Description of Work: I like the consultants at the nearby tile store. Very thorough and detailed cost estimates. Great workmanship, I love the final results. A little more expensive than some, but I would definitely work with them again.

Description of Work: I called several times and got no answer. Once I finally got someone and told them what I needed, they said they would get back to me. After two days and I did not hear back from them, I called again and got a different person. She took my information again and said they would get back to me. After two days, the first person called back and left a message that I was our of their service area so they could not help me. I only live 30 miles from their Gambrills office and in the same county they claim to serve. I would not call this company if you live more than a few miles from their main office. They seem to have a much smaller service area than they advertise on Angie's List.

Response from James L Graves Construction
Dear [member name removed], I checked our records and spoke with Lindsay and Nichole about what happened when you called in. I see that you called in on the 27th of August and left a message about your project. Normally you would have received a reply the same day but Lindsay who is now out on Maternity leave went home early that day because she was not feeling well. I see you called us again on the 28th and left a message. Lindsay, when she returned on the 29th told me you were looking to have someone come by for a quote on 30th which we could not accommodate. You are within our service area but we were already booked with appointments on the day you needed us to come out. We would like to serve everyone who calls us but unfortunately it is just not possible. Thank you for considering us. Sincerely, Jim Graves

I called Jim while he was on vacation. He answered all of my questions right away. I was so impressed with the phone call, that I set up a time to meet and go over the project. The first day he arrived, Jim called his plumber off of another job to come take a look at the bathroom. The plumber arrived within 15 minutes. He and Jim began to brainstorm different options for my bathroom. Within a couple of days, Jim sent me an e-mail with the different options, and pricing. He and his contractors completed the bathroom around my schedule. After the drywall was installed, I painted it myself. Jim did not like the way the drywall was sanded after I painted it, and sent someone to resand and paint for free. I HIGHLY recomend Jim Graves for any home project. His resume speaks for itself!
Description of Work: Jim and his contractors gutted my old bathroom and replaced everything.

Customer service is Jim's game and he is a master. He listens carefully to what the customer wants, makes sensible suggestions, and pays very close attention to the details. He has a great eye for design. Jim was also very patient when we made changes mid-project or had trouble making a decision. He employs very skilled workers who are polite and professional and respectful. They came into our home, got the work done efficiently, and cleaned up according to Jim's standards. When you are working with a house as old as ours, surprises are bound to pop up. Thankfully our surprises were managed with minimal angst because Jim and his workers know what they are doing, can think out of the box and do their jobs well. The final cost was a little above estimate because of the changes we made. We feel we got more than our money's worth and we are already planning some more work for him. I have recommended Jim to several neighbors.
Description of Work: Our 45 year old house desperately needed two bathrooms completely remodeled. Our hall bath had new fixtures, new tile floor and tub surround - which involved raising the ceiling over the tub to the height of the rest of the room. It also involved some rewiring and a completely new paint job. We did use a vanity/sink combination that we purchased earlier and never got around to installing. The master bath was a work of art! We extended the small bathroom into a closet that opened into the hall. The shower was moved into the closet space which gave us room for a 60 inch double sink vanity in the bathroom. It required moving some plumbing and some rewiring. Again, the shower surround and floor were tiled and all was painted and we had all new fixtures installed. Because there was an air conditioning duct running through the original closet, we could not take the shower stall all the way to the closet wall. We had to stop about 9 inches short of the wall but we turned that space into a functional closet. We got a beautiful bathroom and enough room to store linens in the smaller closet. Jim also had his tile guys fix a broken tile in our front hall and we had some ceiling work done in the kitchen.

The work was done in about a week. Jim had his subcontractors scheduled very tightly so little time was wasted. He checked in regularly and was always available by phone. All of his workers were efficient, professional and skilled. We are very happy with the space.
Description of Work: We had an unfinished basement room that we wanted converted to finished space for a home office. The space was complicated due to exposed duct work, plumbing, support beams etc. Jim brought in his HVAC subcontractor, plumber, and electrician before starting the work to assess the best way to finish the room nicely but with minimal re-working of those systems. A lot of time was given to careful and creative problem solving. After some moving of ducts and plumbing, some new electric was installed, framing and drywall was put up and finish trim was installed. A large closet was built to hide some exposed pipes and provide extra storage.

We hired Graves Construction to upgrade an old basement bathroom. Overall, this was a very smooth process. Jim is friendly, flexible, responsive and easy to deal with. His contractors do a good job and clean up when they are done. The price for the job was competitive and the work was done exactly as stated in the contract. I have no problem recommending this company and will use them again in the future.

From the beginning, Jim was very easy to work with and was readily able to adapt our ideas to the project. His advice was always spot on and he stirred us in the right direction on choice of colors, types of materials and what truly needed to be included in the project. The results are fantastic. The shower in the master is awesome with two shower heads, sliding glass doors and gorgeous tile work. The guest bath is not as big but the classy cabinets and mirror are every bit the equal of the master and the tile enclosed bathtub with sliding glass is beautiful. The Patio is much better than expected and has really improved the back of the house. His crews were very professional and he demanded perfection from all. Keeping the site clean was also a big plus, with plastic installed on floors and rumble removed as soon as possible. The lag in meeting the proposed completion date was caused by suppliers not being able to meet our demands. It was a lot of work but we couldn't be more pleased with the showplace results. I highly recommend Jim and his company for all your remodeling plans.

