I can't say enough great things about DL Boyd and working with them. This is the highest and best quality work you will see. Leo was terrific to work with and really exceptional in his craftsmanship. We were so pleased with the work, and the care taken to ensure that every aspect of it was done with attention to detail. Would definitely work with DL Boyd and Leo again!

I thought they were absolutely excellent! Mr Boyd and I spoke a couple of times, he called and asked if I had any concerns, he was very thorough. They sent Jerry for the work and one other man. They did an excellent job on the ceiling, the work is very beautiful. I believe that plastering work is messy and costly, Mr Boyd did an exceptional job the quality of work was exceptional. Any concerns I had they quickly addresses it, my ceiling is perfect I have no issue and its been almost a year. There a no imperfections everything was smooth and beautiful when they finished and I would use them again.

They began by moving out the big furniture from the room. They covered the floor very carefully. Then they removed the crown molding and the ceiling fan. They demoished the old ceiling and figured out how to replace the existing 100-year old structure supporting the ceiling with a new, improved version. They then put up a new plaster ceiling and finished up by painting the whole room. The first day they were there, Mr. Boyd sent his engineer (who had given me the estimate) so he could see what was going to be needed. After that, the 3 guys who continued with the job were always punctual and professional and their work was excellent.
Description of Work: I had to have a very badly cracked and sagging ceiling replaced. The crew demolished the old ceiling and replaced it. They also repainted the whole room.

I contacted DL Boyd by email on 06/10/15 requesting an estimate to remove the synthetic stucco siding on my home and replace with real portland cement stucco siding. DL Boyd contacted me back the same day to schedule for an estimator to come out the following week. I emailed the contact person at DL Boyd back agreeing to the date & time offered as well as asking them to email me the estimate and to answer some additional questions. The only email response I received was to confirm the estimate appointment time. The estimator came out on 6/18/15 as scheduled. On 6/25, a week after the estimator was at my home, I emailed the company requesting a copy of the estimate. A rep from DL Boyd emailed me a copy of the estimate 5 days after I requested the estimate. The estimate was as follows: 1. Protect all exposures 2. Install scaffold access 3. Scrape off loose stucco 4. Apply Stoguard liquid membrane 5. Install self-furring galvanized metal lath with all related appliances 6. Apply 3/8" coat portland cement plaster (PCP) "scratch" coat 7. Apply 3/8" coat of PCP "double" coat-density and moist cure 8. Apply white floated finish coat - moist cure as needed 9. Clean up and remove debris First off, it is not acceptable for a company to delay submitting an estimate to a customer for 12 days from the time the estimate was done (not matter how big the company is. Second, this estimate is proof in itself of how this company works by basically lumping the work that is necessary (e.g. scaffolding) as part of the bottom line over the top price they are unnecessarily charging. Third, the Stoguard liquid membrane is not an acceptable product for use as water resistant barrier when installing PCP. The recommended product by the Portland Cement Association is 2 layers of 60-minute grade D tar paper (and on the east coast the equivalent is building grade felt paper). Fourth, this company only provides a 1 year warranty on their workmanship. In terms of concrete and stucco I am fully aware that minuscule cracking and wear will develop over the years (and which adds to the charm of the building), however, a company that charges 6 figures for the work they do should guarantee that their work won't completely break off from the side of someone's home. In addition, there was no discussion provided by the DL Boyd company as to when work would commence and the length of time required to complete such a project as this. This company would be suitable for installing EIFS or synthetic stucco siding as they do not want to invest in the time required to install true cement stucco that will last for many decades to come. I have found the best traditional portland cement stucco company to work with in the whole DC metro area, and it is NOT D.L. Boyd.

We are sorry to hear that you were not pleased with the free estimate we provided. Our proposals, especially larger ones like this, are double and triple checked/edited by more than one manager before they are authorized for transmission. This is done with the intent of providing proposals that are accurate, succinct, and clear. Much like the old carpentry tenet to measure twice and cut once, we favor minimizing errors and providing quality. We also prefer to be as thorough as possible. When deemed prudent we seek pricing from a professional scaffold erection firm and include this as part of our cost. Proper scaffolding can make a big difference in the final aesthetics of a stucco finish (e.g. insufficient scaffolding can force applicators to leave "cold joints" resulting in obvious texture and/or color differences on that particular surface) as well as the quality and speed with which the work is performed. We are certainly happy to break-out the scaffolding cost on any proposal. The process of requesting and receiving a scaffolding quote often takes a few business days as well. We do provide a 1 year labor and materials warranty to comply with industry-standard. However, we also frequently provide 2 year, 5 year, and 10 year warranties upon request. We have been plastering in the DC metro area since 1930 and there are literally hundreds of edifices with plaster/stucco, applied by our firm, that remain in good condition to this day. We are not aware of any instance in over 85 years of business where our work has simply fallen off the side of an edifice, residential, commercial, or otherwise. Stoguard weather resistant barrier, specifically Sto EmeraldCoat for our purposes, is recognized by the International Code Council as an acceptable alternate to Grade D building felt. It is actually considered superior in some instances, at least in part because it provides the added benefit of doubling as an air-barrier. This can be verified on Sto’s website, www.stocorp.com, or directly with the ICC on their website, www.icc-es.org.

