It was a very difficult processes in the end. Getting the estimate was a piece of cake and the guy (I don't remember his name) was very pleasant and professional. We talked very specifically about what I wanted to have done and I felt like we were on the same page. After a couple of months, I asked if the estimate was still valid and they said it was, I requested the Angie's List discount and it was readily applied. I was told a number of times that the job would take two days. I also had requested that they use the Dust Containment System. When I came home after the first day of work the floors in the first room were not completed. I had asked that the service people (Noah) call me as soon as they were leaving so I would know how long I would need to let the finish dry. I got no call. I called the main number and Evan told me that it was going to take three days because the service folks didn't plan on moving the furniture. They had arrived at 9:30 and were gone before 2:pm. I know that they could have come earlier, in fact I had asked them to come by 9, and they could have stayed longer to keep the job on schedule. It was also clear that they had not used the Dust Containment System. They had left their tools and there was dust all over. Though I will say, it was cleaned up before they finished. I called and explained I was disappointed. I talked to Steve a number of times and each time I talked to him he would become very upset and raise his voice telling me that I was being demanding and that I didn't understand how it worked with contractors, that things often go over time. Obviously, that isn't true. I was mostly frustrated by the lack of communication and respect; and that they didn't use the tools I had requested (and paid for) them to use. After a month of back and forth, of me writing and rewriting what I thought was fair, Steve removed only a portion of the charges of the work they actually didn't do AND would not budge to remove any of the charges due to the inconvenience nor did he ever acknowledge that Elegant Floors had not handled the situation appropriately. Their extra day of work was INCREDIBLY inconvienent, had I known it was a three day job, and even if they had called in the middle of the day to tell me they realized it would take three days, I would have had them come another week, because I had to leave that third day for a long overseas work trip and needed to be able to get to all the rooms of my house for packing etc. I am incredibly disappointed in this company. I was shocked that they were not more customer oriented and that they were so willing to dig their heels in and demand that I was the one at fault. What started out as a pleasant experience ended on a very bitter note. And I can see a number of flaws on my floor. Areas where they missed sanding and where they applied too much finish. During one of my conversations with Steve he said, "any reasonable man would see that what I am offering is fair". To which I responded, "what about a reasonable woman?" and he said "well obviously you aren't seeing it". This was just one example where I felt I was being treated differently because I am a woman.
Description of Work: They sanded and refinished the floors in my dining(165 square feet) and living room (344 square feet). They moved the furniture at an extra cost of $200.

This person (evidently a housemate of the member) job was estimated to take 2 days but ultimately took 2 1/2 because it needed to be done in sections. That is, because the entire work area could not be cleared of furniture, the crew had to clear ~1/2 the space, refinish that 1/2, then move all the furniture back to clear the second 1/2, refinish the second 1/2, then reset the furniture. Hence the process required 2 cycles of dry time for stain, sealer, 2 coats of finish, which elongates the process. She became agitated almost from the outset when Noe, our Crew Chief, neglected to call her as agreed when leaving on day 1. This is a very unusual request from a customer but Noe fully intended to comply and forgot so that's our mistake. But she immediately started to complain about how she'd been inconvenienced and demanded to know how she'd be compensated monetarily. When it became evident that the job would require 1/2 of a third day, she became even more irritated and demanding, and when I didn't agree, threatened to file an Angie's List appeal -- ultimately she did. But Angie's List rejected her appeal, ruling that she was not entitled to compensation because the job took an extra 1/2 day. She told me repeatedly that 'the floor and work were beautiful' but insisted that I compensate her monetarily for her inconvenience. Only after I refused did she find fault with the work and indeed she has paid in full and never mentioned again any problems with the work. Most of our customers are busy, working women who are seeking good work and earnest effort - we have an almost spotless record of delivering same. The notion that she was treated unfairly because she's a woman is simply ludicrous.

Elegant Floors (Steve and Cliff) were great. We scheduled based on a closing date that kept changing, but Elegant Floors worked with us throughout. The project only took five working days for nearly the entire house. I was thoroughly impressed with the finished look and feel of the floors. The damaged family room floor included a damaged subfloor, that could have increased our costs out of our budget, but they were able to work with us and kept the costs low. The family room floor turned out amazing and matched beautifully with the older floors in the rest of the house. I would definitely recommend this company for hardwood refinishing and plan to use them for our other types of floors.