The project was finished on time and on budget. If that isn't enough, Jim and his team are, to a person, professional, thoughtful, and dedicated to making the client happy. When problems occurred, as they will on a job of this size, Jim was there to manage things and find creative solutions.
Description of Work: Jim and his crews removed one wing of the house and rebuilt it from the foundation up. The new structure has a master suite with a walk-in shower and 2 walk-in closets. There are 2 additional bedrooms, another bathroom with a jet tub and separate shower, and a small laundry room. They took care of everything from the permit process to washing the new windows when the project finished. The project included building a foundation and a drainage system in the crawl space; putting in floor joists, the subfloor, and finished wood flooring; building and insulating interior and exterior walls. When the new windows and doors were install in the new space, one of the sliding doors was removed and then re-used in the existing part of the house. The project included wiring, plumbing, and installing a new heating and cooling system. It also included building, sheet rocking, and painting interior walls. They installed all of the plumbing fixes and cabinets. New siding and gutters were installed on the entire house (new and old) so everything fits together and the new section don't look like an "an on." As a finishing touch, they put in stone steps and a new patio.

Mr. Graves was contacted to complete a low budget bathroom remodel. He was told to keep the price between $6-7K. Mr. Grave's proposal came in at the target price and included complete demolition through painting. The job was scheduled quickly and was completed in 7 days as promised. The crew arrived daily on time, were polite, and kept a very clean workspace. Tarp was laid from the front door to the bathroom to protect floors and there was little to no dust. The workmanship was excellent. Most of the fixture and finish choices were left to Mr. Graves to make and he has excellent taste. This was a low budget job with a very high end result. Mr. graves was so pleasaant to work with that we are trying to find more work for him to do just so we can keep him around.
Description of Work: complete bathroom remodel - on a budget: demo tile floor/walls, remove tub, toilet, vanity, mirror, wallpaper; install 12x12 tiles on tub surround and floors, replace tub, toilet, vanity mirror, light and fixtures; replace some drywall; paint.

Our bathrooms were the original ones from when our house was built in 1971. The master shower was unusable due to missing tiles in the wall, and the hall bathroom leaked every time the shower was used, which was several times a day, causing damage to the wall, floor, subfloor, and the living room and downstairs hall ceilings. Jim and his men came in and completely replaced both bathrooms with modern fixtures and attractive tile and paint. They worked on the bathrooms one at a time, starting and completing the master bath first so that we had a working bathroom at all times. They retiled the shower and floor with ceramic tile, installed an ADA approved comfort height elongated toilet, and new vanity and sink with granite counter top, and a grab bar on the wall for help in entering and exiting the shower stall. They painted the walls and trim and the door, inside and out. The finished bathroom is beautiful and very convenient. After completing the master bath, the men completely gutted the hall bathroom, removing the fixtures, rug, floor and subflooring and replacing them with a new tub, an ADA approved comfort height elongated toilet, and a vanity and sink with granite countertop. They also installed new valves, fans, lighting fixtures, mirrors, medicine cabinet, and a GFI outlet in each bathroom. In the hall bath they installed a new door and lever type door handles. They installed an access panel in the hallway outside the second bathroom for easy access to the tub valves, and repaired the ceilings in the living room and downstairs hallway which had been water damaged. They also repaired two other ceilings which were not connected to the bathroom work. The second bathroom is also a beauty to behold and very convenient. The whole project took about four weeks from start to finish - it would have been finished sooner but we had to be away for a few days during the four weeks so work had to be delayed. The workmen were all very polite and friendly and arrived on schedule every day and were very willing to answer any of our questions. Jim kept in close contact with the men and was very reachable by phone and email. Nicole was my contact person in the office and was very helpful, as was Jim, in choosing styles, etc. for the bathrooms. We are very happy with our bathrooms and would recommend Jim Graves and his men to anyone wishing to remode their bathrooms.

Jim came out immediately to give me an estimate. He spent a great deal of time listening to what I wanted, made creative suggestions, and made what is normally a stressful event a very pleasant experience. I picked out most of the fixtures which accounted for a great deal of the budget! Jim will, however, do all of that from start to finish if you choose. He and his employees even cut a whole through my master bedroom closet, so I could get the 375 pound cast iron soaking tub I wanted. As in any project there were glitches (with the hand cut tile and marble floor) but Jim addressed every issue, and made it a priority to make sure we were happy . The result a beautiful bathroom! PS` We live in a 1954 split level, not exactly a mansion, however Jim & his staff were very respectful of our furnishings, floors, etc., and cleaned up every day.
Description of Work: Jim did a complete gut and remodel of the bathroom. He took it down to its' "bones" and then did a complete rebuild, including insulation ,placing a new vent system, relocating the heat/AC register, new electrical/lighting,plumbing,new tub, shower door, tiles, flooring, toilet, vanity and sink, and all associated fixtures.

