The only thing that went well was that the tech was punctual. Although he was pleasant, he had some difficulty with English, and we had some communication problems - for example, I asked if he would be cleaning out the dryer, including the heating coils - he said yes, but when I showed him what I wanted done he clearly had no idea what I was talking about. When we went done to the basement to inspect the HVAC unit. I had a coupon from Valpak for a "whole house air duct and vent" cleaning for around $60, and dyer vent cleaning for $39. Apparently this was a come on - the tech went through a list of what the coupon didn't cover - more than one duct at $49 each, additional return ducts at $15 each and son on. The total came to about $250.00. I needed the cleaning done, so (with misgivings) I told him to go ahead. He attached a vacuum to the furnace, and went about blowing the dust out of the vents in the rest of the house, starting at the top. He used the same blower on the dryer vent - I asked him why he wasn't using a high power vacuum to do that, and he gave me a blank look. I explained that there was a screen at the outlet of the dryer vent (to prevent birds and squirrels from entering) and got the same blank look. I told him that if he was blowing the dust up into the vent it would just clog up the screen (it did - now I need to get someone to clean it out). I had to open the dryer and show him what needed to be cleaned at that end - again, he just used his equipment to blow the dryer out. I noticed too that none of the downstream vents were covered when he was blowing them out from above. When he was finished, I turned on the dryer (with the technician present). There was so much dust that it started to smoke when it hit the heating coil, and set off the fire alarm. In addition, the tech insisted on charging sales tax. I checked with Maryland Sales and Use Tax - Maryland law specifically excludes repair labor and labor for cleaning HVAC from sales tax. When he left, I found piles of dust around and above the dryer and around the house. When I turned on the heat, dust started swirling out of the vents. All in all, a lousy experience. I tried to contact the company with these concerns, both by phone and by fax, and have not gotten any reply.
