We knew from the beginning that we were looking at replacement and not repair. Sales rep came to home on Memorial Day Holiday weekend. He was on time, very polite, and took a lot of time to explain our options. He was also very careful with the home (ie: moved his car because he was concerned he was in neighbors way, wore booties in home, etc). Price came in very high, $700-800 higher than a previous estimate we had gotten for same make/model. When we compared the estimates, however, we realized that the first quote included unit and install, and a VERY limited warranty and listed an optional "upgraded" warranty for $750. Comparing the upgraded warranty of the first quote to the standard/included warranty of Chilltrol, Chilltrol's was a bit better. Would have liked to have gone with this company and would have liked the additional peace of mind of the comprehensive warranty package, but the added cost was simply not in our budget.

We spent about $ 7500 on that service. They may have been expensive, but they did a wonderful job and it was worth it. It was quite an extensive thing and they did just a wonderful job.
Description of Work: We used Chilltrol Heating & Air in June or July 2007 and they put in a new heat pump system in our house and they replaced the main unit on our first floor.

Scheduling was easy and the person I spoke to to make the appointment was friendly. I mentioned the Angies List advertisement for a 69.95 check-up, she asked me some general questions about my HVAC system, age of system, etc. They were able to come to my property in two days for the checkup and I was told the tech would call prior to arriving. On the day of the appointment, I called the company to indicate the tech had not arrived within the timeframe that was scheduled for my appointment. The person I spoke to mentioned the tech was on another job and would call me back. The technician called to mention he was running late and arrived an hour later. Technician was professional and performed a thorough inspection of my furnace and heat pump. He also made recommendations for items that should be addressed and answered my questions. When it came time to pay, I was surprised that the amount was double the advertised price. The tech indicated the $69.95 price was per system and since I had a furnace and heat pump, it was doubled. I thought it was unfair that the person who I spoke to when making the appointment never mentioned that despite taking information on my heating system and it was not clearly stated in the advertisement which I have attached to this report. I may have used this company in the future and even considered taking a service contract with them, but given the circumstances, I don't feel they are trustworthy.
Description of Work: I contacted Chilltrol after seeing an ad in the Angies List January edition booklet for the area. I opted to receive the 15-point Ultimate Precision Heating Tune-up & Safety Inspection for 69.95 advertised in the booklet and thought it would be a good opportunity to try out a company I had not used previously.

It went well. The Tech did the inspection. The Tech then went over the inspection and explained the items tested. For the price, I would do it again, however I don't know if I would spend double.
Description of Work: The service was an "Angie's List Big Deal". The service was an inspection of the furnance for winter, so it was pretty straight forward.

They did a great job installing the system. They cleaned up after themselves. They were so neat! They made sure there was no dirt, and even wanted to vacuum my floor downstairs when they finished. I told them they didn't need to. There was little to no mess left whatsoever. They even helped me move items I thought were not in the way initially. I am very pleased with the installation and the unit! They are even coming back on Monday to do a follow up inspection. They were very cordial and polite, and able to answer any question I threw at them too!

The system failed within two days of installation because the installation was faulty. It did not drain the condensation correctly. It failed again before the end of the summer, with the same problem. I called them back out mid-winter because the system was so very noisy. They could not correct that problem, and (when it's working) it's still very loud. The A/C failed again in April, and the service tech told me there was a hole in the coils which caused the coolant to leak out. He explained that it was under warranty, but he would have to order the part. He told me they would call me when the part came in. It got cold again, so I didn't need the A/C and didn't follow up on the part. It's warm this weekend, and I have no A/C. When I called the company, the lady on the phone did not offer to send someone out today to fix it (it's Sunday). She couldn't tell me if the part was in. All she could do was schedule a service tech to come out tomorrow between 11:00 and 5:00 (six hours!). She couldn't even tell me that the service charge would be waived. This company is awful. I would never hire them again, and wish I could get warranty service from another company.
Description of Work: My home is about 15 years old, built with contractor grade HVAC system that failed last summer. The Chilltrol service technician recommended I replace the system, as it was older and inefficient. I did replace the system, buying the upgraded model for higher efficiency and for the tax credit. Chilltrol installed the Trane XL201 Weathertron.