My calls to the office were answered right away, and they sent a representative out quickly to give me an estimate. The representative told me what options would work best, and then I was faxed an estimate later that same day. I was quickly put on the schedule for installation the next week. The crew that came out to my house was very professional and did a great job, the new floors looked absolutely amazing afterwards. The crew removed all the debris from the job and put everything back in its place. The guys were real craftsman, I had no floor squeaks and the finish looked beautiful on the floors. They did a real good job matching the color of the floors with the old finish on the steps. I paid little extra for "dustless" equipment and I would reccommend you do as well, there was no dust when they were done. Other folks have told me about dust all over the house for days when they are done. The office called me during the week just to make sure the installation was going right as well and answered all my questions quickly. I would highly recommend this company.

Absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish, I scheduled 6 quotes from highly rated service providers on Angie's list. Rich Small showed up 5 minutes early and was extremely helpful and informative their pricing was one of the two lowest, and in the end they beat the next providers price significantly. The 2 men who showed up to do the work, came exactly when they said they would, were courteous and professional. They sanded a portion of the floor and showed us the way various stains would look, and allowed my wife and I to pick the stain we preferred (Colonial Maple). They then spent the next 3 days working hard sanding every inch of the floor, using hand sanders to get to the details the machines wouldn't reach, and taking great care to make sure everything was done perfectly and explained to me every step of the way. I would HIGHLY recommend Elegant Floors to anyone looking to do work on their hardwoods, in fact I've already recommended them to several friends, one of whom hired them and had an equally satisfying experience.

Overall it went pretty well. The work was completed in two days as promised and the floors look very good. During the work we phoned the Elegant Floors office and again asked about having a couple of areas replaced where the wood floor was in very bad shape. This issue did come up when the estimator was at the house but was not in the work order. The owner came out that same day to look at it and discuss what could be done. We were impressed by that. While we were initially quite satisfied with the work, we discovered over the following two days several things that we thought were the result of carelessness on the part of the workers. There were two sets of stains on our stairway carpet and one on the upstairs bathroom door. An Elegant floor representative is supposed to come out this coming week to look at them to see how that can be repaired. Their response to this will have a big impact on our overall impressions of the company. Maybe we should have asked them to cover the stairway, but we think they should have known to do that as a part of their work to prevent accidents like this, and they should have been more careful when touching other parts of the house like the bathroom door. They did cover the built in bookshelves and several other areas with plastic sheeting. But, the workers did not seem to notice the stains since they didn't mention it before they left. I did however ask them to clean a stain on the hallway wallpaper, and they did. They did not replace the closet doors in the hallway linen closet, middle or back bedrooms. We paid an additional $200 as part of the furniture removal and replacement process (Elegant did reduce that to $100 after we complained that we put back all the furniture), and we discovered the day after the work was completed that the closet doors in the back bedroom would not align properly as they did before they were taken off. I will have to get this repaired. The phone line for the land line phone in our back room apparently was damaged since it no longer works. I tested the phone at another outlet to see if it work and it does, so apparently the incoming line must have been damaged. That will require the phone company to come out and fix it. Finally, the stain on shoe molding in the back room was not done very well and obviously in haste. We decided not to complain to Elegant Floors about that since those sections will be covered by furniture and we are tired of having the work done. I would consider Elegant Floors again if I wanted to have additional floor refinishing done in the rest of the house, but I would definitely be much more diligent in watching the workers. If the above issues had not occurred, and we only had to grade Elegant Floors on the basis of how the floors looked we would give them a higher rating. So far, they appear to be responsive to concerns we have mentioned to them. But, the issues mentioned above are an irritant and will require additional time to f

