At Window Nation, we know replacement windows. We’re third-generation window replacement experts who have been lucky to provide homeowners replacement windows, siding, and doors for over fifteen years. We opened our first showroom in Maryland in 2006, quickly growing to serve homeowners in cities across the country – and we’re not stopping there. We’re grateful for every homeowner who has trusted us to upgrade their most important asset: their home. We’ve learned a lot about home improvement over the years, but the most important thing we learned isn’t about window replacement. We learned the home improvement industry isn’t about offering the best windows, siding and doors; it’s about the relationships we build with our customers.
Our experiences with the sales staff and the installation crew were completely different, so I will separate them for the purposes of this review (although for the "ratings" I had to combine them into a single rating for each category). The salesman who came to our home was personable but it turns out he was not effective and gave us information that was incorrect about the company's policies. The salesman miscounted our windows for the estimate (which was later discovered by the person who came to do the measurements and was unable to locate that many windows). However, the higher charge continued to remain a part of our bill and it was difficult for us to get them to remove it. The salesman told us that there would be an extra charge if a lead test came up positive (because of extra work they would have to do), but he told us that based on the look of our current windows he did not think that would be an issue because the windows they were replacing looked newer. The company never did a lead test, and when the additional charge appeared on our bill we contacted them asking why. They stated that because of the age of our older home, they assume lead and do not do a test, which is the opposite of what the salesman told us. I asked for a written policy for lead testing, and never received one. Throughout all of this, it was difficult to get the sales staff to return our phone calls and respond to our questions. A couple of times, my husband would call and leave a message, and I would get the return phone call instead of him; my only assumption for this is that they thought I would be "easier" on them (I am a teacher and generally cannot answer my phone during the school day, while my husband is available to answer his all day). The storm door was mis-ordered in terms of both style and color, and had to be sent back for a replacement that was installed at a later date. Absolutely NONE of these issues were resolved until I wrote a two-page formal letter, documenting (with a timeline) all of the problems we had experienced and phone calls/emails we had sent in an attempt to resolve the problems with the local Window Nation sales staff, and cc'd the company president in Ohio. He responded immediately, and resolved every issue to our complete satisfaction. The workers that came to install our windows and doors were fantastic! It was a big job, and our house is old and has no standard measurements. The crew was professional, clean, explained everything, and stayed late to finish the job in order to not have to make it a two-day job. We absolutely love the windows, and immediately noticed a difference in noise from outside. The windows are an excellent quality. Likewise, we love the doors, with the exception of the storm door. We had a mail slot installed in the front door, and it actually came sealed shut. The work crew noticed this prior to leaving and were able to cut the mail slot open (leaving no visible marks) so it works appropriately. My one complaint about this is that the screws on the mail slot have rusted and look bad, but that is minor, and may not be noticeable to anyone else! The storm door is a problem, though. Our front door is very narrow, which may be the cause of the problem. Our door seems to be slightly too narrow for the opening. I'm basing this only on what our neighbors' storm doors look like ? we have a gap between the storm door and the door frame large enough for me to put my thumb into, and none of our neighbors have that large of a gap. Because of this, the door does not close well. For a while, it was misaligned and we were unable to latch it; when we contacted Window Nation's customer service about that, they sent someone out immediately who was able to fix it so it latched. The gap still remains, however, and the screws on the door handle keep coming loose ? we are regularly tightening them with a screwdriver. I am assuming that the gap between the door and door frame puts extra stress on the handle when we close it and causes the screws to loosen, but I am not sure. However, the rest of the items we had installed are fantastic. If it's possible to forego the sales experience and just get the product installed, I would recommend that. However, because of our initial experience with the local sales staff, I cannot recommend Window Nation, as I imagine there are other companies that do a better job of handling sales, counting windows, testing for lead, and measuring for storm doors.

I contacted them through Angie's List. The called right away the next day. I ended up talking to them this afternoon when they called back because I was busy this morning. They ask everything possible - to include if you have a spouse. In short, they refused to make an appointment without my spouse present. I explained it was three small basement windows and my spouse was on board with replacing these three windows. I could not schedule myself and my spouse at the times that worked for them. I called them back to inform them I would need to go with another company if they refused to meet without both of us - the result was a click in my ear. Nasty and not friendly. Before window nation complains about my review - go back and listen to the recorded conversation - yes, they record you. Companies don't record you to benefit the customer!! Run, don't walk - run to another window company. You don't want to mess with these schmucks.
Description of Work: I needed a simple quote for three windows.

Hi [member name removed] — Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Anytime a customer, or potential customer, takes the time to share feedback, we take it to heart. I personally took your suggestion and listened to the two phone conversations you had with us. And while I didn’t find our team to be rude, they absolutely could have handled the call better. Meaning, that while we do try and encourage both partners to be home, it is not a necessity and that should have been explained to you, along with the rationale as to why we find it better when both homeowners are home. But at the end of the day, we want to help our customers and work around their schedule. And if that means just meeting with you, they should have simply said great and scheduled the time. We do strive to offer the best experience possible for our customers and I am sorry that you didn’t experience that with us and that we didn’t have the opportunity to earn your business. If there is anything else I can do to help, please let me know. Thank you — Harley Magden, co-founder and owner

Within 5 minutes I received a call from one of the company representative who asked for my husbands name then told me they do not schedule the appointments they are scheduled by the salesperson themselves and I would receive a call back within 24 hours. 5 minutes after I hung up another person from the company called to get the same information and I told her I had just spoken to someone and was waiting a call for scheduling. It is now 5/31/14 and I never heard from anyone to schedule an appointment.