An extremely courteous, professional tech, Jake, arrived at the appointed time. He checked out the system and determined an expansion valve had failed. The part had to be ordered and he would be back by the end of the week (this was Tuesday) Before he left, he came back and said they had the part available and he could be out the next day (Wednesday) to complete the job. He had to evacuate all the refrigerant from the system, pull a vacuum and add new refrigerant. Jake worked dilligently for most of the morning, completed the job and was on his way. I could not have asked for better service. I was surprised to read some of the negative comments, but glad to see there were very few. I would like to see the company's response to them though. I will absolutely call on these folks for any HVAC needs and highly recommend them to anyone. I'd also recommend you ask for Jake, even though they probably don't take requests like that:o)
Description of Work: After getting an astounding $850 electric bill and noticing the 5 year old Trane heat pump did not seem to be heating properly, we called Chilltrol, the original installers of the system and service contract. A failed expansion valve had to be ordered and installed. We also had the programmable (very user unfriendly) thermostat replaced with a simple one.

The next morning I recieved a prompt phone call from the office lady. She told me the rate would be $550-$600. I was flabberghasted. I asked her what their hourly rate was, she told me "we are a flat rate company". I told her the tech couldn't even do the job, he just offered to recapture and replace my own refrigerant. She told me that he indicated it would take 2-3 hours (the lenght of time jumped?). I asked her, "does your company then charge $200 to $300 per hour?!?!" and she said "I dont know, we're a flat rate company". I told her that unless I got a straight answer, I would never call her company again, as that is outlandish. She said "OK".
Description of Work: I called for an estimate on a straightforward job. They wanted $89 to come look at it. I told them I had already had it estimated and it was a very simply compression fitting replacement, just wanted a phone estimate before I paid them to come out. Glad I did. First lady who answered did not know anything about heat pumps. Had a tech call me back, and return call was immediate, very professional. I explained the job, he did not think he could do the whole job since it involved the water side of a heat pump. He did tell me they could come out, recapture the refrigerant from my compressor, then come back out at a later date and refill it, and I would do the actual seal replacement myself. I said that would be great. He told me it was 1.5-2 hours total to drain and refill, sounded a little on the long side (I've had this work done before many times on home aC systems) but reasonable for over the phone. He told me he didn't handle money, so the office lady would have to call me back with the cost.

Great. We had another company come out and look at our AC units--we have 5 zones in our building. We were told that we needed a new AC unit for one of the zones and it would cost $5,000.00 to replace. We decided that we needed to get a second opinion because it was very costly and we didn't really feel comfortable with the company that gave us the estimate. We called Chilltrol for a second opinion and the repairman inspected the unit and determined that we did not need a whole new unit but needed to replace the condenser on the unit instead. We were so excited because we saved over $4500 from the original estimate!!

The original estimate was great - very professional and gave several options to meet our needs. Once we decided on a plan, we were able to schedule installation the same week. The installation was a little rough. They were supposed to arrive at 7am but didn't show up until 8:30 - we heard later that they always have a morning meeting at 7 so there is no possibility of them being at a job at that time. The installers were very nice - polite, hard working, etc - but couldn't get the AC unit working. We had to ask them to wrap up at 9:30pm on a Monday night. The supervisor came out the next day at our convenience and told us the unit needed more coolant. He only had a small amount with him and told us the installer would have to come back. This was scheduled again at our convenience on a Saturday morning. The installer stayed another 4 or 5 hours to get the units working. The installer didn't have a copy of the contract and didn't know what our balance should be. Luckily, we had a copy and were able to prove that we paid 50% down on order. Overall, things were ok. When issues arose, they dealt with them professionally and in a timely manner.

When I set up the appointment I was told the initial call would be $89 and any repair would be parts plus an hourly rate ($40 or around that). The repairman was punctual and professional, He determined that the plastic drain tray is cracked and needs to be replaced. He gave me a price quote of $750 to replace the tray. I asked for hourly rate but he declined and said this is fixed price. He did say the tray is cheap but the labor is what makes this high. I would NOT recommend this service, because on the phone I was told an hourly rate but the quote was given as a fixed rate (very high).

First, they are the only company we found in the area that knew about this new type of technology. That says something right there. But, in addition, their work was excellent, exactly as scheduled. They explained everything to us. A week later, a supervisor dropped by to verify that it was working well for us and asked if we had any questions. We were very satisfied and will use them for any other HVAC work around our house.