Our experience with Elegant Floor Services started well, but unfortunately didn?t end that way. We liked Joe McCreary, the salesperson who gave us the initial quote, and were satisfied with the project price that we negotiated with Steve White, the owner. Sadly, things went downhill from there. At the end of day one of the work, we stopped by to see how things were going and were shocked to find that our family room carpeting had been torn out. Doing work on the family room was not included in the contract. To their credit, Elegant admitted fairly quickly that the error was theirs. Unfortunately, the only person who they said could help us in this situation was Steve, the owner, who was on vacation that week. After much back and forth with Steve over a period of a couple of weeks, they did finally agree to replace the carpeting at no cost to us, and we were satisfied with the final resolution. However, it was a painful and slow negotiating process (their initial offer was to refinish the family room floor at a discount which, of course, was unacceptable, as we had no intention of paying to fix their mistake). We also felt they weren?t all that pleasant in dealing with us despite the fact that none of this was our fault. As for the work we actually contracted them to do, the final product was only so-so. There were drum sander circles in numerous places throughout the house (including on the brand new hardwoods they installed for us). We have had hardwoods refinished before and have never seen anything like that. They claim it is more noticeable because we have a darker stain on the floor (mesquite red), which I suppose is possible, but there are a lot of areas that we may consider bringing in someone else to fix. Needless to say, we certainly wouldn?t bring Elegant Floor Services back to do the work.

Our crew made a grievous and unfortunate mistake on this job in that they removed/destroyed carpet that was not supposed to be removed and was not called out on their work order. We accepted responsibility immediately and went about making arrangements to have their carpet replaced with new. We shuttled samples and coordinated appointments with a nearby carpet dealer to get the new carpet installed. We paid 100% of the cost. When the mistake happened, our initial suggestion was to refinish the underlying hardwood floors (as in the rest of the house) rather than re-carpet the room. Our thinking was that refinishing the room was approximately equal in value to replacing the carpet and we would pay any difference in value. But the member's countered that we would need to give them a $1200 credit toward an area rug in addition to refinishing the floor. Ultimately, we replaced the carpet at a cost of ~$1300. Sadly, they were intent on enriching themselves because of the mistake and weren't happy when I declined their offer. Beyond that, any contention that we were 'not easy to deal with' I think is unfair. There concerns about edger marks, which are nearly impossible to prevent entirely and are more visible with dark stain, were evidently not significant enough to warrant a service call, which as always we would readily dispatch. This job clearly got off on the wrong foot and hence it seems was destined to yield an unhappy customer.
Even though this process took place over three days, the areas were sealed off with plastic sheeting preventing dust to impact the rest of the house. The workers were courteous and professional and highly skilled in the art of wood flooring and finishing, as well as slate cleaning and finishing. The company name is highly appropriate - ELEGANT! The finished product is beautiful beyond expectation. We highly recommend this company.

Superbly. My husband used to re-finish floors. He is an artist and extremely picky about surfaces as he used to do high-end jobs and had very finicky customers. He discussed his concerns carefully with the estimator, and they met all of our expectations. While refinishing floors is never cheap, hardwood floors are a real asset to a house and deserve some serious TLC every decade. Elegant Floor Services provided this supremely.

see above. Only thing we would have liked at the end were some written instructions on cleaning and maintenance of the floor such as cleaners to use or not to use.
Description of Work: They put a new engineered hardwood floor on top of the old flooring. We were given good explanation of pro and cons of sanding and refinishing existing hardwood floor which previous owners had painted white or put down new floor. After that discussion was engineered vs hardwood. Came out within 2 days to give estimate which he emailed to us later that day. Once we agreed to use his company he was able to start within 1 week and job completed in 3 days. Workers were professional, cleaned up after themselves and responsive to any questions or concerns.

