Manny from American Professional Chimney and Masonry initially performed the chimney cleaning, which was quick and efficient. He also inspected the wood stove, and told us that it was in perfect working condition. Manny then tried to sell us a fireplace grate for use inside the wood stove. We declined. Upon first use of the wood stove, smoke began billowing into the house. Everything in the room smelled like a campfire for weeks. After a couple of phone calls with the office, American Professional Chimney and Masonry sent Brian out to our home. Brian inspected the wood stove and told us that it was not in working condition (which we already found out), and was not repairable. Brian also noted that fireplace grates were completely unnecessary for wood stoves. After Brian's assessment, American Professional Chimney and Masonry refunded our money for the original botched inspection. While American Professional Chimney and Masonry refunded our money in the end, I and my pregnant wife could have done without the smoke-filled room and weeks of campfire smells.

I'm sorry to learn that your house got smoky when you use your stove. When many clean the chimney, he was trying to be helpful and simply let you know that he saw no problems with your stove. Of course, when Brian went out, he knew that the stove was leaking and it was easy for him to determine that it wasn't usable. Chimney cleaning companies don't usually build a fire as part of a routine chimney cleaning. I'll let the guys know that if a customer has never used their fireplace or their wood stove, that they should advise the home owner to build a small fire and watch for any potential smoke leakage into the home the first time they try to use it. Once in a while a fireplace or wood stove will look perfect but still smoke, so it is always better to err on the side of caution. The use of a grate in a woodstove is optional and many people choose not to use a great because they take up space and wood stoves have fairly small fireboxes. I think Manny was just making a suggestion and not actually trying to sell you a great because we don't carry grates. Grates are easily available from your local fireplace accessory store. I'm sorry about the upset that you experienced. Catherine, the manager, and I and all of our employees put more emphasis on customer service excellence than any other chimney company in the area. I thank you for mentioning that we came back out to reevaluate the situation and that we gave you a 100% refund. Given that, I feel an F was a very harsh grade, but I excepted and will do what I can to prevent future upsets of a similar nature. Any Angie's list members reading this review that have not use their fireplace before, I suggest using caution when burning it for the first time. You may also specifically make a request for us to come out and build a fire and tested for you. Thank you. Dave Myers, owner

the equipment used is not professional, just a vacuum with a host instead a broader cover that catch all dusts. I thought the cleaner should have one people up on the roof brushing, and one people down at the fireplace to vacuum. But in stead, both at the fireplace, one with a brush with extension, and the other vacuums. Here is some more update, the work was done in May, but throughout the last 3 months, the fireplace still s*** smells big time, whenever there is any downdraft, the chimney burning smell will fill the room. I believe the problem is they never brush the chimney enough to get rid of the soot. We never had this bad smell from the fireplace/chimney before. I will not recommend service from them.

Thanks for leaving your review. Chimney cleaning has changed quite a bit over the years. We used to clean chimneys from the top back in the early 70s. We used a rope and a lead weight with burlap bags or wire brush attached. We had no choice but to lower the weight from the top. Since then, there have been many innovations in chimney cleaning. The use of plastic and fiberglass rods has made chimney cleaning much safer and practical to do from inside the home. One important factor is that if you clean the chimney from the top you cannot monitor what's happening below and even if you have another person down, below he cannot tell you quickly enough to stop brushing, if it dust starts to escape. The days of truck mounted vacuums for chimney cleaning are pretty much over as well. There are now portable vacuums which work very well. The big truck mounted vacuums are still sometimes used for the furnace and duct cleaning, but portable vacuums are being used for much of that now days as well I'm glad that you didn't mention getting any dust into your house. That doesn't happen, if people are careful and follow the proper procedures. Thanks for giving us a review and providing me the opportunity to explain modern chimney cleaning procedures. Two workers came by at the designated time and were courteous and direct in regards to what needed to be done. Once they had cleaned out the chimney they took time to talk to me about proper usage, care and maintenance of my fireplace & chimney. They also performed a quick inspection of the outside of the chimney, and mentioned I should consider a new cap in the coming years but were not pushy about it at all which was nice.