The sales associate arrived on time and went through a detailed presentation. He seemed very nice and knowledgeable. I almost had a heart attack when the quote was 30k for 22 windows. This was close to double the other estimates we had received including aluminum clad wood windows. It seemed that the expectation was that we were going to decide to choose the company on the spot. This was not the case. I never make large purchase decisions with out taking time to think about them. I could feel his attitude change we were concerned about the price and needed time to think. He told us that once he leaves, there would be no more negotiations and special deals were no longer applicable. It was really uncomfortable and I just wanted it over. I felt like he was combatitive about our decision. The company may do a great job and offer good products but I will never do business with them.

I had previously written a positive review of my experience with Window Nation with the purchase and installation of some windows but now I would not use the company again. I had Window Nation come to my house to do an estimate to replace two entry doors. The salesperson upgraded certain items without telling me about the less fancy and less pricey options (for example, selecting ornate door hardware when simpler hardware was available (which I found out when I met with another company who sells the same brand of doors and was infinitely more up front with me about options). I was given a price that was very high, and then told if I didn't sign the contract THAT DAY I would not get the deal again (which they also did when they sold me my windows and I complained in my review of that tactic then). I told him very firmly that I would not be signing anything that day. He refused to leave me a written estimate and said they would be emailing me. I don't really blame the salesman. He was obviously following the company protocol because the stuff he did was similar to my window salesperson's. I got estimates from 3 other companies, including another A-rated Angie's List provider that I will be reviewing when the services were done. Window Nation's price was over $1000 more than the other company's (and they use the same door manufacturer). The other companies who did the estimates did not try to force me into signing a contract that day. And they left me with a paper copy of the estimate. So I went with the less expensive company that is A-rated. I did not receive an email copy of an estimate until yesterday (over a week after the estimate was done and after I contracted with another company) and the estimate was then only for one door, with a much better price than I was offered at the onset (but still more expensive than the other company). Of course they told me if I didn't sign a contract by the next day then I would lose the price. So overall, their sales tactics are utterly pushy and disgraceful, and their price sucked. I guess they push people to sign contracts so they don't realize they can get a better price with another company. In my opinion, if you cannot offer the best price off the bat without arbitrary deadlines, and be secure in the knowledge that you are the best provider with the best price to allow the customer time to double check elsewhere, then you are not a company I want to do business with again. Which is unfortunate for them, because after the doors are replaced I will be looking to have the rest of my windows replaced. So two jobs they missed out on by being, in my opinion, overbearing and pricey. Update: After I emailed Window Nation to tell them how I find their sales techniques obnoxious and specifically stated that I did not blame the salesperson as he was merely following Window Nation's protocol, I got a card in the mail from the salesman (except in a woman's handwriting) apologizing for making my sales experience bad. I find this reprehensible that they allow their salesmen to take responsibility for policies and practices that are clearly not their fault. If Window Nation wants to apologize, perhaps the person who implements their terrible sales policies should apologize instead of scapegoating the salesmen. In fact, I emailed the Vice President of sales to express my dissatisfaction and never got a reply. If I could give them an F-minus for this I would.

It was an outrageous price for a door but they were very punctual, really nice and they followed up and everything. In late August, 2013 I asked WindowNation to come to my home and provide a quote for replacement windows. Rep came and took measurements and gave a presentation on how much money I would save from heating costs. Told me I would have an estimate in writing that night. He called me later and gave me some numbers over the phone. I have asked for a written quote for 2 months now and never received one. Extremely strange, I had heard good things about WindowNation so I was very interested, but still nothing in writing. Perhaps they were unhappy because I told them I was going to obtain quotes from different companies and would not sign any contract that night. I found this entire dealing extremely strange. I don't usually have to beg companies to provide a quote.

Window Nation was the third of four contractors we had out for estimates on siding and windows. While the salesman was otherwise professional and friendly, he insisted we could not leave our asbestos shingles up and have new siding installed over top of it - an option every other contractor offered us. Furthermore, I was quoted approximately $36,000 to simply have the asbestos shingles removed and properly discarded, "per EPA standards". The salesman very convincingly tried to tell me I was being misled by other contractors that it is cheap or unnecessary to dispose of asbestos shingles. Long story short, I asked the salesman to call his manager to confirm his facts. The manager clarified that we could leave up the shingles. After the appointment, I called Baltimore County Waste Management and was told by their EPA specialist that as a "non-fryable" asbestos product, the shingles are not subject to the same conditions for safe removal as other asbestos products. In other words, even a homeowner can safely remove asbestos shingles. They simply need to be wrapped in a plastic bag and duct taped closed before being disposed of. Furthermore, contractors are only charged $120 per ton to dispose of the shingles in the landfill - not the $1,600 per square that Window Nations quoted me. Needless to say, my faith in the integrity of Window Nations was completely lost by the misrepresentation in facts about the cost and process involved in disposing of asbestos shingles. Had I not known well enough to contest such a ridiculous charge, I would have paid more to have the shingles removed than it would have cost me to have new windows and siding installed. We opted to not consider this company for our work.