I found D.L. Boyd, Inc. through Angie's List and contacted them. They sent a gentleman out to give me an estimate. We later set up an appointment for someone to come out and repair the ceiling. They were very responsive and professional. There was absolutely no drama during the process, which I greatly appreciate. If I have a need for their service in the future, I will not hesitate to call them.
Description of Work: I had a hole in my ceiling due to a leak in my roof. I had the roof repaired, however, at some point prior to the repair, the ceiling became saturated with water as a result of hard rains and finally gave way, leaving a gaping hole in the ceiling.

The company overall did fantastic work and I would not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them. However, there were a couple "lessons learned" that perhaps could have been avoided, and might not occur at less-busy times. They were quick to respond to my initial inquiry and scheduled an estimator to come several days after that. The estimator was good, but clearly rushed. We talked about both the plaster work and then repainting once the work dried (we had an extensive conversation if it could be spot painting or would require doing the whole ceiling--we went with spot painting). Unfortunately, in his hurry, the painting part didn't get recorded, and the estimate was generated without that work included. And--entirely on me--I didn't catch that it wasn't included among the multiple line items, and just assumed it was included (never assume!!). The plaster work was really well done, and I'd give the work an A without doubt. But the worker(s) too were a bit rushed and left some scrapes, dings, and splatters. All were very minor, but all were also avoidable with a little more care. The plaster guy also came solo the first day only to discover our ceilings required an extension ladder and thus a second worker who was not available until Day Two. Again, one suspects the estimator could have passed that information along prior to the job starting, but things got lost in the shuffle. Of course, the big thing lost was the repainting portion of the work--which came as an unpleasant surprise that it wasn't anywhere in the contact. To their credit, Boyd offered an extremely fair price for the additional work, and got us onto the schedule for Round Two. When the plasterer-now-painter returned, that's when he really shone. No more rushing, tons of time to do the job right, tremendous care to get a perfect color match, and the work was fantastic. Obviously this is a warts-and-all review, and the bottom line remains that the company is great and does great work. But take the time to review everything carefully; make sure all the conversations had with the estimator find their way into the contract AND to the workers before they begin.
Description of Work: Repaired several cracks and damaged spots in two rooms and then painted over to match the rest of the ceiling and walls.

I understand this is a busy time of year but it was really hard to get any responses from them. After having to make numerous attempts to get them to return my messages I eventually left a review of the company on Angie's List. Derek finally called me back and said there was some confusion because they wrote down my name incorrectly (my name is Ed), they thought they called me back, and were not sure if they talked to me or not. They finally came out to give me an estimate for a job that they did once before two years ago (power wash my house). I didn't hear back from them for a couple of days so I called them back to see if I could get the estimate since I needed to make my final decision on who I was going to use. Derek promptly called me back and gave me the estimate. The was 33% more this time than it was two years ago. He said I was given a sweetheart deal last time. In summary I am sure they are a great company but I feel they let me down this time. I am actually going to go with the company that promptly responded to my call, came to my house on a Sunday to give me an estimate, and is charging me $400 more than what D.L. Boyd was going to charge me. Sometimes it's not just about the money.

We apologize that our communication was not as prompt and thorough as it should have been. The pressure washing we performed here a few years ago was in conjunction with other Stucco repairs to the home, which is why it appears our estimator issued a discount on the pressure washing. However, this time the pressure washing was a stand-alone proposal and thus was not discounted. We are pleased that our pricing was still ~ 15% less than our competitor, but regret that despite a pricing advantage we didn't communicate well enough to earn your business.