Thanks for the great review! I really like to hear it when customers say the guys weren't pushy at all. Many people get surprised when we leave a large estimate and I just like to assure everybody that if that happens, we will not apply any pressure and we will explain to you which repairs or urgent and which are not. We try to be informative and not persuasive. Most of our customers really appreciate that about us. After all, if there are issues with your chimney, I'm sure you would want to know about them. You just may not want to get them done right away and we totally understand that. We are consumers also. Dave Myers, owner
Cleaned chimney using brushes and vacuum from inside living room. Inspected chimney flue and cap from roof. Photographed missing flashing. I showed the workman the ash dump from the chimney in the basement, expecting they would clean it. They declined, saying it was nasty work and might have dead animals in it. Isn't that part of a chimney cleaning? Proposed a major re-pointing of entire chimney from ground to top ($1000); replace fireplace flue tile at top of chimney ($75); Remove roofing tar from crown and replace with flexible membrane ($450); Parge smoke chamber w/ insulated cement, remove damper & reinstall ($500). Total proposed additional services: $2025. It seemed to me the chimney cleaning "deal" is a way for this company to propose major other repairs that may or may not be needed. I used my roofer to replace the missing flashing and to ensure that the chimney cap was in place.

Thanks for the B review despite the fact that you weren't very happy with getting a large estimate. It is true that we generate additional work when we leave estimates for problems we see when we clean and inspect chimneys. Part of chimney cleaning is inspecting the chimney and it's actually a code requirement for us to do just that. It's also a requirement for us to disclose the conditions that we see that are not up to current code. I feel that the best approach to doing this, is to prioritize each repair and explain the nature of each repair thoroughly to our customers in a way that is informative but applies no sales pressure whatsoever. In that way we can fulfill the requirement of the home-improvement laws and real estate disclosure laws and give our clients valuable information, without being irresponsible for obnoxious like a lot of sales people are. We actually don't hire any sales people. We hire professional Masons and chimney technicians and then train them to do estimates and inspections but we do not train them to close deals or make sales. I'd like to leave that to the auto sales industry :) If you have any doubt about the necessity of the repairs or you'd like to get a little more information about them, please give me a call. My cell phone number is 202-468-5596. I'm the owner and I would be glad to come out and look over your chimney with you. I can take photographs of the chimney so you can see the conditions close up and we can talk about which ones are urgent and which ones can wait a few years and that sort of thing. Thanks again for your review. Dave Myers, owner
Emailed vendor on June 2nd and Catherine responded by phone within 2 minutes. She explained their $119 coupon deal and services and scheduled us for June 4th. On June 3rd Maria called to confirm the time window of 9:00am-9:30am on the 4th and said Brian and Kevin would be scheduled. At 9:15am on June 4th Brian and Kevin showed up. They brought in their gear, took off their shoes and began going to work moving furniture out of the way and carefully laying a blanket down. Brian took time to explain to me one hole in the firebox lining that would need to be patched with insulated cement and showed it to me via a flashlight. They did a video inspection and he explained what he was seeing on the video screen. Overall the chimney lining was in good shape. They cleaned it out thoroughly and showed me how the damper worked properly. He did a rooftop chimney inspection and explained some brickwork should be repaired on the cap. He wrote up notes with some quote estimates for the repair work and handed me a receipt for the coupon deal. He was not trying to push additional services on us and was a pleasure to deal with. I will definitely use them again. I would note that I had this work done in June so people should not complain if there are delays in the middle of winter. LOL!

The chimney cleaning went wonderful. Brian was efficient, helpful, and extremely friendly! The only bad marks I give them is for the office organization. I contacted them three times before the set date. The afternoon prior to my appointment the office manager called me to request my phone number. Unbeknownst to me, Angie's List provides minimal information to service providers. When I called American Professional Chimney back the day before my appointment the office manager was in a huff that she didn't have my phone number; you could hear her frustration with Angie's list and the customers they get from here. I got annoyed because it almost sounded like she was annoyed at me for this (for which I am a bystander). After a 10min conversation she took my phone number and then we hung up. They never showed up the next day. When I called the office 30min after the scheduled appointment a more competent office personnel told me I never gave them my phone number or unit number (how was I suppose to know they didn't have a unit number either?). She rescheduled my appointment. Later that same day, the original office manager called back to accuse me of never giving them my pone number. I proceeded to rehash our memorable conversation, upon which time she admitted that yes, she took my phone number down the previous day and must have misplaced it. She assumed all responsibility and apologized.' Mistakes happen and people misplace things. I wish the office manager had been more kind from the beginning and didn't automatically assume (1) I knew what information Angie's list provided them and (2) that I was the unorganized unresponsive person. I appreciate the apology from the office manager and Brian was kind, efficient, and smart so we will use the service again. Just a word of warning to any Angie's list customers reading this... call American Professional Chimney & Masonry prior to the appointment and have them read your phone number and unit number directly from your file! It will save you hassle and time. We will make sure to do this next year when we use them again.

