of tool/apparatus/gadget that you could think of so there was nothing to slow down the work. I am especially happy with the professional fit of the tile (floor and wall) and the precise cornering of the mouldings along the bottom of the wall. They did an excellent job of finishing the drywall and even re-installed the curtain rods when they were finished. There were some minor problems that came up. We didn't mark the vanities so they were installed in the opposite bathrooms at first, but they relocated them the next day. We had bought a medicine cabinet that wasn't the same size as the one we had before so it wasn't as high as we needed, so that had to be re-done at a different height. These setbacks were handled in a professional manner and to our satisfaction. They treated the house and us in a respectul manner throughout, and were available to discuss any concerns. The only complaint we would have about the whole operation is that over the weekend between the two weeks of work some debris was left in the front yard which was unsightly for our neighborhood. (Everything was cleaned up nicely at the end).
Description of Work: We had the complete demolition and upgrade of 2 bathrooms in our house. One of them was a half-bath, which was converted to a full bath. At the same time we had an outdoor faucet replaced and the indoor cut-off valve relocated. We were wanting to do business with a local company that wasn't a chain and that specialized in bathrooms.

The job was completed from start to finish within 7 working days. In fact, the workmen were here only one day. Work included installing the new shower, readjusting the other shower doors to prevent further leaking, and repairing the hole in the drywall as a result of the leak.
Description of Work: Small jobs. Needed a new shower door for an old tile enclosed shower. In another bathroom we had an undiagnosed shower leak causing significant water damage in the adjacent wall. The owner of the company came to our house, helped me pick out an appro-priate shower door at the most reasonable price, and diagnosed the other shower door issue. In addition, we had some problems that were best addressed by other companies he recommended to us, including their telephone numbers. If he didn't know the number, he phoned back to give it to us.I highly recommend this company for professional, fast and reasonably priced service.

I received an estimate--and I think I went over about $300 because I decided to get an entire wall tiled. Ron--the owner is very professional and very punctual. We agreed to a date when I was going to be out of town for the demo--and it was completed in two days. The install was held up because of me--and they worked with my schedule. I think the installation took a total of three days--but it was spread out slightly because of me. The tile work is perfect, they worked with me when I had ideas VERY nicely, they came to my place on time, and they were super nice and easy to work with. There was a small delay because of the shower door ordering--but it was nothing problematic. Very nice people--very easy to work with--they aim to please.
Description of Work: My bathroom had been touched up since the 80s--but the shower wall started to crumble. So I went for a complete redo. New floor tiles, wall tiles, vanity, fixtures, tub and shower.

Very well. Ron came out initially to do the estimate which was accurate. The granite countertop was damaged in delivery which was not their fault delaying everything for a week. The only complaint I would have is that Rob and Bob, the "subcontractors" smelled like smoke, but I don't think they smoked in the house, or else I would have smelled it after they left. All in all - I was very pleased. American Bath is great for someone who wants to save some money, get quality work done and doesn't want to pay extra for designer and the cost for maintaining a showroom
Description of Work: Remodel small master bath - including stall shower, new toilet, new vanity countertop/sink and mirror. Also retiled our guest bath. Ron is the owner and he says he doesn't use subcontractors. Apparently he has 2 teams that work for him, but I don't think they are actually his employees, so in effect they are subcontractors. The team who did our work was Rob and Bob a father and son team. They were professional. Ron doesn't have a showroom and saves you money by allowing you to purchase everything through vendors directly. This worked out well for me, but was a little more stressful as I had to make all the decisions on my own about which tile, countertop etc etc to get. I was lucky that I was happy with all my choices, but if you are not able to deal with all that, it may be wise to spend a bit more money and go with another company that provides a designer. If you are not comfortable being on your own choosing fixtures, countertops etc etc and that your choices will come out looking good together, then this company may not be the best idea.....