This company is very efficient and have used them for 25+ years from small plaster jobs to completely refinish the stucco on a home built in the early 1900's in Washington D.C. The job itself stretched over 8 weeks. It was a relatively minor job requiring a one-time drill of 2 pencil sized test holes, sanding, and several (2 possibly 3) coats of plaster, then wallpaper on top (which was not provided by Boyd). It involved 3-5 visits ranging from 30 to 60 minutes. While I was in no super hurry for the job to be completed, it was clear that this contractor had multiple projects of the same nature going on in this condo complex due to their relationship with the buidling management. The plasterer would spend 30 to 60 minutes on each unit that need repair. When asked for a detailed time review of how much time was actually spend on my unit, the provider was unable/unwilling to provide this information. The estimate that was provided was higher than the 3 that I obtained. Based on my estimate of time spent based on personal observation, I believe I severely overpaid for what was a simple plaster job. The only reason I went with this plasterer was because they had an existing relationship with the Condo building management and I was trying to be cooperative. The final straw was this contractor refused to reduce the price for the 5% coupon that they have posted on Angies list. Not only are they overpriced but their coupon is false and misleading advertising. They should be sanctioned from Angies List for posting a coupon that they would not honor. I would suggest using anyone other than Boyd for reasons of price, transparency of estimate to actual time spent and the lack of ethics in refusing to honor an advertised 5% discount. Update to review in response to contractors comments: The contractor's response mentions a technicality to get out of an advertised discount. The exact bill forwarded to the building was forwarded to me, I offered to fax a copy of the exact same bill that was given to building management to Boyd but they had no intention of offering the advertised discount. What they are effectively saying is that had they contracted with the person responsible they would have jacked up the price so they could create the illusion of a discount. It is a very cheap way of conducting business and responding to a customer concern. There is no empathy with respect to this contractor.
Description of Work: The provider was engaged to repair plaster damage in the common hallway of a condo building that leady grout from my bathroom alledgedly caused to the adjoining walls in the common hallway. I was the ultimate person responsible for the damages and bill which I paid.

The work that we performed here was in the corridor/common-area and not in Mr. [removed member name]'s unit. The request for a proposal came from the building manager, who we have a long-standing relationship with. Our contract to do the work was also with the building management. The invoice was sent to building management and the payment we received was from the building management. We did not perform any work at the behest of Mr. [removed member name], we did not work on any property owned or rented by Mr. [removed member name], nor did Mr. [removed member name] make payment to us for services rendered. Whether building management ultimately charged Mr. [removed member name] for all or a portion the bill we do not know. If Mr. [removed member name] were our direct customer he would have been able to receive competitive bids to compare to ours and of course we would honor our 5% discount offer for Angies List members, as we have for 100% of our direct customers who are Angies List members. We feel empathy for Mr. [removed member name], but our customer here (building management) is satisfied with our work/prices and has been for over 20 years.

Thank you for the kind words. The work we performed here was actually stucco rather than ceramic tile. The owners were displeased with the company who applied the majority of the base coat so we took over and applied the finish coat. Unfortunately we weren't able to begin working until late December so we were dodging the cold/precipitation and were only able to apply stucco when the weather cooperated. This did cause the job to take longer than anticipated. We provided some complimentary exterior transition sealant that we hope somewhat compensated for the longer-than-anticipated duration.

The skill and quality of work by Myx and Hector is outstanding - they clearly know the craft of plastering and how to repair and restore original plaster work. Their work was far better than we had hoped in a day and age when other contractors would have removed entire sections of the original walls & ceilings and installed drywall rather than attempt a restoration using classical plaster and lathe techniques. The work involved repairing and restoring water damaged ceilings and walls in our entry foyer, and living room where a roof and gutter leak had caused the surface of the plaster to separate from the base layer. In some places, there were deep cracks (from earthquake) which were stabilized prior to applications of materials to resurface and restore the plaster. Crumbling coved ceiling mouldings that could not be replicated in modern materials were carefully sealed and resurfaced. We also added repairs to a large section of wall and ceiling in the master bedroom to the original work order that we thought would be beyond our budget to have repaired. But on talking with them further, realized that it could be done efficiently while the crew was already there for the other rooms. The total cost was very reasonable. From initial phone call to obtain an estimate to completion of work, our experience was pleasant and professional. They were most respectful of our concerns about scheduling around the needs of our elderly father. They took care about protecting furniture and belongings with tarps and isolating the work areas. They cleaned up everything at the end of each work day.

Boyd was one of two companies I contacted. The other firm came several days later, but submitted their estimate more quickly than Boyd. It was also a lower estimate, and included several options for the work, and a separate estimate for painting the ceiling after repair, which Boyd included only after they sent the first estimate and I asked them so I could compare the two. The ceiling was done (by the other company) about 6 weeks ago and this week, I got an email from Boyd asking if I was still interested in having the work done. Based on my neighbors' recommendations and the Angie's reviews, I am pretty sure they would have done a good job, but their follow-through at the beginning discouraged me.

Boyd's was recommended by real-estate professional as long-standing company well known for both large and small jobs. 50+ year old ceilings had sagged after earlier flooring and storage in attic caused downward pressure. Master plasterer himself, 25+years w/ company, appeared for the estimate, then set appointment 2 months later to accommodate my travel. He appeared promptly arranged date w/ helper, proceeded to finish main job in 3 days, followed in 1 wk. for touchup of dried plaster. Work was paint-ready, and finished beautifully by later contractor. Cleanup was immaculate.
Description of Work: Replaced, repaired and finished total sagging plaster ceilings in 3 upstairs bedrooms. Excellent workmanship, efficient, and clean.