I got three estimates for the work. Elegant Floors was the highest bid, but in the email with the bid, I was told they would match any other offers. I called and asked if they would match the middle offer, and they agreed back by email. During the time we didn't have email service because of the move, I got a call regarding scheduling the work, and it didn't sound like the same amount I'd been offered before. I said it didn't sound like the amount we'd agreed on (the match) but I needed to go ahead and get the work completed. I scheduled the refinishing for the day after we moved out of the house. The crew arrived on time, my husband left them in, and left them to do their work. We both came back the next day to see the results. The floors themselves were well done. The freshly painted walls were shockingly and significantly patterned with black marks up to a height of about 4 feet. There were splatters on the baseboards as well as on the tile in the entry. I called the company during business hours and left a phone message about the problems--since no one answered the phone. I never received a call back. My husband spent the day repainting the walls and baseboards since our house was supposed to show later that day. The day after I called about the problems, a bill was mailed to me. It was for $40 more than the emailed offer, which I, again, had access to. I called the company back two weeks after not hearing anything in response to my message. They claimed they never received it. (I know I left it at the right number). I told them again about the problem with the walls, and I was admonished for not letting them come and see it--even though I had already said the house was on the market and I had not received any response to my earlier communications. After some discussion that was not exactly pleasant, Elegant Floors conceded a price reduction for the walls. I never got the original email offer price. All in all, the floors look good, we had to do a LOT of fix up after them, and the price was good. The hassle factor was pretty tough, especially since this all occurred during our move. I chose this company because of their reputation here on Angie's List and I needed service I could count on. My experience did not match those I read about before engaging this company.

Overall the floors look great and the price was reasonable. Cliff was knowledge and helpful in getting the work started and pushing it through completion. However, we had some negative experiences along the way...take these for what they're worth. The workmen caused significant damage to our couch and bar when moving them (appeared to bang them on a doorframe). It took multiple phone calls and emails to have the owner come out to look at the damage. We filed a claim with their insurance company for the couch (also a lengthy process). As for the bar, an elegant foreman was able to fix damage to our satisfaction. When the work was complete doors were left off hinges, shelves were not replaced, and there was splashes of stain on various parts of the wall. While some stain is expected to be left on the baseboards, they left stain 3 or 4 ft high on some walls. We needed to repaint parts of the wall.

A frozin pipe in our ceiling broke and damaged the walls, ceilling and the floors. Elegant floors sent their representative promptly came over and gave and estimate on refinishing the floor. He did not feel that we had to replace the floor. After getting a couple of other estimates from other companies that thought we should replace the floor, I called Elegant floors back and had their representative come back. He came back to check the moisture content of the floors, using an instrument in several diffierent places. He thought the that it was not necessary to replace the floors. He explained to me the steps invoved in finishing ther floors and said that it could be done in one day. As promised the two workers arrived on the scheduled mornig, moved the remaining furniture out, sealed the doors with plastic and tape. They workde meticulously. I checked the floor during the sanding process, and they indeed removed the unveven warped areas and made the surface smoothe. When I returned that evenig I was pleasntly surplrised to see the beatifuly restored foor. It looked better than before the dammage. The only negative, was that the workers did not speak good english, and it was difficult to communicate at times. Over all the service was exellent.
Description of Work: The floor in our living room was damaged by a broken pipe. It was sanded several times and sealed with three coats of poyurethane. The work was done after they sealed all the doors entering the room with plastic and tape. I like the way the floor looks now better that before.

They did beautiful with the results of the floors that they did do. However, I feel that they misrepresented what they could do. Steve in the front office was difficult to work with in regards to billing.
Description of Work: I hired them to refinish some hardwood floors on several levels of my home. They had to patch several areas.

The experience was very good. They came when they said they were, and their dust prevention system worked better than we had expected.
Description of Work: They sanded and refinished our living and dining room floors. They also took up the carpet, sanded and refinished a bedroom floor.
Although this is a job that is well-known to be messy, the men carefully moved my furniture, carefully applied numerous drop cloths to protect my property, put up plastic barriers to attempt to contain the dust, and skillfully performed their work, going above & beyond in their finished product. The men were always prompt & courteous & I even felt comfortable running errands during the time they were in my house working. A few days after they left, I noticed 2 small spots of varnish & someone came out & 'repaired' those two spots very quickly. I highly recommend Elegant Floors. In fact, I've already re-hired them to repair a scratch to the marble floor of my master bathroom caused by painters in my home.
Description of Work: Cliff Small first came to look at all of the wood & marble floors in my home & to measure for the estimate. He was prompt & courteous and he was clearly very knowledgeable. Based on Cliff's recommendation as a result of his thorough evaluation of the floors, I had Elegant Floors refinish/stone grind my marble foyer; refinish the wood floors in my living room, dining room, kitchen, stair landing, and powder room; and add & stain a threshold in my rec room.
