This is a list of the problems Ted caused in my little cottage: Critical: Lacks vent for plumbing waste line, creating a dangerous situation All water pipes, faucets and fixtures, and water heater were filled with and damaged by gravel from inappropriate technique used to repair outside water break. He was explicitly told to wait until the water level dropped so my other worker could fixed it above the water line. He didn?t wait, but incorrectly fixed it himself. All plumbing needed to be replaced. Shower in bathroom 100% dysfunctional: leaked; shower liner leaked; drain leaked into basement; shower door installed improperly and leaked; pan unsupported. Unusable. Dysfunctional: Drywall in bathroom: incomplete and very poor quality workmanship Insulation not added to ceiling before Sheetrock installed Drain in vanity leaked due to missing part Toilet leaked into basement Improper electrical wiring; outside plugs not on a ground fault; bathroom, kitchen, and misc plugs on same circuit; lights and plugs were improperly wired Aesthetic: Bubbles under vinyl in bathroom floor because floor not prepped correctly?then poorly repaired with big holes visible Window in bathroom very poorly trimmed (gaps) Toilet poorly placed in bathroom A square sink was substituted for requested corner sink, claimed corner sink unavailable, but I found out it was Did not offer owner option for copper plumbing; unilaterally installed PVC Poor placement of bathroom fixtures, e.g. light was off by several inches from the medicine cabinet Poor placement of basement appliances?electrical panel too close to location for washer/dryer; not where requested by water heater Consequences: All plumbing, faucets and fixtures, and water heater had to be replaced Entire bathroom had to be deconstructed down to the studs and floor and rebuilt Electrical wiring?had to add more breakers and add ground faults Venting for plumbing had to be retrofitted on exterior since all walls now closed in. I contacted Ted when I found his email address. I proposed an amicable settlement. Instead of standing by his work and working toward a settlement, he took down his web page two days after I sent my email and ran.
Description of Work: I am having a small cottage built in West Virginia. Ted first put in a new stairway. It was okay, no problem. So, I had him do some more work that he claimed he could do. He then put in the electrical and plumbing. I had someone else helping with the electrical who did a lot of preparation work. Ted undid his work and created several other functional problems. He located the electrical panel where it was convenient for him, not where it was needed. The plumbing was disastrous--most egregious was not installing any kind of venting for the waste line, which is rather dangerous. Second, all water lines were filled with gravel. Everything else leaked. Nothing worked at all. Because the water was shut off for the winter we didn't discover it for months, when we began more work in the spring. The bathroom he put in was atrocious and ultimately totally unusable. I had to go back to the studs to fix it. The electrical and plumbing problems were not discovered until I had additional work done on my house. Ted demanded payment even though we did not have an opportunity to inspect his work. He claimed he stood by his work. He was nearly impossible to reach after we discovered the problems. When I most recently contacted him to resolve the problems he caused, his response was to take down his website. All I can to is warn everyone I possibly can about him. Do not allow this man near your property!!! He is totally incompetent and irresponsible.

Response from TMJ Home Improvement
The member has not attempted to contact me in any form concerning the problems she has had. Many of the items in her complaint were not done by my company. The listed dates of job completion are wrong. The work was completed in Aug. 2008 and not Jan. 2009. The work is several months past my 12 month warranty period, however, I would have been willing to work with her had she contacted me. I believe the problems she has had are a direct result of failure to winterize the property and a lack of general knowledge about construction standards. I have included a detailed response to her accusations and have attempted to contact her via phone only to find out her number has been changed. I would also forward a copy to her, however, I no longer know where she is residing as it has been over a year since I have heard from her. I have also attempted to contact her local handyman concerning this matter to get more info, however, he does not return my calls. She has lied in her complaint and also accused me of botched work on many items that I didn't do. I offer no restitution to the member and consider the matter closed. - Ted McWhinney, Owner

Responsive in giving me an estimate and scheduling a time to do the work. However, he said he would be at the house at 10am to begin the work. I stayed until noon and he still hadn't arrived. He called at 5pm to say the work was completed (sooner than I expected). When I got home to pay him, he said he arrived at 10am. When I told him that I waited until noon for him to arrive, he said they worked fast and should still be paid the $400 he estimated it would cost. I don't mind paying for the work, but I dislike that he lied about his arrival time. The basic work was done to spec, but upon further investigation, a few problem areas that I had pointed out earlier were overlooked, e.g., straightening out 2 posts.