We knew our heat pump was going. Our auxiliary heat was kicking on frequently in March and was driving up our KWH consumption dramatically. It was time (probably past time) to replace it. We had contacted several companies and were getting "sticker shock" at the price of a new HVAC unit. Then, our neighbor's heat pump gave up the ghost one cold and rainy March weekend, so they called another company to replace their dead heat pump with a new Carrier. Our neighbors were pleased enough with the service and the other company is on Angie's List, so we asked their sales rep to come give us a quote (knowing it would only be a matter of time before our failing unit finally died, too). The the sales rep came over the following week. He was courteous and professional, but he gave us the bad news that there wasn't enough clearance to put the Carrier heat pump under our new deck. He claimed no heat pump should be under a deck, and said they'd have to run a longer copper line out from where the old heat pump sat and have the new model installed in OUR YARD! Of course, that would add to the cost! OK, now think about it - we live in a town home with an extremely small back yard to begin with, so the idea of putting a big old heat pump out there just wasn't very appealing. The guy from the other company also claimed it would be three weeks before he could send out the installers and it would take 2 days to install the HVAC unit and air handler. With all this in mind and original quote in hand, we figured we should gather some comparison quotes and talk to some other HVAC professionals. The next quote we got was even higher than the first quote; then we called the home supply store. We figured they, too, would be more expensive but we'd at least have a third comparison quote. The supply store sent a Chilltrol sales rep to see us, and we liked him immediately! He was thorough, straight-forward, honest, courteous, answered all of our questions, and took our concerns to heart. He also explained that since Trane units vent to the side and not out of the top, there would be enough clearance under the deck to install the new heat pump there. We double-checked his claim with Trane, and with a friend of ours who installs HVAC units in Ohio (who obviously would have no economic interest in the matter and would tell us the true story). In the end, Chilltrol earned our business and we saved money. Chilltrol's quote on a 13 sear unit was well below our first quote, and we ended up purchasing a 16 sear Trane heat pump for nearly the same price as the 13 sear Carrier model (and didn't have to put it in the middle of our tiny backyard!). And it's more energy efficient, which will save money annually. Clearly, it PAYS to shop around! The Chilltrol installers came within 2 days of our meeting with the sales rep and installed the HVAC unit and air handler in less than 6 hours and they came back the following week for a quality control check!
Description of Work: We contracted with Chilltrol, Inc. (a contractor for a home supply store) in April to install a 16-sear Trane HVAC unit. Chilltrol, Inc. was one of four companies we had contacted about replacing our aging heat pump and Tom Baumgartner gave us the best deal. He also agreed to have the company do all of the paperwork for the $600 Trane factory rebate, which just came in the mail yesterday.

From a sales perspective, things went quite well. A thorough estimate was given and the work commenced and was completed on schedule. That is where the good experience ended. Chilltrol is able to handle things when they go the way they anticipate. However, in my case this is not what happened. The unit they installed was very noisy and they were totally unmotivated to solve the problem. It took my initiative and a call to Trane corporate to find a solution (which Chilltrol, being experts should have known about). I am still waiting (it has been four weeks since promised) for the specifications on the ERV settings and a host of other miscellaneous items (including a duct damper handle). Any issues after install is like "pulling teeth" to get service. I do not recommend dealing with Chilltrol. It is the service AFTER the sale that counts and they have not learned how to deliver it.
Description of Work: I had a complete HVAC replacement performed including the add of a ERV (fresh air system), air cleaner, and humidifier. This was for a Trane X19I.

This system was contracted by the previous owner of our townhouse, but was still under warranty when we bought it. Our home inspection revealed the following problems: electronic filter unit installed upside down (this is critical for prefiltration), hot water heater pressure relief valve discharge tube cut during furnace installation but not reconnected, and exterior wiring between the disconnect and the condensing unit was *interior* grade cable and not adequately sized for the load (code violation & potential fire hazard). The contractor eventually corrected all but the discharge tube for the hot water heater, but not without a struggle. To top it off, the service manager called me a pretty insulting name on the phone as we concluded a conversation on a conference call at the house closing - not at all professional. I work in commercial building design and construction, and my bottom-line advice is to look elsewhere for a more competent and professional HVAC contractor.

Our heat pump/AC unit (18 years old) was making a lot of noise and seemed to be laboring to heat the house, so we called Chiltroll, based on the ratings they had received here on Angie's List. The technicians who came out were polite, prompt, and knowledgeable and thoroughly explained our options to us. Based on their recommendations and our own research, we decided to replace the entire heat pump/furnace system with a new Trane XL16i heat pump, an Aprilaire air cleaner, and a humidifier. Chiltroll did a good job of showing up when they promised to be here, doing the work promptly and neatly, and following through quickly when the county inspection showed there was one little item that needed to be fixed to pass inspection (adding insulation around the pipe for the humidifier). Their workers were professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. The new system is working great!

The service was totally professional from the estimate to the completed installation. Everyone from the company was prompt, courteous, competent, and professional. Mike, the salesman, was different from the other bidders in that he listened to my needs instead of telling me what I need. The installation crew actually arrived EARLY on the appointed day. They worked efficiently and thoroughly, and stayed until the unit was up and running smoothly. As far as this family is concerned, Chilltrol is the gold standard by which we will measure all contractors in the future.