From the start Mr. Graves gave us confidence that we were in good hands. He understood what we wanted to do, and seemed sure he could provide what we needed. Where we were unsure, he had good suggestions. He provided us with scale drawings and 3D views to help us visualize our plan. He gave us several places to go to look at tile, cabinets, granite, etc., and also put us in touch with a designer at one of the showrooms who was invaluable in helping us put everything together. The work went pretty much according to schedule, in spite of the workers running into various problems such as uneven walls and windows, and problems with the existing ductwork and wiring. Mr. Graves took it all in stride. He was very involved in the early stages of work keeping a close eye on his workers. In the middle phases of the project we saw less of him and his workers asked us about many details which we weren't sure about. At one point the plumber arrived to install the toilet and fixtures, but was unable to because the tile installer hadn't finished the grout, and this did cause a delay. The only other complaint we have is that the workers were less consistent about cleaning up after themselves near the end of the job. In the completion phases Mr. Graves was very focused on the finishing details and everything came out very well. He was very attentive to any problems we saw, noticed small details that we didn't, and was very willing to make adjustments as needed. Our bathroom, which started out cramped, and outdated, with a tiny, dark shower and toilet space, is now open, airy, and beautiful! We are very happy with Mr. Graves, and with our new bathroom, and would not hesitate to use him again.
Description of Work: Remodel of master bathroom including a complete gut down to the plumbing and subfloor, replacement of uneven portion of subfloor, removal of walls and construction of a half wall. Installation of new ceramic tiled shower with glass door, jetted corner tub, solid cherry double vanity with granite top, mirrors, vanity and ceiling lights, toilet, larger ventilation fan, and all new fixtures. Additional electric lines were installed as well as new HVAC ducts and vents to replace non-functional ducts discovered during the renovation. He also added a door between the master bedroom and bath. In addition, we had Mr. Graves take care of installing a new 80 gallon hot water heater, and replacing a chandelier in our 2 story foyer. ( These additions, along with the unexpected duct issues, added to our original estimate. )

It went very well, except for the flooring. The subcontractor experienced several delays in delivery and placement, the cost was higher than the estimate. Considering that this was only a partial renovation (sink, cabinetry, and lighting remained) the price was a little high, but probably because of the experimental nature of the work. Jim Graves was great to work with. He provided good advice and minimized disruption. He did the demolition, placement of toilet and most of the tile work on a weekend since that was the only bathroom in the condo.

Jim is a true professional. He knows his stuff and the people who are employed under him are great at what they do. I appreciated the fact that he provided an honest estimate of what will be required to get the job done right the first time. He explained each step as well as answered any questions that I had. The project went as planned from start to finish and the basement where all the water damaged had occurred is better then the original!

Our experience with Jim Graves was great. He worked with us to get the price where we wanted. For example, we did the painting to save some money. He also worked with a granite company we chose and made sure that all the work they did was up to his very high standards. His people were always there when they said they'd be there, they were respectful of us and our belongings and they did high quality work. They were clean and made sure that dust and dirt from the construction were minimized. When faced with a problem (like uneven walls or floors) they came up with solutions that met our needs well. They also worked fast. We couldn't be happier with both the results and our overall experience with Jim Graves and his crews.

Everything went beautiful. Jim planned for worse-case scenario since we had no way of knowing what the floor joist problem was going to entail. As luck would have it, the floor joists were an easier fix than anticipated, so materials and labor came in under the estimate. Jim tracks his projects carefully and keeps in contact, so you always know what to expect. Everyone who worked on our living room was hard-working, exceptionally professional and very helpful. The tear-out began on Monday morning and by Friday afternoon, my husband and I had a new-looking living room! Because everything went so well, we immediately asked if he would handle a bathroom remodel for us.
Description of Work: Living Room remodel on a 1954 Beach Bungalow whose carport had been converted to a living room about 25 years ago. Tear-out of old carpet; removal of sub-flooring, re-enforced floor joists; installed new engineered sub-flooring; some wall and ceiling repair; ceiling and walls re-painted, laminate flooring installed.

I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this project. Jim was mindful of my small budget and worked very hard to keep labor and materials within it. I was able to depend on James to coordinate his employees, making the process seamless. He was prompt in returning phone calls, true to his word, meticulous about details (and I mean meticulous!), and realistic about time frames. I was able to pick out my own materials, and brought what I could back to my house. There were two items that I could not fit in my car or carry, so James brought them for me. He was able to advise me on what to buy and what not to buy, saving me some cash! Finally, James was flexible on this project. I requested a door installation, and he seamlessly added it to the scope of work. There were no lapses or scheduling conflicts. I appreciated the fast and thorough work by James and his employees. I felt like James had my best interest at heart, I and plan to use him again. I would also recommend him regardless of the size of the job. This might have been a small job for him, but he treated it with as much attention as a large project. Perfectionism is his end goal.
Description of Work: This was a small bathroom remodeling job that included plumbing, demolition, construction, toilet repair, custom tiling, drywall and door installation. I also asked James to add an extra project, a door and frame replacement. This included carpentry, insulation work and door and lock installation.