As we clarified with the member, my installers are full time employees. I operate with 3 crews. Our smoking policy if applicable, is by their vehicle and all butts are taken with them. I also provide you with a list of professional bathroom showrooms/vendors to give you guidance with your fixture selection. Fixtures are picked up and delivered by our company as a courtesy.

Ron Wood, the president/owner of the company, suggested that a team of three work on the bathroom in order to meet the requirements. Jeff, Dave and Steve were the three professionals assigned to the project. They arrived as scheduled and removed the fiberglass tub/shower day one. Day two, they completed the shower pan installation, built a bench for inside the shower, added grab bars where we needed them, and drywalled. Day three, they did the grout, added a light inside the shower (they're recommendation and a good one), and put the shower doors on. These three professionals worked diligently and were very clean and neat in the bath area and outside. They clearly knew their trade and not only that, they were proud of their work and wanted us to be totally satisfied, which we were. It is rare these days to have someone come into your home and complete a job ahead of schedule, at a competitive price, and exceed your expectations. Ron Wood, along with Jeff, Dave and Steve did just that for us and I gladly give them an A+ rating. I would recommend without hesitation that you call them. Ron's efficient daughter, Stephanie, will answer your call and she'll call you the night before to confirm and then call to get feedback when the job is complete. Do not be put off by the lack of a fancy showroom or a slick sales rep and brochure. That's marketing expense this company figured out they don't need, so they can roll the savings onto you. I know because I met with the slick saleman who came from the competitor with a fancy showroom. Their price was $3000 higher American Bath for exactly the same work with two extra days. Plus, I felt from start to end that if there was a problem, Ron Wood would be involved to resolve it. This family run company understands the bath business and, moreover, understands how to deliver quality with a positive attitude. Ron will also offer you a list of references and I hope he adds my name to the list!
Description of Work: After estimates from three companies to remove a fiberglass tub/shower in a small apartment, and replace with a tiled shower with a bench, I selected American Bath. Because this project was for my Mother, who is 96 years old and lives independently, it was important that the job be completed on time, and that the workers be neat, and also that they spoke and understood english. The estimate was for three days and the job was completed in two and a half. In addition to replacing the fiberglass tub/shower, drywall had to be built, a bench built inside the shower, grab bars, and a light inside the shower as well.

The master bathroom remodel recently completed by American Bath Inc. looks like an HGTV ‘after’ picture - I could not be happier with the result! This bathroom remodel was my first remodeling experience, and the project was a challenge. The house is very old and made of stone. The bathroom has two doors and two very large windows, which made layout options very limited. The walls are plaster and lathe behind the sheetrock. The goal: transform a junky 80's era room with hulking cabinets, a broken down pre-fab shower, and the world's smallest sink into a clean, classic bathroom that would be modern but also look like it belonged in the house. I had very specific ideas about what I wanted, including reuse of historic light fixtures and the original clawfoot tub, plus white ceramic floor tile I'd purchased already. I'd gotten discouraged about finding someone to do the work. A couple of other companies claiming to do custom work had either failed to provide a quote at all, or suggested a run-of-the-mill bathroom that looked like any builder-standard room (but for a high-end price). So when I found American Bath on-line, they looked too good to be true. I sent in an email, and company owner Ron Wood responded the next day. He came out and spent considerable time talking with me about the job. He took a lot of time to understand what I really wanted, and made great suggestions about what would work in my space. Ron explained that he can do a job two ways: either take care of everything, or do the work and let the customer purchase and supply fixtures. After a couple of days, Ron got back to me with a quote for the work, and a list of specifications and recommended suppliers. I signed the contract, paid a deposit, scheduled the work, and followed up with Ron's recommended companies for refinishing the tub and building the custom glass shower. Once the job started, I really appreciated the crew. Jeff, Dave and Steve Herrod were the best team I could have imagined. They coordinated with suppliers, worked through a hundred unexpected surprises in my historic house, and kept everything clean and neat while doing the work. Most importantly, they had a real feel for the look I was trying to achieve, and that showed in every little detail, from the placement of the refinished clawfoot tub to the design of the molding. I can’t say enough good things about the crew or the work they did. The job started and finished on time, and at the agreed cost. Ron's daughter Stephanie cooordinated and communicated to make sure everybody knew what was going on at all times, and followed up after the job was complete to make sure I was satisfied. Thanks to Ron, Stephanie, Jeff, Dave and Steve for a great bathroom and a great remodeling experience!
Description of Work: Completely remodeled master bath. Cost listed in this report is for work done by American Bath and does not include the fixtures, which I purchased myself from suggested providers.