The chimney sweeping went very well and we had no problems with that aspect of the service. We were very surprised, however, to be told that we need to rebuild our entire chimney for 8k+. Having just had the house inspected and the chimney closely examined, we know that the chimney is structurally fine. It was disappointing to follow up good chimney service with a dishonest quote for unneeded repairs.

I will examine your estimate and see if I you will allow me to take a look at your chimney myself. I seriously doubt your chimney is perfect. All of our employees are very honest and trustworthy and we do not employ people who would attempt to sell work that is not at all warranted. Some conditions like spalling or flaking brick can go unaddressed for some years, but it does not necessarily mean there is nothing wrong or that nothing should be done, though that is an option. I'd rather not say much more though, until I have personally seen your chimney. I thank you for your review, as I am sure others are surprised when they learn they have expensive repair issues. I hope my response is the kind of response one would appreciate of a business owner. I take every review seriously and every customer's home and their feelings are very important to me. As said above (I'll just cut-and-paste): I hired them for $90 based on an Angie's List promotion for a chimney sweep. When they got to my house, they "discovered" many urgent things I needed to add on, some of them located at the top of our chimney, therefore difficult to check to see if there was, in fact, urgency. Nevertheless, I authorized additional work and paid for it, bringing the total to $90 + $600 (or $690), all of which I paid (and they cashed) in March 2014. On May 25, 2015 (yes, over a year later), without an explanation of any kind, they emailed me a bill for an additional $925, claiming the total was $1,525. They also called my work and my cell phone. When I called them to inquire (at that point, I hadn't opened the emailed invoice as I thought this might be a spam/virus), they said they'd lost the bill for over a year and that I owed this much. I said I'd paid them 100% of what I was billed in 2014, which is my habit. I asked them for a written explanation, but none was given. Instead, we rec'd. another invoice, this time by mail. There are some things on the bill I have no memory of them having done, and that it's doubtful they did. For example, they claim to have done $250 of work on our "front chimney," which we closed 13 years ago and have not touched since then. It's been 15 months since the services were provided, I do not still have the paperwork, I can't remember the name of the person who provided the service, and so no good means of disputing this. Yet I'm concerned that, if I don't pay them, it will hurt our credit rating. I'd never use this company again, and warn Angie's List customers not to use them.

We are thrilled with the service of this company, and the owner, Dave Myers, in particular. They sent a 2 man crew to install a furnace liner in our old, complicated chimney, which we needed to pass our plumbing permit inspection. The crew worked diligently for a whole day, and were clean and polite. After the American Professional crew performed the work, we were informed by another source that the configuration of the pipes in the basement leading to the liner would not pass permit inspection. We called American Professional, and the office manager promptly put the owner, Dave Myers in touch with us. Dave drove out to our house the very same day to check out the situation and spent an hour inspecting the work himself and troubleshooting the problem. The crew had initially done a fine job which was safe and would work, just would not pass code inspection due to the complicated and cramped configuration of our furnace and chimney. Dave came back a few days later, at our convenience, with an assistant and spent an entire day fixing the configuration to ensure it was exactly to code. He did this at no additional charge beyond what we had been quoted. He also came by several days later to attend the final permit inspection so that he could explain in person to the inspector what the situation was and show them how he had ensured that the work was compliant with code. The job ideally would have taken a 2-man crew just 1 day, but ended up taking up more than twice the man hours and had the owner of the company out to our house 3 times. I've never seen the owner of a company more committed to ensuring a perfect outcome of a project. It was not the cheapest quote we got on this work, but we are 100% satisified that we hired this company. It was money well spent.

We were extremely pleased with the professionalism of everyone at American Chimney. Dave's quality control and attention to detail particularly on the back end of the job was great -- he went above and beyond to make sure we were more than satisfied. He is a great problem-solver and makes you feel comfortable learning about how to maintain and manage things. Catherine is very efficient about getting crews scheduled and calling the night before. All crew members were polite and solicitous of my many questions, which I very much appreciated. Everyone was careful and professional. I couldn't give a higher recommendation!
Description of Work: Two chimney rebuilds, chimney liner and furnace liner replaced, installed gas insert fireplace, water repellent -- in other words, a lot of work.