The salesperson was excellent. He provided more information about Window Nation and their products to me and my husband that we would have thought to have asked about. He was not pushy and encouraged us to get other quotes. One reason for this may be that he said he does not work on commission. Overall, he made us feel very comfortable about going with Window Nation. Two men arrived promptly and were finished on time. They were very professional and answered all of my questions (I'm very curious and asked a lot about what they were doing.) They also removed a decorative plaque above two of our windows, that was the source of leaking, and replaced it was an aluminum guard. One complaint: The aluminum frame around the window outside is already dented. I need to call them about it. Regardless, I don't think that should have happened so easily. That's why I gave their quality a B rating.

Initially great. Multiple calls to confirm the appointment which was good. First part of the estimate was fine and there was a demo of how much energy you'll save. A little over the top in terms of bragging about their 170 all A ratings. When the numbers were written down by the salesman it was like someone flipped the switch and I was in a pushy timeshare sales pitch. First if I signed right then I'd get a free cruise for two. Then if I agreed to have a sign in my yard before he left I'd get another discount. There was some other discount to but at that point I was convinced this was fishy and it was like he couldn't wait to leave. He never left me his draft estimate. I was promised an estimate but waited three weeks and signed a contract with someone else less pushy and cheaper. Three weeks after the appointment I got an email saying they had some questions but no estimate. Guess they lost my phone number. I sent a message thru Angies list asking if they were aware of their pushy salesmen before posting this and never got a reply.

Update: The company subsequently contacted me and offered to make an exception. I decided to decline the offer as I like to play by the rules and would rather go with a company that is truly interested in my business. If Window Nation has a minimum purchase requirement, that's fine. I think it would best serve the company and its customers to make that information readily available on Angie's List and the company website, though. Just my opinion.
Description of Work: I sent the provider a message via Angie's List indicating that I would like to obtain an estimate for a new front door, side lights and transom. I received a response asking me to call them to schedule an appointment. When I did so moments later, I was informed that they would not send someone to my home if I was "only" interested in replacing my front door system. I'm not sure why they asked me to call if they intended to turn down my business. I clearly stated what I was interested in replacing in my initial communication. Disappointing all around.

Company reps were on time and knowledgeable about the product, the cost was reasonable, the installers were prompt, courteous and very professional. We had an excellent experience with Window Nation for the installation of windows in our home. It all started with the very informative and extensive presentation by the sales person Chris Clarke. He explained every minute detail of the manufacturing of the windows and the materials being used. His in-house demonstration of the reduction of radiation from the sun using their window technology was one of the factors which made us decide on going with their company. He did not force the sale on us. Instead he put forward the benefits of this new technology and left it to us to make the decision. This was followed up by their staff Rodalyn, who helped with the HOA approval process. She was very friendly and helpful. Last but not the least, were the installing team. Peter and his team of installers did a fabulous job of removing our old windows and installing the new windows. They were very courteous and thorough in their job. They paid close attention to minute details and made sure every single window was installed as per the guidelines. They hauled away all the old windows and cleaned up the house in such a manner that we couldn't believe that they had just installed new windows. They walked us through the operation of the windows. On the whole a very satisfactory experience. We highly recommend people to use the services of Window Nation to replace their windows.

Overall it was a good experience, with one issue. I set up an appointment with Window Nation after talking to them at the Home Show in Timonium. I was told at the time that not only did they have a special for buy 2 windows get 1 free, but if I made an appointment at the show I would get 20 percent off. The salesperson was on time and spent a lot of time on her presentation (I now know wayyy more about windows than I probably ever wanted to know). She had an Ipad presentation and brought sample windows with her. I wanted a couple of days to do some research and I would get back to her, but after speaking with her boss I was told that I could not get the 20 percent off that I had been promised at the homeshow unless I bought right then and there (which I was not told at the homeshow). I already knew Window Nation had good reviews on Angie's List but I really wanted the extra time to be sure about such a big purchase, so I did not appreciate at all the high pressure sales situation this put me in. It made me very apprehensive. Ultimately I decided to purchase the windows because the price seemed good and the company has really good reviews. In light of that, I felt it was really unnecessary to do that because it marred an otherwise good experience and they could have relied on their price and reviews to make the sale without resorting to those techniques. Anyway, someone came out to measure and was also professional and on time. My windows came in quickly and the installers came out and did a good job. They were fast and thorough and walked me through the job after it was complete. I had a minor billing issue and they fixed it right away. So overall I would say they are a good company to work with but if you want to do research or get other estimates, you may want to do so before having an appointment with them, particularly if you have been promised a discount because they may put you on the spot or revoke your discount otherwise.
