I regret hiring Jose from EKJ & A General Contractor for my project. This general contractor proved to be unreliable and untrustworthy. He requested money upfront for materials but never delivered them. His communication was poor throughout the process, often leaving me in the dark about the project's status. When I asked how many people would be working on the project, he assured me there would be three. However, he showed up with Jose, another worker, his 19-year-old son, and two children under the age of 8. When questioned, he claimed that his young son knew a lot about construction, which was highly unprofessional and concerning. Overall, I strongly advise against hiring Jose and definitely don’t pay him in cash. My experience was frustrating and disappointing, and I hope others can avoid the same issues. I only wished I could give him less than one star

I am so pleased with this company and how they handled my request for repair of a chip on my countertop. The owner is amazing and followed up on his calls several times. while he wasn't able to repair the stone, he made several calls to his subcontractors to get me the right person who could do the job. Job went great and professionally. Job was started on time and finished on good time. Permits was pulled for this project. Passed all permits, plumbing, framing, construction concrete, electrical, and final inspection.

Jose did the work quickly and efficiently, and went beyond expectations to ensure the tub was level and secure on the less than perfect floor and the trap was adjusted to mate with the tub.

This is the second project I have done with Jose. With this project the ceiling was raised to follow the angle of the dormer roof. The floor was tiled, sink and toilet replaced and circular shower rod and facet installed for the claw foot tub. The bathroom was painted. I then added on haveing the old window replaced. Jose is always fair and courteous. I would definitely hire him again for future projects.

Excellent. Jose was on time and did what he proposed. The paint job was very well done. Overall the job was A-1.

We contacted the owner through Angies List by email. He came very promptly and took notes about the bathroom remodel work that I wanted to get done. It took over two weeks to get a proposal for the work. He quoted us $5000 for demoing 40sq feet of flooring, putting new floor new, installing a bathroom fan, replacing a 24" vanity, vanity light and toilet, along with fixing drywall when necessary. After negotiation he dropped the price to $3000. I told him that while I agreed to the price I needed his proof of insurance and MD home improvement licence (MHIC) number. I received the proof of insurance but after three follow up attempts to receive the MHIC # he didn't provide it. I tried looking him up by his address, business and personal name in the MHIC database but didn't find it. This leads me to believe that he is not licensed. Also, his insurance doesn't contain workman's comp which which is required if he employs anyone else and necessary to obtain a MHIC.

Jose GUARDADO replied to my email enquiry promptly and came to give an estimate the very next day. He was prompt in replying to my emails and even suggested some great ideas. Then he send a written estimate; Jose was very friendly and polite On Saturday he send two of his men who arrived early as requested and completed the work professionally before the time I needed to go for a doctor appointment. The men were polite and friendly too. They covered the kitchen floor with cloths and covered up all kitchen utensils, performed the job decently and cleaned up when they were done. Over all good experience and will call Jose and team again.

They did a good job. They were quick and efficient. The overall experience was excellent. The price and quality of work were excellent. They were punctual, responsive, and professional. I would probably use this company again.

The two men arrived earlier than scheduled, which I loved because it didn't take up my whole Saturday. They got to work immediately, and worked didligently to remove lent from the vent, hose inside and inside the dryer itself. They offered informative information about damp lent being removed from inside of dryer. I appreciate their work ethic, efficiency, and helpful information. Definitely good company and I will use them again, and refer them to others.

They were very professional. I believe they were on time and courteous. I didn't particularly care for their designs and I didn't think their prices were great.

It was wonderful and a pleasure to have Jose and his team working in our home! We would absolutely recommend J&A Home Improvement to our family and friends. Our only regret is that after such great work, we have been tardy in providing this well-deserved review. The kitchen remodeling was a big investment for us in time, money and effort. But we couldn?t be happier with the results. We spent many hours at various showrooms and on-line sites to discover what went into a well-made kitchen having a functional layout. When we had it all figured out, we still needed a contractor who could make it happen at a reasonable cost. Everyone we interviewed had good recommendations, which we double-checked on Angie?s List. During our interview, Jose thoroughly told us about his team, how much time they would need and how he would interact with us throughout the process. We chose Jose because his attitude, ideas and referrals showed he would be easy to work with and that his team could deliver quality work at a reasonable price. We signed the contract; Jose and his team tore apart the old kitchen and prepared for the new appliances. Then Jose agreed to our request to stop for 3 weeks so we could travel and the cabinets could be manufactured. Once the installation began, Jose arrived each morning with Gustavo and David and worked throughout the day. They always did a nice job at cleaning up after themselves and allowing us to continue our activities with the minimum of interference. However, we were able to monitor the progress and discuss numerous little and big issues that arose. When a problem was discovered (like the rotten flooring under the sink) they asked our opinion, discussed the pros & cons of each choice and then moved forward with our decision. Even when there were some issues with the cabinets - caused by the ceiling and floor not being square with each other - they worked amiably with our great cabinetmaker, Rick Walker, from Van Walker Woodworking. In closing, Jose, Gustavo and David, are very capable in a number of crafts (carpentry, electricity, plumbing), taking obvious pride in their work. We truly appreciate their always trying to do the best job possible (we never found them taking shortcuts on quality) and ?most of all ? their consistent, pleasant, can-do attitude. Even though the work finished in April, Jose was very responsive at fixing a few things needing a little improvement to be perfect.