Thanks for the awesome review! It was a pleasure to meet you and assist you with the issues with your chimney. Thank your mom for me for being so hospitable. She also went well above and beyond the call of duty, allowing me to sample her authentic homemade Chinese cuisine. That was a rare and delicious treat! Dave Myers, owner

Was not able to schedule service.
Description of Work: I purchased one of the deals - $119 for a single chimney inspection and cleaning. I've called twice, leaving messages both times, to schedule the service and didn't receive a response either time. Will be asking Angies List for a refund.

Thanks for leaving your review. I checked with Catherine, in our office, and she said she was able to reach you earlier today. I'm glad to hear she has scheduled to have Brian come out and clean and inspect your fireplaces. I understand you told Catherine that the last time you called the call was inadvertently disconnected. I apologize for the inconvenience. I'm sure you will be pleased with Brian's services. I have the utmost confidence in him. Dave Myers, owner
Very responsive. Was able to do the additional Maintenance work the same day. Showed homeowner exactly where problems were. Provided 10 year warranty on caps.
Description of Work: Cleaned chimney under Angie's list promotion. Also recapped two chimneys and reprinted brick work on one chimney. Very professional and thorough.

American Professional Chimney and Masonry was very punctual, helpful, and did a great job repairing my chimney. They came out to provide a quote, told me what was optional and then was able to complete the work the following week once I completed the email authorization. They were a pleasure to work with and I would recommend them to a friend.
Description of Work: American Professional Chimney and Masonry did a great job of repairing my chimney leak by removing some of the old mortar and replacing it. They also completed a re-cap of the top of my chimney.

Thanks for the wonderful review! It is really nice to receive a Page Of Happiness Recommendation as well. We are not perfect, but we certainly strive to do our best and it is very rewarding to be complimented for our efforts! Dave Myers, owner
Overall went ok. On internal and external inspection, the Technicians reported that both chimneys needed to be rebuilt from the roof line up, that the flue pipes were out of alignment, and that neither chimney should be used in their current condition; they also stated that the smaller utility chimney should have a stainless steel liner I had 2 other concrete/masonry firms inspect the chimneys after I received the AMP&C inspection report. The other firms agreed the situation was primarily appearance and aesthetic only, and not structural, on both chimneys. They also stated that a rebuild was optional to improve the appearance, but not required for structural or safety reasons; the also stated the flue pipes were fine, and that a liner was a good idea, but that the chimneys could be used as is without concern. I asked the owner of APC&M for his opinion; he visited the project site personally, and provided a similar final assessment. While he continued to recommend rebuild, he stated the chimneys were structurally sound, and the issue was mainly appearance anticipating future sale I fully understand the subjective nature of the different assessments, and have no complaints or concerns with AMP&C. They are a good firm, and I would use them again for chimney cleaning and inspection. They only concern and complaint I do have, is that the Technicians left a large area of the fireplace hearth covered in soot, which came off their drop cloth; it got on everything in the room, and was very messy and difficult to clean. I do appreciate the advice and counsel from AMP&C ... again, a good firm and I'd use them again.
Description of Work: Cleaned and inspected 2 chimneys at special rate.

Thanks for the review. As you stated, I visited your home, myself. The main chimney is in pretty bad shape, with deteriorating brick on top, but the other is not so bad. It really does need a liner installed, however, as the old liner has holes in it. It's not that we don't see that a lot or that it will necessarily leak into the home, it's just a possibility that could occur and we suggest eliminating that possibility. We have very strict mandates from the County Permitting Inspection Dept to follow the guidelines of the National Fire protection Agency and advise all of our clients with internal chimney issues or other possible safety concerns to get their repairs performed before the chimneys are used. Many people view this as a sales tactic, but it is not that at all. Chimney Safety is a real concern. Over 50,000 fires and probably more carbon monoxide leaks occur every year in the US alone. Companies that say things like it is not that bad or you can get by for a few years before you need to be concerned are taking a chance with your safety and making themselves liable. For more information of the subject, you should contact the Montgomery County Department of permitting and inspections or the chimney Safety Institute of America, the nations leading authority on Chimney Issues. Thanks again for the review. Dave Myers, owner