A problem with our hall bath did not manifest itself until some tiles became loose and I noticed that the wall behind the tile was no longer there. I called American Bath after reading excellent reviews about the company on the Maryland Better Business Bureau Website. Mr. Wood, the owner, arrived within the window promised for the estimate. He was able to quickly assess that the builder of my home (19 yrs ago) did not use cement board before installing the ceramic tile. We discussed the scope of the work and by the end of the day, Mr. Wood send me a written estimate via e-mail. I was impressed with Mr. Wood's depth of knowledge of bathroom remodeling and his straightforward, honest demeanor. Due to a cancellation, my work was scheduled within a week of my receiving the estimate. The two workers assigned to my job, Rob and Bob, were exceptionally good. They carefully laid down cloth from my front door, up the stairs, along the hallway and into the bath so as not to track dirt into my home. They took 2 days to do the work, never stopping to take lunch. When they unexpectedly found after removing the tile and drywall that the insulation was saturated with water and that mold had formed on the 2 by 4s, they stopped work, showed me the problem, and then called Mr. Wood so they could provide me with an estimate for the additional remediation work. I was pleasantly surprised that the cost to install new insulation and do the mold remediation was so reasonable. I agreed to an additional fee for new insulation and mold remediation. The finished product is beautiful in the hall bath. With regard to the upgrades in my Master Bathroom, I was again impressed at the quality of the work. The day after the work was finished, Mr. Wood called me to make sure that I was satisfied with the work. I highly recommend this company. In my opinion, both Mr. Wood and his workers are consummate professionals who are focused on customer service. They do what they promise, when they promised it, and do the excellent work for a reasonable cost.

Also, installed 2 new faucets and drains and 2 new light fixtures in Master Bath. Removed all debris resulting from repair/renovation.

I believe the price was average. The first team for the first bathroom was great. There were a couple of things that needed to be redone, but they were not completely redone by the second team. The second team they sent was not good. We were happy with the end product, but the guys were a little rude. They were supposed to finish the first bathroom and redo the second bathroom. It was a mess and obvious that the second team wanted to get out of it. I would not use them again in the future.
Description of Work: They redid two bathrooms for us. It was a small to medium size job.

There was a one week delay at the start, but after that, the work went very smoothly, and was completed on time. Contractors were very polite, left the site clean every evening, were able to accommodate small modifications to the original plan, and in general complied with every single point of the contract. We are happily using the new bathroom for over six months now!
Description of Work: Converted a half bathroom into a full bathroom (installation and plumbing for a new porcelain over steel tub, tiling, new toilet, new sink). Relocation of two doors, creation of two new walls, and replacement of ceiling.

Ron Wood, the owner, was very knowledgeable and pleasant in pricing out the job. His work ethic was very impressive: he just does bathrooms and he does it very well. Olga, the office person, is also pleasant and efficient. Rob and Bob, the installers for the project, were phenomenal! Not only did they arrive promptly every day, but each and every day they left their work area in pristine condition. I was amazed by how neat they left everything. And the speed of their work? I could not believe how quickly they transformed my bathrooms! They finished both jobs in 7.5 days; it had been scheduled for 12. This was a professional job with great care dedicated to making sure that everything was done to an exacting standard. They may cost a bit more, but, boy, are they worth it!