His name was Jose Guardado. He was very punctual and very professional. He was really good with negotiating the price. I'm not sure he really finished the job. I thought he was going to put a sealant on the tile in the kitchen, but I don't recall him ever coming back to do that. He went to do some work for my Dad and he was supposed to come back and I don't recall him doing that. I haven't contacted him about it but I paid him for it. He should be professional and finish the work. He was professional in the work he did and he provided plans for the kitchen. He was pretty responsive and he was always on time. I might use him again.

Jose and his crew did a great job. They converted a closet we had into an office by moving the door and doing some drywall work. He and his crew also did some minor electrical work and some other things around our condo. Jose was very punctual and polite, and he was very responsive in terms of calling us right back if we had a question, calling us if he had a question, etc. We plan on getting some more work done in the future and will definitely use his company again. Overall, working with Jose was an excellent experience.

My kitchen was a total sh!thole with rotten floors, a drain with no pitch (so it never fully drained), minimal cabinet space and no counterspace. My boyfriend and I were eating out for about a year before I said enough is enough. I received several bids but decided to go with Jose because he used to work as a chef at some of the best restaurants in DC, so he had really good ideas about kitchen design and flow. Plus he had great reviews on this site. The kitchen took a bit longer than I would have liked, but he and his crew are so hard-working and they just don't give up until the job is done. I was worried about costs, but Jose gave me the names of several businesses he had worked with in the past (including a very inexpensive contractor wholesale warehouse out in Hyattsville.) Now I have a beautiful kitchen, I spend 90% of my at-home time in there and it is the most loved room in the entire house!!

We bought a fixer-upper about a year ago. Jose and his team helped make it a home. From the moment we met Jose, he worked with us to achieve the results we wanted, in the timeline we wanted, at a price we could afford. Jose and his team are hardworking, knowledgeable, talented, and delightful to work with. We consider them members of the family and would confidently place our trust in them for any future projects. We were looking to save money on our renovation and chose to do as much work ourselves as possible. We discovered Jose and his team through Angie's List and brought them in to do the big projects we didn't feel comfortable doing ourselves -- like taking out a load bearing wall and some major electical and plumbing adjustments. We ended up calling on them to help us with a host of other projects along the way, including some drywall and painting work, and they were were on site at a moment's notice when we had an unexpected (and gross) plumbing issue. Not only did they do the work we asked of them well and at a good price, but they were patient with us when we asked questions or made adjustments. They also went above and beyond the call of duty, giving us advice on projects we were struggling to do on our own. We wouldn't be where we are today without them. They have also since done some excellent tiling work for a friend. You would be lucky to have them do any work on your home.

They were fine. They came when they said they would and did the work and it was good workmanship. I actually didn't place the order, my husband did. I didn't hear anything one way or another so I am assuming it was fine.

The tiling job that they did is all cracking, so I called the head of their company and e-mailed him several times. He responded and said that he was going to come and look at it and repair it, but he has never gotten back to me in spite of multiple times I contacted him. Initially I thought that they came on time and they did everything and it looked good, but now with the fact that he is not that professional and is not returning any of my communication. I wanted to have some closet doors done and stuff, but even with that offer he still did not returned any of my communication. The last time I e-mailed him was about 2 weeks ago.

Jose promptly returned my call and scheduled an estimate but kept delaying giving an actual price. It was always tomorrow or the next day that he would have it ready. I still never got a final bid and had to move on with other bids. Over all I think he would have done the job well, he seemed knowledgeable and had some good ideas, but i guess my project was too small to be valuable to him. I will not be calling him in the future.

Jose and his team started the job. In every step of the process, he kept us informed and was flexible with our preferences and changes. I appreciate the level of their professionalism: they came on time and left clean; they kept good communication; they stayed late and on the weekend until they perfected the job. There are a little details to follow up with, but overall we are very happy to have worked with them and we will use them again in the future.

Jose and his crew were amazing. Everything about the renovation, the tiling, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry was done with exceptional skill and care. And Jose was a joy to work with throughout the entire project.
